Still jotting down ideas…

So far, I’ve got some ideas I could work with, but nothing that really took my interest (or that I know how to make interesting). Update: Writing devlogs is great! As I wrote this post, I was able to decide on a game idea! _o\ \o\ \o/ /o/ /o_

After the theme announcement, I started to write a list of topics within the theme:

  • Floppy disk
  • Colossi
  • Egypt / Pyramids
  • Wheel
  • “Dumbphone” (i.e., a regular, “non-smart” one)
  • 14-Bis
  • Paper / Book
  • Nintendo’s GameBoy
  • Sega Genesis
  • Trojan Horse (i.e., the Wooden Horse)
  • Terracotta Army
  • The Great Wall

Some of the items weren’t really technology (like The Great Wall), but it was a start… From those, I wrote a few short “pitches” for games:

  • Paper / Book: You have an assignment due tomorrow, but the internet is down! Run to the nearest library and finish your research!
  • Colossi (I): You find an strange mountain/monument emitting a mysterious light. As you climb it, you discover that it’s a colossus from ancient times…
  • Egypt / Pyramids: Use your magical staff to lift and throw stones from the river to your pyramid-builder-partner, who must be able to catch the stones mid-flight and build a proper pyramid.
  • Terracotta Army / The Great Wall: Scrapped, as it wasn’t related to ancient technologies.

Then, while writing this post, I had another idea:

  • Colossi (II): There are mysterious shrines through a field. Upon climbing mysterious floating islands, you place magical lens onto burning glasses, lighting sacred fire on the shrines. Through this ritual, the colossus wakes up from its slumbers and… (?)

The shrines could be part of the colossus, and the end of the game may be a playable cutscene with the shrines floating into the air and becoming the colossus… I liked the idea of playing with lighting a lot, so I’ll probably start tomorrow by prototyping some pseudo-lighting mechanics. It would be great if my framework already supported custom shaders, but it’ll fun trying to move past this limitation.

Now, I’m off to sleep!

See you guys soon! o/

Difficulties…?

Computer drivers are malfunctioning, I’ll restart.

Drawing things out on paper is a good way to spend this time, though.

Getting started

Not getting much of an gameplay idea from the theme thus far, so i just started mucking about with graphics/ some basic movement.

gif here.

Probably need to come up with a player sprite that fits a little better with the tiles.

Well, here goes….

Of course, like most Ludum Dare, I was AFK all night, so here goes nothing.

and of course, my new laptop doesn’t have Unity yet. I guess I can brain storm while the download happens.

what have i done?

almost 3 hours in and all i have to show for it is this hud

my game idea is evolution choose your own adventure. this should be fun

About to start

coffee

After a good night’s sleep, it’s time to start (I stayed up until 4 a.m. to see the theme)

I’m still waking up, so I can’t think in code, but character art shouldn’t be a problem with this pint of coffee.

I’ll make a game about LOVE, the oldest mechanism in the world.

Good luck all!

The beam is fixed…time for bed!

The rendering for the beam graphic is pretty good for now! Tomorrow I will have to smooth out this Spider-man movement and the collisions. For almost 3 hours – I’m quite satisfied. I’m happy I can sleep easy tonight knowing my character moves and is starting to use his Gauntlet!

Keep grinding!

Im on it! Time to get old

Well since that’s the theme… but no… i’m not very energetic today so im going to do a simple and easy game: a normal old style tower defense 😛 but with a twist (no, you are not the bad guys) so wish me luck and here we go. And no, im not using those sprites, they are just placeholders for the momment.Clipboard01

Still searching for ideas

Serious lack of ideas on my side. 3 hours in and no idea what I’m going to work on.

Update I: Got a horrible Idea

The idea is pretty bad, but I hope to make up for it with fun gameplay and good graphics. Good luck to everyone else.

I’m in! Also, I overslept!

I’ve already lost almost 3 hours! I’ve gotta get on this!

My toolset:

Unity3D (C#)

Sublime Text 3

Visual Studio Community 2015

Paint.NET

– LMMS

bfxr

Tiled (if I need it)

TiledSharp (if I need tiled)

Streaming / other tools:

– Open Broadcaster Software

– Chronolapse + ffmpeg (I use this guide)

Twitch: bradurdung

Ancient technology? Sounds interesting…

Menu music!

I’ve started out by making the main menu for my game this time. I’m not sure if I’m going to keep the same name (or concept), but here is what the main menu looks like, as of now:

trainstack

But not only do I have an image: I have music! See, for my last two games, menu music was kind of a last-minute thing, but this time, I’ve actually spent a little bit of time making the music:

(sorry for the obnoxious picture, I don’t know how to make it smaller…)

oh man I really love the way it sounds once the beat really starts going *v*

Needed to get myself into mood. Does it look ancient enough?

“So… we found this thing deep down in the Atlantis a few days back. Brought it in to make some research on it. And since yesterday, we’re under attack. Lights in the sky, flying saucers, EMPs, electronics don’t work, our defenses are useless. That kind of stuff. Personally, I think they’re pissed we stole their ride.”

I’ve got a decent idea for gameplay. No name for the game yet though…

Woo! I’m in!

Worked a little later than planned, so I’m already behind a bit.  I don’t even know what tools I’ll be using! (Except, if it’s in JavaScript and uses mazes, I may re-use some of maze generator code I had written a little while ago.)  Been trying to come up with ideas for the theme for almost an hour now, I think I’ll thumb through some of the other posts.

No sleep for the daring.

Hey so it is 5 am. I’ve been awake since 2am because I got too hyped.

However I have spent time refining my idea, planning my approach and doodling some ideas. I think I have a solid idea of what I can get done.  If all goes really well I’ll even have a procedural island, but if not I’ll design an island instead. Here’s some pictures of my doodles.

I think I’m in…?

Just started messing with my software when I realized… the Ludum Dare is actually happening right now!

Hopefully I can finish this by the end of the Jam or whatever the relaxed one is.

Wishing good luck to all other participants!

I… guess I’m in!

Forming an idea – Combining TWO themes

I initially liked the “level changes while you play” theme quite a bit, and had a nice idea for it. At first I was a bit disappointed it wasn’t the final theme, but then I thought I could easily combine the two!

Basically, I’ll start working on a 2D platformer where the game world changes ever so slightly, and it’s placed inside an ancient building of some sort. Hopefully it unwinds like I have it in my mind. :)

I’m in! (With ideas?)

So for me, I completely forgot this weekend was Ludum Dare time…

But!

I’m in and have an idea! Zelda+Old-Magic-Robot-Technology!

Simply amazing~

Starting late but…

I think I have an idea for the compo, but I’ll be getting some sleep since I’ve been awake since 4am this morning and I am very very tired.

Goodnight, and good luck to all this weekend!
