Date/time of the contest

Hi,

I'm a bit confused please tell me the exact date and time the contest starts and ends, specifically for solo and team modes.

Thanks

Bring it on!

A lot of fun themes this time! When's the next round, folks?

Round One. Fight!

I should warn you, I'm rating this in quite a selfish manner. For every potential theme I ask myself:

Will it be fun on every stage of the jam? Will I enjoy making my own project, reading about others' process, and rating all the games?

And only if the answer to all three is a definite YES do I give it a [+1].

So here is my justification:

Collapse [+1]: Old, but lots of definitions, so a lot of different games.

Rock, paper, scissors [+1]: Cool mechanic with a lot of potential.

Alchemy [-1]: Single definition, will result in lots of similar games.

Strange creatures [-1]: Seems like a lot of art, not a lot of gameplay.

Edge of the world [0]: There might be something here, I just haven’t found it yet.

Repair [0]: Again, only one definition, and although the palette is a bit bigger, still does not spark too many original ideas.

Build your own path [0]: Might be fun, might result in out-of-scope disaster and a lot of unfinished games.

Single resource [0]: Very broad, has a mechanical feel to it. Can be fun.

Momentum [-1]: Feels like physics thing, and that usually requires time, and tweaking, and downloadable builds.

Leave something behind [-1]: Can be fun, but is as old as a world, so I feel like I’ve already played that a million times.

Connected [0]: Same problem, a bit broader in terms of ideas, so scores an extra point.

Combinations [-1]: Seems like we’ll have a 1000 puzzles. Not ready for that rating.

Isolated [-1]: So broad it’s a bit of an overkill for me.

Stronger together [0]: Don’t mind it, but every time I see it, my brain starts playing ‘Happy together’, and I’m not ready for a full weekend of this.

Sanctuary [0]: It’s okay. If it doesn’t get too religious, then some problems may occur.

Folklore [-1]: Just let it go. It’s not happening. We tried, it didn’t pan out.

I might reflect on it a bit more later and change something, so if you want to correct me in the comments, I'd love to have a discussion.

Good!

Timelapse Tools

Anybody knows any good timelapse tools for Ubuntu/Linux?

I did a quick research and in the end the conclusion was either using ffmpeg to directly capture from screen and generate the video file or using OBS. The problem with the former is that it only supports x-server and can't capture it on Wayland and the latter is that you can select the framerate of the capture to be say 1fps, but then the final video will also have 1fps and you'll have edit the video and change the framerate, and it also generate a 100mb video of mere 5 minutes of recording.

I really like the idea of the ffmpeg of capturing screen still at a certain rate and then just make a video with that afterwards. Does anyone know any tools to do that?

Thanks!

Look mom I'm old enough to vote!

My vote is based on me trying to imagine what kind of games I'll be making for that theme and if their fun for me to develop.

Also Rock Papers Scissors? :cry:

As a Warm-Up, Here's Some Ideas

Collapse: Shoot weird stuff at wizard tower to collapse it. Scorched Earth-like maybe?

Rock, Paper, Scissor: Fighting game with 3D characters and cool anims, lots of juice, but ultimately it's just RPS

Alchemy: Make potions, some combinations explose

Strange Creature: open world game, find and pet all creatures

Edge of the World: You're a giant creature who has to balance on a flat earth

Repair: Recettear but it's a repair shop and you have to go to a dungeon to get spare parts

Build your own path: Minecraft-like where you need to build a path over a terrain with crafting

Single Resource: You're a vampire and your blood is both HP and MP (also, my suggestion, yay!)

Momentum: Snake game?

Leave something behind: ... dungeon crawler but after each level you need to leave one item?

Connected: Social deduction game, who knows who, like Murdle

Combinations: Arrange people into teams to solve puzzles

Isolated: Escape room but bigger?

Stronger together: Tile-based strategy game where allies in adjacent spaces give bonuses

Sanctuary: Cross a wasteland that's has areas where you can rest and regain health

Folklore: Card game with different folklore creatures

thanks for your attention

An open letter to all new LDers joining this year :-)

Welcome and have lots of fun! Please leave a comment here, so I can add you to my "to play list" later. Here are some tips I collected over the years :-)

  • You are the most important this weekend, so take care of yourself (drink/eat enough, sleep enough, use a good chair, etc)
  • Be aware of 'feature creep', a good way to do that is to plan something that should take half of the weekend to create. After that is done, and there is more time, you could add some extra features.
  • Make sure the game is easy for you to play: you know the mechanics very well as you are the designer. For other players it should be harder to play, as they did not spend an entire weekend to design it :smile:

I'm not sure I will do this for the remaining rounds

note : I rate 0 the ones I don't like but that if I had to choose I would prefer over the ones I rate -1

Collapse -> 0
I can't come with more than one kind of game with this as a gameplay mechanic, and not better with this as a background story. This don't proves that other ones don't exist, but this means that we may have to rate a lot of similar games

Rock, paper, scissors -> -1
No, thanks. I really don't want having to code an AI, even very basic, in order to play against it at an antediluvian game which not entertain me anymore since I'm ten - nor having to rate dozens of RPS themed games (and what is the next step? tic-tac-toe? heads-or-tails?)

Alchemy -> -1
Meh. There are lot of games on this theme, but they are more or less likely the same
(also fits my comment for "Collapse")

Strange creatures -> -1
I don't like Pokemon that much that I would like rating clones endlessly, and as a solo ludumdarer I don't see myself having to make so much artworks in so less time - plus, for LD#35 I already made a game which could fit this theme, and I have absolutely not any single other idea

Edge of the world -> -1
It may sound silly, but: this theme implies that the game obviously includes a "world". And I'm tired of LD themes that implies a "world" - tiny, connected, small… No, not again, thanks.

Repair -> +1
There are so much things and concepts that could need a fix, and so much ways to fix something…

Build your own path -> -1
Same comment than "Collapse", plus limiting on something to build

Single resource -> -1
This is a better rewording of LD#44's theme, and somewhat connected to LD#52's, and I really don't want to redo nor rate LD#44 nor LD#52

Momentum -> -1
If LD was limited to professional game makers, this could be a good theme. I'm not ready to code nor use an advanced physic engine, and I doubt to be the only ludumdarer with that mood - plus, same last comment than "Strange creatures", with my LD#47's entry

Leave something behind -> -1
40, 43, and "Running out of something" LD's entries already have explored all the concepts that I can think of with this theme

Connected -> 0
Same comment than "Leave something behind" with 30, 41, and 44 LD's

Combinations -> +1
If only we had this one instead of the LD#41's infamous theme...

Isolated -> -1
Objectively it's not a bad theme, but my first LD was LD#22, and sorry, I can't…

Stronger together -> 0
Meh. Just: meh. Maybe this one will have a better fate than its so-common sibling "strength in numbers" suggestion we have almost every LD, in which case see my next comment

Sanctuary, Folklore -> 0
The only good thing I see if one of those wins, is that we will not have it anymore in the next LD's votes

Reminder: you can start coding your game NOW

Both the Jam and the Compo allow you to use existing base code so you don't need to wait to start coding your game. You can use placeholder art/music/sounds/etc. to test. Even if you end up wanting to switch genres for the specific theme, you'll be able to reuse a lot of your base code.
