LD 40 December 1–4, 2017

LD So far...

Wow! My first LD has been a blast! I got my 20 ratings in the first day thanks to everybody who came to check out my game. So many people left helpful comments, reported on bugs, or left kind comments, its amazing. I will definitely be participated next time and telling all my friends about this.

My game Tiny Empires was super fun to make and its awesome seeing so many people enjoy it as well. I do plan to release a post LD version the day that the rate period ends. So far about 3 hours in working on it I've squashed all those pesky bugs, if only I did that before the deadline! I'm really excited to implement all these cool features. For those who did play my game and are excited for a post LD version, its coming! AND here is a little screenshot.

SneakPeakTE.png

For those who have yet to play my game, go give it a try! Also comment your feedback and give me a link to your game, I would love to play some gems that aren't getting the love they deserve.

Thanks!

Mizu - Post mortem

Basic gist

Mizu is a 2D platformer where you use water on your advantage.

scr2.png

You play as a kitchen glass that is able to jump around, but also to take in water and use it to put out fires or to press down heavy swtiches in order to open up new paths. The only problem is that the more water you take in the slower you will move and the shortest you will jump, so you have to be careful and play smart according to the situation. To make matters worse, this game's world is full of nasty pitfalls and mad and violent forks that will try to stop you from reaching your goal.

You can play it right here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/mizu

Development

Day 1

Since I live in Europe I didn't learn of the theme until Saturday morning, and to make matters worse I kind of overslept. Around 10:00AM I crept out of bed, checked the theme and got straight into the shower (is a lovely place to think about stuff). Surprisingly I almost immediately came up with the glass full of water concept. I also wanted to do a platformer focused on a simple mechanic and explore it in many scenarios, so I quickly started drawing and planning the scope and needs of the game.

Captura de pantalla 2017-12-07 a las 19.33.36.png

After that I started coding up the basic platforming system and the map parsing classes, in order to be able to easliy create maps with the Tiled editor <3

I use HaxeFlixel and I'm quite used to it by now, but I ran intro some trouble when loading the tilemaps in tmx format, all because Tiled had a new version that doesn't use a simple reference to the image file you are using for your tileset. Anyway, figuring that out chew away some valuable time, but apart from that coding went by smoothly. I finished up around 23:00 and then decided to have dinner, watch a movie and go to bed.

 Day 2

Woke up early and started drawing sprites, tiles and any other kind of graphic resource that I thought was going to be needed. Making sprites for the character was a bit of a pain, considering that I had to replicate any animation in every state the glass was, that is, for every amount of water the player was going to be able to carry I had to make a whole set of animations. Luckily for me I set on a really easy to animate character that only has two feet and a pair of eyes, so everything went faster than expected.

I also implemented a few things that I had left to do, like switches and moving blocks. I also decided that killing enemies wasn't any fun, so I removed that option and kept the game completely based on jumping, avoiding and your puzzle-solving skills, which I think was the right choice.

By 19:00 I started making the levels, which was a lot of fun and actually didn't take long, considering I had everything completely set up and I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted to do on each level. My initial plan of a tutorial level + 5 normal levels changed into 1 tutorial level and 3 normal levels, as I condensed some gameplay ideas into the levels I already had. Luckily no bugs appeared at any point and everything went super smooth, which is something I'm quite proud of (I have a long history of Ludum Dares when I'm fixing a game crashing bug at the last moment...).

By 23:00 the game was uploaded and fully playable online, which left me some time to start checking out the rest of games you people had been making as well.

scr4.png

Conclusion

Overall I'm quite pleased with my entry. I managed to deliver something that is complete, focused and is fully implemented. The mechanics of the game are clear and the game design does its best to showcase them. The game has a full graphic set with animations and also features SFX and music. Also, there weren't many bugs to talk about, and so far the game has received pretty good reviews. It's been a long time since my last attempt at a Ludum Dare (early 2016 I think) and seems like I'm back in my game jam shape :)

The good

  • The game explores a single mechanic and tries to use it in as many situations as possible, while keeping the game simple and yet challenging.
  • Graphics and music wise the game is complete and is not missing anything.
  • I managed to do all this without being stressed or having to cut out on sleep time, overall, I did it all in a day and a half's work.
  • Amazingly, people seem to be enjoying my crappy music!

