LD22 December 16–19, 2011

Day 1’s progress

I can’t say I was enthralled by this compo’s theme, Alone, all that much. It took some head pounding to come up with an idea, and even though I’ve somewhat settled on one, the details are still sketchy. Regardless, I started working once I had my setting: Space. I mean, how much more alone can you get than in the final frontier?

Admittedly a bad policy, but I hate to work with placeholder graphics for long. The first thing I set out on was my space man. There were a few iterations before I settled on my “final” (All graphics will be tweaked to no end, of course) design.

After I’d gotten that out of the way, I got down to a bit of real coding. My game would need a halfway decent 2D camera, so I set out to Google for this one. David Amador’s 2d camera worked like a charm (found here http://www.david-amador.com/2009/10/xna-camera-2d-with-zoom-and-rotation/) and that was a simple step. Problem was, I could hardly tell I was moving. I threw together some random noise stars, made a few tiles, and set up a random tile selector. It was functional, but lacked flair. That’s on my to-do list.

Movement felt stiff though, so I worked on some floatier movement to better fit the space setting.

Now, any good space man needs a shuttle, so that was my next stop. I had a placeholder, but again that nagging for a good looking place holder bugged me until I put some work in to it. It still lacks flair, but much like my backgrounds, can wait for later. I threw on some broken pieces for the forthcoming gameplay, and was ready to call it a night. Here’s a screenshot that shows my progress thus far:

http://i.imgur.com/sE0Vk.png (I didn’t want to embed the image, it gets all stretchy and nasty :/ )

Honestly, I can recognize that my order of work is a little backwards. I don’t even know if I’ll like my game yet, but I’m already working on assets. I feel like this is going to leave me with overall weaker gameplay, but I have a hard time imagining where my game is going when I’m looking at squares. LD is supposed to be a learning experience though, and I feel like I’m learning a lot about the way I work. It’s not a pretty lesson though.

I’ve got a to-do list for tomorrow, so for now I’ll catch a few hours. Night, LD.

Eternal Lonelyness piccy no.1!

So I’ve knocked up a quick landscape for which some action to happen, not even great but throwing in some stock T3D/AFX textures and skys, bit of sculpting.

Most of the time was getting the sea portion right, the player starts inthe sea and progressing onto land.

Need to read up on T3D ground cover as I managed to do nothing with it for 5 minues + I need to go hunt from some stock textures and/or create some!

WIP whilst making the beach
Think I might need to break out the art package (oh noes!) and get some tentacle goodness in there. 3DCoat I think should do that quite well. Though I might leave animation for another hour…

Fly Away Home!

Introducing my LD game: Fly Away Home!

Poor old <insert bird> has been left by his flock! He must fly across various stages dodging all sorts of sky hazards that don’t otherwise normally exist, in an attempt to reunite with his flock!

How cliché.

Anyway, if I have time, I might add some minor stat elements like control, stamina, etc.

Screenshot:

I feel sorry for the clouds and birds, the art looks pitiful...

I think I’ll tighten up the resolution first, it seems a bit ungodly big. Also all the art is a placeholder till my artist wakes up…

I’m pretty happy how this is coming along, it’s not too stressful and I’m having fun. I learnt some math too.

Anyway, gotta keep codin’.

Time for an update!

So this is what I have been up to. I have made great progress, I have done far more in this time than I thought I would.

I have a cool suprise idea if I have the time to do tomorrow but for now I have all the character controllers in place and the GUI is pretty much done.

Anyways see ya later!

Central story type campaign descisions

After considering essentially making a more graphically sophisticated version of Pong, but playing tenis against a wall, in much the exact same way I was forced to do in school, we have decided on being “inspired” by two things

  • the Modron dungeon in PS:Torment.
  • the Cure song “a Forest”

It should be pretty obvious, if you’re familiar with either of those things, what we’re going to do. Probably as a side scroller, because we’re boring.

Maybe we’ll have a sort of “time limit” in that you can literally starve/bleed (via DOT) while searching. We’re unlikely to win any “fun” categories! But it’s not about the winning, it’s about the learning and the creation of something frustrating and depressing!

Lunchtime report!

