So much for my declaration.
I’ve managed to get SFML 2.0 (beta) working with Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.0, so that’s what I’m going with. My sample game for SFML 1.6 works more or less (a few bugs), but it is close enough that I shouldn’t have too much of a problem. I don’t have a framework. I’m going to try to assemble one as I go along this weekend. Because I want to devote a lot of time to graphics, sounds and music this competition, if time is low, I may opt to just use MMF2 to just throw a game together. Hopefully I can manage to use SFML and include some more interesting game logic and algorithms.
My plan for friday night is already set:
Write down the idea on a set of flash cards and get the planning all down. One card for each screen, one card for each story element, one for each graphic needed, sounds, music, etc.
Then I will jump in and do all the art I can manage (until I’m done or more likely frustrated) and that includes the scanning and coloring, but I will probably hold off on any animations until sat.
Then I will write the music for the game. I plan to have at least two songs. One for the intro and one for the actual game. Possibly another for the ending. We’ll see, maybe more if I get inspired. I love making music (even if you don’t love listening to it). Getting the music done first is important to me, because the music will really set the tone for the entire game (happy game, sad game, etc, thanks to the music).
The sounds I will probably save for sunday. If i am short on time, I will just use SFXR. Otherwise, I would like to use my voice or use foley to create the sounds by hand. That will be interesting to try, but I’m not sure how much time I’ll need to devote to that kind of process. Hopefully there will just be a couple sound effects needed.
My goal is to do all of the animation and then game coding on Saturday, so I have all sunday just to tweek and improve the gameplay.
I have already decided that I will try to make a “Arty” game without a lot of gameplay, but hopefully it looks cool, sounds cool, has an interesting story or at least baffles the mind.
That is the plan, anyway. We will see how it goes!
