Ludum Dare 50 April 2–5, 2022

Polishing the post-jam version

Made a shockwave effect for the post-jam version of my game Ice Ace! You can play it here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/50/ice-ace ezgif.com-gif-maker.gif coverSmall.png

Tominrigg Tactics now works in the browser!

Screen_Small.png

Only took me a week to put the time in to fix this but it's working now at least. Download option is still there for anyone who prefers that as well. Would love to have new players give it a try!

And I will take a moment to thank everyone who has played the game so far. Putting this game together for the jam was a big victory for me and seeing people enjoy the game and give feedback on it is just amazing to thank you very much!

Check it out here.

Stream starts in one hour! Let's play Ludum Dare 50 - Part Four

Hi there! Part four of my let’s play series of LD games will stream one hour from now, at 6pm / 18 CEST. Last week was already amazing and I was really sad I couldn't make it yesterday, but I’m really looking forward to play and rate some more games today!
You can join the stream here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5c0GndY1SY

If you want a chance for your game to be featured, just fill out this survey: https://forms.gle/XwC8zZZG6FCgfkjw7
Games whose creators are with us for the stream will have a much higher chance of getting picked, so make sure to tune in :)
(the first game is decided already though, as I delayed this one in the last stream, it will be Super Mowser Bros by @jrevel, @clement-feanor, @michael-assing and @guilloteam - https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/50/super-mowser-bros)

PS: The full list of already covered and still available games can now be viewed here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1xiUHrIWDxyXTqSjDr3tWCN_YiCiVFp1yJ7JE3FS0gNA

Thanks Guys, 80 Ratings !

Thank you all!

For the second time (out of 3 games :sob:) I have gotten 20+ ratings! If your game supports Linux or Web, comment a link to it and I'll try it out!

Almost up to 20 ratings

Im almost at 20 ratings and would apreciate any help getting there.

If you post your games in the comments i will rate your games in return.

Okay, my friend beat me at my own game!

One of the greatest honors I've been able to receive as a video game creator is being beaten at my own game.

And my friend has achieved it!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rg9nxRtMjk0

If you dare to beat my friend (10 coins at 25.460 seconds) and want to share it in a video I will be happy to receive that honor too!

Playing+Rating: Round 3

Arnold-Minigun.jpg

Hi everyone! It is me again!

As usual, I’m playing and rating games.

So if you like, please, write a comment below and I will play and rate your game :) I prefer games with less than 20 ranting, but I do not mind, if you have more.

I already have 20+ ranting, so if you want to play my game - thank you, but if you have limited time, then please, go to the Danger Zone instead, here:

https://ldjam.com/games/danger/all

The games that are out there still need more ranting to get to final scoring.

And here is progress on my crazy goal of playing 400 games!

B-Game Post Mortem

I've been putting this off for a while, as I suck at reflective writing, but anyway I'll give it a bash.

What went well - Art: using a consistent colour palette across all the sprites, helped the game visuals stay coherent, and from feedback the bright colour scheme seemed to go down well. Definitely the strongest category for me I'd say. - Sound: bleep bloop, functional sound, crammed in at the last hours. - Presentation: I thought the presentation was not bad for the time scale.

What went not-so-well - Gameplay: a bit lacking in the old gameplay, but I wanted something super casual, so I think I achieved that goal. - No tutorial: the game can be a bit confusing for new players. - No flower radar: even though the owl will point to the nearest flower patch it would have been nice to have a mini-map. - Screen resolution: too zoomed in, needed to be further away for the player to get a feel of being able to actually see what they were travelling towards and make it easier to avoid angry clouds.

What next? - Jam revision: I'll take the feedback and make a new build, already one in a github branch if anyone cares to nosy. - Asset Flip into another game: already started this :) using the existing visuals and making it more into a casual game, Match Bee:

Finally!!!!

YIPPPEEE!! Yes, that's true, my game now finally has 20 ratings. Thank you all who voted. This was my very first time in Ludum Dare and also my very first 'international' competition and I was so worried about if I would be able to make a game in 48 hours. But, I did it and here is the result. Again, a special Thanks to all who voted .

