LD22 December 16–19, 2011

The Love Letter is unlocked!

We finally declared The Love Letter to be as finished as it will ever be, and I just lifted the site-lock from it this evening. :) Anyone can host the game on their site now.

You can download the game pack here:

http://cdn.mochiads.com/c/g/the-love-letter.zip

Not only was the game featured on the front page of Newgrounds, but Kongregate just gave it a badge and The Love Letter is now featured on the front page of Kongregate too! :o None of my other games have ever gotten this much attention, so I’m pretty excited. :)

It’s also been reviewed on Jay is Games, and recommended by Egoraptor (and I’ll pretend that I knew who that was before this…). ;)

Seven-Day Roguelike Challenge 2012 (March 10–18)

Every year, there’s a challenge to make a fully-functioning, playable roguelike game in seven days. For more information about this year’s Seven-Day Roguelike (7DRL) Challenge, you can check out “7DRL Contest 2012” at RogueBasin.

And check out the community blog, too!

The 7DRL Contest isn’t organisationally related to Ludum Dare in any way, but I thought you folks might be interested. ;-)

Mini-LD #33 Is Coming…

Sorry that I’m a bit slow in posting this, folks. But… here it is…

Mini-LD 33 Presentation

That’s right! Doodles! 😀

You can theme your game after doodles in general, but the theme is meant to be in the way you get the idea for your game.

Before you begin your game, you must make a doodle. You can make the doodle before the Mini-LD begins if you want to. The important thing is to make the doodle before the game.

When you begin your game, make a post that includes the doodle. If it’s a digital image, insert it. If it’s a drawing on paper, scan it or even take a photo, then insert it. The important thing is to see the doodle.

You will then make your game based on your doodle.

On the submission page, I’d like to ask that you folks put your doodle in the screenshot section to show others what your idea looked like as a drawing.

The jam will run from March 17 at midnight GMT to March 24 at midnight GMT. However, if you can’t make it during that time, submissions will be up from the 20th all the way until the end of the month. You can start your game outside of the Mini-LD time, but if you decide to do that then post your start and end times when you announce your entry.

Ludum Dare 23 meet up in Göteborg, Sweden

Hi all!

We’ve just decided that we ( Free Lunch Design ) will try to host an LD meet up during LD23! Join us at our office to jam, solo, or just hang out! Located in central Göteborg close to Järntorget we offer nice people, great restaurants, and lots of fun! Can’t promise we’ll be open 24/7, but we’ll try!

Although our offices are spacious, we do have a limited number of seats so I cannot promise that everybody can come. But if you’re interested, drop me a line on @johanpeitz .

I’ll be back with more details as the date closes in. See you then!

MiniLD33# Doodle

here is my doodle for next week. drew it in Paint.net. i already have a basic concept for the game.

Couple of questions about LD

Hi,

I’ve recently been interested in taking part in the upcoming LD#23 but I was wondering if we can choose any platform we wish.

I’m a bit of an amateur GBA programmer and have been working to build a small library and tool set for use with another upcoming GameJam  but was wondering If im free to use it for LD#23.

I would be using lbigba from devkit pro so its a homebrew library for the GBA.

Also for the GBA I’ve been building a function library and memory definition library which has not been complied into a library and is just raw c and h file would this still be fine to use?

If not I can jump back into XNA.

Thanks

Dakota

It is going to be really hard on Judges if you can only play your game on Game Boy Advance.

It might work out if you could package the game with an emulator, and make it easy to install and remove the whole package. But you would need to ensure that you had permission to distribute the emulator with your game. I’m not really familiar with the licenses of popular GBA emulators, but you could do some research.

Do whatever lets you make the game you want, AND lets other people play it.

VBA-M is under GUN licensing so i’m sure I can just put a copy in with the final build also VBA is inactive atm and i would presume under the same license.

As a guideline: make it as easy as possible for people to play your game.

Ok that’s not a problem either. It compiles to a .gba so all you would need to do is drop and drag it into the emulator. Also to compile the source may be a little harder but is still fairly basic.

Remember LD22 – Pick a better theme!

Those of you who were here last time around remember the struggle over “Kittens” – and the subsequent election of “Alone”.  From what I heard, nobody really liked “Alone” much.  So remember: democracy is a dangerous privilege, use it wisely!  Don’t pick a theme you don’t want and consider all your choices carefully!

Doodle Dare

This is my initial doodle, made in english class, where we talked about Prince Charles’ aversion to modern architecture.

I then came up with the following concept. I’m not shure yet if I will use it.

I want to use this MiniLd to finally overcome my dependence on Game Maker and become familiar with Processing.

Vincent’s Doodle for MiniLD #33

Hi, my name is Vincent and this is my first LD.

Here is my Doodle:

Yeah, it looks like a network of things. This is what came up when not thinking about anything. :-)

Let’s see what cool game will come out of it!

Mini LD #33

Okay, I’ve got my doodle, lets hope things turn out the way I plan…

Yeah, I’ve decided to draw balloons. This should be good.

That's right. Balloons. Whoo.

MiniLD #33 Doodle

Well, I’m in. Here’s my doodle:

I’ve got a basic idea for a game. It may even involve hexes!

Orange Jelly. Chocolate Sponge. And… Trifle?

Mini-LD #33 – Going for the random

So, just for the sake of getting all out of it, I randomly asked the IRC if I should use Cpp or Python/PyGame

The decision fell onto Python.

This means, it’s gonna be quite a challenge. I know some Python and also got a bit of PyGame under my belt, but let’s see how well I actually know this stuff :)

So, there we go!

I thought you were going to use C++, so that you have some experience come April? :)

Colonizer Doodle

Here’s my doodle for my mini-ld game, colonizer, the doodle shows very little about the game other than trade goods.  Originally I had some kind of tactical sailing warfare thing, which I promptly abandoned.

Interesting. My first instinct was to draw hexagons too. Mine is turning out to be a war game though. Good luck!
