First LD project is going well

This is my first Ludum Dare and this is a screen shot for my game… I have only been programming for 6 months, so I’m more in this for the fun of it than the competition. Everyone’s posts look very interesting, makes me feel bad about how mine is so far but, that’s something you have to expect for a beginner!

Anywhere, here is the screenshot…

Good luck to everyone else!

Just passed the 12 hour mark…

It’s my first ludum dare entry, and I just passed 12 hours of development!

Anyway, here’s some screenshots of the progress…

screenshot2

This screenshot shows the game in it’s current state.

completed_concept

This is the concept for the completed game![Was drawn about 6 hours after beginning the project]

dead_zombie

Yeah, there will be a bit of blood in this game. Was going to insert blood through the use of particle effects, so that I could have an option to “tone down the violence” with the blood level, but then I just thought: screw it!

For only learning how to program for around 6 months, it looks like I’ve done alright so far. All the other projects look so awesome, can’t wait to see more! :)

Tomorrow: adding sound, fixing main game mechanic, adding menus, scoring, end screen, and a ton of other things!

Ported game states, menus and sfx prepared!

FINALLY ported the game states, so that I can soon get back to the actually gameplay… sorted out music and sound effects this morning!

Here’s the 3rd snapshot for the current menu and the menu class…

screenshot3

There is no mouse input class yet, that’s the next thing to do!

To do list:

-Mouse input                                                                                                                                                                                                                      -Actual game objectives                                                                                                                                                                                                -Finishing/patching spawning system                                                                                                                                                                    -Zombie death animation[killing zombies has never been so satisfying!]

Finished my game! :D

For someone who’s only been programming for 6 months, I’m surprised I actually finished in time! Although mine sucks compared to how good everyone else’s looks, I’m still glad with how it turned out. Here’s a comparison of the concept art for the game I did yesterday, and the actual finished game!

Original concept art

Original concept art

I’ll be sure to continue this game after the competition, this current version of the game will be the ‘lite’ version. I used Bfxr to make my sound effects and for the music, a 16-bit rendition of Get Lucky by Daft punk 😀

It’s rare that a screenshot looks better than the concept art! Good job :) send me a link if you don’t mind and I’ll play it when I’m done with mine (either on here or @triplevisgames on twitter)

Boom, SCREENSHOT!

I had many ideas for most of the themes EXCEPT this one, and of course, this one was chosen. I have been away for most of the day, and despite only having 10 months programming experience, I’m going pretty well! Check it out…screenshot

Although it looks like I’ll have to call it a day. I may have to enter the jam since I have so many ideas yet not enough time to figure out how to implement them all in such a short space of time. So, early tomorrow and possibly monday, getting into shooting mechanic, further level design, possibly music and sound and some other cool stuff.

BTW, if you wonder why there are so many files on the left, my eclipse screwed up and there’s files everywhere, better remove them before handing in the project 😛

Collision detection (oh noes)

Yeah, it’s that time of the development again- COLLISION DETECTION. Everything keeps crashing! D:

Because of this it is likely that I will not finish in time. The collision is working PERFECTLY for the player, although when implemented into other objects such as enemies and bullets, the game just crashes. Don’t you love it when eclipse gives you crash reports that don’t help?

screenshot2

So yep, I may not finish in time, but I won’t stop believing either! :)

Day 1 Status

I’m back for my 3rd Ludum Dare! After a [very] rough go last time, I am ready to strike back. And things are looking pretty good so far…

screenshot1

If you’re not sure what you’re looking at, there is a player at the bottom, a troll[enemy] at the top and some tnt on the 2nd row from the top. I got a good screenshot here as it shows the tnt in all 3 states (static, flashing, and explosion)

some grass blocks are darker as they are trap blocks that you will fall through unless you jump over them 😛

It took me a while to come up with something reasonable. My first draft was interesting and had an awesome concept art, but I couldn’t find any good gameplay value for it…

screenshot2

It looks like I could develop this another time…

[^^^kudos to anyone who can spot the easter egg^^^]

My second idea didn’t work out. The KeyInput didn’t work at all. It did at one point, then it just stopped working, so I had to scrap that idea.

Anyways, I’m off to bed. Can’t wait to finish off the game tomorrow[hopefully ;)]

Good luck to all! <3

Haha like the daft punk poster in the second screen shot, nice touch.

First post, 4th LD

I’ve been going for about 2 hours and finally have a somewhat working engine for a 2D platformer.

This is what I am using/will use:

Language: Java

IDE: Eclipse

Music: Guitar, Audactiy

Graphics: Paint.NET

Fueled by: Ice cream, jelly, and some Daft Punk :)

World <3

I’ve decided to go for a more ‘vibrant’ and ‘non-artificial’ look for the world and so far it’s working out great 😀

The small black mess you see is an object in the game. I’m not really gonna say what yet, because I feel like this time I actually have a unique idea, unlike the previous 3 competitions.

Next: adding the unconventional weapon

Later: tweaking the game and making it fun!

First Night Post

So I got the weapon and “enemy” ai finished… but slacked off for 5 hours D:

will have to work super hard tomorrow.

Best luck to all.. have a good night!

Haven’t posted in a while… SCREENSHOT!

This has been my best LD so far. I thought I’d post a screenshot or two of the progress…

Next up: finishing gameplay

Later: Sounds effects, music, game states, *POSSIBLY* polishing, *POSSIBLY* in-game comic to show what’s going on

Entry system unavailable?

The entry system is apparently down for some reason..  and i have no time left to enter.

Looks like I’ll be entering the jam… :(

For me it work fine. Try again ++

LD33

Fifth Ludum Dare, let’s go!

Can’t wait! Everyone seems to be making these posts so I thought I’d hop on the bandwagon.