The bad

  • The tileset should have been bigger, allowing for more diverse and rich enviroments.
  • There should've been indications on how much water do you need to push each button.
  • I should have made more levels, but had to condense the ideas I had in fewer levels to keep the game focused.
  • Had to deal with some nasty Tiled vs HaxeFlixel crap.
  • Windows and Linux versions are missing, but HaxeFlixel seems to be reluctant about the matter since I upgraded to OS X High Sierra.

Anyway, that's all for today.

BREAKING NEWS - GAME NEEDS RATINGS HELP!

Hey! So I know there are 20 days but I am still promoting my game. I think you should give it a try, some people have found it really addictive playing it for a couple hours. Game Crash Fix in Life's a Glitch

Some players noticed that the game would occasionally crash, and were not shy in pointing out the irony of this in a game about glitches and data corruption.

Good news is that this crash has been located and fixed! Some also found a collision bug which has now also been fixed.

Thank you to those who have played and rated Life's a Glitch so far.

Spacelitch Broke 20

We got off to a slow start, but then ratings started coming in more rapidly, and this morning we broke the 20 vote mark, with Spacelitch now standing at 23. Now I would still love more ratings/comments, because the feedback is where we learn where people struggle, what we did right, etc. So I'll present a small introduction.

What is Spacelitch?

Spacelitch is a retro shoot-em-up where your bullets may bounce and come back at you. This was our interpretation of the theme; don't button mash, you may regret it.

LD40_Spacelitch.gif

Who do I play as?

There's a small story driving the game. These are the characters below. You play as only one of them, but I promise you he's the cutest.

cast.png

I wanted to do voice overs for the dialogue originally, but we simply ran out of time. When it was 2:00am (just an hour before the 3:00am deadline here in Central European Time) I had very little voice left from talking with my team on Discord all day. That said, you mostly play as a space fighter jet.

Do you rate back?

Yes! Over the coming weeks I will continue to rate games, though I usually hang out among games that need to get their 20, so if your game has 80 ratings I will generally pick one that has 9 next to it first. I try to be objective and thorough in my feedback, which means I take my time playing and writing my comments, so I don't power through a lot of games a night. Now that we have our 20, I will revisit the friendly folks that have rated Spacelitch already and repay the courtesy.

Thanks to everyone for making Ludum Dare such a positive experience! And feel free to post your game in the comments if you'd like me to rate it.

EDIT: Also, I'm about halfway done sorting through my screenshots for my pixelart/level design timelapse video, so stay tuned!

Too Many Stressful LD Games? We've got you!

LD40-Screenshot.png

The LD40 theme seems to have produced a high number of games that get very stressful, very quickly. The challenges are fun & stress can be a great motivator in a game, but stress overload can wear you out quickly.

Luckily, we had that in mind for our entry, and we've branched out and made a calming tree-drawing game.

Desert Express arrives onto macOS (mostly...)

So I managed to build a macOS version of our game, Desert Express, thanks to a wonderful colleague who lent me her MacBook. Now I just have to figure out how to package it properly.

express_macos.gif

I have never actually used a Mac for more than a couple of hours, so it took a bit of work to get the game built on this new and alien platform :). Despite what can be laughably called my "engine" using SDL, which abstracted away the platform-specific stuff, some code changes had to be made, since LLVM turned out to be more stringent then other compilers and also due to some runtime issues, which did not occur on other platforms.

