So excited! I AM IN!

Super excited for this jam. Can't wait. Happy jamming everyone!

Settled on an idea! Kind of...

So I have settled on doing A 3D platformer, possibly puzzle based, where the main mechanic is that you can change size. Let's see how this goes!

A limerick for Ludum Dare

There once was a humble game jammer, who dreamed of a Dare filled with glamour.

But when he saw his screen,

he cried "I hate this theme!"

And he smashed his PC with a hammer...

Happy Ludum Dare everyone! Let's hope for a good theme! May you keep you're stress and/or rage in control. :joy: (Please note, I have never, and will never smash my PC out of rage. :yum:)

Fishing x Rhythm/Racing?

:fish: :heavymultiplicationx: :musicalnote:/:checkeredflag:

OH YES! :joy:

Good Morning Ludum Dare!

Alrighty. Back to work. Haven't done as much as I'd like but I think I'm alright. Trying to figure out how complex certain mechanics should be for the games flow as a whole.

The basic idea is a fishing game combined with a racing game(kinda) but with rhythm mechanics. You try to catch fish and they pull you along a race track, and you have to play a little rhythm game segment to hold onto the fish. That's the idea at the moment at least. Might be a little different later... thinking about expanding the racing and scrapping the rhythm segment... I'm not sure. :fish: :checkered_flag:

Help me name my game!

It's a Fishing x Racing game where you catch fish that drag you along a boat track. Very much a comedy game so puns are appreciated. Please, help me name my game!FishxRace.PNG

I'm in!

Once again I think I have some things going on the weekend of Ludum Dare, but I'm in! Tools will be Unity, Blender, Gimp & Paint.NET, Audacity, and FL Studio.

Innovation VS. Polish

So I've got an idea but I don't think it's that big or innovative. Curious what everyone's thoughts are about doing something new vs doing something polished...

I'm (Gonna Try To Be) In!

In the middle of my college semester, and I didn't get enough stuff done ahead of time to make this comfortable BUT... I think I'm gonna try to jam this time. 45! What a historic number! Alright, here's the tools rundown:

  • Engine: Unity
    • I switched to Unity from GameMaker a few years back because I wanted to feel like I was using a * "real" * game engine... That was kinda dumb, but I've really enjoyed learning Unity and the ability to do 3D has been awesome. No plans of going back.
  • Music/Sound: FL Studio 20
    • A few years back I finally decided to get myself some music software and I've been loving it. And with Flex just added I now have access to a slew of ready-to-go instruments including orchestral and electronic sounds. Hoping I'll have the time to actually do a soundtrack. SCOPE SMALL PEOPLE!'
    • Also, depending on how things go and what I need I may use something like BFXR for added sound effects.
    • Finally, I'll be using Audacity if I need to record little things or do minor editing.
  • Art: Whatever I've got!
    • This is really gonna depend on the needs of the game but for 2D stuff I'll probably primarily work in Inkscape, possibly with the support of Krita. Who knows, I may even just pull out some markers and my printer's scanner and se what happens!
    • For 3D I'll be using Blender. It's the only 3D software I have experience in but I love it.
  • Code: Honestly, whatever's already set up. I think I have VS Code set up with Unity right now because I wanted to try some silly plugins... Probably that.
  • Version Control: You didn't think I'd leave this out did you? I've got the GitHub desktop client installed and I've been loving it. It's the first time I've really used version control and it's made it really easy. Highly recommended. I know its a game jam and time is precious but version control will allow you to jump back if you try to add that one feature and accidentally destroy everything you loved about your game... Also, for teams it means a central, organized place for your project and nobody steps on each other's toes.

So yeah, I'm gonna try to do this thing! It won't be my first Ludum Dare, I've participated on-and-off for a few years, but it will be the first one in a while and the first since I started college. I'm in my 3rd semester now at my local community college getting as much done as I can before I transfer to university for a Computer Science degree with a Game/Sim Dev emphasis. Really excited.

Alright everybody, sorry for the long post. Let's JAM!

