LD26

Well let’s see how this turns out…

Hello all.  We (and by that I mean me and my mate Khailmik) will be doing the game jam.  This is our first Ludum Dare.  This is our first Jam.  This is our first game.  And it appears to be traditional to have this sort of post.

Well to be technical I have made one other game before, but it was a pretty minimalistic platformer.  Digressing, we come from a background in media production, tv/radio… so this is all very new.  We don’t know exactly how it will go, but if luck comes together we will make something that one could rationalize is a game of sorts.  I shall be doing programming (if you could call it that) and sound.  Khailmik will be doing art and animation.

Tools and stuff!

Stencyl

Spine

Illustrator

Photoshop

Garageband

Logic Express

cfxr

and whatever else we deem necessary….  We hope to have some fun with this, and that everyone else does as well!

Now, I’m off to click the ‘Publish’ button… wish me luck.

NightCap (aka Drunk Hipster) Post-Mortem

Ludum Dare 26 Entry – NightCap.  That’s our game.  You can see it HERE<—  And by “see” I mean “Play” of course.

(originally posted on www.shuddahaddalottafun.com)

I sit, eyes focused on the once pristine white mac keyboard, now soiled by ramen noodle juice and finger smudges.

It’s hard to describe my feelings after this experience.  Perhaps I’m still too close, having yet sorted though all the data in my head.  I think an even balance of the pride and satisfaction creating what we did, and the disappointment with the things that didn’t make it, or just bugged out for whatever magical ‘the world is against me’ reasons caused the feeling I have.  But this is jumping the gun…  or shark… or shark guns… what about the beginning.

Our background is in video production, sketch comedy.  Video game development is an entirely new venture for us.   When it all boils down, Ludum Dare, although incredibly challenging was probably the best way for us to start.  It forced us to learn new programs, technics and theories for game dev that otherwise we would’ve been very slow to get into.  We started with the warm-up weekend, making a game about a penguin that throws corndogs (may very well be a WIP still).  On the Thursday before the Jam, we finally had a build where you could move the penguin and throw a corndog (with some minor bug issues including Infinite CornDog Syndrome).  The head hits the table.  How do we make a game in 72 hours?

Infinite Corndog Syndrome. yeah, it's my indie prog rock band. We're kinda huge in Europe.

Infinite CornDog Syndrome. yeah, it’s my indie prog rock band. We’re kinda huge in Europe.

Our start times are 9pm and 10pm, our team living on the east coast and the mid-west (US).  We started a skype with a third team member (Drew… Oh by the way, I’m Alex (programmer/music).  This is Mikhail(art).  Nice to meet you.) who we knew had a busy weekend ahead, so we wanted to make sure we got his involvement in the idea phase.  Eagerly we wait, shaking with anticipation of what creative juices would be… juiced… from the inspiring theme.  Refresh.  What’s the theme?  Minimalism… Minimalism?

… Shit.

Who’s idea was that!?  We were so excited about doing the LD, then the theme was announced, and we didn’t care anymore.  It just didn’t inspire us.

Side Note:  Before when I said video game development was an entirely new venture for us… I lied.  Well, slightly.  It is a new adventure for us, just not for me.  I’ve made one game before, and it was a minimalistic platformer made with GameSalad.  I chose to make it a minimalism style game from the beginning because I knew I didn’t have an artist, and I wanted to be able to say, “yea, no, it’s supposed to look like that.“ I didn’t want to do another minimalism game.

We started the Google image search, trying to find ideas and art that would inspire us, but not much luck there.  There was inspiration to be found in our skype meeting however.  You see one of us, and we won’t name names, apparently thought that the human body turned beer into oxygen, making it necessary to drink a lot of it.  So the idea started to get thrown around.  How about if you are drunk, and when you drink things become simpler and more minimalistic, making it easier to get around?

But we really didn’t know how we would go about doing that; it seemed complicated.  Moving on.  Idea after idea was pitched, but none of them were really games.  They were art styles, themes, but not gameplay ideas.  So we went back to the drinking idea.  Let’s do a bit of that…  then do a game.

Initial concept art. Step 1.

Initial concept art. Step 1.

After 4 hours, we had an idea and a plan to make it happen.

Saturday morning things seemed to go well, getting a temp character in, and the flow to change drunk stages.  But then it seemed like issue after issue.  Player spawned super high off the ground. Drinking animation wouldn’t play.  Player location wouldn’t stay correct between scenes.  But I’m sure all of this is common in game development, and this is the middle of the story anyway.  Who cares, what’s important is the beginning and the end, so I’ll skip to that.  The end… we already did the beginning…

blocking out the scene... tehe... get it?... cause they're blocksohnevermind...

blocking out the scene… tehe… get it?… cause they’re blocksohnevermind…

Sunday is done, we are at work on Monday, and there is still a lot to do.  I left a couple hours early from work to start doing music and sfx.  Luckily Drew was around and able to do the VO work.  By the late afternoon, we were pretty aware of what was and was not going to make it into the game.  After cutting out some art, a puzzle, we were ready to upload it to the web and call it a day.

