Off to a bad start

It’s been 10 hours since the LD22 started and I still haven’t started coding mechanics. I just decided on what “type of game” it will be, so finally I’m able to get cracking. I’m still basing my game on the framework from an old game, and I figured I’d take more stuff from that, than only cmake-files. Nothing much, just menu functionality and main loop. The rest I will start coding now!

I haven’t shared that code on this page, but it’s accessible at sourceforge, or more specifically https://subspacebattle.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/subspacebattle. I hope you’ll see that very little is taken from there, and that it’s ok.

It feels bad that I haven’t got anything up and running yet, but the basics is: top-down “shooter”, but hopefully with a twist. Time to get crackin’!

Alone completely blindsided me…

that was the one theme that I thought, “there’s no way anyone is going to vote for such a lame theme.”

well, shit.

Don’t be sad,

Hehe same for me. It really was a theme which didn’t really give me an idea. Not like “kittens”.

First Build

well, here is my first build.. only technical stuff, no story and so on

If you find some bugs (there are enough) please tell them in the comments

First Build

Soliloquy – First Test

Day 1 feels like it’s already over, but I have a few more hours. I wasn’t very productive, because I don’t like the theme and it didn’t inspire me. But at least I have some kind of idea now, and did a first test:

You play two souls at the same time which have to find each other by synchronizing. You can play the first test here, it’s Unity3D.

Eating cheap spaghetti right now. FYI.

I Need Someone

I’ve decided to call my game I Need Someone, and it’s fitting given the theme and plot. I’m making great progress, with many thanks to the people who have helped me when I’ve asked questions. For a first attempt at Ludum Dare, it’s going very well. :)

So my game is going to be a first person adventure game, with collecting and fighting. I’m not quite sure yet what the enemies are going to be like, given that I don’t have much time to make them. (Feel free to leave suggestions in the comments :) ) but I do know that there are going to be a few different environment types, and two (possibly three) maps. It’s going to be black and white to make up for my lack of artistic ability, so we’ll see how well that works out.

Here are some screenshots so far:

Cirque du Seul

A circus-raised polar bear is thrust into the lonely world of freedom… AS3 & Flixel, Photoshop, Audiotool.com for music.

Planning mostly finished!

Unfortunately, it’s on paper and I don’t have a scanner, but…

This game is looking to perhaps be my shortest most unambitious project yet, which gives it a damn good chance of reaching polish levels far more quickly. It’s probably going to take five minutes to play, but that was true of Throwbots and it was still at least an entertaining five minutes (or so I heard, anyway).

It all dwells on being trapped in a facility and depending on a very, very finite resource with an unlimited amount of things that drain this resource.

Unfortunately, this resource is basically the player character’s lifeforce. And once it’s gone, that’s it. Game over.

It might work, it might not. Onto prototyping the mechanics!

10 Hours In…

Ludum Dare started at 8pm in my time, and it is now 6:10am. We’ve been working pretty diligently at this and have gotten a lot accomplished. We have our overall game idea fleshed out along with somewhat of a story. We have most of our gameplay figured out as well. It just comes down to getting it done in time. We’ve made excellent progress thus far though. I, for one, am getting a little better with Graphics Gale (even though I still suck). I’m horrible at pixel art, but I’m working on it. Here are some more screen shots of us working tonight:

And…

Some art!

We’ll be going to bed soon. Gonna get some sleep to refuel our batteries. But, for now, we still work.

GLHFTK!

A plan begins to emerge.

After one hour of brainstorming and seven hours of sleep last night, I still haven’t decided on the theme yet. My brainstorming progress so far:

Interpretations of “alone”:

  • isolated: want to be alone, but somehow isn’t
  • isolated: is alone, but doesn’t want to
  • “leave me alone”
  • solitary: love story (blergh)
  • alone as in exclusive
  • alone as in unique
I really dislike the theme. It may sound “deep” and indie as fuck as first, but the problem is how to derive any sort of conflict from it. Nonetheless, I have 5 outlines:
  1. Paparazzi
    • Conflict: You want to be on your own, but others won’t let you
    • Mechanic: Beat em up
  2. The last/first Zombie
    • Conflict: You are the last/first of your kind.
    • Mechanic: Sneaking game/tactics. Go infect people, but don’t be seen.
  3. Cameras/Big Brother
    • Conflict: You want to have some personal space
    • Mechanic: Platformer, doge cameras
  4. Water World
    • Conflict: You are Kevin Costner. You are alone.
    • Mechanic: A Shooter or something.
  5. Lonely Island
    • Conflict: You are stranded.
    • Mechanic: Build stuff. Get noticed. Don’t die.

I think I’ll go with the last one, but I fear it might be too complex. Especially since I suck at graphics. But oh well… You can always add kittens.

5 seems pretty cool, I really like surviving on island 😛

Hmm,

Won’t lie, I’m finding this theme pretty tough :/

I figured a nights sleep may provide some inspiration. I’ve brainstormed a few ideas, whiped up a few bits of pixel art and pieced together a basic isometric engine.

(So lonely)

I’m still not sure what I’m going to make (not terribly keen on any of my ideas so far) but I had to do something.

Right now it looks like it may be an rpg/visual novel, though I seriously doubt I could complete such a thing in the timefame.

Welp, back to work!

Dexter

Another Milestone!

Wow! 7 hours of programming passed so fast!

Here is a new screenshot of my game so far:

I managed to:

  • Add a background
  • Making the items limited
  • Adding a trampoline! (yay)

I’m planning to :

  • Make some real graphics
  • Create some more levels
  • Maybe create another item

Game planning complete

I have now fleshed out the entire game, with an idea of each of the characters and their goals and why, the playfield/planet, the way they move and conquer, and the way they win.

I’m unsure on balance just yet.  I do know the Aliens have the toughest time winning, but they also have unlimited troops.  Unsure on the virus yet, baby and doctor are probably just fine.

Rules are done, but not in code.

Time to figure out how to translate design to code (:

also scenesat is getting annoying this morning, seems to be a load of anti-get-stuff-done crap and I’m moving away from it to something more condusive to work. I don’t have time to make a playlist anyeay. Plus I’m not really sure exactly WHAT it is that is causing me to dislike these tunes, other than the lame YT Cracker crap – I just need ambient drone I think.

Squido does not like being alone

This is my progress so far. The game is about Squido and his search for friendship. Squido is a pretty decent guy and all so he makes friends with other individuals really fast, but maintaining all the relations with his friends is a bit harder. It’s your job to ensure Squido is never alone!

I’m (belatedly) in!

I’ve been so busy I forgot to actually post an ‘I’m in post’, so here it is. Tech of choice will be my usual combo of Java + LWJGL + SPGL.

Alone, huh? That’s a tricky one. I have a few ideas, unfortunately they’re all huge and far too content heavy. I may just try one anyway and see how far I can get.

I suspect we’ll be seeing a lot of minecraft inspired survival type games this time around…

Here’s a shot of my current WIP. The engine is what’s taking the most time so far.

Need to fill the room with props but…I’m not an artist! It’s taking ages just to do graphics, so I’m going to work on the world itself a bit more.

Will add sounds next!

Stay insane

If you’re blind and can’t see the image, I’ll just describe it for you: lots of rectangles, lasers, and a blue redrawable “isolation tank” that blocks said lasers, lets you stand on it, and informs me that Pygame’s built-in cheap collision detection only checks the corners of rectangles.