Convenience update for final phase of PLAY+RATE

SleepKeeper.gif

Hey guys,

we hope you're all doing fine and are happy with what you've accomplished in this edition of the Ludum Dare jam. We've tested a couple of your creations and are inspired by what wonderful art you all have created. We wanted to make it easier for you to try out our entry of the Ludum Dare 50 jam and therefore made an update, so that 'Sleep Keeper' can now be played in your browser. Lesson learned, if you want to make your game accessible and don't require top notch graphics, don't create a project using the HDRP in Unity :)

Good luck for your entries & keep jamming!

Hi ! I want to comeback on this amazing experience. (And I’m sorry for my terrible english I’m a frenchie)

I’m a 3D animation student and it was my first game jam ( and my first game at all ). Ultimate Mushroom Damoclès Revenger (what a fun name) is a story about a little mushroom in a dark kitchen, fighting against a big knife for his life. He swear, he will not be cook into an omelet ! Never !

I had a looot of fun working on this game. I did the graphics (menus, buttons, illustrations) and designed the characters. The idea was fun, and I was lucky enough to have an amazing team to work with me. I drew them as Mushroom :

3D17826B-9494-4916-A1D7-66B5660B1F6C.png

On the graphics, I wanted to create a creepy / cute / fun atmosphere. I wanted a dark mood with few colorful touches.

I’m quite happy with the game result. Go check our game if you are interested ! We need more returns and we love read feedbacks. As a student, it’s even more interesting for me.

Hello again,

Back to you with some more pixel art from our game Baggy & Maggy !

M.A.D. Post Jam update

Having received a good number (50+, thanks a lot) of reviews, we made a few bug fixes... and added 2 features!

Bug fixes

  1. Audio fixed, where, when lowered in the settings, the effect was still at default volume.
  2. Fixed spawning of additional rioter when loading a game state (e.g. 1v1).

Features

Both new Features are related to one thing: Game modes.

Ever wondered how we managed to include so many game modes?

It's a fairly simple thing: we parameterized most of our things in a JSON file that is loaded on start. Each game mode has it's own set of values that decide how the game is played.

With the new features, every player can tweak all game modes to their liking, even create their own.

*Send them in, we dare you! *

To do so:

Send us a copy & paste of the JSON from the "Editor" to pentaworks@protonmail.com (as attachment, preferably .txt or .json)

Trying some more entries! ROUND 3

Yeah, it took a bit for me to do this again, but I had felt more like playing Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin (so close to having a fully complete save file!). But I'm now back in the mood for playing some of your entries!

Here's the list of games that I played last round:

The End Is Coming

Glide'r Die

Giraffe o'Clock

GRIDLAST

Battery Buisness

And here's a link to my Round 2 post, for another list of entries. Don't post your entry here!

Um, wasn't there something else... Oh yeah! I'm thankful to EVERYONE who's played MY Ludum Dare 50 entry:

Turbo Toilet Tomfoolery!

(sorry about having nothing other that this picture!)

I'm very thankful because my entry's now received enough ratings to be scored! But I'm not going to stop playing entries because MY entry got rated enough; some of you aren't as fortunate, and I'd love to give a helping hand!

Just remember, I give entries A LOT more time than the average of 3 minutes, and I like to be (but am not always) thorough. So be patient after posting your entry link, please! Thanks very much, and have a great day! I know I ~~will~~ might!

Edit: I forgot to add this originally, but post links to your entries in the comments section. Just keep in mind the paragraph above, sorry for any inconveniences!

Please list your game in the comments if, 1. You have rated enough games to have a checkmark by the number and 2. your game hasn’t received enough ratings to get the checkmark there as well

If you don’t fall into BOTH categories, please do not post your game; I don’t care if you only have one rating if you haven’t rated anything yourself, nor do I care if you have 50 ratings. Let’s get as many games over that line that we can, please.

Water physics plugin now available for Godot!

My water physics engine from my LD50 entry "Last Breath" has now been pulled out of the game and made public for any Godot devs to use in their own game!

It is live on Github at https://github.com/adrenallen/WaterMap

It is currently pending approval to the official Godot Asset Library :fingers_crossed:

It allows anyone to quickly add water physics to their game by simply adding a child node to their TileMap! It has a number of configuration options, and I'm looking to expand them now that the v1 release is out!

