Ludum Dare 49 October 1–4, 2021

Excited For My 4th Ludum Dare! || How Are You Approaching The Jam?

Obligatory 'I'm In!' Post! & Question For Jammers

This is my 4th Ludum Dare, and 7th game jam in total. I've tried approaching jams a few different ways, such as going in with something I want to achieve (like procedural animation), challenging myself to make something that feels really polished/complete, or just winging it.

I'm curious, how do you approach Game Jams and are you trying anything new for this one?

Let's discuss!

Let’s Bring The Community To Twitter - We should all follow each other!

One part of Ludum Dare I really enjoy is the community around it. Comment your handle and we should all follow each other on Twitter! I can’t wait to see what you make.

I’m Tom, and you can find me on Twitter here:

1 day to get started!!!

Hello everyone! i can't wait to start Ludum Dare 49, this will be my second time in the competition!

(I've already participated 3 times if you count the game that unfortunately I didn't post in time)

I hope everyone has the chance to participate, because this is a unique experience!

Good luck to everyone!

I'm in - and a pro tip for theme voting

After sitting out the last two, I'm in for 14th go around at Ludum Dare. Toolchain is same as it ever was:

  • Engine: Unity 20whatever.whatever
  • IDE: VSCode
  • Graphics: Adobe Photoshop
  • Sound: Cockos REAPER, Chiptone, some synths and guitar
  • Source Control: GitHub

Now that we're in the final round of theme voting, I wanted to share a lesson I've learned from 13 Ludum Dares: when you're voting on themes, don't just think about what it will be like to make a game, but also what it will be like to play 100 other games using the same theme.

A good theme isn't an instruction, or a rule, or a gameplay mechanic. A good theme is a creative prompt.

My LD38 project Zen World is releasing on Steam in a week!

It's a relaxing strategy about building a world from hexagonal tiles. Check it out on Steam and wishlist if you like it! logo_1240x429.png

Features:

Build path for your scouts to collect the loot boxes patheml.gif Place special buildings to help expand your kingdom armies.gif Reveal the hidden lanscape underneath the clouds clouds/ems.gif

I am excited to finally make one of my LD games into a full release, I hope you will like the game too!

Second attempt

Last jam didn’t quite work out but I’ve got a better feeling about this one. I’ll be creating a game in unity with the yankiest “art” I can’t wait to get started!

We're In!

My wife, a friend and I will be participating again! We last competed in LD46 and had a great time. Hoping to have just as much fun this time around!

Tools: - Monogame - Aseprite - StudioOne 4 - assorted VSTs

I've learned a lot more about Monogame since last time so excited to get stuck in!

Finding Ideas

Just thought I'd be curious as to how other come up with ideas based on the themes in the final voting round. I myself try to come up with at least two concepts per theme, just so I have ideas on the table even if I conjure up an idea when the theme is announced.

Do you prepare for a theme and if so how do you find your ideas?

Or do you prefer chaos and decide at the hour of the theme announcement to decide game to make?

Grumpy pirate, arrrr!

Just another quick modeling warm up before a jam...

Will likely give it a go

Hi,

I have done several Ludum Dares in the past (I think the first I did was LD23), most were using quickly hacked together 2D engines. This time I want to use my old 3D engine that I made several years ago and see if I can make a fun game with it. As usual, my game will use some sort of AI (with reinforcement learning).

Tools: - neovim (editor) - PGE (parallel game engine, the old 3D engine I made) - AOgmaNeo (super fast online/incremental learning AI software) - Audacity (audio) - Gimp (textures) - Blender (3D modeling) - OS: BTW (linux, will compile a windows version as well though)

My engine is currently ready for horror-type games, so depending on the theme it might be pretty moody looking. I don't really develop games anymore, I research AI, but I find it nice to take a weekend to make a game from time to time - especially if I can justify it by using the AI!

Rules about pre-made shader code

Hi ! I'm curious. I'm trying to learn toon shaders for Unity, and I wonder if it's something I'll have to redo from scratch (as it's art-related) or can just copy and paste directly (as it's just some basic shader code found in tutorials on youtube) ?

Totteri is back!

We are joining again! And this time we brought some guests. Hanna404 and TheDovah will be handling graphics and backend code, respectively.

Some of you may have tried our previous game, "Hello, User." This time we will challenge ourselves to achieve higher ratings than our previous projects, while also participating in the Audio category with original audio and music.

We are looking forward to getting started, and also to play some awesome games!

You can follow our progress on our Twitter, where we also will highlight others' projects that we appreciate a little extra!

Joining the jam for the first time

Helloo, I just wanna say I'll do my best at the event, and I'll stream most of the time while making the game. I invite everyone to the live (https://www.twitch.tv/tailsgamedev), and there you can also get the link to our nice Discord community. I often stream in brazilian portuguese but I'd love to chat in english too ;D Let's make the games happen!

Ready to rock!

In for my fifth compo, always my favorite time(s) of year. So excited to play all the great games the community comes up with. Hope everyone has a great weekend jamming.

Here we go!

Well, I feel way less prepared than I did in April.. but you know what.. LET'S GO!

wasn't gonna participate this year, but

i am easily swayed by seeing members of a school club discord choosing to participate so hopefully this can be a successful attempt at seeing the jam through for a third time!

Last minute prep.Pygame!

Well, the parts of my engine that will not be ready are going to be replaced by ye olde pygame. Lets hope I can finish something in this jam!
