I didn't have an idea for this theme!
Shoot! This was one of the themes that I didn't have an idea for! Now what am I going to do?

My idea list...

Ah
Well, I've got my Rock N' Roll, my idea which was planned more around plants but I think I can rework to the theme, and the usual amount of panic.
...Seriously, like half my plans were based on plants and crime for "Connections" and "Tunnels". The idea for inevitable was from a friend and I'm gonna damn well thank him when I see him next cause I have no ideas beyond this.
I for one am struggling with this theme, I really like it, but I can't think of any ideas... xD
Interesting theme! Many participants in the Discord have been saying that survival's the best suited-genre for this theme, but since I'm using an Action RPG game engine, I could probably bring up "resource-gathering-before-doomsday-or-price-inflation" vibe here.
I also brainstormed a "too much money will kill you, so you try to spend it all" blurb.
At the moment, I'm leaning closer to a resource/treasure gathering action RPG where you're getting stuff (gems, food, etc.) or a time-based doomsday action RPG.
don't stay on the topic of death...

I just finished watching the keynote. And well, I've lost 30 minutes as a result, but I'm doing the Jam category this time, so I can have a more relaxing experience after my previous 2 compos.
But now I have to come up with ideas... crap!
Wouldn't you say lots of things are inevitable in your childhood? Thinking back, I remember trying to stay up and play my NDS back when I was a kid as long as possible trying not to be caught. Maybe I could recreate a similar feeling in this game jam!
Maybe share some ideas in the comment with fellow your fellow jammers to see if they can brew some idea through these memories. I hope to see inevitable games based more around naughty childhood behaviours!
I purposefully didn't look at the theme suggestions, and wow. Cool theme but I had no ideas, until NOW!
I was gonna code my own engine but now I'm going to use this as an excuse to learn react javascript, because idk
Me and my homie are streaming our game of the year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KZ5DjHSzNo
Scary theme I must admit. But hey things unavoided happened in our life and discouraged us sometimes. At the end we were able to face and stand strong. That kind of things cycle, repeat wtih or without delay. Wait... did I say cycle? Ah yes there must be something with cycle to overcome unevitable situation.

My 21st LD. Still sticking to my "No beer while jamming" rule though.
I'll use Unity again. A while back I posted my base code on github as an importable package. The main things I use from it are the extension methods for Rigidbody2D, some sound-library management, and the FXTrigger thing which is is handy for cramming in screenshake and sound triggers in the final 30 minutes in a wild fury: https://github.com/pckenney/ScrambleKit
Good luck to everyone participating, and have fun. Looking forward to trying your games.

So, My sister is coming over tomorrow to take pictures of her baby with my rabbits (well my wife's rabbits, but still). So, I have to get this going! I decided to go into the jam with ZERO themes/ideas, and only started thinking once it turned 9pm. So, I have an idea now, and since this is only my second project in this engine (and third game PERIOD), I am going with something that I know I can PROABLY do in only 48 hours: an art heavy game with minimal music or complex mechanics. We all gotta start somewhere! Im gonna be lucky to finish on time :p
Personally I think we should make the effort to get away from the "someone's going to steal my idea" idea, since it'll probably look like a very different game in the end regardless so,
Here's my few ideas, feel free to steal them and I'd love to hear yours: - Using outdated tech, trying to figure out when to keep improving the old model vs upgrading to something new - Anything Tower Defence - Game based around recycling items - Committed a crime, delay going to prison - Building machines/units with a specific strat in mind, how long can you reuse them without buying fresh ones - Walking sim, explore different mental nodes to find the character motivation, find a mental dead end and they give up and collapse from exhaustion - Horror game about keeping a fire alive in the cold
I didn't see this in the rules. But, what is the limits for mature content? Cursing, alcohol use, blood, gore, etc? I couldn't find it in the rules, and I get a 404 for https://ludumdare.com/rules/
Is anything Adult/Mature a big no no, or is there some limits to the area you can go?
Cross-posted at my website: https://www.gbgames.com/2022/04/01/ld50-the-theme-is-delay-the-inevitable-ldjam/
The Ludum Dare compo has started, and the theme has been announced.
I am trying to remember if "Delay the Inevitable" was a theme I submitted, but I can't seem to determine if that information is available.
My plan is to spend the first hour or so coming up with ideas. During Ludum Dare, there is usually an obvious idea that many people might try to pursue, so digging a little bit deeper should result in something more unique.
I just finished watching West Side Story (2021), so the inevitable violence and death that prevents two lovers from being together is top of mind.
Death is inevitable for all of us, and so delaying death might be one of the obvious ideas, but even so it seems like it could be a rich vein.
Taxes are also inevitable, but meh.
And in some areas people might argue that construction is inevitable. A game about constantly fixing roads? So are you delaying the construction, or is the construction delaying the entropy?
"Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!" That line from Firefly is classic, and perhaps a game could be built around the idea of joining forces with an enemy that you know is going to target you once your common foe has been defeated or problem has been solved.
Climate change is feeling inevitable. Perhaps a game about being a representative of a corporation trying to convince people that climate change is a personal responsibility despite that corporation being directly responsible for most of the greenhouse gases.
The expansion of the universe seems unending and ultimately results in heat death. I remember learning that Newton's math, pre-relativity, didn't actually work, as it predicted that the planets would spin out of orbit. Or was it Kepler? Either way, he suggested that it was God's hand that was keeping everything in place. So perhaps a game about keeping celestial bodies in place by manually (and frantically) putting them back when they go where they aren't supposed to. Maybe you start with the Earth-Moon system, then branch out into the solar system, then into the galaxy, etc. Might be a math/physics heavy project. But maybe it will be more enjoyable if the physics was a hand-rolled hack job anyway.
Looking at the time, I see almost an hour has passed. Eep! I want to think a bit more before deciding.
"Delay the inevitable" is too broad. I need a cue, a restriction, something to start with other than a blank page. Help me here! xD
Nothing so far. No game ideas, no title, no genres, or styles-
But I absolutely cannot wait to hop into another LudumDare
Good luck and I hope everyone learns some useful new skills!
