It's that time again.
The final hours of overconfidence and high motivation before the first struggling with the theme. Love it!!
The final hours of overconfidence and high motivation before the first struggling with the theme. Love it!!
My heart already started beating insane....
And it's first one too...
Feeling excited, prepared, nervous? None or all of those?
This is my first jam ever. I just woke up - it's still dark outside and very early morning in Denmark - and now I can't fall asleep. I'll probably be super tired tonight when jam starts. Haha!
I'm in! This will be my 30th Ludum Dare. My toolset:
Also, if anyone somehow remembers the troubles I had with my LD46 entry, the mentioned bug is now fixed and I've finally uploaded a seemingly working HTML5 build.
I'll also probably use my Godot function library. Good luck everyone!
Are you excited for Ludum Dare 49? This will be my 3rd time participating!

Our favorite time of year has come once again!
We couldn't be more excited to put ourselves back to the grind for this LD. Good luck to all of y'all, and don't be afraid to get weird with it! :pointright: :cowboy: :pointright:

Howdy! I’m HacksawUnit, from the ‘USA’. I love creating and thinking about all sorts of games.
LudumDare 49! We made it past '48' and it seems the 'compo' is still here as usual... I will cherish these '48 hour' chunks as long as I can! Haha. I should really figure out how many LudumDare's I've participated in so far. I think it's at least 10... Anyway! October. I love Autumn, and have been especially looking forward to it for some time due to the heat of summer. Things are still quite strange across the planet- well, even stranger than things were pre-pandemic. I wish everyone a very safe and fun LudumDare, and a great end of the year!
Favorite tools list:
🍬 Construct2: HTML5 game creation software!
🍬 Aseprite: Pixel art program!
🍬 GIMP: Open source image editor!
🍬 LSDJ and bgb: Authentic Gameboy synthesizer and emulator!
🍬 Audacity: Open source sound editor!
🍬 itch.io: Storefront/games host!
If I follow both the LD rules and another jams rules, can I submit to both?
I
Team Cocoa Moss hopes to complete our 16th game working together this time around for Ludum Dare. This will be my 25th time personally partaking in the event.
Funnily enough, up until earlier this week we were still working on our previous game, Far Side of the Mirror. We hope to publish a major "2.0 update" for that with significantly more content, but for now we've turned our attention to the upcoming weekend jam!
I'll be using Godot, as has been the case for all of my more recent LD entries.
A quick PSA to those of you using Godot in conjunction with VS Code: Godot v3.3.3 contains a bug that causes the editor to crash when using the VSCode Godot Plugin. This bug has been since fixed, but the fix is currently not yet in the stable release build. If you're using the VS Code editor integration, I'd highly recommend that you either use the v3.3.4 RC snapshot, or downgrade to v3.3.2 for now.
I spent yesterday and today working on a bunch of improvements to my framework/starter code, which is split into two parts -- the framework itself and the project template(https://bitbucket.org/DDRKirbyISQ/godot-template/src/master/). Neither of these are documented or suitable for use externally, so I'm declaring them here as more of a formality than anything else.
For LD48 I had already started with some very useful scripts in my framework, such as a dialog box, complete with text scrolling and multiple choice selection. However, I still ended up needing to implement a lot of other basic patterns and components, such as 4-way movement coupled with animation, arbitrary entities that you can interact with, and doors/warps that transition you between scenes.
I've spent some time yesterday and today adding some of that functionality and will probably continue to work on that in the coming hours, as well as make a big grocery run so that we're all stocked up on food for the weekend.
See you all at the starting line where we shall all gather to complain about the theme! ;)
Hoping for a theme that sparks a good idea! didn't finish last time I joined, I just couldn't think of anything!
Hello everyone! I'll be joining again. My first ludum dare was LD27, This will be my 11th(!).
My goal this year is to finish a game in a healthy way. Going to get plenty rest, eat good food, and work with a purpose!
I hope everyone will enjoy their time this weekend and I can't wait to see all the games! :smile:
Sleep for more than 3 hours during compo.
... yeah.
