Ludum Dare 55 April 13–16, 2024

It's been a while since the last time I've done this

LD55Slaughter.png

I would have a lot of things to say about this one, but I'll stick to only this one issue, which seemed to me worst than previous slaughters I've done: I'm sure I saw, word-to-word copy or barely reworded, at least 3/4 of all the LD themes ever done… What the hell is your problem, guys?! Appart if it was for trolling, if you really want to make a game with any previous LD theme, go ahead, do it now and post it here (and I'm pretty sure that some of us will happyly like it, comment, and give feedback), but for the sake of LD spirit, stop suggesting thoose for future LDs!!!
I think I will never understand that, and to be honest I'm sick repeating myself almost each LD about this issue… :pensive:

Done my duty

It is done!

More information to the god of information

Hi Hi!

I read the rules of the competition, but I did not find information about the process of publishing the game, how the game application will be sent, whether it needs to be deployed somewhere or it is enough to drop the link to the repository, etc. I would greatly appreciate any information on this.

I also think it would be cool to exchange useful resources like free sprites, assets, generators, etc., which I would also appreciate!

Good luck!

Preparin

Yaaaaayyy! Another way to torture ourselves! Let's start another jam!

My finger hurts...

Finished the 'Slaughter Round'!

My mouse button finger was injured during the selection process.

Drink lots of water so you don't cramp up.

Take your finger for a walk every 10 mins.

Do not pick your nose after you have finished as you could spasm and put your eye out.

Alternate fingers so you won't get finger envy.

Finally, and this is important, no finger wrestling for at least two weeks.

Hello everyone. For a few days, as usual you can get my game Theorem for free. Not the best game which I made, but another puzzle game in your library. Have fun. I wish you the best for the 55th LudumDare. And don't forget - no matter it is, the theme always suck :snowman:

If you didn't know , you can use Y and N

I've read a few people complaining of worn-out mouse finger

You can use 'Y' or 'N' on keyboard instead. Probably missed by a few as it's grey on grey text

BTW - anyone figured a way to call the whole list via API? It'd be really interesting to compare how many are -

a: a theme that's already been done b: an idea that occurs multiple times ( or with different wording )

Excited for this one

I finally slaughtered all! Unfortunately some of my favorite were duplicated all along, I counted at least 4 of "chain" or "chain effect". Let's hope one of them make it through.

I'm very excited for this one, my last was the 51. I think I'll be using TIC-80 this time, but with a twist: I'll code in Fennel. I have a lot of interest in LISP languages, but never did anything in Fennel before. TIC-80 also allows Scheme, and maybe that would've been the best choice, since I code a lot of Racket, but I think the Fennel's mascott is cute.

I already started writing some basic snippets of code that can be useful:

  • Collision functions
  • Sprite animations
  • Dialog system
  • Camera shakes
  • Simple Particle System
  • Game state management

On my last LD I used another Fantasy Console (WASM4) and coded the game in C because that's a language that I have experience, but I knew nothing about the console library functions and had to write all the above from scratch within the compo and that took a lot of time.

One more week!

Got 'em!

I was really picky this time around, my first time where my keepers were less than triple digits.

Anywhoo, quite a few themes in there really spark my imagination and I'm looking forward to the big reveal! 😄

Wow! I'm totally done!

Wow! Im totally done! Amazing! I slaughtered 2129 themes!

This took me ten hours!

QQ截图20240406114449.png This is my first time participating in Ludum Dare. In the theme voting session, when I saw many themes, I started to brainstorm wildly, so the progress was slow, which caused me to start voting from yesterday noon and continue voting until today noon. Start preparing for the competition from now on, no matter what the result is, give it my all!

Some confusion about the rules

As this was my first gamejam experience, I encountered some ambiguity with the guidelines, and I did not find the corresponding explanation on the official rules page... I want to know:

  1. I noticed that everyone kept very few themes in the theme slaughter round. How is it determined which themes advance to the final round? Are the least slaughtered themes selected for the final round?

  2. I've learned that the game doesn't have to be strongly related to the theme. Can the game be completely irrelevant to the theme? For example, the theme is "limited space" and the game is an open world adventure.

  3. If I already have a good idea, can I write the general framework and core gameplay of the game before the game starts?

  4. (This is the limit case for 2 and 3, which may sound rather crazy) If the answer to both 2 and 3 is "yes", is there a game that can be released on gamejam that is completely pre-made? When I looked at the ratings, it seemed like a game like this could easily get a high score in all the other categories except for a low score on the theme.
