My First MiniLD – Core Influence

Hey everyone!  I had a complete blast taking part in MiniLD #58 and I can’t wait until Ludum Dare #32.  This was my first time participating in a game jam and my first time actually completing a game from start to finish.  Since I wanted to know if I could actually complete something within the 72 hours for the jam (minus sleeping 6 hours/night <my daily average/week>, eating, bathroom breaks, whatnot), I left myself with 48 hours.  I finished just under that mark; timing myself with my iPhone stopwatch, whenever I did anything related to the game over the week.

I started out with a short one liner: “A game where the player must defend their core element from negative influences and allow positive influences to add to their core”, then worked the PONG theme into that.  The one liner came out of the thought of the influences that we encounter throughout our life cycle and how we reject or accept those influences; developing ourselves as a result of those encounters.

From there I began jotting down ideas and sketching out scenarios into a notebook.  Once I got enough down, I opened up illustrator and photoshop to make my initial game art to get things started in Unity.  Throughout the whole development process, I learned so much and found focal points of study to improve my skills.

Ludum Dare 32 – I’m…

IN.  Yup, I’m in.  After MiniLD #58, I feel confident that I can complete the 72 hour jam and have something playable by the end.  Can’t wait to see what the theme will be and to get started!

My First Full Ludum Dare

This was my Ludum Dare.  I did enter miniLD #58, but this time crunch was something else!

Can’t wait to play as many games as I can in the next 20 days!

Here’s a link to my submission: The March of Melons

Time for some RR for a bit.

Kudos to my wife Amy for being so awesome and giving me all the time I needed.

Outstanding work. Is that a super trap in the tree is see? Well played. Cannot wait to see what you can do on a longer project. Controls and art are great. Not sure if there was a way to “win” or complete the game. You may have run out of time or I missed a melon counter or something. Very cool concept for the dare. Also, melon baller, hits close to home for me. haha! Keep up the great work.

A post about I’m in…

I’m in.

Hopefully finish more than I did last time.  I had fun learning how to animate during LD32, but I failed on the game end.

Eat Humans

This was my second Ludum Dare and it was a ton of fun.  I had a lot more fun with this theme than “An Uncoventional Weapon”, though that was fun, too.  Tomorrow, I’ll kick back and play a bunch of games and rate them.  For now, go Eat Humans!

Eat Humans – A Short, Kinda Not Post-Mortem Post-Mortem

EatHumans_TitleScreen

First Day – The Idea:

At first I was going to do a game where you were a dad monster feeding your baby monster humans.  Kinda morbid, but the artwork I would create would have lent a funny, somewhat non-disturbing visual of the concept.  I was not able to get much done during this day other than visually thinking about how the game would play, look and feel.  Why was I not able to do much the first day other than that?  I am in the process of buying my first home and the brunt of the work for that happen to land that Thursday and Friday, so yay for that timing.

Second Day – A change of plans:

Yup, the second I started drawing the artwork a different character emerged from the pencil and paper: Poppy.  A dapper, middle aged monster who got the chance to be on Bob & Bob A’s Dining Room Arena game show: Eat Humans.

EatHumans_Scan_001

The idea of the game was something akin to a cash shower grab booth, only this was for monsters catching and eating their fill of humans within a certain time frame.  There are different types of humans depending on their diet: Red Shirts = Red Meat Eaters, Green Shirts = Vegetarians, Blue Shirts = Seafood Eaters, Orange Shirts = Dessert Eaters, and piece de resistance (PDR) = Fancy Food Humans.  Then there would be the humans who would fight back, so Gray Shirts who would explode when close to you.  Each would have a different point value and the point value would increase if your monster “prepared” each human respectively by either Sawing, Chilling, or Cooking.  To defend yourself from the gray humans you would shoot a fireball at them to defeat them.

I ended up spending Saturday developing the artwork, most of the animations and getting controls working in Unity.

Third Day – Coding:

I spent the entire third day coding, dealing with physics and learning a lot of new things in Unity.

Final day – More Coding and Stress:

I started the day freaking out about the fact that I probably was not going to finish the game with a results screen that would give the game some kinda meaning at the end of play….well, my worries came true, so I guess I feel good that my worrying was not for nothing?  I don’t know.  Anyway, during the last 20 minutes was painful.  The console in Unity was going crazy with red flags and I was not sure what was going wrong.  Long story short, I just failed to delete a certain gameobject from hierarchy I was using for temporary purposes.  All was good after, so I built the game and submitted.

What I Failed To Do:

Produce a game with a clear objective.  Sure, it says Eat Humans, so I guess that is the objective?  Nope.  Maybe something more like eat X amount of humans withing X amount of time.  There was several different ways to go, but in the end I ran out of time to provide such an important aspect of a game.

What I Plan To Do In The Future:

Design a game with a clear and fun objective.  Although, I am pleased with what I managed to turn out during the jam.  Being this is the third game I have ever made, I still learning so much and I am pretty excited to dive back into very soon.  I also plan on doing more game jams or just challenging myself to finish something within a weeks time.  I have not done One Game a Month, though.  So, I might start there.

Here is the part where I ask the reader to go and play/rate my game…the link is below:

Leave me a comment and I will click on your avatar and rate your game within a day or two.  Thanks!