Check-out this short demo clip

You can also see it in action on my LD50 entry, where you play as a cave explorer evading a flooding cave for treasure!

Play "Last Breath" here!

I'm excited to get some feedback and hopefully allow others to add some fluid water to their own games!

Hey, can you rate my game?

  • Be the smartest child ever by finding each night one more good reason to not sleep: you can play this "Fetching" game with Daddy last all night, but obviously at the end, of course that's DADDY who will have the final say... hope that will happen as late as possible ! 😁👍

Streamers Play "Aloft"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=buOMxvWLGrE

It has been a blast watching people play our tricky balloon piloting game Aloft!

In particular, it has been SUPER cool to see so many players start off initially confused, only to quickly become masters of the air jets by the end of their play session. We knew that the game was going to be tricky with its odd control scheme, but we still wanted the game to be learnable and masterable, rather than just another typical "rage game."

Seeing that happen in real-time on various streams has been a HUGE treat for us, and we wanted to thank everyone who gave our tiny little game a chance.

Wow. I am pleased to announce that Bitboy has reached triple digits. Needless to say, this game never would've gotten as far as it has without the people who came and played it, and discovered what the game truly was through their curiosity. It has been amazing to see the positive response people have had to the game. To everyone who helped Bitboy get this far, thank you.

If you haven't checked out Bitboy yet, I'd appreciate it if you would! I have been working my way through everybody who's rated my game in order to rate theirs.

Important news and some development process

Hi guys. We have important news for you :) After seeing a lot of great comments and feedback, we decided to rebuild our project. Therefore, work on Mister Psychologist 2.0 has already begun. And the second news is that we have a twitter https://twitter.com/shubrium from which you can find out all the news about updated games and follow future projects

and so that you would not be so bored, I will show you the stages of character development (at the end of the spoiler, you will see an improved version that will be included in the new rebuild)

At the first stage, I make a mesh from polygons, then I sculpt Снимок экрана 2022-04-13 135331.png

Then I do a retopology, and since we wanted to keep the low poly style, I do not smooth anything and continue to work with this model Снимок экрана 2022-04-13 135443.png

In these screenshots you can see the finished character that came into the game I just added standard blender materials so as not to complicate the work in the engine untitled1.png untitled2.png

and, the final version that you will see in the game, on the last screenshot, we didn’t want to change anything cardinally, we just added details that we didn’t have enough time for untitleddgd.png

If you liked the post, like and write a comment, as well as subscribe to our twitter and do not forget to play and rate our project, leave comments with your projects and we will also rate them

Mission

The reason that I'm starting a brand new community is because I believe that
everyone should have the right to express their opinions in a respectful way
and everyone else has the right to agree or disagree with that person.

Unfortunately, that is not always the way it goes, and people with the power of
authority/moderation often can't communicate well so they either kick you out or
you have to keep your mouth shut to be a part of such community.

I, Phillip, am strongly against fear-infused threats and anything that kills
people's potential. So, I made my own brand-new community where I can say
whatever I want (as well as everyone else is welcome to) without being judged
or abused by moderator powers without good cause. Ego is the enemy.

Community

The community is strictly for Game Developers (artists, designers, and programmers, etc.)
Everything is still in the construction phase, so please be patient until I set everything up.

Try Again: Narrative Postmortem

title_pm.png

:warning: Try Again is a narrative game, SEVERE spoilers ahead. :warning:

Try Again... Again?

I already wrote a postmortem on my entry a couple of days ago, but I realized I didn't actually dive very deeply into the issues with the most important part of an interactive story: the interactive story.

I am pretty happy with the narrative I wrote. I think it's fairly interesting and engaging, I'm pleased with my writing style as well as the overall arc--with the help of a Feature Film Story Outline Structure I found on openscreenplay.com. So the while story is fine, the issue comes with the interactive part which is the relevant bit that actually makes this a game.

In short: the choices the player gets to make are either superficial or they get the player killed and they loop back to a previous waypoint; a slap on the wrist telling you to make the correct choice instead. Now dying is a story-relevant act as the game has a Groundhog Day vibe going, but it merely affects the player experience of the story, and not the actual direction of things. The choices do not have any real deep impact on the events described.