I fink, I shuld drink summore...

I fink, I shuld drink summore…

Then we realized audio was missing.  It worked well in the engine, but when publishing the game, they disappeared.  I fiddled with it for about another hour without any idea what was wrong, and finally called it a day.  Go to bed.

In the end, of course we are disappointed in the incomplete art and the missing audio clips.  That audio really tied the room together.  But what we did was pretty awesome; we made a game, beginning to end.  We took a theme we hated and created an idea that wasn’t just squares and circles.  Mikhail made some great art, even though he’s never done pixel art before and didn’t have any sort of drawing tablet.  He’s going to be doing more pixel stuff in the future.  Count on it.  I said Count!

So where do we go from here?  Well you’ll want to continue down this road and take a right at the Old Creek Mill.  If you pass the schoolhouse, you’ve gone to far.  What?  Oh the game stuff, right.

Will we complete NightCap?  Well, a bit early to say, but if we don’t we will still take a lot from what we learned with us.

Will we do another Ludum Dare? I think most definitely we will be joining you lot again down the road… but not past the schoolhouse… that’s too far.

What about that penguin game? You mean, “Corndog Tuxedo”… we’ll see… we’ll see.

I want to thank everyone for playing the game!  And the comments, they’re great.  You all have a wonderful day.  Guns Up!

Shudda Hadda Gonna Game Jam!

Shudda Hadda Lotta Fun is back for more Ludum Dare after a year long hiatus (it’s been a year since our one and only entry).  We’re back for more fun, more adventure, more…. more…. more jam.

What are we using?

Unity, Garageband, cfxr, Spine, illustrator, photoshop, glass, ice, energy drink, coffee, mystery Doritos, pizza, cervezas, avocados, English muffins, German muffins, Australian muffins, Guatemalan muffinsGood Luck Everyone! Here’s hoping for a theme with crazy interesting ideas.

Get In The Jar!

LD31

Hey, Galvatross is fixed!

So lesson learned. Don’t update the controls of your game to work for a homemade arcade stick at the last minute, because you’ll accidentally leave those controls on when you push out your builds for the Jam.  So that is fixed, and if you have the chance, please check out:

The Galvatross LD31Post-Mortem Wrap-up:

As Ludum Dare 31 comes to an end here in a couple of days, I’m on the final push to play some more Ludlum dare games.  But before I do that, I want to take a little bit of time to talk about our game Galvatross

GalvatrossMarquee

Galvatross is ShuddaHaddaLottaFun’s third Ludum Dare game, our fourth game jam game, and certainly the most complete one we have ever made.  Things went a little more smoothly, plus we are a bit more experienced, so that helps.  I don’t want to spend too much time on this, so I’ll just outline the good and bad.

Galvatross_CharacterLARGE

THE GOOD

Complete art, that looks good too.

Complete game, and it’s playable!

We prototyped some nifty ideas

TranglordsLARGE

THE BAD

SFX balancing

Music

Joust

So let me talk about these for  a bit.  With the SFX, it became a last minute thing to fill out sound, so it was a lot of just plopping in sounds from SFXR without correcting their levels, making some of the sound effects Very annoying.  The Music actually had a lot of complements, so thank you.  But the reason it is listed in the bad is simply because it wasn’t what I wanted.  I had an idea as to what the music sounded like for Galvatross, but when I sat down to make it, it just wasn’t coming together in time.  Realizing I couldn’t waste my time trying to get what I wanted, I quickly threw something together in order to move on.  Finally, the Joust comparison.  When we first started working on the idea, we discussed how Galvatross was a period game, and we have a lot of backstory to the Galvatross franchise that don’t really fit into the jam, but in short the Joust influence is somewhat intentional.  Unfortunately it is too similar.  At first we talked about a shooting mechanism, but that would be too many buttons in our mind for an old arcade game with the jumping and zooming.  We then programmed it so you had the hit the Tranglors from the bottom, since you are protecting your little dude you’re carrying. That however made it too easy to accidentally kill enemies, and too difficult to do it on purpose.  The best strategy was just to stay still and let them land on you.  We switch that, but it just made it too much like Joust…

After the deadline we came up with a new idea for the attack controls that focused on the teleport mechanic.  Unfortunately with the holidays, I haven’t really had the time to get a working version implemented.  We have actually discussed continually working on Galvatross, which would be a first for us.  We have never continued working on a game jam game after the weekend has passed.

But you can help us! Yes! Inspire us!  We have 80 votes right now, which we are pretty sure is more then our other LD entries combined, which is great! We really want to hit 100 votes, and it would mean a lot to us if you could take the time to play our game before voting ends.

We are in!