I was super hyped to make a game this weekend, got everything set up, made a few small test projects just to get into the game making mood again
... and then woke up with a fever that made me exhausted just typing this post out. So I think doing a 48 hour coding marathon might not be the best idea. It's kind of sad but what can you do.
I'll probably still do game test streams when the voting phase comes around but I obviously can't actually rate games this time.
Well, I'm looking forward to all the creativity about to be unleashed and to play your games. See you for the big 50 :D
Alrighty this is my first time joining Ludum Dare jam after 3 years of missing the event (talk about consistency). Im super exited and stressed too but there's something I don't know how to deal with. Im gonna have a really busy Sunday so I won't be able to develope much, for people who are experienced with game jams, is that a really bad thing ? I mean one day is a big percentage out of 3, is it gonna impact my game that much ? or can I still make it as long as the scope is smaller ?
Tool and Color Palette is Ready ! free use for you :p

And you ?
Yeah ! finally ... this is tense :)
Going to participate by myself this time, so giving it a shot at COMPO.
I'll be using Clickteam Fusion 2.5 as I always do.
Here's my codebase / warmup-project. (Password: mudraduel49) :key2: :lock:

I went ahead and made my own global controller-input system for the project template.
It should support keyboard, gamepad and touch-controls. I've hosted a browser-build DEMO on itch, so you can try the thing even on your smartphone!
``` Some of the tools I'll be using...
GRAPHICS: GIMP guvcview skanlite
MUSIC/SFX: Audacity Sooperlooper Qsynth Qtractor sfxr ```
I was planning to use my drawing tablet for graphics, but I lost the pen somewhere! (The usual story)
I guess this the universe's way of telling me to return to ink and paper once again!
It's quite appropriate, since it's already Inktober!
But yeah... For now I should probably try to get some sleep when I still can!
*It's time to JAAAAAAAAAM.*
"Only dogs can catch fish with the paws."
I'm in again. New account. Never seem to get a game finished..
Going with Godot+Clojure bindings (freshly baked).
Well. I am in. My last LD was 38. After that, my life kinda crumbled. Got diagnosed with depression dissorder, lost job, had some suicide attempts, was in mental hospital for some time. After that, i turned new page in my life. So, this is my first LD in my new life.
I posted my "I'm in" post a while back but seeing that there are quite a number of new people, I decided to posted it again with some tips. Here is my set up
Tips/Reality check 1. You have 48 hours (72 for Jam), but in reality you only have about 20. 2. Despite having only 20 hours, spend 1 or 2 planning and thinking out what you want to do. It is worse when you realised your idea is a bad one 3 hours into development. 3. Plan out your scope and cut it by half. At the end of the first day, cut whatever is left by half again. (If are new, you might want to cut it by 75%). 4. Identify your MVP, and beeline to a it ASAP. It is more satisfying to add to something playable, than to just blindly stare at code. Ideally by the end of the first day, you should have the core loop finished; core loop being menu -> game -> gameover/victory. 5. Spend your last 2-3 hours playing the game, fixing bugs and balancing instead of adding more features. 6. Don't make your game too hard. Most people will give up after 5 minutes. 7. Although it might be late to change, browser game usually get more play.
Do share more tips if you have any.
take it easy!try your best。
Hi, I'm BigManCloudy and I'm currently working on a puzzle game called "Fade". I've never been in a game jam before and I'm so hyped! I'm choosing the jam and I'm working with fellow sound designer @TetaBester (sorry for the @). I'll be using GameMaker Studio 2 because I've been using it for a year or so. Good luck, y'all!
I'm in for the 9th time in a row! My objective is 10 in a row :)
Also wanted to take the opportunity to show you how a game I made for the 46th edition. Will not pitch you here, the point is not to grab wishlists (ok maybe a bit), but to show you how that what you will make this weekend can become bigger if you care for it!
You can see more of it on its Steam page
And I also take this opportunity to also share some game jam tips with you : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2p66V1fZ8kk
Wishing you to have fun, learn new things and add a cool game to your portfolio! Have a great LD everyone, cheers!
Hi, I'm new to this community and Game Jam. I just wanna say hi to fellow game developers.
