The Last of Ants Bug Fixes

In this new version of the game, I fixed several bugs that were found while testing during the early stages of the JAM:

  • Fixed a collision issue where spamming the spawn button caused the ants to overlap and get stuck.

  • Fixed an error in the HUD where it wasn't updating in real time.

  • Fixed an issue where the ants got stuck after killing an enemy.

  • Fixed an issue with the button that allowed the player to buy infinite larvae without losing any money.

  • Fixed a bug where the buttons would start the match on cooldown.

  • Fixed the text in the Credits HUD that wasn't displaying our names completely.

You can play and test the new version by downloading the "The Last of Ants Improved.zip". If you prefer to play the older version to see the bugs, you can download "The Last of Ants.zip".

Gunpoint Sojourners

This is my entry for this ludum dare, Gunpoint Sojourners.

With the ukraine war and the palestinian genocide I've been thinking a lot about war lately. Now there's the expansion of the conflict into Lebanon and it doesn't look like things are going to stop anytime soon.

There is a lot of media out there that covers these events in a completely dehumanising way. It feels normal. The stories are cold. The data is just numbers.

So I've crystallized my emotions into this tiny experience. It's about normal people.

I hope you like it.

Horseless Headman and Manless Horsehead

Can I make it any more obvious?

Separader.png SH1_v3.gif Separader.png

Hello everyone!

We are SwanBoat, a team of 2 working on our first game jam together!

For this Ludum Dare we made an arcade slash-em-up game about a Manless Horse and a Horseless Man teaming up to take on a Kingdom of chess pieces.

In Horseless Headman you run, jump and dash through waves of enemies, while slashing them with your peerless companion, the steed of steel: Manless Horsehead. It would mean the world to us if you could check it out!

We are both finishing out some stuff we put aside for the sake of the Jam, but we are excited to check all the other amazing games everyone made!

Cellular automata as a game mechanic

That was the initial idea and it looked cool right away. Pynkanids almost ready to eat the galaxy

Hey commUnity! I took the inspiration for this edition's entry from w40k's favourite bugs - but inverted the role. You play as the (tiny, but deadly) swarm of pink creatures that eat everything on their way. The game turned out pretty nice, with quite a challenge in the last level.

Apart from the shameless self-promotion, I have a technical question: I finally managed to get a web build going, but unfortunately it doesn't work here, only on itch.io. The loading bar is at 100% but the game does not launch. Anyone facing a similar issue?

Bonamouse: La Revolucion Francheese - A post mortem

The theme really kicked our asses, we brainstormed for about 2-3 hours before we started working on the idea, with day one going mostly towards systems and concept art. Btw, the entire idea was cemented by this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=deWu8CWiGos

48 hours in, we still didn’t have a playable prototype, but we told ourselves we’ll have it by mid-day 3. Of course, we had something by mid-day 3, but as with all crunch time, bugs started appearing here and there.

We fell in and out of love with Godot, but eventually, we managed to have the build in the last minutes of the Jam (with some game breaking issues when changing scenes, but we managed to patch those also. We still have some nasty bugs, but hopefully we’ll be able to fix them between work calls.

Thanks to everyone in the team who worked their asses off, with an average of about 10 hours of sleep per person during the 72 hours of the jam.

Thank you LD56!

Post observations on Super Antbox

SuperAntbox2024-10-0815-06-38-Trim-ezgif.com-optimize.gif

Play Super Antbox!

Im happy that I've finally put something out, since I've been stuck in prototype limbo for a good year. This game has some interesting aspects, but clearly shows some hasty flaws.

Approach on design and visuals

My plan was to make a diorama-like game, that takes a lot of visual and design cues from Gamecube era Sega games, as an example Skies of Arcadia Legends and Super Monkey Ball. I'm such a fool for level based games and this approach worked flawlessly, letting the skybox do the heavy lifting and subtract all maps as a floating cutouts. I'm really happy how visually coherent this became and how fun it was to work on it.

The opening screen is definitely one of my favorites, showing that era-specific lightness and optimism. I found out that it needed some movement, so I reused the asset placement randomizer and made it loop top to bottom. chefs kiss

Design through theme

Tiny creatures clearly meant point-of-view for me, so it was somewhat natural to make something that resembles diorama. Anything can look tiny based on the perspective. I thought about it overnight and my mind was set on multiple creatures - which means traffic - which led to controlling the traffic. I had some thoughts about HUMANITY, game revolving around leading crowds, but i wanted to steer away from grid base , so I came up with suggesting path changes to ants.