What Choicery Is This?

I will list each and every choice present in the game. I am leaving out story parts that aren't directly relevant to the choice, but you can imagine these are all :warning: big spoilers. :warning:

Act 1

1. You are hungover - take your last pain killer?

  • If yes, then you do not have a pain killer anymore.
  • If no, then there are several moments that point out your headache in act 1. Also, you can choose to give it to someone else later on. You also get access to choice 3 (see below).

2. You stink - take a shower?

  • If yes, then you are simply clean.
  • If no, then there are four additional little moments where people might comment on your smell.

3. Take a nap before you the apartment?

In case you didn't take the pain killer, if yes, then you cure your headache. If no, then there are a few points during act 1 that comment on your headache.

4. Talk to the occupants of the car?

  • If yes, then you are shot and killed, and loop back to the start. Note: the first time you get to this scene, this is the *only option, meant to introduce the looping Groundhog Day system.*
  • If no, and you choose to pickup the briefcase from the trunk instead, then the story continues. This is one of those slap on the wrist and try again choices.

Act 2

5. Rescue a man from being robbed?

  • If yes, then you are beaten to death by Lethe, and return to the Act 2 waypoint which describes the events of Act 1 without having to go through them again. Your choices in Act 1 are noted in this description.
  • If no, then the man is killed while you persuade Lethe to let you leave. Another slap on the wrist and try again choice.

6. Tell Lethe you are alone?

While Lethe is about to beat you to death, you can tell her you're alone or lie and say there are five more guys. - If yes, then she kills you, calling you dumb. - If no, then she kills you, indicating she doesn't believe you.

7. Your handler calls you - pick up?

  • If yes, then you have a conversation with Zach with no further results.
  • If no, then you skip the call and your handler notes in a later call that you didn't pick up previously. (Fun fact, here is where I accidentally left in the handler's old name, Eddie, by mistake, which I only just noticed now.)

Act 3

8. You approach the drop-off location - tell the bouncer the password?

  • If yes, then he leads you into the building and the story continues.
  • If no, then you get two more chances to choose yes instead or he'll beat you to death, sending you back to the Act 2 waypoint. Another slap on the wrist and try again choice.

9. A mysterious stranger calls you - pick up?

Whether you choose yes or no, the call will happen, there is simply some extra text if you chose not to accept the call. This is meant to show that the stranger, Antediluvian, is a powerful hacker.

10. You've dropped off the briefcase - say goodbye or just leave?

Another meaningless choice that leads to the same next scene, just with an extra line of text explaining it. I added this on the last day of the jam because I felt there were too few choices, but I had no time left to add anything meaningful.

11. Shit is about to go down - wait for the distraction?

  • If yes, then you immediately arrive at choice 12.
  • If no, then you are killed and return to the Act 3 waypoint. Slap on the wrist and try again.

12. They're distracted - grab the gun?

Immediately following choice 11. - If yes, then you shoot a guard and continue the story. - If no, then you are killed and return to the Act 3 waypoint. Slap on the wrist and try again.

13. A woman is in pain - if you have the pain killer, give it to her?

  • If yes, it notes she feels better.
  • If no, then you hang on to it. No other effect. If you do not have the pill, you mentioned that you know what having a headache is like as a callback to the start. This is all the pain killer I established at the very start is good for.

14. The bad guys are coming - buy Antediluvian and the woman some time?

The final choice of the game. - If yes, then they escape. You are killed, but your sacrifice loops you back to the alley where Lethe was killing the homeless man and this time you save him. - If no, you try to escape with them to no avail. They die. You die. Return to the Act 3 waypoint. Slap on the wrist and try again.

In Conclusion, a Conclusion

So this story is essentially not even a branching story. Sure, there are some parts that are different depending on your choice, but there are only a few small moments where you actually get different content from a choice. But they are more fluff in order to paint that specific picture, rather than anything meaningful. The end of the game is determined by the final choice, and earlier choices have no impact on what those choices are.