Last time I did a Ludum Dare was #38, so it's been a while.
I'm using UE4 and trying to do as much in C++ as I can (instead of using blueprints).
I'm going to try to do something multiplayer, distributing a dedicated server EXE and a client EXE. This will be a challenge to create and setup within 48 hours. And I have to remember to leave a lot of time for packaging the UE4 binaries because it can take a while to build.
There's no way I can code for 48 hours, I will probably really get 20 hours to make this thing. Let's see how it goes. Good luck everyone. :thumbsup: :sweat_smile:
I
I'll only have approx 16 hrs for this one. Keep it small! Get it working on day one because I can add more later. My aim for this one is to get music and sound in this time round. Good luck all
(seriously, I had to do this in Microsoft Edge because Chrome would only allow one character in the Description before it locked the description input box, weird).
Hi jammers! I wanna share with you some of the assets I've made for qick development, especially game jams. They can speed-up development process, as they contains some ready for use common components & scripts.
These assets are free & open-source, and available on bitbucket, so you can easily download and use them in your project. All assets contains readme in their repo.
| Asset (+ link) | Description | | -------- | -------- | | Unity Template Project | Rich set of common components shared to all projects. Contains both pre-made basic folder structure (for scripts, prefabs, materials etc and game components like movement, health, UI, game management. Good candidate to start new jam project from this repo. | | Profit | Scripts extensions in categories: coroutines, collections, math, components, etc | | Ragdoll Shooting | Contains ready-for-use components related to: 2d-ragdoll, battle, shooting, movement |
All assets are being getting better from time to time.
I will focus as a last time to finish the game on Saturday. It was very satisfying to do that.
Small scope. Simple Idea. No reinventing wheel.
Probably will use Kotlin to do a Multi platform project
So: - Kotlin / LibKTX - Blender / Krita - GarageBand / Ableton
Let's jam!
Co worker challenged we to Ludum Dare this year so here we go team, going to get something done this time woot woot!
Untitled
Oh, finaly i got a Vacation! It's time to join the Jam! Themes are awsome, can't wait final theme anouncement:)
LudumDare 49 here we are again. Well, maybe(at 99%). All Themes seem interesting, except for some(Coff Coff Delivery Coff Coff) - Hopefully I'll come with some creative and cool idea.
Tools I'll be using: - Unity for Coding - Procreate for Design/Art - Audacity/FLStudio for Music
High chance of me streaming the process, just for fun:: https://www.twitch.tv/stroeandre I'll take this challenge very relaxing and cool. Bought some beer for Creativity porpoise lol.
Hopefully, I won't commit the same errors I did in LudumDare 48.
This will be my 3rd time entering the compo. My tools:
On my previous entries, I ended up prioritising story and graphics at the expense of the core mechanic- this led to really long and boring gameplay loops. So, my goal this time is to focus on developing a fun core mechanic that can give the player a satisfying experience in under 5 minutes, before thinking about story and art.
https://discord.gg/S6MCUHDE
Right now there is a little less than 10 hours to go, so I hope everyone's ready!
Hey, i'm in!
My objective this time is to deliver (:wink:) something (Jam or compo, not decided) at the end. Even if it's not 100% done.
I will most probably use Unity and Blender.
Stay hyped everyone, it's starting soon!
Hi, wife is out of town this weekend :(
So, I will try to participate for the first time on the Compo category!! (supposedly I will have more time and focus)
Last Jam for me was LD46 with my brother, so I was really looking forward to this one.
I'll be using the amazing Godot Engine, probably a 2D game (but I really want to try to make a 3D game someday)
Good luck to you all!
Obligatory "we're in" post :)
Its time for a new challenge for our team of four! Our tools of choice are Unity, Blender, Photoshop and Audacity.
We wish best of luck to all the participants. Let's make some cool games no matter how bad theme is going to be! :D
Best of luck for everyone participating in Ludum Dare 49 - which begins in just over 9 hours!
It’s that time of year again, and I’m ready for another Ludum Dare! I haven’t made nearly as many jam games as I’d have liked to this year, but the trade-off is that they’ve been of a higher quality (in my opinion, at least) ;) Good luck to the fellow jammers, and may the best game win!
