Engine Progress!

I'm happy to say that my engine is coming along nicely! It's almost got all of the required functionality so I can start focusing on the game I am actually going to make.

The engine can be found at: https://github.com/haxx0rm4n/ldbb

I created a sample game in the process of developing the engine, a simple Etch-a-Sketch clone; this can be found in the engine's repository.

Concept? Lock in!

Instead of trying to come up with an off-the-wall interpretation of the theme - this time I decided to just make a straight-forward game. Hopefully it still turns out to be fun.

I did a bit of art tonight so I can enjoy the mechanics programming tomorrow, but now I need to sleep so I can put some good energy into programming tomorrow. Hopefully I don't regret getting some basic art out of the way rather than basic mechanics. That sounds a bit backwards to how people usually recommend things.

Hope you all are doing as well (or better) than I am. Good luck on the development!

Brainstorming

Finished my Brainstorming and started to code, honestly the theme was my least favorite of all the final ones, but I think it will work out.

I think I'm going with Death for a Day as it seems to be the easiest to create and while I have joined three jams before I have never actually finished one, though it is admittedly the least interesting theme.

basic idea is a turnbased/gridbased puzzle game where you move around a map and reap souls while staying out of line of site of other reapers (hopefully time to create multiple types with different mechanics).

Ideas for 'Delay the Inevitable' theme

  • Turn based strategy game where every map would eventually end in defeat, but you can retreat after gathering what resources you can, resources to use on the next map. Think FTL x Into the Breach.
  • Shop manager sim (think Recettear X Stardew Valley?), where the ever increasing loan payments will eventually bankrupt you and force you to sell the shop, keep your dream alive as long as possible.
  • Dystopic future where most people are plugged into a matrix style sim by choice. Try to hold out and live in the real world for as long as possible. Life sim where certain activities increase your happiness meter, if the meter hits zero you give up and join the VR world. Items break after so many uses so you will always give up in the end.
  • You are the evil lord and the prophecy foretells of you fall. You cannot avoid the prophecy but perhaps it can be delayed. How?
  • Evil Empire Management sim (Might be same as above). Every thing passes, even the Eternal Empire which has cast it's shadow over the world for as long as any can remember. You must ensure the hero never arises to overthrow your rule, by ensuring all citizens of your empire are content so none see themselves as the hero of legend. Build Schools and well funded Orphanages, etc to keep anyone from having a backstory tragic enough for them to become the hero.
  • Death comes for us all, he cannot be avoid, he cannot be outrun, but he can be bargained with.
    • Do deaths job for him, each day you complete his tasks in time you get to live for another day, but you can't let the other reapers catch on. (This may be the easiest idea to create during jam, could be turn based puzzle game.)
    • The price is high to stay the hand of death and it grows high with each day.
  • Card battler where you start with your whole deck, go for a high score and see how many opponents you can beat before you lose or run out of cards.
  • Nature vs Industry, delay the inevitable march of progress.

Fast Prototype #1

Not sure if we pick it though.

Prototyping with Tabletop Simulator!

Our best game idea for this theme so far is a card game, and so it was pretty easy to use Tabletop Sim to quickly prototype and playtest some simple mechanics.

A card game has a lot of design challenges that we didn't have in previous jams, but I'm excited to see what we can make.

First update, followed shortly by sleep

I've got my central idea figured out, and I've got some of my basic IO stuff coming together. Gonna sleep on it now, as I had less than 4 hours sleep last night and a very stressful day, and I'll pick things back up in the morning. Here's a little teaser gif before I publicly reveal what my game is about:

some freebie game ideas if you're feeling stuck

some unused game ideas from brainstorm. if you feel stuck trynna think up an idea, maybe these will at least help get you started!

1. Platformer: using some sort of pipes to drain a constantly rising water level 2. Avoid a giant wall of mouthy creature things by throwing food at them, to which they will swarm, eat, then descend on you instead, until you throw more food. Could be platformer or topdown?

i thought they were decent so im happy to share since im not usin em

:point_right: and if you decide to use one, definitely tag me or link the game to me when its posted! id really love to see your spin on the idea

Prototype tile placement working!

I've decided to go with a city builder (hopefully I don't abandon it 24 hours in like I did in LD49 lol) but this time with the twist it's happening on a sphere instead of a normal 2d grid. I was able to write a shader in Unity that can warp a 3D model to fit the exact footprint of the tile. This way I can (hopefully) avoid the alignment artifacts one would normally run into when tiling a sphere.

Nice Theme

I was all prepared to make a folklore game as well haha. Anyway, I'm awake, so my design document in full:

B-Game

You are a B.

Summer is here.

Winter is there.

Do B stuff to prepare.

No guns, just cosy gameplay. Let's a go!

nope nope nope nope nope

Almost 4 hours in and I'm a mile away from an idea I could get rolling with. There are a few threads that might be compelling but none of them are developed enough to start design or development.

I've been around the LD block a bunch of times and this ain't the first time I haven't had an idea on Friday night, but it never feels great.

Gonna sleep on it and see if anything inspires me to get running in the morning.

Maybe if I delay the inevitable sleep I can finish this (:

Its like Loop Hero + Slay the spire, where you will build and use a deck of challenges to create your hero's journey, until you will have to use the inevitable Dragon boss card, hoping that you got strong enough in the way.Screenshot_629.png

let’s gooooooo

working through our very first ludum dare w/ @riley9 ! let‘s see how this goes

I appear to have some kind of game...

I thought I was going to have to tack on the theme after the fact, but mechanically it appears the optimal thing is to delay the inevitable giant blob of color =) Recording 2022-04-01 at 22.05.33.gif

Progress is being made!
