Ludum Dare 55 April 13–16, 2024

I'm in, and it feels great to be back!

Hey LD gang! It's been a while. Even during my last few LDs I've not had time to make much in the way of posts. Full-time gamedev has a way of sapping one's energy for indie stuff, but I was also spending that spare energy working on a larger indie project which unfortunately fell through a little.

But, that just means I have an even greater motivation to finally return to making something small and finishing it! I'd like to avoid missing LDs again, as I had quite the consecutive record going. As with the last times, I no longer use Unity, and this will be entering 19th(!!!!) LD Jam! God, I feel so old.

I've booked days off, I've got my mate wisdom_save who I'll be participating with (who I technically first met as an online friend specifically because of LD36! Here's a little pair of gifs to show off how far we've come!

Along with Unreal Engine 5, I use Visual Studio (and Visual Assist, it's a godsend) and - should I have time - FL Studio for a bit of music.

Best of luck everyone, and have fun this weekend! Remember, keep your scope tiny, focus on a complete experience revolving around 1-2 mechanics at most! Leave time for audio and polish! If you complete all that, then expand! That's the secret.

Taha

LD36 - 2016 - 3 full days of work: igknight2.gif

LD50 - 2022 - 1 single day because we both had work: (I guess mp4 imgur links still don't embed, so video will have to do)

Here we go!

If I did my math right, this will be my 9th time participating, and as always, aiming for the compo - and if nothing else, will promise to provide you with a classic chiptune-inspired soundtrack. :musical_note:

Tools I'm planning to use:

  • Godot + VS Code :computer:

  • GIMP + Inkscape + Blender :art:

  • Psycle + Cakewalk + Audacity :musical_note:

I’m in?!?

I’ve been doing this a long time (ld28?!) it’s fun let’s do it again.

Using Unity, Blender if I absolutely have to. I’m also turning 30 this month so this is the last LD of my 20s. One last chance for a banger game jam to round out the decade. Anyone else actually read these? If you read this you’re a real one.

Loving the themes on round 2

A lot of one word themes and others that allow for a wide variety of games. Not just one type of idea everyone is limited to like the tetris-likes last time.

Learning Godot (Goo-Do) for LudumDare (Elle-Dee)

I'm a professional developer and I'm IN for LD55! It will be 28th or 29th consecutive entry.

Typically I use a custom engine, and I've also used Unity but this will be the first in Guh-Dough. Today I'm learning live trying to get basic movement, camera and interaction. Will be 3D game.

Will be using Go-Dot 4.2.1 and Gee-Dee script. Who needs to see sharp?

Join the stream and ask "What LD tips do you recommend?"

I'm joining again after so long.

Daahrien

With the intent of heavily focus it on story and emotions. Let's see what I come up with when the theme is decided.

I will use:

  • Engine: Unreal Engine 5.
  • 3D: Bought Assets.
  • 2D: Photoshop.
  • Audio: 3rd Party (legally licensed).

Focus of the game:

  • Story. I will show my story writing skills in this condensed limited environment. What better place!
  • Simple but enjoyable gameplay. Time is limited. I have to use it wisely.
  • Military grade Polishing.
  • Surprises!
  • Visually / Auditively attractive. Even tho not making the assets myself, I will unite them together beautifully.
  • Voice acting. Only me? I don't know yet.

If you wanna see what I'm cooking in the big game dev pc (spoiler: it is the same pc). Come follow me on X:

Github copilot opinion

I've been using the github copilot quite heavily lately. What's your opinion on using copilot during LD compo?

Should I disable it, or is it ok in your opinion to use it?

I'm in

Used to be so good at finishing these, but haven't finished one in ages.

Will just be making a C++ game I think, will probably get some pixel access with GDI and go from there....

Oblgatory I'm In post!

6 years and counting!

This will be the 18th since the new Ludum Dare site launched 6 years ago! It's hard to imagine!

I'm going to be using Unity again, I've spent the past 10 months or so learning Godot in the background, but as a C# dev I can't in good conscience use Godot due to Godot 4+ not supporting Web with C# yet, I'll likely fully switch when that happens but for now It's going to be Unity! Tools are the usual:

2D

  • Aseprite
  • GIMP
  • Paint

3D

  • Blender
  • MagicaVoxel
  • Kenney Asset Forge/Shape

Audio

  • Tenacity
  • Lovely Composer

Gonna be hitting the Extra cateogry but need to make sure i down tools by the end of Monday. Last LD I tried to work on the game after the comp and never found time to go back and finish it. Which is a shame as it was an interesting game but there's always been something more important to work on.

Will be working in Unity in 2D. Thinking about doing some hex and turn-based since that's where my head's been lately. But we'll see how the theme goes.

Working solo as my collaborator for the weekend has sadly become unavaiable.

Goin to participate again, but

but how can I generate invite code? I want to make a team with my friend this time, but he still doesn't have an account here. Is it possible to create it now?2023-01-01 02em18/em20-Instagram - Vivaldi.png unrelated pig

Round 2 Themes

I just finished round 2 voting! What themes are people excited about?

Screenshot 2024-04-09 165954.png

I am personally looking forward to piracy, but there's lots of good themes (or perhaps my novice eyes are untainted by the years of repeated and similar game jam themes).

Wait it's already here?

Figured I'd check the Ludum Dare website to see when the next one was coming up. Turns out it's in 3 days! Whoops! Well. I guess i'm in? ThemeVoting.jpg ^ My votes for this year

We're in!
