LD27 August 23–26, 2013

Getting my LD on, for the first time

So I thought i’d attempt this whole LD thing, hope I can actually finish a game in time :)

Language: C++

Prerequisites: My own framework (Feanwork) written to work with SFML

IDE: VS 2012

Art: Paint.NET

Audio: sfxr and some other tool for random music? or maybe no music, I dunno.

My framework is available on GitHub (I wouldn’t use it though, since it has no documentation or comments, though I threw together a demo to demonstrate the use of the framework) and you can grab it right here

Wish everyone good luck!

I read it… Now I can go to sleep

First LD! Can’t wait

I first heard about Ludum Dare a little more than a year ago; I had done programming in the past and messed around with different languages, but I wasn’t in shape to design a video game, especially in 48-72 hours.  Depending on what the theme is and how my programming goes, I will most likely enter the jam.  I’m really pumped up for this LD!

The theme gets announced exactly 1 hour after I get off work on Friday, so I expect to get home, eat dinner, then program the entire night.

I will be coding Java, using Eclipse.
For Graphics I will use Photoshop of course.

For sounds I will probably just use SFXR, considering I am not too good at FL Studio yet.

Good Luck to everyone who plans on entering!

Participating!

Hello lovely ludum dare folk!

I’ve been away from the ludum dare scene cause of my new job. However, since I am unemployed I thought I should participate in this ludum dare while I can.

So, yes, I am participating in this ludum dare! Yay!

Things I will be using:

HaxeFlixel

GraphicsGale

Gimp

Fruity Loops

As3 Flixel as back up

My As3 Flixel Library

So, I’ve been playing with HaxeFlixel and thought about using it for this Ludum Dare. I thought it’d be neat to try. And if anything, I can fall back to Flash Flixel if I can’t get anything working. So anyway, that’s the plan. Have fun everyone!

announcement of participation.

Hi. I’m dbro. Though I question my own ability to create a game for LD27, I’ll try every year until (and after) I finish one.

Prepare for a comedy of errors to ensue.

I’m in!

This will be my 8th LD48. Here are the tools I plan to use, unless I get some crazy idea after the theme is announced:

  • Platform: Java/GWT/HTML5
  • Framework: LibGDX
  • IDE: Eclipse
  • Graphics: GIMP, Blender
  • Sound: Sfxr, Audacity
  • Music: Wolfram Tones

Here we go again

Back for the 8th time. No time, let’s cut to the chase:

Or I’ll just make a boardgame…

I wish everyone a fun weekend

Wow pfxr is really nice, thanks for this!

I’m in!

I thought I had a conflict but it was moved, so I’m 100% free this weekend and I can’t wait! I love Ludum Dare! This will be my 6th time.

  • Code: HTML5/JS with Quintus
  • Art: Photoshop
  • Sound: SFXR
  • Music: Autotracker-C

In the past I’ve tried different approaches to LD and focused variously on fun, innovation, polish, or learning a new platform. This time my goal is to make a game with a future after LD. We’ll see how that goes!

Golden Frogs 2013 Awards

Hello again,

I’m in but it doesn’t matter for a while because I have an announcement.

I would like to introduce a Golden Frog award for the extraordinary theme suggestions. As you know, there are many different kinds of themes: some are good, some are bad, many of them are slaughtered. I would like to present those, which excel in something, which are good but also those which are bad and deserve to die. I think that it is somehow better than presenting my pure pluses/minuses. Also I’m glad that suggestions were made anonymously so I don’t need to fund the gold (I’ll keep them for myself, thank you, sponsors).

May the ceremony begin.

Most surprising (but also important) award goes to “You are the Companion”.

Almost every game teaches us that we either are in the centre of attention or we simply doing something bad. But there are often a lot of back-story characters who are willing to help. Do you ever think about how they feel when you take the whole pride from victory or shout at their “stupid” AI. The companion’s rights is an open topic and I’m glad that we matured to start talking about it.

Most thought-provoking award goes to “Backwards”.

Think for a minute about a FPS, RTS, RPG or even a platform game played backwards and you have tons of fresh game ideas. This theme is packed with unexploited content. The only reason I won’t vote for that theme is because I won’t be able to play those game for whole 3 weeks ;)

Most difficult award goes to “You play both sides”.

I like that one. It’s extremely challenging. In fact I think that deploying a game which are fun even if you play both (for me it means all of) sides in 2 days is almost impossible. For instance, think about chess where you have to play black and white at once: booooring. Or 1P Quake Arena: boooring. A small game modification is needed. It is easier to modify a coop game, but, as long as I am concerned, I would go for powerful hardcore, for creating a real competitive game where you are your own true opponent!

Most annoying award goes to “Parallel worlds”.

Each time I was like “Oooh, it sure can win”. But this time I vote against. Why? Dunno, maybe because I prefer fresh ideas :P

Great but I saw it before award goes to “Colours”.

In general, “Colours” is a decent theme. It is wide, deep, interesting and all. The thing is: it is being exploited with literally every LD. I remember LD about evolution: every fifth entry was about colours/colouring; LD about villains: you are bad, you are white-and-black, hero is colourful – that scheme I saw also few times; LD about minimalism: well, you know :)

NO award goes to “Hacking”.

For me this one isn’t even a theme. It should be slaughtered, and not once but Sean-Bean-kind-of-slaughter times. Hacking in movies and games are overrated, we are totally fed up with it and, essentially, no matter how hard you try, your game  cannot be more thematic than “Hacker Evolution” or “Uplink”.

I don’t want to even write about it award goes to “Glitch”.

Runner-up awards goes to “10 seconds”, “Hunted”, “Contrast”, “Time”.

