Ideas ideas…

I have question at the end for interested

so, trying to figure idea for the game and after 3 hours, i have almost nothing…  thank god its only almost. I’ve come up few ideas for the subject, but nothing on the gameplay so they are dead ends for now. but there is this one subject i thought but since this is my first jam, I’m not sure if it’s too far from the original subject, ancient techonolgy, so i figured, id ask your opinion.

so, my idea was to make game about ancient medicine and doctors and such. It’s just not really technology, but what are your opinions?  too far from the theme or plausible idea? I’d love to hear your opinion in the comments.

Doesn’t sound too far off to me. :) Medical technology is totally a thing, and really always has been.

We’re In! First LD!

Friends and I are attempting to create a game for Ludum Dare.
Using Gamemaker for the engine and GraphicsGale for animation.
Still working out ideas for what to do, but having fun!

So far we have ancient relic or selfie taking person sent into future!

concept?

Can I use technology from the Industrial Revolution? Does that count as ancient enough?

Ancient Grabs: Update 1

Ancient Technology stumped me for a while actually. I had many ideas prior to this but none of them could fit with such a direct theme. I took a shower to clear my head and think of something.

I landed on a 2D choice-based colony game where you choose between taking care of your colony’s morale and risking colonist lives to find ancient alien tech on this new frontier planet.

I’ll add on the details as the jam goes on, but basically you have to balance your colony’s health and your colony’s grabbed tech to have a chance in surviving this new alien world. You are given a scenario and have to decide between two actions that will affect the colony. Reigns is a big inspiration.

The big challenge for me this time is to make this game while travelling. I’ll be working on my laptop on battery for most of the jam, in buses and trains as I travel the country. Hence I’ll be using very light programs like Stencyl, Aseprite, Audacity, Bfxr and Notepad.

The theme had me stumped for a while too. Particularly because I’d prepared using another game concept that would’ve fitted pretty much any other theme, except for ‘Ancient Technology’. Oh well.

Idea for a game – Pawn Stars parody

I’m not participating this time, but I’ve come up with a game idea that someone might use.
Lately the “Rich Harrison” pasta meme has been popular, and I thought you can make a game parody of the show Pawn Stars.

The game would have 2 stages: buying in the shop and then selling on auctions.
The flow of the game would be as follow:

1. You start in the shop and random people come in with random items. I would make the items fake, funny and ancient (theme).
2. The objective is to negotiate with the sellers and try to buy at the lowest price. As a hurdle, people will come with fake (as in in-game fake) items that will later not sell so you have to watch out for those. You can also use experts as a helpline but they cost money. For each item you have actions like “buy at asking”, “negotiate down”, “reject”, “ask expert”, “bribe expert to low-ball”, etc.
3. Say there are 7 in-game days between auctions and you get 2-5 people show up every day at random. You buy and then at the end of the week you auction off what you bought.

In between buying and selling you can have exchanges between the 4 guys working there, but the main character you control is Rick Harrison. Basically the idea is to make a parody of the show. I played a random episode for myself and wrote down the first few lines I heard:
– I’m Rick Harrison, and this is my pawn shop. I work here with my old man and my son, Big Hoss. Everything in here has a story and a price. One thing I’ve learned after 21 years – you never know what is gonna come through that door.
– At my shop, family comes first and money comes second, depending on who you ask.
– Do you mind if I have someone look at it? I know a little bit about it. Just letting you know, he’s a little odd.
– So I brought a little touch of Jazz today for you. A signed picture and a handkerchif of Louis Armstrong.
– This is such a rare piece … I definitely want to get a few grand out of this.
– Have you ever had this authenticated by anybody?

It might be funny and cool, it might be boring and sad.
Who knows ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Good luck everyone, have fun!

Temple of the Sky People

Screw it, I’m making a Metroidvania.

I’ve never made one before and I’ve always wanted to, so here we go…

caveman large

This is Thog, or some other caveman-like name

Thog has a sick child and the village wise man says the only cure is a gem found in the ancient Temple of the Sky People.  Thog will brave the monsters and traps of the temple to recover the gem to heal his child.

I’m using the theme twice.  See, Thog is a caveman, so everything he uses will be ancient technology.  But then he is going to go into the temple and discover even ancienter technology! (I don’t think ancienter is a word).  But because ancient lost civilizations always have better technology than the current ones Thog will find ancient technology that will actually be super advanced.  So Thog will start the game using clubs and torches and end the game flying around with a jetpack shooting lasers.  Isn’t that clever?  See normally ancient technology is worse… but in this case… it’s… better…

Running! And Jumping!

Running! And Jumping!

Keyboard inputs, map imports from Tiled, basic main character animations, collisions, and more all running at a silky smooth 60 fps.  But the gif is captured at 33 fps so you can’t see it.  Great start for me and 4 hours of work.

I’ve always wanted to play as myse- I mean, a caveman.

end of day 1

As I prepare for sleep tonight, I ask myself:
“What did I accomplish today?”

Then I recall the duck hunt memes in the irc, taking 3 hours to make a 200×100 gui, and making some dev art.

Tomorrow I have the task of programming the game and improving art.

So now I ask myself:

“Why couldn’t the theme have been Duck Hunt?”

That was fun?

Got a small engine built in Java, all that’s left is to implement lighting and I can begin adding content. Making a sandbox style game where you never advance past simple mud huts

Starting out

After lots of thinking we couldn’t really get a super satisfying idea but I guess we must move on.

A quick but detailed design of the game was indeed a must. You can see that we have perfect hand writing skills.

Afterward a Trello To-Do list was prepared.

I hope we can get everything done in time.

Ancient Invader Hunter

So I am making a bow and arrow hunter type of game where you need to hunt ancient invader aliens.

Plenty of stories around about ancient aliens so I took this chance to do something with it…

Also a fun physics bow and arrow system is nearly done!

Just Ludum Dare Things

Ah, that bitter taste of despair when you realize your first go at the map generator just isn’t going to hack it…
