Ludum Dare 49 October 1–4, 2021

I've implemented a chat!

It's not a feature creep if you're doing it for a one-off joke

Oh, wait

Haven't written a single line of code yet. Let's hope this graphics-first strat pays off

Heat network manager and builder

Idea is usable and I can manage it in this weekend, but that art, ohh, I cant do watchable art :DScreenshot 2021-10-02 at 14.08.15.png

Radioactive minesweeper? Maybe, maybe...

First day of organised chaos

I was worried about getting a workable idea at first. I came into this jam planning to do a plat-former but couldn’t think of a gimmick I could implement. So, after some thought I got my current idea.

I was going with resource management/placement game, even if it meant learning a control system I’ve not practiced yet. After taking a break to handle parental duties, I realised I was actually planning out a board game. So why not make it look like one!

Here’s a shot of some of the parts, I might need to adjust the colours but that’s an “if I get time” task.

Image Day 1 - Pieces.png

As for scripts I’ve got the piece movement and the skeleton of the scoring system. Game rules now planned out (I removed some of the more complex ideas to keep in the time-frame).

Tomorrow I won’t get too much time to work on it, with a kids’ party to go to and a promise to take my daughter swimming. But I hope to at least finish of the scoring system and start the scripts for the basic enemy system using the Pandemic and Battlestar Galactica board games as a guide.

Good thing I’m going for the Jam instead of Compo. I’m going to need the extra day.

Hope you are all going on track and not hitting too many troublesome code (some has to happen or it wouldn’t be Ludum Dare).

Another Milestone

Well, after many hours of work, the core engine, world system and tiles are finished. Here's a level from the game impressive.PNG

Beginning of unpredictable adventure

We finally came up with our core-mechanics, I would say we went through a lot of diceagreemants. Well, now we just have to make this concept work. Stay with us, to see final result:D Preparations.jpg

Figuring out 3d physics

So, the game will be about breakdancing Tic Tac... I guess...

Actually, no, but I'm having a lot of fun setting the basic movements :D

Working on art

Unstable island gameplay loop done!

A productive day! Working on what is probably best described as a puzzler disguised as a building game.

InGameZoomedIn.png

A wise* man once raised the concern about islands tipping over with overpopulation... In this case he is right! (and worry about sinking while you are at it!) The game gives you a series of tasks which specify the quantity of each building you need to place. Just watch the water... Sounds simple eh. A story in pictures:

DEV TALK: Not using physics for this as I want control over the movement (ie. no runaway tipping). Early work on tuning weight distribution calculations and lean angles:

I'm joining after all!

This Ludum Dare I already have to participate on my own instead of with my regular partner, which is a real shame. Especially since I can't art for the life of me, so anything I make won't be appealing to play at first glance. After having an exhausting week, combined with feeling uninspired and even annoyed by the themes in the voting rounds I had decided that I wouldn't join this jam.

When checking the theme out of curiosity I suddenly and instantly got an idea to work on though! It's not great and I'm not sure how to make it actually a fun game yet, but at the very least I'll be entertaining myself by working on it. I've been watching Star Trek: The Next Generation lately (I love the nostalgic cozy sci-fi feeling of it) and things tend to get unstable there.. a lot. So when I saw the theme I immediately came up with the idea to create a bit of a parody of the techno-babble and the fact that engineers always seem to come up with accurate time estimates the moment they hear something is wrong.

In my LD49 game, playing as chief engineer Feordi LaGorge you will have to keep the 'wurp core' stable while decyphering technical messages describing your tasks and determining time estimates as accurately as possible. Of course a variety of events will make your job more challenging.

Hopefully I'll get at least some playable version ready by monday!
