LD18 August 20–23, 2010

Time for Dare

This will be fun.

Lets see how it goes. Some good themes in the list, as well as alot of bad ones.

Im unsure on development yet, depending on the game i will either choose C++ with DirectX if need shaders or use SFML for development speed, or Use UnityGameEngine with C# scripts

Milsom

AH

Well, hopefully I’ll have time to do something, be it jam for a while on something or even just work on something I’m already working on with the mood of the thing around me, but I’ve got a party on saturday and school on monday. Still, I might be able to get more dev time in than my last dare’s ~10 hours 😛 We’ll see, I’m keen for this actually. Hoping for an interesting but open theme. Explosions could be fun, actually.

I’ll likely be using flixel since I’ve gotten into that.

Love and respect

I’m here to spread the love.

I respect you, no matter what game engine or framework you use.

I’d like to publicly declare that I officially regret joining the highly commented upon “from scratch” vs. “engines” debate.

The conclusion after a week of vigorous debate is that this compo is for FUN and we should all be allowed to use whatever tools we like without getting any bad attitude from coder-snobs like me. And you know what, I’ve come to agree with this side whole-heartedly.

Please, let us put this issue aside and simply have some fun.

I am so excited for this weekend. I hope to post a lot of encouragement and positive feedback on people’s game submissions, and I am going to join the JAM.

Tools of the trade

So what’s going on this weekend.

What weapons have i chosen this time?

Well:

Programming

Visual C# .Net – Windows only i’m afraid.

SuperNova Game Engine (Mine, Find it here. It’s a .Net object though so you need to be writing in .Net)

Graphics

Paint .Net

Sound Effects and Music

Guitar Pro 6

sfxr for effects.

Community?!?!1!?1!?11!1one!1/1eleven!1

I’ll be streaming from start to finish here as i did last year.

I will also be trying to make a time lapse video too so we’ll see how that goes! 😉

All pretty samey from LD17,  minus the addition of SuperNova.

After LD17 i accidentally made a lot of reusable code which i chucked into a engine for me! 😀

After i’ve submitted a Compo entry i’m thinking of teaming up with a friend to get some sexy music going for a jam release too.

Who else is going to be doing something like this?

the engine has to have documentation on how to use it or source code…

I’m in

Been fiddling around with my weapon of choice today: ruby.

I’m going to use the Gosu framework, and will alter today refresh my memory of Ippa’s Chingu framework and decide if I should go with that one. It got a lot of cool stuff in it. I might just go with Gosu for that cosy OMIGOSH-I-HAVE-TO-CODE-IT-ALL-MYSELF-AND-IM-ALMOST-OUT-OF-TIME-feeling.

Daring to Dare!

I’ve decided that I will dare to enter Ludum Dare this coming weekend as my schedule is looking relativaly clear!

I’ve only tried once before and my entry sucked, but I learnt a lot then and I’ve learnt a lot since, so hopefully this time I’ll at least be able submit something that’s at playable. Good luck to everybody – looking forward to playing all your submissions next week!

My weapons of choice this weekend will be:

Programming

  • Java
  • Slick2D (built on top of LWJGL, so sorry to FreeBSD users :P)
  • NiftyGUI

Graphics

  • GIMP
  • InkScape

Sound

  • SFXR
  • Audacity

o/ One more for the slaughter, boss

I’m in.

Going to be using some of the basic end of my code from before/during/after the last LD <here>. I hack on this daily so I’ll get some public access repo up for it asap.

Everything will be in C++ with SDL/OpenGL on Windows. I’m currently putting Netbeans 6.9.1 through its paces as my prefered IDE. I generally code on Windows with the goal of it being compilable on Linux, so I intend to have builds for both available.

I’m setting myself two extra optional goals for this LD as well….

1) to comply with Experimental Gameplays August theme

2) to be portable and playable on WebOS during development

… if either of these get in the way (likely the ‘during development’ part of #2) then they will be turfed for the far more important goal of having something at +48h.

Best of luck all.

Wow ZERO BUTTONS?! I’m impressed. That will be a huge challenge. And totally cool. Are you going to make it controllable with a waggle of the mouse? Or the microphone? Or…? Best of luck, your entry will surely be uniquely original.

Possible New Game Engine!!!one!

Although i will probably be using Game Maker, i have started learning XNA, and MIGHT use that.
Wish me luck (i’m still finishing the XNA 2D tutorial XD)

nice to see someone else using game maker 😀

good luck to you to!

Hypotheticals

Were I to dare, I’d bring these with me:

Programming
Bennu

Graphics
Graphics Gale

Audio and Music
The ever glorious SFXR.
The Bennu mod_notes module?
A sound recorder, even?

For this LD I intend to actually submit something. And then finish it over the course of 48 weeks. Oh, and my LD15 entry is coming along nicely.

A Change of Tools – Swapping Pandas for Ogres

Panda3D, for all its merits, isn’t going to cut it on my netbook. Lacking a Real Computer, it’s kind of sunk for me…

I’ve decided, then, to try OGRE3D if I can get it installed and working. It’s got a bit more power, and apparently handles just fine on a netbook.

That means digging up C++ again and learning a complex library in a weekend. I’ll try to at least have something to submit for the jam. Hoping.