Of course, these changes were just to get the game working and no new features were added or anything relating to gameplay or content changed in macOS build. What did happen though, is that in the process of adapting the code for LLVM and macOS a crash, that sometimes happened during the game, was fixed. So, interestingly enough, this version turned out to be more stable then the originals for Linux and Windows.

I'm hesitant to backport the corresponding changes to Windows and Linux though, given that said crash occurred not quite often enough for it to be considered a game-breaking bug, especially given the fact that our game, as it stands in the jam version, for better or worse, features no progression and a very short play cycle (under 1 minute), meaning that even if the game crashes, the player can just restart without losing any significant progress.

Anyway, as for the packaging, I used CMake to generate an .app folder, which is, as far as I understand, one way people distribute macOS applications. I know Unity packages its games' Mac builds like that. What I haven't figured out yet is how to properly bundle dynamic libraries, on which the app depends. I understand that it's not quite as simple as Windows, where you can just put all of the .dll files in the same directory as the executable and you're good to go. So until I work out how to make the .app self-sufficient, it will be necessary for players to install some runtime dependencies via Homebrew before launching the .app on their Mac.

If this is not a big deal for you and you'd like to try Desert Express on your Mac, you can do brew install libvorbis sdl2 sdl2_image sdl2_mixer sdl2_ttf boost, then go to our game's page and check out the newly released macOS build.

In the meantime, if any experienced Mac developers have some advice to give on the subject, it would be much appreciated.

Have fun playing all of the wonderful LD games this month!

Screen.png

The lighting is a bit uglier than the Windows version, and I had to optimize the shadows a bit, but it plays smoothly otherwise. Enjoy!

I taught myself blender in 4 days.

I had 0 experience making games, 0 experience modeling assets and 0 experience 4 days prior to this when my friend said I should make assets for him. So I hit the books and here's what we made. I'd like to think that I've made a lot of progress from following a forest asset tutorial for an hour to trying to flesh out the interior of a car at 4AM and accidentally putting a phallic hood ornament that was supposed to be a monkey. Interestingly enough, since most of my learning took place over the 72 hours you can actually see my progression from the very crappy textures in the bar scene to the parked car obstacles.

Definitely give the game a shot and tell me what you think of the graphics and how I can improve

Play :pointright:here:pointleft:

While I feel like I've developed my skills, I know there's a lot for me to learn and I'm excited to work on new projects in the future.

MAJOR UPDATE

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/justify-the-means

ldj-submit-pic3.jpg

I have reworked a number of things.

  • The final level is a fair bit different now, I’ve tried to make it more of a challenge and more necessary to keep topping up your magic/arcanum to keep the numbers of the monsters down.

  • I have also tried to lower the particle amount, so if you’re on a low level PC please let me know if you still experience lag.

  • I also tried to make the UI a bit easier to see and understand.

Thanks everyone for playing and for the helpful feedback!!

What I've Learned on Polishing the Game

Slick graphics are a surefire way to have a game that looks polished. But for the art-challenged developers out there like myself, what are the options?

Shameless plug: please rate my game :-) https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/a-stack-of-gifts

I've found there's another level to "polishing" and some easy things (which admittedly I skipped out on a few myself this time) one can do. Here's my top 5:

  1. A small animation left or right is subtle yet unconsciously adds to polish. In my Stack of Gifts game this LD, I have animated the text announcements when you get a powerup or get extra points for a trick. The animation system in Unity provides an easy, visual way to set where and how the text moves, and it's time-based. I tweaked how long the text was visible as I playtested. Simple. And, about an hour before submission I noticed the powerup wasn't clearly a powerup. It looked like a gift and too much like a UI icon or something. So I made it slowly move in a circle and low and behold it totally looks like a powerup! Half hour before submissions I swapped my stupid static background of paint-like Christmas trees for Blender-made low poly cones looking like Christmas trees, and gave them a random-colored light turning on and off. Again, easy work but adds some subtle polish.
  2. Text. I totally skimped on this (except for the title screen) but: change the default fonts to something fun! For static text in UI etc - just use a cool font in your favorite image editor and add it as a UI image instead of using the text features of your game engine. If you have time left at the end, color them in or texture them or something. Yeah, I missed this one.
  3. 3D shapes. With Unity it's easy to add a block or sphere or whatever and make some 3D structure resemble something. But honestly it doesn't take a lot of effort to learn to do those basics in Blender too. Once you're there you can add a few more touches to make it less "standard shape" looking. Or split up the shape in multiple shapes allowing for easy coloring of different parts without texturing (see the santa in my game). And, if time permits in the end, UV unwrap and actually add a texture. My game is actually 3D and I had more plans: the sleighs at the top are actually 3D objects, not an image. But it didn't look cool enough and ran outta time. But I did put a texture on it (again, it's not a UI image :-)
  4. No time for music this time, too bad because your mood score will go WAY up immediately. You can find free publicly availablee stuff you can use if you're not musically inclined. But sfxr or bfxr are SUPER easy ways to add small sound effects to your game. Little effort but decent returns.
  5. Again one I violated but - in Unity find a nice texture or something instead of the standard "panel" UI backgrounds. It looks too "default". Make a nice border you can use or something. Again small effort but it all adds up.

Hope you enjoyed my top 5 cheap polish tips. Now go rate some games, including mine here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/a-stack-of-gifts

I need ratings!

Well, the title says enough actually. Insomnia (the current version) is an extremely short (1-2 minutes) Android game that I conjured up for the Jam.

I already have major stuff planned out, though I'd probably make it a sequel rather than change literally everything. Plus the code of the current version is messy.

Anyway, if you can spare a few minutes, play Insomnia (WITH AUDIO thank you very much) and give me ratings and maybe even comments!

Thanks a lot.!

Tiny Bullets: Now Tinier Than Ever!

So some people were saying the download size was quite large. And I agree. So I went back and got rid of all the unnecessary folders and files to make a smaller version! The download size has gone from 409MB to 172MB. Still probably quite large compared to most Ludum Dare games, but this seems to be the smallest I can get it. There also may be a slight performance boost to those running Potato.OS due to the removal of motion blur. dunno if it will actually do anything but I guess we'll see!

A post mortem to ludum dare 40.

Everything started well, we got an ideea for the game, a tetris survival where you would play a little tetris block trying to escape the arcade machine, but it all went downhill from that.

In the first day i tried to make the game spawn randomly generated tetris blocks and i managed to do that in a confined space, the problem of the game began when we started a little play test and realized that the game would be too chaotic and not fun at all, most of the time getting you stuck between two pieces or the levels generated made no sense, so i started working on a way to make them have some sort of sense while still being a bit random, needless to say i failed.

In the second day i thought that it would be much better if you controlled the tetris blocks as well as the little block that tries to escape the arcade, i made the game work in a grid based environment of 10 width and a height that was increasing by the number of blocks already placed , working hard on this day i didnt get time to play test it , and i went to sleep thinking it would be fine.

The third day, the day of the doom, after a few fine tunings to the numbers the player character feeling pretty smooth , i decided its time for a little play test, and discovered a game breaking bug that would haunt me till the end of the ludum dare, the problem was that when the camera started moving upwards the spawner would move upwards as well, this lead to a number of problems one of which was the fact that some of the blocks overlapped each other, only now i realize that i could have incremented the spawning block by a flat in of 1 and this bug would have been gone , but too little too late.

I will try again in the next ludum dare, i have learned a few things, and will be better prepared the next time. For now rest in peace my little tetris attempt.

Bugfix in third party library

Hi people,

I found a bug in a third party library which could destroy a newly crafted item, when the first item slot is used by an other item. Fixed the bug in the third party lib and uploaded the fixed version. The fixed code is not part of the original game project but for a third party library which is used (JCInventory). Hope this is not against the rules of the compo.