I'll be teaming up with @whycardboard once again for this edition. The software I'll be using:
I wish you all good luck and a good jam!
f
Yeah, just the themes I liked and disliked
Unity, Aseprite, Audacity, FLStudio,
and of course, pen & paper and github. Enjoy the jam everyone!
Missed submitting in Ludum Dare 48 as I was unwell on the Sunday, so am hoping for a redemption arc this time.
Will be using Game Maker Studio 2, Paint.Net, SFXR and maybe Audacity and/or Bosca Ceoil
I'm in, even though I've got ridiculously little time on my hands. Gonna use Godot, Paint.NET (a true professional) and Audacity. It will probably be isometric. Good luck everyone!
My last game wasn't very innovative and the graphics were bad, but I at least did well in the Fun category. This time, I'm going to scope down to allow a bit more polish hopefully.
Tools: Unity, aseprite, bfxr, Bosca Ceoil, Audacity.
This jam I want to focus on adding more Juice or Game Feel. Good luck all!
I always love to mix up my wallpaper for Ludum Dare and the talented community always comes up with great wallpapers. If you have one, know of one or know of a wallpaper thread let me know!
Finally getting back to LD! LOVE2D, VSCode, Aseprite, FL.
We turned our Ludum Dare 43 game Deadline of the Dead into a full release. It's called Zombie Admin and it's about a regular working day in the zombie apocalypse.
We're celebrating release week with a 25% early bird discount!
Support us by buying Zombie Admin: https://hastilyassembled.itch.io/zombie-admin
So it's been a long while since Wormwood Studios have entered a game jam - we have some new faces now though, and all of us are basically champing at the bit to get started on this thing!
Our team consists of; Me (Design, Art, Animation, Music, SFX) Michael (Design, Writing, Coding) Florian (Music) Sarah (Animation) and a handful of great voice actors including Miranda and Aaron. Our tools will mainly include;
Unity - Engine
Photoshop - Art + Animation
Reason - Music + SFX
Best of luck to all other teams - Let's Rock!!!
Been a few years since I did a jam so I’m back in.
I’ll be using Construct 3, Aseprite, BFXR, and whatever that music program is called that I can never remember the name of.
It’s been a while since I did any gamedev and I’m relatively new to Construct 3 so don’t expect anything flashy.
Hello,
I suck at music. I need hours on bosca ceoil or other similar tool to make a simple crappy melody.
There are tools that can generate music without any skill required (AI based or not). For example strofe or musenet. But I didn't found one that 100% satisfy me.
Do you know other similar tools that could be usefull in the jam?
For my toolset this time I'll be using FlashDevelop for my IDE, HaxeFlixel for the engine, Paint.NET for the graphics, and LabChirp + SFXR for the sound.
Never "finished" a game before. Lets see what happens. Good luck everyone!
It's been over a year since my last Ludum Dare, and over 4 years since I rounded out 5 years without missing a single LD! Wait a second, I've been doing LD for nearly a decade now! :open_mouth:
In any case, here's what I'm rocking:
I'll be doing most of the heavy lifting on this one but I will be working with a composer for audio help.
I'll be watching and posting here and on the #ldjam hashtag on Twitter this weekend. All the progress pics/gifs are super inspirational. I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone cooks up!! I'm on Twitter @20c109 if anyone wants to follow along with me.
If I've learned one thing in these 9 years it's that you gotta take care of yourself when you jam! I used to pull all nighters and slam energy drinks but all of my best jam games have come from jams when I got enough sleep each night and took breaks when I was stuck. The creative process demands time to stew! Take a break when you have a problem. Drink water. Pet your cat.
I've got more tips for JAM SUCCESS in my LD39 keynote:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfDYFXjKlvw
First time doing this. I’m super excited and anxious. I have some obligations this weekend I can’t avoid but I’m confident I’ll finish a game in time. Any helpful hints?
