Check Out Tally Marks

Title Screen2.png

Hey! If you've missed out on our game please take a look at it. It means a lot to me and I'd love some more feed back on it! Some of you have left some killer comments <3

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/tally-marks

We're currently working on our post-jam version and we're having a lot of fun!

dunk2.gif After the nice feedback we got from you, we decided to continue working on our project for some time. We started by refining the physics, eliminating some strange wobbeling here and there. Also we implemented bouncing stuff, which is a lot of fun. We are now adding to the story to minimize the confusion of some players in the beginning and including more levels with different challenges.

Loopomotive post jam: We want to do this!

Thanks to your feedback and support, we have decided that we're not done with Loopomotive yet. We want to take this game to the next level: implement some new mechanics, fine-tune and improve what we have, add new levels and content... We're thinking about PC and mobile, and 100% free to play as this is just a small project. We still want this to be a simple and mind-numbing kind of game, but better. We have read carefully every single comment and will implement some of the ideas we've received!

If you haven't yet, please play Loopomotive and give us feedback. Thank you!

LD47 was a very special one for me! A quick wrap up

Thank you all for those who played and rated my game Terra Nova.

This time I was finally able to finish a proper entry after many years.

InGame.png

Ludum Dare 47 adventure

This was my 14th LD edition. I was hyped by the amazing Imphenzia's 10 min low poly challenge videos and decided to go for a low poly 3D game, using Blender + Unity, like my first Ludum Dare games back in 2012.

October 5th, 19:00 local time - Theme came and I find myself empty of ideas. Spent 1, 2 hours thinking and thinking and nothing. Just like the last 10 LD editions or so. This time, however, I promised to myself not to give up. You won't give up.

For many years I wanted to make a game about the Age of Discovery and the colonization period (one of my favourite games of all time is the Sid Meier's Colonization). As a last resort, I decided to see how I could fit the LD47 theme in the colonization era.

With already 3 or 4 hours into competition time, finally came the idea of a non stop trade route loop, ships traveling the Atlantic from Europe to Americas, Africa and back. Open Blender, Unity, Photoshop, I'm in!!!

It was really fun to work on this little project. Ended with a nice strategy/sim game, a bit slow paced, with some UI/control problems but done nevertheless.

Terra Nova - "New Land" in Portuguese, a humble tribute to my country's Motherland 😁.

I just finished the post compo version with some improvements guided by the feedback given here.

Before it ends

I'm on my way to play and rate 100 games, including written feedback. I will try to then publish a top 10, I'm focusing on those games not receiving enough views.

Thank you all and see you in LD48!

Puzzles + Retro + Narrative = Happiness

Tempus Locus is a game where you solve puzzles using the past. This is a quick retrospective reflecting on what went well and what didn't.

3a318.png

What went well

  • I spent a lot of time searching for the perfect concept and almost wasted the first day.
  • I knew I wanted something about replaying the past, but wasn't sure how. So I prototyped the minimal controls for spawning a playback region (which would be useful for any of the ideas I had).
  • Just iterating on that first prototype was enough to allow cool puzzle ideas to emerge. Once I had 5 cool puzzles, I knew I can commit to that idea.
  • I didn't waste time on polish early in the process.
  • With the mechanic of controlling time, I knew I needed either a sci-fi or a fantasy setting, so I chose fantasy because my last GMTK2020 game was sci-fi.
  • I'm not an artist, but I used a lot of reference for this game, which made it one of my best looking ones. Just using color theory and complementary colors was enough to make a huge improvement in my style.

Example of colors used in the game: RloWOC.gif Example of reference used: d9ikcm1-26426a20-3ef5-449a-88a8-c134c4bff85f.gif

What didn't go well

  • The performance/FPS was not great on web for some people, which made the puzzling and the platforming almost impossible.
  • In puzzle games, I like it when the game is completely hands off and lets you discover the mechanic for yourself, which is what I did. Some people liked that, but some didn't find the mechanic easy to discover.
  • Puzzle + narrative is my comfort zone. It felt like I was cheating when I resorted to that.
  • The story felt flat to some people, especially because I invested too much into one ending, and not the other. (Yes, the game has two endings!)
  • The bg music gets jittery if you play long enough, and I have no clue why.

A Different Kind of Playthrough

Figured I'd jump in on the "here's a playthrough of my game" bandwagon, except this is a guitar playthrough of the escape sequence from Rad Boar Rewind. Definitely some of the more difficult guitar work I've ever thrown into an LD entry, but I'm super happy with the results. Check out the video and then go play the game for yourself.