Language: Java

IDE: Eclipse

Graphics: Paint.NET

Audio: bfxr, and other 8bit-related things

I really hope to make a tron-style game, and some of the themes look awesome such as mind control/dream related

themes; these will give me a chance to try out (and fail) with using some image filters.

Good luck to everyone!

Level creator, collision(sort of), gravity, and more!

Today’s been off to an alright start. Windows performed an update on me, you know what they’re like!

Anyway, I’ve got quite far. I’ve added levels that you can draw using a paint editor, which is extremely efficient.

I’ve also added working key input and player gravity, and sort of working collision.

I have an awesome idea in mind for this theme, which I thought up of last night- it’s the first time out of my five doing LD that the theme is actually in my favour!

anyway, here’s a screenshot:

screenshot0

We have lights. And yes, they flicker.

Since my last post, I’ve added textures and a nice level. Although you can’t see a lot of the game in the screenshot below, trust me, it’s going well.

The level is a sort-of castle with nice lights and a secret dungeon. Reaching the end of the castle will initiate the boss battle, a monster… Uh, yeah, that’s you!

And that’s where my main game mechanic comes in. Not gonna tell you what it is, not gonna tell you what it is… 😉

Anyway, there’s still a lot to go, here’s a screeny:

screenshot1

5+1/2 hours in, good deal of progress.

12 hours in, going GREAT!

The main game mechanic is working perfectly. It had a lot of problems earlier, but it’s going just fine for now.

I’ve got the whole game pretty much wrapped up- in record time! Well, for me at least…

This LD is a first for me- despite having entered 4 times previously, this is the first time in which I have created my own music. An OST will be included with the game.

Despite having the game pretty much finished, there’s still a lot of polishing to do. The boss battle isn’t quite fun just yet, and I need to add menus/game states for death/wins/title etc. I also need to finish the boss death animation and add sounds before I’m done.

Here’s the screenshot of the boss battle room:

screenshot2

Round up!!!!!!

Ok, I thought I’d do a quick round-up on my game. I had an awesome idea from the start that turned out much better than expected, yet I didn’t point it out in previous posts as I didn’t want my idea being stolen, even though there are thousands of people out there who could’ve composed the idea in a much more enjoyable way.

screenshot3

Here I have pointed out the different elements of the game. This is the main stage of the game where you have to fight the monster. You’ve got your player, your monster, your disc to fight the monster with, your disc power meter and your health bar. Simple enough, right?

What’s that, you ask? The theme is “You are the Monster” and you don’t even play as the monster?

Well, keep your pants on and let me explain.

screenshot4

Here, you have a different scene. This time, the player becomes the enemy and the enemy becomes the player. That’s right, you SWITCH PLACES. Fancy mechanic, huh? Well, it’s got a lot of bugs…

The story of the game is that you’re playing a game (duh…) where an omnipotent program controls what happens in the gaming world (kudos to anyone who can guess what movie inspired this game). This program has had enough of the enemy losing and believes that in order for the enemy to win, it must become the player.

The hard part about this is the mechanic that causes it to happen. Switching places between the AI and the player is hard work, and as expected comes packed with plenty of bugs; however, I believe I am close to cracking it.

Don’t worry, there’s a satisfying explosion at the end as you blast the bits(literally) out of the omnipotent program.

MOBILE DEVICE CONTROLLER SUPPORT!!!!!!!

I dunno why I’m so happy about this, but it’s so cool

Using monect connect, I can allow mobile controller support.

The controls are a bit awkward, I just promised myself I’d try some controller variations in this game for those who prefer more of a variety- other controller options are WASD/SPACE/etc. keyboard layout and the Z/X/LEFT/RIGHT NES emulator keyboard layout.

Here’s a screeny of the controller options UI (phone version). Does the website displayed on the phone look familiar? 😉

screenshot5

And… I’m… done! The Omnipotent Program

My game is finally finished! This one was an ambitious project and however different it has become from what I originally imagined I am pretty happy with it.

screenshot6

The game’s called “The Omnipotent Program” (disclaimer: the title screen looks a lot more alive than it does in the

screenshot above).

The game is about a program that controls what happens in the world of games. In this particular game, where players battle against a troll in a castle, the program has become aggravated due to the fact that the player always seems to win eventually. He decides it’s time to even out the playing field and let the enemy win.

However, the only explanation that the program can come up with for why the player always wins is because HE is the PLAYER. Because of this, he can see only to SWITCH the PLAYER and the ENEMY… YOU become the MONSTER.

He thinks that once the enemy becomes the player, he will finally be able to win.

Let’s see what the results will be…

I’ve also added a secret minigame into the game for those who find the core game a bit too “restrictive”. The minigame will have the player collect 10 “bits”. Upon collecting 10 bits, the player enters GOD MODE, with infinite jumping and projectiles that are the nemesis of all non-player/non-OP(Omnipotent Program) objects.

That’s all! It’s sad that Ludum Dare is over, but the next one will come around soon. The next one’s probably going to be my last for a while as I have some very important tests in the mid-year… :(

Good luck to all of those who are still working!

LD34

Isometric world?!

This is my first post of LD34. onto my 6th LD! Does that mean I count as a veteran? 😛

I haven’t been very active with the LD hype as I have been before, I’ve been exhausted by pesky school work and haven’t really had the time to think about it! That means my ideas haven’t been building up as I saw what the themes could potentially be since I haven’t been voting like the previous compo’s.

Anyway, I’ve never tried an isometric game before, so I saw this as the perfect opportunity to try it out, and it’s going quite well…

iso1

No actual game ideas yet, but I sometimes work best when building a game with no idea. Let’s see how it turns out!

Good luck all!