Really excited for the jam, it's a little bit annoying that it begins at 1am but still hyped for it. This is my second ludum dare, the first ludum dare was the first game jam I entered and made a game for. :v:
Never entered a game jam before, This will be my first, really anxious about not finishing in time, but still really hyped for it, will be quite an experience. Good Luck Everyone!
Tools: Unity Aseprite Bfxr Audacity
Recently finished University and now I have more time to take part in more game jams. Still have some obligations during the weekend and Monday but going to try my hardest. By myself for this so hopefully I won't get judged to harshly for graphics and the like since I'm mainly a programmer lol. Good luck to everyone!
I've participated in Game Jams before but I'm new to the Ludum Dare!
The tools I'll be using are: Gamemaker Studio 2, Aseprite, and sfxr!
I'm super excited to make a game and play y 'all's games!
Man okay so I'm thinking of ideas for all of the themes in the final theme voting so I can come into the real "planning" phase of the jam at 6 with some ideas, but I have absolutely no ideas for if the theme is summoning. Anyone thought of anything cool they want to share?
I'm happy to join another Ludum Dare! I've been working as a software developer for the last few months and I really miss making games more regularly.
Team and Tools
For the art I'll be joined by my wife who's an illustrator, I think she uses Illustrator and Photoshop, but I'm not completely sure.
In the sound side of things I'll try to create some music and SFX myself using Reaper and a MIDI controller.
For the engine and IDE I'll use Unity and Rider.
Lately I've been kind of stuck on coding in my job, so I'll take this game jam as an opportunity to have fun with game design, music and writing. Can't wait for the theme reveal!
*Great Ludum Dare for everyone! :heart: *
I'll be participating to this edition, steaming live on twitch the whole dev! It will be in french but I can speak english if you drop by :)
I'm going to work alone and do simple concept but push the polish as far as I can. As usual I'll work with Unity, Reaper, Blender & Photoshop.
I wanted to do a Compo but since I have a free Monday, I'll probably participate in Jam.
See you this week end!
Hallo-you-weenies!
Last time Ludum Dare was running i was unfortunately hospitalized and had to sit the LD out. Now im back with full force! 🙌
Because people love these, here are the stuff im using:
💀 GameMaker: Studio 2: Gamemaker is game engine i've always used, and love it dearly!
💀 Aseprite: A very nice pixel art program, i like it…10/10!
💀 BeepBox: I make music right inside there, in that little spot right there!
💀 Bfxr & Audacity: With these, i make beeps and boops and crazy sounds!
💀 Trello: Here i do my game concept, ideas and to do lists!
💀 itch.io: This is my go-to place when uploading my games, very nice!
Have a wondeful Ludum Dare y'all! I'll be posting updates here on my feed of the progress!
After moving from my hometown, getting a new home office job and finally managing to finish my PC Setup, I'm happy to be able to participate in a game jam again! This will be my second Ludum Dare (although my first one wasn't much to brag about), and here are the tools that I'll be using:
:whitecheckmark: Unity - I love C# and this is my main game engine ever since I stopped using RPG Maker when I was a kid, I'll probably be making a 2D game in this.
:whitecheckmark: Aseprite - Hands down, the best pixel art software in the market, with all the functionality you'll need and for a low price too.
:whitecheckmark: Notion - The app I use to organize everything in my life, and yes, that includes game jams! I'll use this to make a board system similar to Trello and to note anything I'll need. I HIGHLY recommend this app to anyone who wants to organize their studies/work/finances!
:whitecheckmark: BFXR & Audacity - For sound effects, really simple and intuitive software that I've been using for the last year.
:whitecheckmark: BeepBox - If I decide to make my own music, I'll be using this software as it provides everything I need to make simple, quick songs for my game!
Wish you all good luck, have a great Ludum Dare experience!
This is my third time Ludum Dare Jam. I use Unity 5 and Asperite :grin:
Good luck with the theme and HAVE FUN YEAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
https://discord.gg/S6MCUHDE
Going to be working with the same partner as last time, going to be using LOVE again and adding Milkytracker to the mix to hopefully produce a game that's not 'mute' this time around. Best of luck everyone!