So, yeah. I’m not using Panda3D now. OGRE3D if I can get it working. Not sure how I’ll port my game to Windows, though…

Python-Ogre is a good wrapper library but I’ve had issues getting the resulting binaries to run on other peoples’ systems.
19. Aug 2010 · 14:58 UTC
Ogre3d should work fine on your system… Torchlight was done using Ogre3d and one of it’s key points was notebook-compatibility (and it works in my notebook just fine)

Ogre3d is awesome, I’ve been using it for 3 years now, excellent choice! There’s an iPhone port, and some of my past projects have been fine on netbooks, so you’re probably in the clear there.

Reporting for Duty!

Hi! Another individual ready and reporting for another sleep-deprived weekend 😛

This time I’m thinking of using:

Programming: C# (with XNA 3.1) in Visual Studio 2008

Graphics: GIMP and Inkscape

Sound: sfxr and Audacity

I won’t be streaming the whole thing in video (I don’t think anyone wants to see me bashing my head on the keyboard at 2am), but I’ll be Twitter-ing and blogging various screenshots and such throughout the weekend at (funnily enough) my Twitter account and the davecheesefish Games Blog. Looking at the various themes, I have no idea what I’m going to do yet but it should be fun!

Thy tools of Folis

Hi there,

I’m in for the first time (nervous to death)

Tools:

Mostly Game Maker with the basic GML
GraphicsGale
Audacity
Some cheap program nobody knows of for a cheap soundtrack nobody wants to hear

Oh well, “see” ya in the compo

– Folis –

LOL (Just HAD to do that)

cool good luck!

Don’t be nervous, remember it is just for the fun of it. =)

The retro kit

I will be using an eclectic mix of modern and older tech.

Pre-contest updates:

ms paint, gimp, scanner, writing instruments, paper, iconfu.com, pixlr.com

flex, java, mysql, html

google for syntax as needed (fully annotated in my source)

audacity, anvil, sfxr, musagi, algomusic, soundhelix

I will be making an online game of some kind.  I probably wont be able to commit as much time as some people, but hopefully my game will make up for it with oh-so-crappy charm.  I will try to adhere strictly to 100% from scratch (i.e. no frameworks, pre-made game maker engine stuff), so my game may look “bad” haha.  we’ll see.. if i can be creative enough, it should still be a worthwhile play. I’m trying not to make this a reputation-on-the-line thing, (I know what some might assume I could do with 100% focus), just something for fun to see what happens.

You ROCK. I’m super impressed with your intention to do it “pure”.

Best of luck, I can’t wait to see what you make.

My first Ludum Dare

Hey, everybody, it’s my first Ludam Dare! I’m EFFIN’ excited!

Here’s what I’ll be using to make my game

Language: ActionScript 3

Engine: FlashPunk

Graphics: Graphics Gale, Photoshop CS4

Audio: sfxr for sound effects, either musagi or Anvil Studio for the music, and Audacity for any post-processing

IDE: FlashDevelop

Dock challenges LD18!

I’m up for LD18!! I’ll be doing my entry at CB2Bistro with many other Cambridge and UK people.

My goals this time are to make something a little more polished, with title screen, music, sound effects and everything in place.  I’m giving myself strict time limits so that I don’t spend too long on graphics, design, or let any one task harm the project. Thankfully my new laptop is much nicer to develop on, so I should be comfortable.  Also: No penguins!!!

Here are the tools I’ll be using:

  • Engine: Unity, with Monodevelop IDE.
  • Libraries: iTween for lerping
  • Graphics: Photoshop, 3DSMax
  • Audio: SFXR, Garageband, Audacity.

But I want more penguins… :/

Good luck either way! I’m looking forward to see the result! :)
19. Aug 2010 · 16:23 UTC
gah, why are ALL your LD games so pretty? D:
19. Aug 2010 · 17:05 UTC
We all want more penguins but you must resist and not become a sellout, sure you could become rich making penguin games but do you really want to do that? 😉
20. Aug 2010 · 07:36 UTC
Often I don’t intend to use penguins, and they happen by accident. They’re a really easy last minute thing to use! XD

The story so far

Everyone should do one of these. Here’s mine:

ld-mjau

Been a while since I successfully entered an LD apparently, so I’ll try to do something about that. Haven’t decided what to use for this one yet, but hey, that’s what the first few hours of the compo is for… right?

Another Newcomer

I’m not sure if I’ll be able to enter this weekend, but hopefully I will.

I’m currently planning on using these:

  • Language: Java
  • Libraries: Slick2D
  • IDE: Eclipse
  • Sounds Effects: sfxr
  • Music: musagi (If I have time for music)
  • Graphics: Paint.NET
  • Physics: Phys2D (If I’m in need of physics)

Hope I can make it!

Hah your LD18 screenshot made me “lol woot” at first moment 😀

I guess by now you are pretty comfortable in using Unity in LD and we can wait for something more or less playable and fun :)
19. Aug 2010 · 19:22 UTC
It’s great that you were doing this aaages ago, I had no idea you did LD10!!

Really looking forward to seeing what you do this time :) Hope you get your preferred theme! XD

You don’t have to have music for your compo entry. Many, if not most, do not.