It was all fairly straight forward, until it became apparent that hivemind isnt a simple task to imitate. I went with Navmesh solution, gave the ants some incentives to find new waypoints and tested for a solid day. There was always something bugging me, ants heading back to visit newly found locations, getting stuck in traffic and many other issues. At the end I settled with one path that ants update together, but keep their own until respawn.

Last design changes like ants lifting the crumbles, came just few hours before deadline. Same time I started implementing the logic behind feromone tracks, but simplified it to single locations. Sadly the predictability of ants and paths didn't become clear or easy to understand, so I kept this sandboxy in many senses. No tutorial, no explanations, just experimenting.

Cleaning ants logic and making the interaction more readable would make it quite an interesting game with unique gameplay.

This game really hits me personally with the aesthetics, overall feeling and gameplay. I'm having serious urges to develop it more, create more ant varieties, enemies and different obstacles. How do you think? Would love to hear some thoughts and how you've felt about it!

Thank you for reading!

Jelly Gang

How it went?

It's done! As always, there wasn't enough time, but the Jelly Gang is finished and playable. I originally wanted to enter the Compo, but I only managed to squeeze in a few hours of work over Saturday and Sunday. Fortunately, Monday was much more productive, so I was able to submit the game for the Jam.

Movie_012.gif

Game

I've always wanted to create a game where you control multiple small creatures, but I struggled to find new and interesting controls for it. This time, I finally figured it out! You use the mouse to hover over a group of creatures, and from there, you can control them like in a regular platformer. There’s also a twist—one of the creatures is bigger, and the camera follows them. So, you'll need to figure out how to navigate through levels without leaving anyone behind.

Music

I didn’t have time to make any music or sound effects, so I reached out to my friend Josh just 30 minutes before the deadline. He came through with something super quick—and it works! :)

For this jam, we went with the idea of fleas carrying stones to build a bridge so they can reach the other side, but unfortunately, the weather is not on their side. We hope you enjoy the game! And feel free to give us feedback!

Yay! The server for the Club Penguin clone I made for this jam hasn't shattered!

The server continues to be online! It's been kinda hard to get ratings on this game due to server downtime, but if the server is running when you find this post, please go take a look at The Seeds Restaurant and give the game a rating!

Chat with birds! Eat seeds!

It will probably be empty when you join, though. If so, tell some friends to join! Send me screenshots of that later!

Changed the cover art of our game!

Old version: AntServicePoster.png New version: newcover1.png

The title of the game was often covered be the UI of the website, so I decided to change it and spice it up a little!

3rd Ludum Dare, First game finished

cover.png

What's that ? A finished game ? This is the third LD that I am doing, and the first one where we actually submit a finished game ! Needless to say that it is very satisfying. I guess I won't be seeing slugs the same way now. If you love slugs, want to love slugs, or just like throwing them, come try Slug Sprooch !

We survived XD

Hello world, we survived another LD jam! WOOT WOOT

This time around we made a cosy little story game where you have a fun journey with our lil' potato

On things that don't matter

Have you spend more time than necessary for an almost useless feature ? Welcome to the club.

In Patchonomicon, our game about sewing little creature together, you place these little patch of cloth together and try to get the currect shape and color. But placing them on top of one-another wasn't enough, i wanted to add the stitch pattern.

And here i go, spending multiple hours to implement this.

First i'll add another sprite renderer to each shape, with a transparent white texture on a special layer. A dedicated camera record this layer and stores the result into a texture. transparency1.png

Then, we added another sprite renderer to store the stitch pattern of each shape with a custom shader to mask the texture based on the white level of the transparency texture. As the transparency texture is ... transparent ... when multiple shape are place on top of one-another, the intersection of the two is brighter on the transparency texture. We can now use the transparency texture to mask the stich pattern, after figuring out how to do the translation from world space position to UV on the transparency texture using the camera render size & position ...

Here the result: stitch.png

It doesn't look bad but it would be great if the shapes were bigger than 1cm ... :face_palm:

Anyway, come play our game :) banner.png

We’d love your ratings and comments! As newbie developers, your feedback means the world to us 🥺.