Update #0 - Not much

So, between procrastination and homework, I've done nothing. I do have a little bit of an idea, but I'll need to develop it further and then start getting some prototyping done. Gonna get some sleep and then see what we can do tomorrow, it's clear from homework so hopefully I can get some stuff done. I definitely have some stuff to do Sunday, but I'm hoping I can still get some stuff done. I'll have basically no time Monday since I have class in the morning. But we'll see, I can probably at least package for submission...

I'm in! Long time, no see... (+ theme discussion)

Missed the last few events due to school but I'm off this semester so let's make a game!

I'll be using Unity for my engine and Blender for any 3D art, other than those my tools will probably just be whatever I feel is best for the job.

Now, let's talk themes. Annotation 2020-04-16 130119.png Here's my votes for the Final Round, at least for now as I may change them as I think more them.

I really hated "Turn a violent game non-violent" and "You are the power source" at first because they feel limiting, but they could lead to some interesting ideas. "1 minute to prepare" is also very limiting and will likely lead to a bunch of tower defense games... Knowing LD, these are some of the most likely to win.

I love "Decay", "Side Effects", "Fragile", "Momentum", and "Connections." These 1/2 word themes are always my favorite, but never win. A good theme can inspire mechanics, setting, story, art, and more all at once, but mechanics is the most important part of that to me, so I really like these short themes that describe action(s).

"An abandoned world" also feel pretty likely to win, but I really don't like it. I feel like it describes setting and maybe narrative, but says nothing about mechanics. I feel like you could shoehorn a lot of games into this theme with some art and flavor text. If this wins, I may try to fit some old ideas of mine into the setting to try and complete some old ideas.

Anyway, those are some of my thoughts. I don't want to be too grumpy about themes, I think part of LD is making a weird prompt into something fun, but I much prefer starting with a neat theme then trying to invent one out of what I'm given.

Am I... In?!

Just moved on-campus to university and starting in person classes this week. That said, I think I might just be able to get my work done early and make a game! Let's give this a shot... I'm in!

Tools: Unity3d, FL Studio 20, Blender, Affinity Designer, anything else that seems useful!

Some Great Themes This Time!

Screenshot 2020-09-30 183105.png Loving some of the themes this time. A couple that are just alright but could still produce some interesting results. And of course, a couple that I kinda hate. Well, let's see what we end up with! Have a great jam everybody!

Okay, I'm In!

I'm IN!

I was concerned about committing to participating due to still being in the last third of my university semester. That said, I miss jamming! I'm gonna commit and do whatever I can to ensure I can participate, even if I have to break for other responsibilities here and there. I'll be participating solo, but—as always—I'll be using friends and family as a sounding board. I've been going back through Pixel Prophecy's excellent post-mortem docs to get pumped, finished the theme slaughter, and making plans for the crazy weekend coming up. Next stop, play with Unity a little to refamiliarize myself with it after a much to long hiatus. Anyway, that leads me to...

My tool list:
  • :desktop: Engine: Unity
    • Heard Pixel Prophecy describe it as a Swiss-Army Knife and I couldn't agree more. Might be more efficient to use other tools depending on the idea, but having an understanding of Unity means I have a base to build off of for most anything.
  • :pencil: Editor: Visual Studio
    • Just using it for it's easy integration with Unity, as long as I can make sure it's properly configured before the jam.
  • :musical_keyboard: Music Tools: FL Studio, Arturia KeyLab 61 MkII, Misc. VSTs, Audacity for any basic recording/editing
    • It's what I have, it's what I know how to use, and it's versatile enough for me.
  • :loud_sound: Misc. Audio Tools: Audacity, SFXR/BFXR
    • Extra tools for recording sounds, quick adjustments, and creating SFX quickly.
  • :paintbrush: Art Tools: Affinity Designer/Photo, Paint.Net (pixel art), MagicaVoxel (3D Voxel), Blender (3D General)
    • All the tools I have on hand, used based on need.

I think that's everything, but you never know. Have a great jam everybody! See you when the Theme Voting starts!