This will be Ludum Dare number 6 for us… oh the memories…

Here’s to this being not the worst game we’ve ever made our best game yet!

we’ll be posting it here

https://shlfstudios.itch.io/

and who knows, maybe we’ll actually update it sometime with our other game jam games so even we can look at them.

Jeffrey with a Sword – the Musical

Ok… not musical, just music… made for the game.  Ok, this is just an excuse to post my music, and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.  The music that is, the game… well… it’s got some issues, but we got-er-dun so thumbs up!

That’s a pretty awesome soundtrack, congratulations.

Ludum Dare 37

We Did It!

A complete game! Front to back! No missing art or nothin’!

Pretty happy with this one if you can’t tell… More from us later once the jam winds die down… but for now we present:

Shadow Fencer Theatre!

CoverImage

Please enjoy!  Also, if you happen to have a Joystick to play the game with, let us know if it works.  We were having issues with the right stick not working with the HTML5 build, but we are on a Mac, so… you know…

Now with Working Joysticks!

Title_Card_Text

Fixed a little goofer, so now Joysticks are working on the Web Build. (Xbox 360 controller tested on PC, other setup results may vary, let us know if you have issues)

shadowfencer

Trust us, this game is way more fun with Controllers and a friend! Try it out!

Help Wanted!

Yo, who knows what’s what when it comes to Unity Physics 2D? Occasionally when the swords in our game collide, it breaks the hinge joints holding the sword to the arm…. what’s the deal with this?  Any tips and tricks with Physics 2D would be super appreciate.  Wanna squash this bug for good!

Meanwhile…. Check out Shadow Fencer Theatre!

Hinge joint should have a break threshold, set it to infinity I think.

The One About the Update

Hello All,

We just posted an update to our game Shadow Fencer Theatre, our final update before moving on to Post-Jam stuff (assuming no more bugs).  We listened to feedback and realized that the controls were not very intuitive, and people were getting stuck.  So, in this update we added vertical movement to the swords, as well as an in-game control list for those who don’t like to read the text below the screen.

controls

We hope people do not feel that this update is outside of the scope of a jam update.  We felt that if people were having difficulties playing, we needed to address it before moving on.  Like, it’s still way janky, but it’s better.  We have a patch notes section on our page, which shows what we have done, with a note on the patch notes stating we want you to rate us how you feel we should be rated.  Meaning, if you don’t like the control change, then just play the game only moving the sword left and right.

We have lots of ideas for continuing post jam, and will post a bit more here. until then, check out our game.

If you changed the controls, you should release the game separately.

I find it difficult to say what is too much change and what is allowed. In my entry, I fixed some hitbox issues which in turn made it necessary to do some adjustments to the damage values, so I felt that it may be getting close to the threshold of what was allowed, but since I didn’t add anything fundamental, I felt I was on the safe side.

ShuddaHaddaLottaFun’s Top Games of LD37!

Now that the jam is about to end, and we’ve played quite a bit of games, we wanted to point out some of our favorite games we played during Ludum Dare 37… and also our game.  Play these things!

3479-shot0-1482045287.gif-eq-900-500

Walkie Talkie – Ingenious is the only word to describe this game.  A working chat application that allows you to type in messages, but then each message gets transformed into a playable platformer level.  I mean, common… what!?  That’s crazy dope.

7984-shot0-1481588018.png-eq-900-500

Face Man – Here at ShuddaHaddaLottaFun, we like games with style, and Face Man has that, in faces… and maybe butts… I dunno.  A jump and gun shooter where your dead enemies faces become your new weapons.  This is a game to come back to and play again and again.

44332-shot0-1481595224.jpg-eq-900-500

Cancelled Refuge – One of us might have had a hissy-fit in this games comments section, but it was deserved… this game is TOO good.  This game is practically ready to be flashed to a cartridge, sent back in time, and put on the shelf at your local Hollywood Video to rent and play on your Nintendo.  It’s got a sound test for crying out load.  Super fun to play, and look forward to seeing more of it in the future hopefully.

56711-shot1-1481630345.png-eq-900-500

Karate Basketball – Let’s be honest, this game could have been awful and we still would have found it funny.  It’s a good joke.  NBA Jam, but starring Draymond Green kicking people.  But this game is also really good and fun to play.  I mean, it feels like NBA Jam, but with a kick button.  It’s great.

125168-shot0-1481516773

ClapClap – Also known as “Real Life: The Simulation”, ClapClap is an awesomely awkward adventure in social clap expectations.  You are at a concert, ready to bring forth applause from your sweaty hands, but need to clap at the right time when the song ends… and there are a lot of false endings.  Clap too early, and you get some real mean-mugging from the folks around you.

and lastly… our game

Shadow Fencer Theatre Gameplay

Shadow Fencer Theatre – A 1-2 player fencing game set in the world of shadow puppets.  We are super happy with how our game turned out this jam, and would love for you to check it out! It’s super silly fun when you have some friends to play with. Play it and tell us what you think!