So why is that? It's two-fold:

  1. This one is simple, and the same answer each Ludum Dare: time. I finished and submitted by the time I really needed to go to bed in order to be sane for the next work day. I told myself to just keep writing, finish the story, and edit later. With that target I then kept things largely linear, being happy with a written section and moving on to the next rather than to something parallel.

  2. The entire try again premise kept me in the mindset of the player going back and fixing what they did wrong previously, and rather than taking a different route earlier in the process before death, it was the choice at your death that makes the change. I had established the pain killer at the very start of the game. I had planned to make it have significant impact on the story (though I didn't yet know how). As I was writing I felt bad if the pill was a defeat/win choice at the very end, and not having it available would be a defeat and you'd have to start all over. I should have made it significant at the end of Act 1 instead, and a fun call back later on.

So that's what I have learned from all this. If I were to do another text adventure at any point, I'll be more aware of the need for actual branching. I'll also need to keep myself from overscoping on the length of the story so I can put more time in the width of it. I should also really read up on branching story writing, because this was all just based on experience from playing games instead of learning to write these things.

If you made it this far down without playing Try Again, then I am sorry for spoiling it, but you were warned! I may have focused on my failures in this postmortem, but that's what these are for. It's still a pretty good story, and I left some characters and scenes out, so it'll still be worth playing. Give it a go, and thank you for reading!

Losing my mind

Today I published my game, after two and a half weeks of banging my head against walls of lacking knowledge. I work as programmer for the banking industry and I am an illustrator... so, silly of me, I thought "Making a game in unity should be easy".

Here I am, finished my first game as programmer. And I didn't wanted to do something easy and simple so I gathered a friend and we together made something... Different.

From the bottom of my heart I hope whoever plays our game have at least a tiny bit of fun. And if you get frustrated,I know you will, just remember: at least we finished it.

See you in LD51. K

Trying some more entries! ROUND ... uh.. 3.5

Okay, so I made a mistake in the previous Round 3 post. I actually forgot to inform people of what to do! I'll do a better job this time.

I'm still very much thankful to those who've rated my Ludum Dare 50 entry:

Turbo Toilet Tomfoolery!

tomfoolery.png

You gotta get to the toilet before you soil yourself! Make it quick! Don’t…. sigh, delay the inevitable!

To be very honest, I'm not very big on the whole "title drop the theme" thing that every frickin' entry seems to do. I'm only doing it here to highlight how it implements the theme; I'd like to see another entry that does so in such a way that isn't just "because."

And: myGifmy.gif

HOLY CRAP! I'M ACTUALLY SHOWING GAMEPLAY!? Yes, I decided to get off my lazy ass and utilize GameMaker: Studio 2's GIF functions to make this, though I did use ezgif to speed up the file. I'm not a fan of how GMS2 rapidly alternates colors on the potted plants and the player's pants, and I doubt there's a solution to this that is not incredibly tedious. I have felt a little bad for not showing anything other than the thumbnail image, and for that I apologize.

But I'm just rambling at this point. Let's get to the real point.

So the idea of all these posts is that you will, uh, post the link to your entry in the comments. Now you may already know that the average Ludum Dare playtime is around 3 minutes, that may even be the maximum. I am so much more generous with playing entries, however. I'd say that I go 15 minutes on an entry, though this may also depend on how good your game is.

Basically, if I take a real long time to get to your game, then clearly you can blame someone else in the comments section for making their game too fun. sarcasm.

I tend to make pretty long comments as well on posts, and it's rare that I don't congratulate someone for their effort. That may sound too positive, and that makes perfect sense, but you all know the Golden Rule. If not, well, Google's your friend (not really)

Apologies about the length of this post; thanks very much to anyone who got through it and posted a link.

How to make an achievement system fast

Baggy & Maggy

One of our goals when making Baggy & Maggy was to include an achievement system: it is a nice feature that is not commonly seen in game jams, therefore could be a very valuable feature for the game. But how to make it fast?

Well, let me show you! Everything was done in C# for Unity, and the whole system took me about 1 hour and 30 minutes to make, a real quick-win for a game jam! After that, actually putting and configuring the actual achievemnets in the game maybe took another hour and a half.

