I was wandering on floating islands’s proceedings

Heya :)

I added a digging system and a treasure generation system :)

I have to finish the game in a bit ’cause tomorrow I have a plane to catch 😀

Here is a screen

I hope you like this :)

In the next post I’ll release the executable, so please give feedback :)

Byez,

Mark

Moar Progress!

woo particles!

I also finally figured out my gameplay mechanic!

Dinner Day 1

Dinner 😀 Health is of no concern over Ludum Dare, that’d be boring, right? Ribs and rice are nice anyway.

LD22 Meal Time

Pancakes, Fried Eggs, and Chourico.

It’s ok to be jelly, I would be.

Lunch time.

I fixed some bugs in my jump/animation code that I wrote last night, and added some camera zooming/panning zones that seem like they’ll be pretty necessary for the vibe and gameplay.  I thought I had my light baking atlas work figured out for a decent workflow that wouldn’t result in hours-long bakes before release, but I was wrong and I’ll need to figure that out after lunch :'(.  Still though, I’ve added animations, fun feeling movement, a smooth panning camera and the all important player shadow dot since last time I posted.  Feeling good.

I plan to use some of Artist of the Fortnight‘s sweet CC tunes in my game. (oops, rules.  Maybe after the compo!)  I worked with him on Subatomic Kangaroo and was thrilled to see that most of his music is CC and thereby usable in the LD compo.

Unless the rules have changed recently, I’m pretty sure you can’t use that music in Compo entries. It’s fine for Jam entries, though.

WBE first screenshot..

This is 70% mockup – everything’s rendered through opengl and most (if not all) art is loaded as textures, just the whole game is missing. I’ve worked on this one for about 1.5 hours now, and if I’m lucky I’ll have another 2.5 hours left. Not feeling too motivated at the moment, but we’ll see.

Update #3 – Sparkles! ☆FABULOUS~☆

Ok, so I’ve taken a big break today but got back to work and it turned out ☆FABULOUS~☆

I’m damn pleased with how today has gone. Much better then I expected for sure.

As per, get the runnable examples below.

Windorz – here!

Mac! – here!

Not a big fan of the theme.

I’m gonna be honest I’m not really a fan of the alone theme. The biggest problem is that it’s kind of shallow, and while it’s open to interpretation there isn’t much to interpret. Looking over some of the games, I’ve come across quite a few that are extremely similar to one another. In a lot of cases the theme turned out to be more Survival then alone. Because if you’re alone what do you have left to do but survive? Maybe I’m just a bit frustrated because I can’t come up with any unique gameplay mechanics that would fit in with this theme. Or maybe I’m barking a bit of truth. What do the rest of you think?

I agree. I would have liked something more free. A graphical/story theme which doesn’t restrict gameplay. Like electronics, you can make any game in the world have electronics as a theme. The Alone theme just brings about all these dark/sad games which otherwise might play out the same but at least have an up-beat tempo and nice sparkly graphics.

Yeah, this theme completely restricts the gameplay’s mechanics in certain situations.

Just because the theme is ‘Alone’, doesn’t mean the game has to have a single character. The character could be currently alone but looking for someone, or a loner, shunning other people. The game could be about how it’s difficult to do things on your own until you team up with someone near the end (be it a scripted AI thing or a second player). Going with a comedy adventure game, the story could be about trying to prevent being alone, only for enemies that are in the same situation getting in your way. You could even go the opposite way and have a character that wishes they were alone, but aren’t. It doesn’t necessarily have to be about a character being alone either. It could be about there being a unique mcguffin or something.

progress

little behind, but I got some stuff…

(The stick person is a placeholder) I’m not 100% sure where this is going, but I find that that’s the best way to do things sometimes. What I do know is that this fucker is alone.

If I had the time, I would totally make this game with smooth anti-alias lines. Maybe later? At the moment I am calling it ‘Solitaire°

Late “starter”

Got some basecode (js/webGL) that i started on before the theme was announced so i’m putting it up at http://www.jlim.se/ld48/ld22base.zip and i’ll probably also adapt the collision and integration code from my previous compo entries at http://www.jlim.se/ld48/

Now i just need to figure out a game idea :)

Edit: an basecode addition, the animation system from http://whizzter.woorlic.org/mld29

At Least I Have A Plan?