Eat Humans – Post Version

Well, I had one last go at this game before needing to focus on packing up to move to my new house.  I fixed a few issues and tried a few things.  The goal of the game is to claim your part of the human population for consumption.  In the case of this world in Eat Humans, the population is 7 billion.  You have to prepare the humans before consumption by hitting them with either a freezeball, fireball or sawblade.  Consuming the humans in a “Full Course” provides a score bonus.  Eating an extra human of the same type will reset the “Full Course” bonus.  I wish I had time to put a proper tutorial to play and do some other things.  Please give the POST version a try!  Please comment and rate if you have time!  Thanks!  :)

Not sure what was going on, but during the last 14 minutes I was locked out.  Tried for the past 10 minutes to get back in to rate/comment on the games I had on my list and played, but can’t get back in.  Sorry to anyone who voted/commented my way and didn’t get the favor returned.  I really wish I could have returned the favor.  GAHH!

I’m In…

…just hope that I will be ready.  Last Ludum Dare I was preparing for the move to my new house and did not get a lot of time the first day to work on my entry.  Somewhat settled into the new crib, now.  During the move, I sold a bunch of stuff, including my Oculus Rift DK1 (every time I put the thing on it made me feel sick 10 minutes in…especially with Windlands).  So, I bought Spine 2D, 2 Steam Controllers and a Steam Link.  I am hoping to get familiar enough with Spine 2D to use it for this LD, so I’ll list it for now in my set of tools.  So far, I love it.  For the past LDs, I’ve used a combination of Blender and Unity for my 2D animations.  For this Ludum Dare I will be using the following:

Game Development: My Brain (…might need an upgrade, me thinks)

Game Engine: Unity (…because I like to think I know it)

Artwork: Photoshop & Illustrator (…because staring at them both for 8-12 hours at my jobs is not enough apparently)

Animation: Spine 2D (…because I just bought it and its neato)

Audio & SFX: Audacity, Bfxr, my guitar & vocal cords and various kitchen equipment (…because I can play a mean set of pots and pans)

Can’t wait to start voting on a theme.  See you all in December!  Have a great Thanksgiving and Happy Holidays!

Had to call it quits this LD

Why? Too many life interruptions. I had a game going. Core gameplay done.  Not enough time for art, music, play testing and polish.  I need a cabin that is in an undisclosed location with internet, my computer, food & drink, bed, and a bathroom.  That’s impossible, so next time…planning a few weeks ahead and notifications to everyone to leave me alone for 4 days.  Bitter?  A little.  I hate missing a deadline.  I’ll finish the game.  Just won’t be ready for LD.

In any case:

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!!

Core Influence: miniLD #58 game transformed for mobile

I have not participated in a Ludum Dare in quite some time. During those weekends of the events, I spent my time working on an entry I submitted for miniLD #58: Core Influence. I went back to my original brainstorming notes and tried to redesign the original game so that it fit the conceptual theme better in an abstract way: a game about positive and negative influences. My intent was only to do one game mode and release the game.

Well, that was not going to work for me, as like many of you I feed the feature creep. Added unlockables & acheivements (local & GPGS), rewarded video ads, cloud saving (GPGS), and 3 other unlockable game modes. Was just going to release for Android, but a lot of my family and friends have iPhones and iPads. So, that had to happen. Also, got my friend from Electric Ally Music involved, Ryan Looney, and he created the soundtrack and sfxs for the game. In the end, I am really happy with everything that I have accomplished with Core Influence and can’t wait to get started on the next game and participate in the next Ludum Dare! If you have time, please download Core Influence from your store of choice and give it a try! Thanks!

"A Better Out There" - LD 38 ~ Small World

ABetterOutThere_0.JPG

I've missed the past few Ludum Dares and forgot how intense it is to make a game in 72 hours. To say the least, I did my best. Game play is unfinished. However, I submitted a thing! A few things that I need to do next time:

*Plan more, panic less I got some ideas going, but they were unfinished and I just started working. This drove me into a wall of WTF am I doing really quick and I just sat there wondering what to do.

*Worry about the game play first, art last I say this every time I do a jam, but never follow through. I should just get placeholders in and replace if time allows.

*Submit before submission hour I panicked when I went to submit. The site was being hammered and all I saw were the spinning loading icons of doom. Fortunately, I made it.

*Keep My Cool Everything was going O.K. for me, until about 1pm today. Then, I just slowly started to freak out. I don't even know why and would like to go back in time to smack the crap out of myself. In the end, at the end of the 72 hours, your prize is your creation, no matter what you completed and what it may become if you so choose to go forward with it.

I'm in!!!

I'm in!

It's been a while since my last game jam, but this time I hopefully will be working in a team! Recently, while game testing a tabletop design, two testers joined in on the development and we formed a team called South Gate Games. The tabletop game is still in the early stages (we don't even have a name for it yet!). Thankful to have access to a Kodak NexPress Digital Press for printing new iterations of the game for testing. Follow our progress on our Twitter and Facebook page.

This will be their first game jam, so I'm hoping for a great theme for us and everyone! Here are mine: boywithstickemThemeSuggestions/emldj#45.JPG

Can't wait for the theme slaughter! :smiling_imp:
