Spend the lifesource of a battery - But spend it right :)

In Battery Life you play a battery who has to use it's energy to manipulate the environment. The poor battery has to escape through the blue doors and you have to guide it. The game is a top-down action/puzzler game.

You are all really awesome!!!

A small bugfix, a world if difference!

We've pushed a small bigfix out what allows the player to keep running when on the obstacles, how it was designed to be.

Also hosted on AWS rather than Itch.io to see if that reduces complaints about input lag.

The joy of failure

Last week I entered the Ludum Dare game jam for the very first time. It was so much fun, but I also made quite some mistakes. And I love that! Here are some of the lessons I learned.

Any feedback is appriciated, so please check out my game.

The wrong ratings

Knowing I didn't have any audio because I ran out of time, I wanted to disable rating for sound. But instead I accidentally opted out for graphics, which is probably the biggest selling point of the game. It's a silly mistake, but it really screws up my ratings at the moment.

Scope too big

Of course! We all have been there, haven't we? I think I don't have to explain this one.

No end game

When the game starts it is told that you have to reach the core to destroy the mainframe. Spoiler alert: there is no core and there is no mainframe to destroy. Next time I'll start with the end game condition and work my way back to the start of the game.

Unable to choose between procedural generated and hand crafted

When I first started I intended to make a procedural generated planet. The player would be free to explore, going either left or right. But somehow I ended up crafting the planet by hand in an attempt to better control the player experience. I feel procedural generated is definitely the way forward to a post-jam version of the game.

As a result only a portion of the planet is finished. When mrjoshuamclean streamed my game he actually got around the part that was finished, drifted endlessly into space and hit an out-of-bounds crash. I fixed that by adding invisible walls and a message that tells the player this is all there is for now. It's better to be honest about it than to allow player get lost.

Too hard

The main problem here is that some enemies start shooting even before they're visible in the player's view. The wiggle of the shooting direction contributes as well, since enemy behavior is even less predictable. I should have narrowed down the overall movement speed and ranges.

Dev tools still present

I like to have some dev tools available, like displaying player coordinates and being able to decrease or increase certain stats like shield. In the initial build some of the dev tools were still present. I patches them out pretty quickly, but I had to go all over my code to remove them manually. Right now I have a global DEV_MODE flag.

No playtesting

Next time I definitely should have some friends ready to playtest the game. I learned so much from people streaming my game on Twitch, but it was rather embarrassing seeing them struggle with design aspects I deemed to be helpful.

Game jams are all about learning. Making mistakes is good!

I've recorded walktrough of my game - Lifeless Space

It's very short yet - so for reviewing it's great. It was my first jam, but I'll hopefully add more levels in the future :D

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6UnwaQKQIU

There are some explanation and design ideas described. If you like to play this game there is the HTML5 game on itch.io: https://paweljarosz.itch.io/lifeless-space

If you enjoyed this, please rate it on https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/lifeless-space

I'm currently reviewing other games, so I hope I'll have enough time to rate all of the submissions, there are so many awesome games! :D

Aloha!

No, I'm not Fijian, I just need a post introduction and this works.

This is my game; Sigillis! It's a game where the only form of input is drawing stuff on the screen. if you haven't tried it yet, then you totally should! A 'techlog' is coming around soon, that will detail the technology behind the Pattern Recognition Algorithm, and so far, it's some pretty interesting stuff. If you'd like, you can subscribe to my LD account to be notified of when that rolls around.

You're invited to play the game here and then rate here. If you can muster the time, I would greatly appreciate feedback on it too, I'm currently hard at work implementing suggestions from the community!

I'm thinking that I'll trial releasing mobile builds with the patch tomorrow. Android is easy to build to, but hot damn does Apple like making it hard. According to this blog post you can freely export to IOS from windows, but just look at that tutorial! There's so many steps! And honestly, the game wasn't even built with mobile in mind, so the buttons will probably be too small. Nothing small changes couldn't fix, it just becomes a pain when there are two slightly different versions, each of which need updating separately.

Anyways, I'll see what I can do about that tomorrow. You guys have suggested a mobile build, and whilst I'd agree that a mobile version has potential, I think it'll need some work to make the game usable. The biggest issue will be the size of the colour palette, but regardless of what happens, I'm still so thankful for the input I've received from the community! So thank you to all that have lent me a hand, and provided invaluable feedback. Cheers!