Components

AchievementContainer

AchievementContainer is a class used to store info about all of the achievements in the game. It contains a list of all the achievements, each achievement being described with: * A name, used in the game UI. * A type, as an enum, identifying the achievement. * A description, also used in the game UI.

TutoAchievement1.png

This AchievementContainer is only used by the AchievementManager to display achievement UI elements.

AchievementManager

The AchievementManager is the brain of the AchievementSystem. Any piece of code in the project can access it and ask it to unlock an achievement, and it does the rest. This would be a little bit too permissive for a large-scale project, but a game jam is about saving time, and this is very fast to use.

The role of the AchievementManager is to store all achievements that were unlocked, and to display the achievement notification when an achievement is unlocked.

TutoAchievement2.png

Then, the call flow is pretty easy. Take the example of the GAMER achievement, unlocked when the game is finished: 1. The GameManager detects that the player has reached the end of the game. 1. It calls the AchievementManager to make it unlock the GAMER achievement. 1. The AchievementManager checks that the GAMER achievement has not been unlocked (we'll see just next how that would be possible). 1. As the GAMER achievement was never unlocked, the AchievementManager registers it as unlocked, and display the achievement panel to notify the player. 1. At the end of the game, the ending screen will ask the AchievementManager for a list of all unlocked achievement to show the player how he did.

ZoneAchievementTriggerer

The AchievementManager can be unlocked as explained before, or via a ZoneAchievementTriggerer, simple object that triggers an achievemnet when it touches the player.

TutoAchievement3.png

The ZoneAchievementTriggerer object can simply be configured with a specific AchievementType, and triggers it via the AchievementManager when touched by the player.

Tips

  • Have a very generic base system, then make as many achievements and ways to trigger them as you want. When the base is built, everything is fast to make and adds a lot of fun to the game.
  • Make the list that stores unlocked achievements static, so that everything is kept when the game is restarted.
  • Secundary features like the achievement system are very forgettable when you make a game. When you decide that you want achievements in your game, let it be one of the first things you develop. Then, you can add as many achievements as you can think of throughout the jam. If you plan to make the achievement system at the end of the jam, it is more than likely that you will prioritize other things and never do it. I tell you that because it happened during my last jam.

I hope that I helped you with this post, and if you want to see the Achievement System in action, come and try Baggy & Maggy!

A favorites section, please!

I knew Ludum Dare for years and years and this is the first one I actively participate. I've to say that I love the community and meet both new and legend developers.

However, there're games that for me are hidden gems and I'd like to have a favorites section so I can see, play and enjoy them.

It's a wish, I understand that carrying LD and add a new feature is complicated. Just to thank all the participants and all those who make this possible!

Why does Caterpillar exist? - A postmortem

The short and simple answer to this article's title is: during Ludum Dare 49 I said I would come back for Ludum Dare 50, and I did not want to look like a liar (instead I look a bit unstable to people who played Caterpillar).

The longer answer is: originally the game was to revolve around managing a caterpillar searching for food. Over time the caterpillar's hunger bar would empty, and if allowed to completely deplete the caterpillar would starve. As the caterpillar ate food their size would increase, once reaching a certain size the caterpillar would turn into a chrysalis ending the game. The longer the player stayed a caterpillar the higher their score. To get a higher score the player would avoid eating for as long as possible, and this would be complicated by needing to look for food while outmaneuvering various hazards. I also planned on saving time by taking photos of my garden for the game's art.

Sadly, it was raining during the jam which prevented me from taking quality photos of my garden, this also caused me to not have time to flush out the gameplay. To met the deadline I decide to go in the interactive story direction, and to fix the photo quality I edited them to be weird and surreal.

With the title answered let us move on to the much more interesting question of what I learned while making Caterpillar.

A wild listicle appears!

Alright guys, let's count down the eleven things I learned during Ludum Dare 50.

Side note: the points are roughly laid out in the order that I learned them.

1. Set reminders for important events, preferably a week or two before they start.

By not doing this I had three days to prepare for Ludum Dare 50 instead of the week I wanted.

2. Do not fixate on themes.

I had several favorites out of the possible themes for Ludum Dare 50, and “Delay the inevitable” was not one of them. I ended up making a game more suited to the themes I wanted rather than the actual theme. For a way to help prevent this see point 4.

