Drawin’ Tiles!

Tiles!
I’ve made progress on the game side and I’ve taken a break to work on some tiles for the first area.
I’ve worked with 3 colours per sprite before, but never 1.

Synopsis :

World Building!

Gif~!
Although the process of:
* Place tiles in Tiled
* Export map as image
* Load image into GM:S as background
* Place invisible colliders and markers over the tiles
* Play map
* Make changes in Tiled
* Repeat
Is slow and laborious, I quite like making my world!
Only a few “features” left to go before Its just tiles and world building that needs doing!
Looots of world building… >->

Assuming 75% of the map is empty tiles, that’s still 10,000~ tiles I need to place and mark…
Quite the undertaking ><

Game Progress Day 1 (Ludum Dare 36)

Hi guys, didn’t post about me joining in the Ludum Dare. And here I am with a new progress (GIF below), featuring placeholder graphics and an initialized gameplay idea. You could get the idea of what I am making for the theme (which was a complicated one for me). Enjoy the weekend and have fun making your games. Good luck to everyone 😀

Have fun interpreting this…

Good morning!

I made a choice between “starting on time” and “getting enough sleep.”

Sleep won, as it often does. I do wish I’d been up to get the theme percolating in my mind earlier, though.

So, ancient technology, huh? Time to do some research. As a cop-out I could go for ancient game technology — or so I did consider, but our most ancient games, Chess, Go and Backgammon, are quite difficult to implement very fast.

Ancient weapons technology is under consideration. I’d prefer building something instead, though, but we shall see.

In any case, it’s brainstorming time!

Night 1 Journal

Sooo… tonight was kinda huge for me.

I started my first actual Ludum Dare with a game idea that actually fits the theme for once!

I also made some cool art for the game including a nice logo!

I made a decent title screen in a resolution that fits the theme perfectly (cough cough 1024×768)

And lastly, I made a post about my game that people seemed to actually like! (yay!)

Thanks for the great night Ludum Dare,

And good luck on your games, everyone!

Hot Morning Coffee

I set an alarm for 2 in the morning, decided to snooze those few hours longer to be better rested. I’m no fresher to Jams, but time to attempt my first Ludum Dare, take out my ‘Notepad the Game’ and start the research. Wish you all luck!

It feels like with this topic I should be programming something on my Zx Spectrum hah.

My Interpretation

This is just a preview of what I have got done in an hour.

Modular vehicular transportation, all dev art for now :)

Really nice, need to change road blocks rotation for more fun path for vehicle :))

Under Seige

Finally have a concept and development is underway!

Tryin’ to find ideas

Yep, still there. I have so many things to do unfortunately, but in my spare time I’m looking for ideas. Interesting theme, I was hoping so!

If something comes up, I’ll work with GM:Studio, Piskel Editor/Photoshop and GuitarPro&AbletonLive.

Good luck everyone!

This time with Music

We don’t have an artist on our team, but we will be working with a guest composer SuperDisk for this LD 36.

He’s already made some great menu music for us.

You can listen to a sample here

Soon it will be time for bed, but we are making progress on our Ancient Technology Idea.

Good Night everyone.

This is the theme…

Man, how was this the most popular choice. I can’t wrap my head around it. Anyone got any game suggestions or ideas. I have nothing.

I have 3 ideas I won’t use:

1. driving game (wheel is ancient)

2. medieval battle (with ancient technology weapons)

3. ancient OS simulator (e.g Windows carved in stone, Linux on abacus)

Starting again

So I made a character… It turns out to be ok-ish, but as it took me 3 hours to make her, I need to simplify a lot, or else I won’t be able to finish this in time. Also, voxels don’t play well with bones.

Oh well, it was fun. Back to the drawing board.

The spirit is willing, the brain is not

So I was hyped for this LD.  Cleared my schedule.  Ready to go.

Woke up, felt a little groggy and off, but not too bad, and still totally hyped.  Excitedly waited the hours down to theme announcement.  Then it happened.

90 minutes before theme announcement I started feeling rather sick.  Okay, fine, I can probably still LD sick.  I mean it’s basically just staying home and chilling in my pajamas, right?

Yeah, no.  At theme announcement I spent a little while tinkering with ideas and decided to go for a 2d platformer.

I then spent over an hour completely and utterly failing to create the absolute basics of a 2d platformer.  I looked at older code as a reference, and I just could not put these pieces together in my head to put them together in the game.  After more than an hour of this, I decided to go take a nap.

The nap has helped.  The brain fog is a little less severe, but I still can’t seem to organize my thoughts enough to organize basic elements for a game.  I can’t even get a simple prototype running because I just can’t think.  Not feeling too hot physically, either; the stomach upset is annoying, but the brain fog is absolutely driving me up a wall.

I keep thinking about how little time is left and that just seems to make it worse, adding anxiety to illness.  I have been reminding myself that I popped into the Compo on a whim last LD (my first!) 9 hours in and still banged out a functional game, from scratch, in about 24 hours – albeit that game had very small scope.  I know I can do this.  Just not right now.

I’ll probably sleep some more in a bit.  Maybe I’ll feel better in a little while and manage to put something together.  Maybe I’ll tinker with art for a little while and leave coding for later.

Maybe I’ll go for the Jam this time (again, once feeling a little clearer), for the extra time and the ability to re-use some older code as a starting point.

Or maybe I’ll drop completely and do what I did every LD prior to last – watch streamers make their own stuff 😉  Much fun, much learning.  And it’s been a lot of fun looking through posts here and seeing what others have accomplished in 6 hours, you guys rock!

Right now, though, I’m just trying to clear my head.  Stupid head, why you do this thing?

We are in!

This time I enter the competition with my sister.

We are already 6 hours in and we have yet to brainstorm an idea and we are in two different locations.

Feeling excited!

We are IN!

We are IN for Ludum Dare Jam.
Our team: Vaclav Spiral (music), Barbora Sevcikova (graphics, game design and level design) and me (game design and programming).

What will we use?
Unreal Engine or Unity

Folks, I wish you all a good time during Ludum Dare 36!

Core Game Loop Complete!

First night was a success. I created the core gameplay loop and I’m ready to start integrating it into the story. The story’s been outlined and I’m pretty happy with the direction I’m taking it. I’m striving to create a procedural narrative game and it’s definitely been challenging, but I got a good amount of the code base written out.

I’m feeling a bit vulnerable creating a text based game. They’re inherently not as pretty to look at as other types of games, but I’m going to do my best to bring this one to life and make it enjoyable for the player. Here’s a screenshot of the code I’ve written so far. Hopefully tomorrow I’ll have some decent in-game screenshots to show off.

Time to get some rest now.

Almost started

Finished some concept art, now to begin making the actual game and stop making ugly art!

concept

Progress! Finally!

After 6 hours of tinkering, I finally decided on what I’m going to create: a cute puzzle-platformer with a simple story of traveling through various “ancient technologies” — planning to put 80s 8-bit video games (it is “ancient” enough, isn’t it? :3), but will add more if possible.

I’ll create as many as possible levels and mechanism, then spend the next day polishing, drawing, and making musics. Definitely going to finish this one.

For now, will leave for lunch and some other stuff.

I’m in and my mind’s blank

Must... think....

Hi y’all! Europe is waking up, I guess. I’m in as well! I’ll be working my magic with Twine, Beepbox and my trusty phone camera to create an interactive story.

Well, I would, but I’m drawing blanks for what is a pretty interesting theme. Many different ways to go. Time to get the creative juices flowing and start thinking up some good story ideas!

Good luck everyone!

A cup of coffee can do wonders! Or a shower. Good luck finding some inspiration! :)