Here's hoping I can actually finish. Goodluck folks :smile:
First of all, welcome and glad to make your acquaintance! In the past few Ludum Dares, there's been a great influx of new developers joining around, and I'm half expecting this to continue with that trend. While it's not much, I'd like to share some words of encouragement for you. And heck, even if you've already participated before or are a veteran, it might give some extra insight. Maybe even share your experiences below? That'd be great.
Remember that there is no "right way" to participate in Ludum Dare or game jams in general. Some people come here to try to learn how to get into game development. Others want to experiment with new mechanics. Some have tried to go beyond their boundaries of skill, and some even want to put their skills to the test to get the top positions in the jam.
Whichever is your reason to join, *I hope you feel welcome and at home while surrounded with all of us. * Do not feel discouraged if your end project is not as great as you thought it'd be. It happens to hundreds of people here, every jam. We're all learning, just like you.
If it's your first time participating in a jam, and you're not used to these short game development bursts, you might want to make things very, very simple. There are some people that do grandiose stuff solo, and there are teams that work as well-oiled machines (and I don't want to brag, but my team at Whales And Games has made some jam games that have been praised for their extra polish. I love ya, fam!).
For most of the newcomers, consider scope. If you're just getting used to certain tools and finding your sea legs, the process of learning and getting used to what you're doing will get in the way of development. I'd recommend you to start with something simple and bare bones, and build from there. Your game doesn't need to have a dozen levels and 3 game loops from the start. It can, but one of the main skills you should try to learn on the jam is to work under a very strict, unforgiving deadline.
The jam lasts for a few days, but your game and experience can continue evolving past the deadline. A lot of people take their game and continue updating and polishing it beyond the jam. I'm not telling you to try to make a commercial game out of yours, specially if it's your first jam. But, say, some people think they could have learned more with just a bit of time. Others don't make it to the deadline, yet decide to make their attempt work or be more presentable. Even "giving up" doesn't have to be the end. There are always more jams and more Ludum Dares, so keep participating.
Speaking of jam games that got support post-release, let me quickly pitch ours to you. We made Townseek, our casual exploration trading game, during the Global Game Jam. Done in a very tight schedule too. We updated it post-release, and we're further enhancing it for Steam! Do check it out!
Basically, all I want to say is that you should participate in this game jam however you see fit. But the core of the jam, the spirit, is that you are not alone in this, and we're all learning together. By the end of the jam, you should really get into playing other people's games. I mean, aside from the 20 ratings requirement to get your score. You'll find games of all skill levels, likely have a great time playing many of them, and maybe even learn a trick or two for your next project! Get to know people too! We've made a lot of connections thanks to Ludum Dare!
You be you, and do as you can. While my team won't participate this time around, we're still looking forward to seeing what pops up from this jam. If you'd like to share your stuff with us, you're more than welcome to join our Discord Server! Some people there are participating here too, after all!
So get ready, and we hope that you make a lot of jam! :whale:
I was planning to join this jam, but I was wondering. Do you need to use a game engine?
I will be streaming some level design for our submission throughout the jam at https://www.twitch.tv/happydoesgamedev
hi all,
I'm an architect studying game dev for over a year now.I've took part in 2 jams so far but this will be my first ever ludumdare. im really glad to be a part of it i hope i can make it in time!
huge thanks for anyone who is making all this possible and have fun all!
this jam will be my first and last. this is reverse psychology to encourage myself.
Hi! I’m a writer, editor, and published game designer. If you have a dialogue-heavy game, I’d be happy to check out your plans and join your team to write and/or edit. Reach out!
Noticed that some of my students would flourish in something like PICO-8, so I'm jamming with it for the first time to get a handle on the toolset. Any advice or resources to point me to, would be much appreciated! ^-^ (*im currently experienced with unity/python/scratch)
Happy LD49 everyone!
This is my 9th Ludum Dare - I haven't missed one since LD40! The jams are awesome and even if I don't finish, I always have a blast! This time though, I'll be jamming with my girlfriend, and it'll be her first game! I'm super excited to make something with her, it'll be super fun jamming with someone who's so new to the game dev.