Very impressed with all the work so far!  I’m even farther behind than I’d hoped, but that’s what happens when you have a plan for half the possible outcomes and something you never anticipated gets voted into your lap.  I wasn’t thrilled with the theme announcement (my “randomly generated” game featuring gun-toting vampires, predatory aliens, superintelligent cyborg bears, and a bandana-wearing killing machine named John Randbo would’ve been awesome, you jerks), and rather than diving into coding the first terrible idea I had, I dawdled, watched Notch tackle the problem with more ease than I could manage, irresponsibly spent a few hours accidentally brainstorming a great way for the writer and musician I’m trying to start a studio with to get their work noticed before learning some soulless capitalists had somehow retroactively stolen my idea, and justified eating dinner and sleeping by telling myself the best seed of an idea I had needed to germinate.  And it has germinated; whether I can put down the proper roots in only 24 hours remains dubious at best, but I’m prepared for a marathon coding session.  My working title is Omnicider – the idea is to turn the theme on its head and discard the notion that being alone is somehow a “bad” thing and make it the goal.  My protagonist is a mad scientist-type whose only desire is to be alone, even if he has to kill everyone else on the planet to get there!  Killbots, an orbital death platform, and shooting down pesky Earth-borne missiles with a particle cannon are the gameplay elements; part RTS, part Missile Command, all fun?  I may have to fall back to the Jam if things don’t proceed smoothly, but I’m not giving up until my failure is entirely obvious.

I’ve never been actively encouraged to generate anything resembling a food blog, so I produced a suitably epic vegan breakfast to start my coding session:

Clockwise from the top left, you’re looking at unsugared grapefruit with pineapple, off-brand Gloomios with thawed blueberries and soymilk, hot miso soup with potatoes, leeks, deep-fried tofu, wakame, and soba noodles, a large cup of home-roasted Sumatran coffee AKA “the strong stuff”, soymelet with steamed broccoli, fried mushrooms, and green onions, and margarined toast.  Hearty and perhaps a little extravagant, yes, but don’t ever let anyone tell you that vegans can’t be foodies.

LD #22 – Untitled Cave-Dwelling Adventure!

So, a few hours ago, I had an idea for a game where the player is trapped in a cave with nothing more than a flashlight. Being super dark, the play can only see what’s lit by the light.

I got a very simple, very basic prototype up and running, and I’m kinda loving it so far. I added some dust clouds and all of a sudden, it’s a bit creepy.

I may not have any real design or idea what I’m doing with this, but I don’t care. I’m having a blast with it.

You’re not alone

Thing start to work pretty nicely, but I’m running out of time and I’ve still load of stuff I want to add.

Anyway, the game is playable can be tested on my dropbox and here is a screenshoot :

Mid-Saturday Progress

So far today I have added a ship, mining to earn credits, and started working on upgrades for the ship.

Start of a new Day

Woke up about an hour ago, so I figured I should update this with what I’ve done so far.

But, all I’ve done is setup the inventory to the action system, and made it so item types have base actions that pop up when you select them. Not that much to really show yet.

I’ve decided I want to be able to equip one  item into your hand, so I’m going to add that in the options there too and I’ll make some room on the HUD to show what you are currently holding.

Zawa zawa

Okay, so I’ve got a somewhat unique and fitting idea, a scrolling map with no size restrictions, some clumsy graphics and level sketches, and the core mechanics are working. With code that actually seems to be from this planet.

Then why are you feeling anxious, Jiggawatt? Surely you’re better off than many other participants?

Well, here’s the thing: it just doesn’t feel right. The whole “isolation tank” mechanic needs more limitations and for it to be fun and even remotely challenging. Right now it’s really hard to think of gimmicks and situations where you can’t just brute force your way through. Which is bad, since I was aiming for this game to have puzzle elements. Time’s running out and I feel like I’ve only worked on little details lately.

Tiles!

Tiles!

I’ve hacked together a tile placement thing, so I can just draw my level’s tilemaps and save them to clipboard as strings. FlashPunk has done most of the hard work here, of course.

No more gameplay ideas

I can’t come up with anything to add to the game, so I created this “logo”:

And here are some screenshots from the game itself:

Progress

So I’ve decided to do a Bomb Defuse game using C and SDL w/ SDL_mixer, because SDL_image seems to be broken. I also recently learned that Defusal is not a word. Anyway, here are a couple of screenies!