I had not really thought about what happens after the deadline before and I think it might be my favourite bit. Now to get the last 15 ratings in for my game and I will be happy. Leave me a comment on Run Guys and I will do my best to play and rate your game (Although I am Mac only :( )

Postmortem "A Platformer for Ants".

This is the first time I'm doing a postmortem, but I think this time the game really deserves it.

You can play it here!

I participated alone in the Jam modality. I wanted to participate in the Compo, but I really wasn't feeling that I was able to achieve something, so I taked it easy. I woke up at 9am, the LD starts here at 3am but I needed the sleep. When I saw the theme, "The more you have, the worse it is" I really liked it. But every idea I had was "if you pick up this items, that you NEED to pick up, the game becomes harder!". I really hated that kind of ideas. I started to procastinate a little, It wasn't until 11am that I got the idea of "the more you explore, the less (or more) you see".

I felt a huge motivation after having an original idea for once. I'm not the best of designers and generally my ideas suck. This time was different, I got something cool to work on it. So, I started to prototype the core mechanic: the zoom of the camera.

first prototype.gif

I got it working in no time. After lunch I got the zoom working and a few stages made. I was trying the new Unity 2017 tilemap editor and it really made the things easier. In the other hand, I don't know why, Visual Studio 2017 didn't work as well as it did Visual Studio 2015. That pushed me back a little trying to solve those errors (with no results...). Anyway, the core mechanic was made and I started to make some sprites to make the thing pretty.

9c75.gif

Long story short, I'm no artist and I always feel very frustrated trying to reproduce my vision of the game to actual assets. This time was no different. I spent hours and hours (the entire evening and night) making the sprites you see in the gif. Only the tileset, the character is from OpenGameArt. I wanted to change it, but the times I tried to make something moving were always a waste of time.

photoem2017-12-03/em01-24-25.jpg

I went to bed very frustrated: "I have an amazing idea, but in the end the game will be ugly and nobody will play it". That depressed me a lot. I didn't wanted to continue the game. That's always the reason I don't finish my projects.

But in the morning the tweets and comments telling me that the game looked cool helped me a little. I spent the morning working in the family business so I couldn't work in the game, but after lunch I started to work again. I made more sprites and give some light to the scene to improve the looks a bit.

That went nice, the sprites were still ugly but the light always help to see everything better (well, that has some logic thinking of it).

ezgif-4-5f078b49f6.gif

The motivation went out when I wasn't sure what more to do with the game. I didn't have a name either. So, my girlfriend told me "do some more stages, give a final to the game, and then we'll see". And I did that. Some final efforts to "finish" the game. I made an enemy, I made some stages and I put a timer to see how well you did.

The name went after that, when she told me that the game was for ants. The game was baptized. After that I polished it a bit on monday, I've added the music, some sounds and fixed some bugs.

What went well - I got an amazing idea - I implemented it very fast - I slept my hours

What went wrong - Problems with Visual Studio - Getting down with my insecurities multiple times - Getting stuck with art

Tools - Unity 2017 - Visual Studio 2017 - Aseprite

After the jam I improved the game with better platforming and some suggestions and the game improved a lot. I'm really happy and overwhelmed with the reception and good comments.

Thanks a lot for reading me and for playing my game. It really means something. Here you go a behind the scenes screenshot!

My first week feels about my first Ludum dare.

We already tried participatig with our teem and wasn't able to finish anything worth playing in time before. But we learned some lessons, to cut features, to make easier contept, and finally we did it.

We played other peoples games and these were amazing, it was lovely to see so many people creating such great projects in such time! But without our own game we felt a bit left out and didn't really feel the whole aspect of community around event.

But now, we did happen to finish game in time and there where the best time of Ludum Dare began. It is so fun to watch other people streamig and giving feedback to your game, watch them play other games, rating them, talking in the comments, on streams, we finally became a part of this wonderous community. We already break the minimum to get a score and this was exciting. The game had some rough edges and people justly pointed them out, there was comments about how good some mechanic in game was. It whole communication made me feel like a part of big gamedev community and I liked it!