Here's what we'll be using:
Engine: Unity (if we're making a 2D game) / UE4 (if we're making a 3D one - Blueprints are awesome for beginners)
2D Art: Photoshop, Piskel
3D Art: Blender
Sound/Music: Audacity, Garage Band
I can't wait for this weekend - it'll be a jam to remember!
I have been programming an Unity plugin that allows rendering into an oscilloscope. What better time to battle test it than LDJAM!
So I'm only new to coding. I started school a month ago, and only really touched the basics. We've been building a 2D farming sim game, (essentially a stardew clone), and have only really covered things like movement, inventory systems, dialogue, tree cutting (without tools), and small things like that, so I have no idea why I thought I would join a jam....
But you know what? Even if it's a total mess of a game that doesn't even play at all, at least I can say I gave it a go. And who knows? I might be able to pull off a basic clicker game, and that will be an accomplishment of its own.
This'll be my third game release this year, and my seventh overall. I'm not doing anything fancy, literally just a minigame probably. Something I can pop out the door and be done with. I just want to get another game done. Let's gooooo!
In less than six hours the theme will be announced. I am HYPED! I will be working together with a friend this time (@ithebreather ). This is our schedule for the first day!
No, but all seriousness: we will actually find out what the theme is about 9 hours later. That way we will start brainstorming together, we thought that would be more fun.
Things I learned last time: - If you add a scoreboard, make sure to support characters like "öäåáàèé" - People loved the addition of a character creator. Some kind of player interaction makes the game more fun. - If you are making a text adventure, please realize that the majority of the time won't be programming or making graphics. I spent a total of 24 hours perfecting the plot last time. As a programmer, that was not the most fun experience haha - If you do something with genders, think about it carefully :-)
For the newcommers: first of all, welcome and have fun! Don't forget, the most important part of this weekend is YOU! So: - Stay hidrated - Take care of yourself - Make sure to take a strawl once in a while to clear your mind - If you have access to a good deskchair, use it properly to spare your back. Or take a strawl more often if you are limited to the kitchenchair of a couch. - Don't overscope your project to prevent stress.
I'm gonna make a game. Good luck to everyone participating.
Hi all!
First LD here - I'm aiming for the Jam, but I'm a heady team of one so a little bit nervous and quite excited.
3D Art - Blender, Substance Painter
2D Art - Photoshop
Engine - Unity3d
Sound - Audacity, JFXR, Beepbox
Planning and Design - Pureref, pen and paper!
There's a slim chance I might end up in the compo but I suspect this will be jam so I don't have to worry about shaders and some of the more boring bits - but we'll see how it goes and what the theme is!
Fingers crossed it goes well and good luck all!
This is my 3rd attempt I'll be using
Haxe Heaps.io Gimp Audacity
What's the worst that can happen?
I am joining Ludum Dare for the 3rd time.
Good luck!
1) Don't quit.
It doesn't matter what you've finished with. Release it anyway.
Yes, even if it's broken.
Releasing a game is something many developers don't get enough experience in, because 9/10 of us finish 1/10 of our projects. This is one thing that makes jams so great. Get a game done, make it play, and get the experience you need in releasing and managing it. Take advantage of this time and learn.
2) Watch your scope. Please.
It's incredibly easy to say "I'll just make a simple platformer" or "I'll just make a simple match-3 game", but those games aren't nearly as simple as you think they are. Try if you must, because it'll show you exactly what we're talking about when we say "go even simpler than that", but please, go even simpler than that. Trust me. This is my 11th year of gamedev, I like to think I know what I'm talking about.
3) Don't be discouraged by other projects.
This one's really hard. You're going to see progress updates that look amazing, and people's work that makes yours look like first-year garbage. But here's the thing: your work is your work. Be proud of what you're making. We like to say "the real prize in a game jam is the fact that you actually did it". These people are just a bit further along than you are, and that's totally okay. Keep on it, don't get discouraged, and you'll get to that point yourself soon enough!
We are the team from Saint-P. , Russia! Taking part in LD for the first time in this composition!
Good Luck everyone :v:
Been obsessing over Diablo II so that may play into some inspiration!
