Ludum Dare 47 October 2–5, 2020

Making TWITTER... for DWARVES! - LDJAM 47 Post-Mortem

Better late than never... I've finally got around to finish the edit of the devlog for my Ludum Dare 47 Compo entry Newster!

Trying to get that Youtube channel started has been taking a lot of dev time away. I enjoy editing these though, and they say to keep doing what you find fun, so here you go!

https://youtu.be/OGrVEIOr_NA

Would love to hear your thoughts on the format and any tips or advice would be grand!

Thanks again for making my first Ludum Dare a wonderful experience, I'll see you all at the next one!

Finally completed Ace of Rope post-jam version

So I made a western action game in which you can control the gallows' rope you're stuck in. Given the large feedback and good ratings, I spent the last two months adding stuff to turn it into a complete game.

After more than 8 years of game development, I've never managed to finish a game of this scope before, so it's very satisfying! The year 2020 has kind of been the Year of Finishing Games for me, and game jams helped a lot. So thank you, whether you host jams, review or even just play games!

You can play the game here.

Hoptok Turn-based Game Jam

V3nZpp.png

Hiya, we're currently running a turn-based Hoptok game jam (Itch.io) that ends next weekend!

Only tech requirement is the game has to be able to run in the browser (can be Unity WebGL, phaser, html + css, etc). Top 3 games win USD$50 :]

We only have 10 people registered at the moment, so if you submit something there is a good chance you'll win a prize :P

Playing the Actual Top 10 Games

Hello guys, about 2 months before I made my own top picks from the LD47. This is to make ammends and review the actual winners which I have not played before lol! thanks :) https://youtu.be/aOdKF_7AuOk

Fluffensnuff has grown up - My first game after 18 years

and changed its name to a more poetic communityemgroupimage/em444x208.png

A year after my wife and i made this sokoban-like puzzle game for Ludum Dare 44, we decided to make it our first release, as it was very well received and the scope seemed really doable. During this year, i gathered some statistics from the high score list - we had nearly 2000 players with a combined playtime of over 200 hours. This isn't much for a "proper" game, but for our little LD entry it was incredible and made us very happy.

What really feels strange to me is, that i've been making games for 18 years and have never released a paid game in that time. This one will be the first and i can only wonder what took me so long :D

We went from 17 levels to over 100 with many new mechanics. We also redesigned the graphics completely, over some different styles (this would deserve its own post).

We also included the level editor, with which i built all the levels. Players can build levels easily ingame, and publish them or just play the levels made by other people.

It was a really interesting experience, and also showed us how much work it can be, despite the 72hr game being quite solid (for our past selves, at least). Of course we learned a lot too, and i especially value the experience made with freelancers on fiverr for the future.

Today we published the steam page, very exciting times for us: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1409180/OfMiceand_Moggies/

PS: does anyone recognize this? (big fans!) :D titlescreen.png

Devlog for my post jam game!

Hi, it has been a long time I have come here. But, I have made a devlog of my post jam version of my LD game Looped. I am fixing all the problem with it and also making changes according to the feedback. Here is the devlog: https://leo-red.itch.io/looped/devlog/201564/looped-v12-in-the-making

(I didn't write the whole devlog here as it is very long for me and the changes are not massive ;) )

Did my indie game breakeven? 7 years & 6 platforms of sales data!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkkJty-fNY4

Hello Ludum Dare community!

I've just popped on today to share with you a new video I've put together detailing the sales numbers from my debut game Toast Time. Platform sales data include Steam, iOS, Android, Humble Bundle (if that counts) and Nintendo Switch! All that top-secret stuff that devs keep to themselves? I'm sharing it.

Happy to answer any questions you have, here or there. Whether that's regarding sales, marketing, pr beats, etc., or any details I might have missed, or even about my Discord "Coverage Bot" that I run too.

Bye bye for now! xx

Phil Alone: Game Updates and French Version

Hey everyone, it's been a while and we are in the end of 2020... I don't about you guys but this wasn't the best year for me, but I grew a lot as a Game Developer thanks to this year and as a present for everyone that is playing Phil Alone, I decided to upgrade the game a little more, let's see the new updates?!

Graphics updates - So, I decided to remove every image of the game that had a black background, because it was just too simple. I decided to add something different: All the black screens like the credits, the pc tasks and the days are like a old fashion screen of a PC. This was added in all the versions of the game. Here is a before and after for you guys to compare:

BEFORE PC tasks.png AFTER PC tasks new.png

New credits - The credits are now with the name of the person that translated the game and the language. New Title Screen - So, I decided to change the title screen to something more simple but more different and that connects with everything else. New Icon - Phil Alone has a new Icon when you open the game if you download a different version! French Version - Phil Alone is now translated to French thanks to Elhijei! Guys, I hope you enjoy the new versions of the game and please leave a feedback for me to see it what you thought about the game!

If you want to help me develop more of Phil Alone, please send me a donation by the itch.io website, I would be gladly accepting it: This money will be used to put Phil Alone on the Steam page, so my goal is only 100,00 $USD. Even if the game goes to Steam, it will be completely free for you guys to download it and play there, it's just a way to more people know about the game!

And to finish this devlog... I am looking for translators, if you want to be a part of this game, please send me a message and let's make it happen! (I think the next languages that Phil Alone will have translation are Malay and Spanish!)

Semiautomatic

Those of you who played the smash hit Star Crossed (1,548th overall) during LD47 may remember the short story introducing the game. Instead of developing the game we chose to develop the story. It's now an 18-page children's book inspired by Plato's dialogue Meno.

The Wait For Ludum Dare 48

(I made that title up on the spot and it's actually pretty catchy.)

All right, that guy who posts random things is back! This time I'm talking about waiting another few months for Ludum Dare 48, and how I'm getting ready.

Prepping For Gamedev

This Ludum Dare I was fully unprepared and had no idea how bad it is to not have enough time. Only working on stuff for a few hours over the three days results in a short game with barely any audio and a sloppy walking animation. (Seriously, I spent probably no more than 10 minutes drawing all of the player's animations.) This results example was oddly specific, I wonder if it could be referring to this Ludum Dare's game Outside The Loop. 😉

So, I want to do something a bit longer and better for LD48. (Not saying this past Ludum Dare's game was awful... but it sure wasn't the best of LD47.) This consists of trying out team gamedev, use of different softwares and techniques, and just overall making sure I remember to keep my schedule clear around Ludum Dare.

Getting Ready For The Gaming!

My "Following" list just keeps getting bigger and bigger... I would include a nice simple gif of me scrolling through my "Following" list, but the gif would be hours long. (😜 Not really... but it is a pretty long list of people who I want to see make games in LD48.)

Keeping The Community Entertained

Because it turns out that the LD gamedev community is still going strong months after a jam! So I've been posting a bit of random assorted posts, everything from almost useless posts to my completely normal posts such as Game Spotlight and Game Sketches. (The second one needs work... 😅. Don't worry everyone, next jam the sketches won't look so sloppy.) And of course, we can't forget this post! (Hard for me, since I'm typing this. And this. And this...)

And To Wrap It All Up...

...Dear reader, how do you get ready for Ludum Dares? Feel free to share your techniques in the comments!

iLoop game on Google Play Store