Thank you for reading through this and come play our game and we will happily play yours(in case we missed it, all games are great, but there is just too many!)

Any other VR games out there?

Hi, we made a virtual reality game for this ludum dare and found that it is really hard to get feedback, as there are still only a handful of us who use VR headsets.

If you have submitted a VR game yourself---or know of a good one---please let us know, because we'll try to play and rate as many as we can over the weekend. We have both a Vive and a Rift+Touch, both with a play-space of about 3mx3m.

We're looking forward to playing your VR games!

Also if you happen to have a headset we'd be happy for feedback on our own game as well.

List of rated games

Hi guys.

Where can I find the list of games which I rated? (As on the previous http://ludumdare.com/)

We decided to finish "Shoot off their lumps" in the next 20 days XD

03bfe90a32238d58a1499e8fbb3b3f83 (1).gif

First of all, thanks, everyone who left feedback about our game. We decided to DIG DEEPER. It might be very crazy, but we will try to finish our game in the next 20 days. It will be our Ludum dare extreme mode XD

What will it be in the end? The idea is about exploring derelict spaceships to find supplies and scraps to upgrade your ship. Each ship will have few terminals so you can hack into the ship systems and control doors, defense systems ( for example order drones to kill all creatures in the room ).

I won't make autogenerated level ( although it's fit here as we have rooms like in The Binding of Isaac ), instead I will try to make exciting levels with some scenarios and different mood. For example, you may explore the ship and suddenly find that doors you came from not working anymore, and you have to find a new way back to your vessel. Or asteroid is heading right into the ship, and you need to hurry up.

Right now I'm working on simple editor to ease my level making process.

Post-Jam modifications for Greed Mania

Hello there,

After considering some feedbacks, I decided to improve my humble arcade game a little bit. Here the additions:

  • Police car: The police car will appear after 5 new bandits and it may arrest one or more of them. giphy.gif

  • The population: Now you know how populated the world is. It is separated between "bandits busted" and "bandits on the loose". The greater is one of the population, the higher the tension. If the tension is high enough, a rebellion or a special operation will trigger. Captura de tela de 2017-12-07 17-26-50.png

  • The border is slightly modified: Now you have the "safe border" and the "danger border". The hit box for our hero was also worked on to be a little more forgiving.

Captura de tela de 2017-12-08 10-06-05.png

  • The high score is now saved.

  • Full screen support!!!!!! ( :P ) and the sound is not so loud.

Can you make it to the 2000 points? Here is the link:

Mountain Diver - Postmortem

After having failed to submit Thunderbolts and Lightning on LD39 because of some vast miscalculations about the scope of the entry, I was determined to submit this time at all costs. I was relatively happy with it even if, as always, there is a lot of room for improvement.

Here is the link to Mountain Diver’s page on the LD site. Please play it and rate it :grinning:

cover-pixel.png

Tech/Tools

  • Unity 2017, plus the free DOTween plugin for interpolation.
  • Aseprite, with Photoshop CS6 for additional processing.
  • Recordr, Jfxr and Audacity for audio.
  • To track tasks I used Trello. Below is a screenshot of my board by the time I submitted:

trello.PNG

Process

I learned about the theme at around 6 or 7. After a couple more hours of sleep, I went outside to have breakfast and do some brainstorming. This time I thought the theme was pretty good and it could spawn lots of different ideas, so it didn’t take me long to start coming up with concepts. You can check the notes in the following video:

https://youtu.be/DnKnW5opwVU

Of all those, two started to take shape relatively soon: * The first one was inspired by a verbal blunder of Spain’s PM (he’s mastered those f*ck ups into an art to the point there’s even a Monkey Island-inspired parody game). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGGtSHtaEfI This stuck with me the whole morning the way bad songs do. Eventually it evolved into a full “corruption simulator” game idea, where your goal would be to arrange contracts with corporations in exchange for commissions. Those could be used to finance your party, bribe the press or enrich yourself, but if you were too greedy you would attract the attention of the anti corruption brigades, exposing yourself to jail and electoral defeat. The last notes on the video reflect how I had started to approach this. While I liked the concept the more that I developed it the less convinced I was about it. I also feared that it would be too local and some jokes (read: envelopes) would be missed by a non-Spanish audience.