If you have a game to share, feel free to comment—I’d love to try it out and will happily rate and comment back!Untitled video - Made with Clipchamp.gifUntitled video - Made with Clipchamp (3).gifps from Yanran and Junyi: This is our first game jam together! We met at summerschool in July as complete beginners. It’s been an intense experience—we spent the first day brainstorming (and panicking) and kind of banged out the entire game in the remaining time (phew) It’s far from perfect, but it’s truly special to us.

Hope you enjoy our game!! and we wish you the very best with everything in your life too :D

Postmortem of smolBIZNASS

smolBIZNASS_black.png

Hello, Ludum Dare!

This is my fourth time participating in the jam, and I have to admit, it was a bit more challenging than usual. Honestly, I was expecting a different theme. I already had an idea for a game, which I was planning to adapt to any theme, but, as often happens in life, plans don’t go as expected, haha

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wr3FVtEKIMA

So I spent the whole of Saturday thinking, trying to come up with a new idea. I know a lot of people recommend not spending more than a couple of hours on brainstorming and just going with the first idea that comes to mind. But that’s not my case. It seems to me that the first ideas that come up are often too cliché and uninspiring. I’d rather do nothing than work on something I don't believe in or find interesting. If I don’t believe in an idea myself, it’s unlikely that the players will, either. I’m just not one of those who do something for the sake of doing it.

Almost immediately after the theme was announced, I got an idea about gnomes—garden gnomes, to be precise. Here’s what my short list of ideas looked like:

  1. A stealth action game about a gnome stealing penises (part of internet folklore, haha).
  2. A game about an isekai protagonist reincarnated as a tiny creature.
  3. A horror game where you need to appease a little house spirit living in the hero’s house. The main feature would be a second-person camera (from the house spirit’s perspective). But I quickly realized it would be hard to make this game genuinely scary.
  4. A game where dwarves break into a wizard’s house and start digging right in the apartment.

None of these ideas really grabbed me, but after combining the best elements from all of them, I ended up with what I have now. Since I’m not much of a 3D artist or animator, I also had to work within the limits of the assets I had available. Here was the idea:

The main character accidentally signs a micro-contract, and micro-businessmen invade his home and start taking his belongings. However, there was still the issue of defining victory and defeat. What was the player supposed to do beyond just retrieving their things? So, Saturday was entirely spent thinking about the core idea.

On Sunday, I finally started working on the core mechanics. As it often happens with Unreal Engine, you spend more time tweaking settings and trying to optimize performance than actually working on gameplay, haha. The whole day was spent setting up AI for the gnomes and trying to add IK so they would amusingly raise their hands when carrying objects (sure, I could have just done a simple animation, but why do that?!).

smolembiznass (64-bit Development PCD3D/emSM6) 2024-10-08 00-48-52.mp4emsnapshot/em01.40.739.png

I left the most exciting part—retrieving items and the main character’s “work” mechanic—for Monday. Initially, I wanted the player to constantly focus on the computer while tiny businessmen would slowly steal his belongings when he wasn’t looking. The businessmen wouldn’t steal while you’re watching them, but the boss on the Zoom call would constantly demand your attention.

However, time was running out, and I still hadn’t worked out the win/loss conditions. Then it hit me: the tiny businessmen are collectors! And the main character is a debtor who took out a micro-loan (a loan for a small sum with huge interest rates). This MICRO-loan fit the jam’s theme “Tiny Creatures” perfectly. It’s just a small loan, but the consequences are enormous—tiny businessmen invade the hero’s life like an army of mini-collectors and start taking everything they can. To pay off the debt, the hero has to complete tasks on his computer. He’s living in a tiny windowless apartment because he’s hiding from the “micro” collectors. It all came together!

smolBIZNASS-MiniTrailer-ezgif.com-optimize.gif

The thing I liked the most was the computer mechanic. It was my first time implementing text input, and it was really fun. I wanted to add more absurd tasks, but time was running short, so I had to stick with similar ones, though I did try to make them as varied as possible.

The sounds and effects, as usual, were added at the last minute, which is why they feel a bit rough. Sorry about that!

In the end, I’m very happy with how it turned out. Big thanks to everyone participating in Ludum Dare! It’s always a blast with you!
