I’m in for the first time!

I might miss the beginning a little due to work, but I’ll be jamming for the first time! Super excited.

Engine: Unity + C#, Possibly Clickteam Fusion 2.5 for prototyping

Graphics: Inkscape

Sound: BFXR (I think)

Music: Where ever I can find it :)

I’m In!

Failed to finish last time I tried Ludum Dare. Determined to finish this time. This will be the first Ludum Dare I complete!

Weapon of choice: Clickteam Fusion 2.5

SFX: BFXR

Locked In The Main Mechanic

Had to bang my head quite a bit to finally settle on the mechanic I want. The idea/mechanic so far:

  • The player pushes blocks towards the edge of the screen to “shape shift” that specific quadrant.

My biggest struggle was getting pixel perfect collision so the player could push blocks around the map. I gave up on this after banging my head for an hour. I know it’s possible, but I was losing time trying to figure it out. Instead I made it so if you touch a block it moves on its own in the direction you pushed it. The block will stop at the edge of the screen and you have to give it an extra push to lock in the shape shift.

This actually ended up being a more fun mechanic than I had originally intended so it works out. Tomorrow I will be figuring out a way to turn this mechanic into an actual game. Time for some sleep. Hope everyone’s having a good time!

Had to restart several times to finally land on this mechanic

The theme for my first Ludum Dare: Code. Throw it away. Code. Throw it away.

Finally discovered this neat little mechanic.

You can only pass through blocks that have the same color as the dividers. The goal is to match the objective colors (the one flashing). I may add a time component / scoring to actually turn it into a game. There’s still some slight collision issues that need to be ironed out. Tomorrow is polish.

I’m In!

This will be my second Ludum Dare! I’ll be looking to up my narrative design skills by using Twine and Piskel.

Good luck everyone!

Core Game Loop Complete!

First night was a success. I created the core gameplay loop and I’m ready to start integrating it into the story. The story’s been outlined and I’m pretty happy with the direction I’m taking it. I’m striving to create a procedural narrative game and it’s definitely been challenging, but I got a good amount of the code base written out.

I’m feeling a bit vulnerable creating a text based game. They’re inherently not as pretty to look at as other types of games, but I’m going to do my best to bring this one to life and make it enjoyable for the player. Here’s a screenshot of the code I’ve written so far. Hopefully tomorrow I’ll have some decent in-game screenshots to show off.

Time to get some rest now.

First pass at the game’s layout is complete

This being my first text based game, I knew that the aesthetics should be slightly more than just white text and blue links. I tried to spice it up as best I can. I also settled on a name for the game.

Here are some screenshots of the layout as it is now:

Art isn’t my strong suit but I’m going to do the best I can to get in some animations to spice up the dialogue.

The Gameplay:

  • You play as an out-of-work Game Designer due to a market crash in the far, far future.
  • You have an idea to start making games using technology from the 1980’s in the hopes of standing out and making a creative statement during a recession.
  • If you release a game that doesn’t do well…let’s just say there’s a lot at stake.
  • As you progress you’ll meet new characters and be faced with difficult choices as you aim to manage your Mental Strength, Creativity, and Ambition while working on each game.

What’s Left?

  • Art and animations are needed to break up text.
  • Continue writing out the story and making content. The gameplay loop and logic is complete. Now I need to focus on creating a story with interesting choices and game content.
  • The game is technically in a finished state, so everything else is just adding content and polish.

Probably gonna take a quick nap though. Pretty tired.

The Last Game Designer Is Finished!

cover.gif

Another Ludum Dare complete. I had a blast making this one, as usual. The struggle to finish something is difficult in day-to-day life, but LD always kicks me back in gear.

Feels great to finish something, even if it's small. You can check out the game page here. Good luck everyone, can't wait to play all the games.

Love and Death

Here's what I have up and running so far.

loveemand/emdeath.gif

Not sure where I'm planning to take the game but it's been a lot of fun so far. Time to catch some Zzzzzzz. Good luck to everyone out there jammin away!

Amor Fati - My first Compo Game is done!

amor_fati.gif

Amor Fati is a feel-good micro game about what can be created from nothing. For the jam I challenged myself to make a non-combative game that stuck closely with the theme.

The whole jam I was enduring a cold, but I was able to power through and get the game done. It's a small scope game, but given the available time and energy, I'm happy with the result.

Can't wait to play everyone's games. Good luck to everyone fighting to make the deadline!
