Ludum Dare 46 April 17–20, 2020

In China, a group of people made a game in the past 20 days

Back in January, I was helping my mum making dumplings for the dinner of Chinese lunar new year. Suddenly I received a call from my friend, he told me Wuhan was in quarantine procedure and military forces just took control of train stations and airports. All public transportation systems were shut down. He then sent me a video clip captured at the train station of Wuhan. In the video I saw those soldiers all equipped with advanced masks and facial protections as if they were came out from some zombie movies. My mum panicked, she turned on the TV. The television was broadcasting special show to celebrate lunar new year. Couple of minutes later, the breaking news interrupted the show and confirmed what my friend told me. At the same time, my mum asked me to rush to the Walmart and buy some food - as much as I could carry. The first medical team aiding Hubei province set off at the midnight of New Year’s Eve - it was the most important day in Chinese culture and they were supposed to be united and celebrate with their families. In the following days, over 20,000 doctors, nurses, scientists and military personnels were mobilized to reinforce the medical system in Hubei province. They are called “逆行者” by Chinese media and netizens.

The name of this game I’m gonna talk about is called “逆行者” as well. In Chinese, this word generally means the ones who travel on the wrong side of the road. When everyone was trying to escape from the hot zone, they volunteered to go in there, and to save lives.

The game is completely free, made by a team of 60 developers across China. The founder of this game post his idea and thoughts online, and soon got hundreds of responses. Eventually they picked 60 people to form a temporary online dev team and decided to create a game to express the gratitude to the medical personnels, volunteers and international communities for the selflessness help they provided. Although online developing caused them more trouble since they cannot see and talk to each other face to face, they finished the game in 20 days. Gameplay is basically like Florence, a interactive story-telling game, but contains several stories which truly happened in China, both good or evil. It's not a well-polished game, but it's till worth trying. The game is currenlty not online, but a demo version is released. I don't know if the game has multi language support now, after all the devs made it for free.

Now the situation in China is getting better every single day. Serveral medical teams completed their missions and returned to their home town (and of course they cannot go home until a 14-day quarantine). We resumed daily work and schools are prepared to open in April. It's a huge victory, so we are totally confident that the rest of the world will soon defeat the virus.

We are truly thankful for the help from other contries, and we are willing to offer help to other countries if possible. There's no hero coming from the sky, there are only “逆行者”s who do not fear death and are willing to defend us with thier lives.

Ludum Dare 46

so, I decided to enter the Ludum Dare 46. this is my first time, before this I have only tweaked around with the FPS Microgame in Unity and some failed side-projects. Wish me luck! ;)

We are in

This will be my fourth LD. This time though I will be teaming up with @ladymistleaf. She will be doing most of the designing and art. I will stick to programming. @mrjoshuamclean will be making music for the game like he did for my last 2 entries.

first one inspired by finding out about the unreleased game skateBIRD, which i REALLY wanna play lmao

second was just a general Hope Theme to combat the inevitable dark ones that'll pop up due to quarantine

third one was actually my bf's suggestion, i liked it better than my original third suggestion so I swapped 'em out

i'm really excited for this game jam! i think this time i'm ready for it emotionally, and I'm like, impatient for the theme slaughter round tbh!!

Since everyone else is doing it...

I wasn't going to share my theme suggestions, just because I thought they were kind of dumb, but it seems to be the thing to do, so here they are I guess.

The second one is literally just because I've been listening to Wicked a lot and it's not as bad as the second suggestion I had before.

Theme One, Theme Two, Theme Red. Theme your not allowed four themes.

Hopefully this year one of mine makes it to be the actual theme for the jam so I can understand what it must be like to be the only person who doesn't think the theme is bad. I also hope everybody who suggest themes is ready to join me in the trenches of rating every theme so that we can crush the floating islands dream together once and for all.

Any art/sound people want to team up?

I'm a programmer who used to work in Unity but do everything in Godot now. I have pretty solid experience coding for RPG systems and the like, less so in physics type things, and am looking for someone to cover art and or sound for this dare. I'm Hueson#7602 on discord, you can hit me up there or here if you want to talk more.

Hi everyone, I'm in

It will be my second LD, and this time I plan to go for 2D graphics and will try to create it myself. Can't wait for it to strat, it really motivates me) I wish everyone to have some free time that weekend! Also here are my theme suggestions:

It's that time again! My suggestions never seem to make it past the first cut, but, we'll see what happens! I prefer themes that leave plenty of room for interpretation. Lol.