  • The second was a bit more personal. It revolved around how as time passes and you keep accumulating fears and doubts the harder it gets to speak up your mind, share your true feelings, or simply take action. I was thinking of some linear action-RPG game with some choices. However, every time until now I've tried to translate more intimate stuff into a game I just go blank trying to bridge the gap between the “plot” and the core mechanic (a perfect example of the point I wanted to make, on the other hand). Also, this was likely to have gone out of scope easily.

Time was passing while I kept trying to decide what to do, falling into yet another one of the concepts I’d sketched: Analysis paralysis. I had been thinking of so many different things that I couldn't pick one. Eventually the free-fall / climb mechanic that would become Mountain Diver came to mind. In comparison it was way simpler than the other two (which was good scope-wise), and it just sort of felt right. The winter mountain setting would come naturally some hours after that.

As soon as I had the idea proper development started I started focusing on the player movement and the camera. I’ll deal with these on the next sections, this has already become too long.

What went well:

  • The scope was very scalable. Even if I missed key features such as multiple levels or even level generation, the core gameplay was simple enough and is solid.

  • Change in mechanics. Originally I had added an energy attribute that would be depleted during the climbing stage. Picking crystals would increase the depletion rate, effectively making the game harder. I’d also considered encumbrance, impairing jumps, but At some point I just ditched the energy and went on to experiment with the crystals <=> platforms idea. Now I believe it was the right choice.

The theme connection was still there and it laid the ground for some more interesting choices (“Shall I pick this or that? will it be too hard for me to jump then? If I don’t, will I still be able to pick the required ones even if I need to use the boost?”) I had to make some adjustments so players that had failed at the diving stage could still have a chance at beating the level and, while that part wasn’t fully balanced, I also think it played the part nicely (even if the boost was buggy)

  • Camera not too clunky. Together with the controls this was one of my main concerns and I’m more or less happy with how the camera works (although it’s by no means perfect). I’d been following an awesome study I found some time ago about 2D cameras and chose some classic target tracking, smoothed with interpolation, plus edge snapping and, on the second part of the game, platform snapping.

  • Sound. Just two hours before the deadline I decided to try to put some sounds. I didn’t want to just use 100% generated effects and I thought it would be a good fit to have at least some wind blowing (at that point I didn’t have the snow particles either) and some basic sounds for user feedback, so I downloaded a recording app and started to blow at the phone.

  • Relatively comfortable development pacing. I did iterate quite a bit with controls, the camera and even the main mechanic, but at no point did I get the impression of being stuck or sluggish.

  • No tech issues. For LD39 I’d switched from Unity 5.5 to Unity 2017.1, and it was a bit unstable, with lots of crashes over the 3 days (I was never sure if that was Unity’s fault, that I’d enabled the experimental new .NET support or perhaps Touchscript not being fully compatible). This time it all worked flawlessly.

What went wrong:

  • Belated start. By the time I finally committed to the dive/climb idea it was past 17h. I don’t generally start coding before lunch, but still I wasted a couple of hours sketching things for the corruption idea or just deciding.

  • The most important thing to me: Glitchy controls, and slippery horizontal motion. I was using acceleration-based calculations for movement, and even if I’d added some drag it still felt too hard for everyone who tested it. I still feel the sting of guilt when someone tells me “I’ve tried your game, but I’m so bad at it”. I could just cheat and say "oh yeah, it's intended to be hard", or "well, you're on the snow, so of course you'll slip", but I'd be lying. It was broken all along :flushed:.