Finally got my idea! Wrote some notes, only to be interrupted by puppy peeing on the carpet.

Yeah, work on that bone instead, puppy.

I decided before the compo started that I’d do a VN, no matter what. So ‘alone’ is not the greatest theme for that sort of game…. which just means it’s MORE fun! I’ve got a kind of room plan now, so I’m going to draw as many as I can, and start linking them up and putting stuff in them.

I’ve got the feeling that this game is too big. But it’s more because there’s lots of art, and less because there’s lots of writing. Well, let’s see what happens!

Done for the night

Well I spent like 7 hours working on my project and decided I wanted to do something a little more simple for a bit.  And thus Jim just wants to be alone, was born!  Not bad for 3ish hours lol (even if a lot of that was playin… err debugging it).  Why I decided to make 2 games idk lol, but hay it’s fun just the same.  Oh and quick question if anyone knows.  Am I allowed to use free royalty free songs/sounds in my games?

For the comp you need to have made it yourself, but for the jam anything you have the legal right to use is okay.

Om nom nom, muffins

Yay, muffins … and other stuff.

I would post a pic of these delicious chocolate muffins, but… They’re mine to see, not yours! 😀

Motivation- I needs its.

I have got to the stage where I have some of the base game down, but its not yet playable. This seems to me as the trickiest bit of the day.

LD22 Cat Vend Update

I have a ton of the control code and the actual vend machine digital outline done, the big obstacle is drawing in the cable for the vend claw in the right position on the sprite.

I’ll never finish in time !

I will never finish in time…

But I have done some neat job, and learned a lot so far.

Here is what’s done :

Level, blocks, moving water, collisions system

And some graphics for the player :

I’ts odd drawing but I wasn’t expecting more. ^^

EDIT : Some neat kick !

First Preview

Here is my first preview of my game. On this preview you can move around and there’s the light system implemented.

Here’s the original idea, basically it’s about dragging your companion’s dead body back home from a very unlucky expedition.

Play it here: Rolpege LD22 (Alone) – Preview 1

You control the character with arrow keys / WASD / ZQSD / ,AOE

(light fixed)

I think you need to have at least a little light shining behind the character, at the moment the fact that turning around totally changes what you can see is a little annoying. Might work out nicely in the final thing though…

Another thing with the lighting is that you can see what you are standing on, wich makes platforming a bit harder.

Oh thank you :)

sadness

My brother was stayed up late just to tell me the theme on phone: Alone. Now that is a theme I have nothing to do with. I love to be alone. I’m just doing my stuff and nobody disturbs me. But this isn’t a good start for a game. So I went sleep, maybe dreams will be some help.

Woke up at 10 am to a phone call. My boss sad the Acustic  Analyzer most be working on next week. But I’m not here next week. So I needed to come back to work to reinstall windows. Install NIDAQ and the analyzing software… This thing isn’t working for 3 years now. And I dubt anyone saw it working here. No one knows anything about it and its german. GERMAN!? That isn’t a human language!! Who understands that s***?

So I came back to work today in the rain and all my clothes are drying home becouse I washed them out yesterday. So basically I’m in my pajamas… now wet pajamas… Nothing Is packed yet, cleaning is in half and I need to go to my relatives tonight.

And if this isn’t enought the only WinXP CD I could get today is giving me a blue screen after start up…

And I can’t come up with anything to the theme… I’m so sad now.

Edit: actually I’m leaving this s*** here. Im in wet pajamas in a cold office for 3 hours now. I’m freezin’. That’s it I’m going home.

Fear not, as I have studied this ancient tongue well! The theme, however, is really annoying :(

Day 1

Well I’ve made some somewhat good progress today, I’ve got the basics down, a little art, etc. I’m doing a side-scrolling platformer, largely because I’m so familiar with them thanks to working on Illusive Dreams for quite a while. It’s a bit ambitious but I should be able to get more hours in this time around. I still have no idea what the story/theme will be, but I’m sure that will come; all I know is that it’s something to do the player being alone.

7 hours of work.

Message system is up and running. Supports multiple messages, and adjusts size based on how many lines of text is in each message.

Next up? Time to start tackling the inventory system I think!