3. Be proactive before and during the jam.

A few days before Ludum Dare 50 started I decided to use photos of my garden for the game's art, but if I had quickly tested this idea out I would of realized that this was not an easy task. Consistently getting the correct angles and distance would require a lot of time (which I did not have), and taking good photos of moving insects is difficult. Five minutes of testing would have shown all this.

4. Try out multiple ideas.

My concern with trying multiple ideas was that I would get stuck never committing, but I believe that the benefits outweigh the risks. For example, Caterpillar was something I came up with before the theme was announced, and I believe if I had taken the time to come up with an idea that had the winning theme in mind the game would have turned out better.

5. Pivot.

In one way I did this, and in another way I did not. When I saw that my garden photos were not going to work I edited them to a new style, but replacing the photos with drawings probably would of worked better.

6. A game that looks boring is worse than a game that looks uniquely ugly.

While Caterpillar's art may look weird it is better than the disjointed normal looking original photos, or as a friend put it, “No one notices my poor photoshopping skills because I make weird-interesting things.”

7. Avoid unnecessary yak shaving[¹].

Because I should of used a version control system during Ludum Dare 49 I spent the first day of Ludum Dare 50 learning the basics of and setting up Fossil[²]. I ended up never using it due to Ludum Dare's short deadline preventing me from working more cautiously.

8. Make your game discoverable.

indicator.png I was reluctant to highlight interactive NPCs; because, I did not want to ruin the player's immersion, but when playtesting I realized the player had no way of knowing what to do. This meant the easiest way for the player to finish the game was mashing the interact button on everything. The convenience of highlighting NPCs far outweighed any loss in immersion.

9. Having sound effects greatly improves your game.

As the following video shows even simple sound effects can significantly improve game feel.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFbcP3cFZlU

10. Deadlines help keep you on track.

Something that I have struggled with is getting stuck endlessly reading documentation, guides, and tutorials which prevents me from making actual progress. Having a deadline forces me to learn enough to be productive without getting bogged down.

11. The fastest way to improve the quality and development speed of your games is practice.

Practice makes perfect, and game jams make for great practice. Just remember that practice means plenty of missed deadlines and less than stellar games.

Yet another update

Zombies now fall faster and climb slower, so it looks a little nicer when you smash them. The hitboxes are adjusted as well, so now zombies do not kill you from seemingly very far away. When smashing, the player now jumps a little bit. And the last change: high score is saved locally between runs and shown on death.

If you want to play the game without those changes to rate it properly, there are additional links marked (Jam). If you want to try the game with latest changes, use links with (Latest) mark.

The Game

Unapocalyptic is a survival-clicker where your objective is to survive as long as possible during a zombie apocalypse, nuclear war and survive during a meteorite fall.

Sloppy slopes, bring me cone...

Hi, Ardskape here.

As sloppy as our game is based on slopes with Snaker Goose riding his tire away from Muss Moose to get that ice cone 'fore it hits the ground, we derived our levels from the photos of real slopes of early spring in dawning countryside of Karelian regions.

We could sketch or texturize, aye, but our twisted minds wished for some real F* action. So, we shot (as in photo) like 20 of slopes, then managed to get 5 best playable.

Some were of a poor quality, however felt cool to play through. Yet, with the 3d level slope we had troubles with physics. We wanted You to control the environment, not the characters of this story - wacky bit - like many said. So we had to put an air bag that helps Goose to jump over the first icicle. Which, relevantly corresponded to the idea of him riding a tire.

Being artists, we challenged ourselves to some real coding and got many things done, however we wanted the obstacles to be clicked separately. Alas, hadn't got enough time.

Still, we believe, the story, the art, the kiddo-like rhymes, the pace and the fun points worked fine even for this kind of pretentious unpolishness, polished for the playable memento.

Thanks for getting to F*ick our minds!

We do play and rate in return, and if you think your idea is quite wacky yet underestimated, do comment, we'll come with mussy expertise;).

See you to the end of LD50! And further.

Get into the real fast cone chase with Goose and Moose in Cussmuss!

P.S.

What's with the ice cone and the tension of the final level - next.