For example, a stupid mistake I made was not paying attention to the differences in input devices. The game was slightly less slippery on a gamepad, and I didn't realise that on a keyboard (which was what most people were using) the amount of horizontal impulse was just 0 or 1 (on the gamepad you'd get a broader range), making it less permissive. In the end I removed acceleration, and it seems to be better now.

Additionally, the boost skill is mapped to a separate input than the jump. I’d tried to have both on the same button, but given the way the jump works it didn’t feel right, so I added a separate button to control the boost's charge and release. Still, it was quite buggy and had to patch it too. I’m tempted to revisit all that logic and try to combine them again now to see how it works.

  • No proper character art. I ran out of time to create some decent sprite for the main character and animations, and the placeholder I’d created to sketch how it would look like made it into the final build. I like the design, but it wasn’t final by any means.

  • Insufficient feedback. It takes a while for most people to realise about the catch of the game. While I wanted players to discover it by themselves and potentially keep playing the level to improve their score, I think I could have added some in-game hints to communicate it beter. For exampe, I had in mind camera changes (travellings, increasing the distance so there was more visible space and could anticipate better, or maybe some visual cues).

  • Timed out. Nothing new here. Just look at the Trello screenshot from before

Recap

Despite the initial frustration at deciding the game I wanted to make and the issues with controls I really enjoyed making Mountain Diver. As always, I’d like to keep improving it a bit, but, also as always, I can’t predict if I’ll stick to it for long.

Thank you for reading up to this part, and if you try the game I hope you enjoy it!

Little experience feedback on my first Ludum Dare - Part 2

This article follows this one.

Fourth stage: probably the most complicated. It is about writing down all the rules of the game, and updating all the data involved. It is also the opportunity to redistribute the code in several Javascript files, just to make it easier to find your way around. It is also a first balancing phase. At this point, only one button is implemented, found on the excellent OpenGameArt site, to pass the turn and see the parameters evolve. The background has also been changed. Finally, it is time to add the conditions of victory and defeat.

Capture-etape3.JPG

Fifth step: we finally start giving the player the power to act! The "End of turn" button finds its place, and all the possible choices are available. All buttons act on the player's rules.

Capture-etape4.JPG

Step six: This time, it's with the neighbors that the player can interact! It is also an opportunity, given the time pressure, to change the market system to make it much simpler.

Capture-etape5.JPG

Seventh step: that's all well and good, the buttons work, the game can work and that's not too bad at all, but something is missing... Something very important... Indeed, let's get back to the basic question: how can the player understand what he is doing and why? It is simply missing a help! A first version is therefore put in place, which will prove to be the final version for lack of time. English is not my strong suit (I'm a French cliché, I tell you!), so I'm getting a little help. A "Help" button is added and accessible at any time.

Capture-etape6.JPG

The final maybe tomorrow! In the meantime, you can test, comment and rate my game here;)

BirdBrain Update v1.1 and Trailer now available!

UPDATE v1.1 -

Made a small update post-jam to fix a few small issues and do a tiny bit of optimization. In particular, the file size is now less than half the previous build! The update includes:

  • Fixed autotiling errors;

  • Camera and screenshake fix;

  • Gamepad input crash on game over fix;

  • Difficulty balancing;

  • Music/sound optimization.

This update brings the game a little closer to my original vision and should provide a better overall experience for players! Enjoy and thanks everyone :D

[OFFTOPIC] I need your input for a MOBA game survey!

Hi, I am doing a research on MOBA games (Dota 2, League of Legends, Smite, etc.) and I need your input. It is anonymous and it won’t take more than 3-5 minutes. This report will be public and may even help the development of the game. I know surveys are annoying, but they really make a difference. Every response helps! Thank you in advance! https://goo.gl/forms/DIovZlfQW1ZDEkFA3

I made it!

My game got 20 ratings! I'll be playing a bunch over the weekend, too, so comment your game below!