They are suggestions which almost won Golden Frog 2013 Grand-Prix. I will be glad if any of them is chosen.

And, ladies and gentlemen, it is the time to announce the big winner of our first annual Golden Frog Grand-Prix winner.

The editor’s choice award goes to “Space”.

I would ask the author to make a speech but since he is anonymous I will write just few words:

The first thing in my mind when I saw “Space” was a game from “The Next Game Boss” show where you had to punch people to make you some space in the crowd. I did some research and it was called “Cheap shot”. Space may also mean the space where we live or, according to “The Longest Journey” serie, space beyond that one where we live. They can interact with each other etc. Also “The Settlers” and “Liquid War” are good exemplars of game where space is of prime importance. This theme is still fresh, open, wide and fun. The one and only ultimate Golden Frog 2013 winner.

From this place I would like to congratulate all the winners and participants of Golden Frogs 2013 awards. See you all next year.

I’m In!

It’s time to officially enter the rat race of Ludum Dare!

  • ImpactJS/HTML5 for the coding.  Impact is an amazing game engine, and I would recommend it to anyone.
  • Paint.Net, my hands for art.  I’m not much of an artist but I do have a bit of a ‘look’ going on with what I create and I’m getting to like it.
  • Google Docs for idea management.  An aside:  this LD will mark my first full year of game development, starting with LD 24 (Evolution).  The game I started then was rough, unplayable – no one could play it except for me on my machine, and stupid.  But it was a game!  It got me into game development in a big way.  It also started the whole ‘idea management’ thing for me.  When the theme is announced, which is always a really big deal, I get up from my desk, stretch, and maybe take a walk.  I let the idea rattle around in my skull for a while, around an hour maybe, and start fleshing out ideas.  I use a blank doc and write whatever I want.  Any idea at all.  As I do that, the good separate themselves from the bad, and the great rise to the top.  It really helps me organize my thoughts and keep a steady track.
  • Movie may be Kick-Ass 2, Paranoia, or 2 Guns.  It is a new tradition for me to see a movie on the evening of the LD start, to give me some inspiration and cool ideas.  The fist time I did this was for LD 25 (You Are the Enemy).  I saw The Hobbit, and came up with my ‘Unleashed! Son of Kracken’ game that is still my favorite game I have ever made.  I decided to keep the tradition going…but there don’t seem to be many good movies out there today.  I’ll have to figure something out.
  • My Piano is really just a cheap keyboard, but I’m going to try to make some music on it anyway.  My goal this time around is mechanical and program simplicity, so I can create the game and then focus on the art and music.  I am a very good programmer, but not a good artist or musician, so I need to work on those things.  Plus, they really bring the game together Lebowski.

Good luck to all who are in the Compo and Jam, and as always, looking forward to the theme announcement!

First Timers

Hi,

We are two brothers who will be entering the JAM.

  • Unity3D
  • Photoshop and Illustrator

My primary goal is to finish the game on theme and on time, fun and bug free will be a bonus. Expect some great original art and absolute silence.

Hello Reyn, Clem, and others

I’m in… I think… I’m in ?

This time, I’ll be alone ! “Yeah, again a fuckin’coder who will make his own (ugly) art \o/”

I will use Haxe-OpenFL for the Language with alway FlashDevelop, and for the graphics, I really don’t know… I’ll probably switch between PyxelEdit and Gimp !

Ah ! And for the sound I’ll use BFXR for the sound and I don’t know for the music, YEAH >< !

I’m not really really ready but never mind, I do it for the fun \o/ !

So Wait and See… !

Mayyyyybe.

I’ll be at a LAN party for about half the time so I’ll not be using my usual setup… whatever the hell that is. (It would have been C + SDL + libsackit + maybe OpenGL if I were.)

  • Platform: MegaZeux
  • Sound: Audacity
  • Music: SchismTracker

Aiming to do typical DoZ crap for this LD really.

Yeah.

First time Ludum Dare

Hi! My name is Saulo and this is my first time in Ludum Dare. So let me try do some game interesting (or not) in this weekend, in so little time. I am a researcher in Computer Science, Games, Artificial Intelligence, Distributed Computing and Cyber Art. I am a hobbyist in game development. In general I only develop part of simple games to implement some algorithms of artificial intelligence and other techniques.

Well, let me say what I will use to make my first game in Ludum Dare:

Image Capture: A camera and a scanner to capture images that I will use or create. I’m thinking if I will draw or what.

Sound FX and Music: I will use my Sansung S3 mini to capture I playing my guitar or making some sounds. May be I will use SFXR too. I don’t know yet.

Operationg System: GNU/Linux Ubuntu 13.04 and graphic environment Gnome3.

Graphic manipulation: GIMP and Inkscape.

Sound manipulation: Audacity.

Programming: Android Development Tool (ADT), Programming Language Java and LibGDX. I will make a web version.

That is it, for while, and a good LD for all.

Saulo.

First LD – Hopes to have time

This is my first LD, and I hope to have time to participate (I have other things to do as well).

  • Language: C# (XNA)
  • IDE: Visual Studio 2010
  • Art: Photoshop & Flash
  • Sound: SFXR
  • Music: Still don’t know if I’ll make, maybe some simple background music.

Sorry I’m using XNA, because I know some of you can’t run it on your computers =\

Lately I also gained experience in communicating using TCP protocoles, so I hope to include it in the game (like for a multiplayer option).

Good luck for all of the other competitors, I’m sure you’ll do amazing things 😀

You could use MonoGame instead. AFAIK it’s very similar to XNA.

Update !

I’m In !

Okay I already said it in my last post. I updated my personal code library today and that will be what I will be using this time.

Language/Framework : C++ / SFML
IDE : vim/bash
Image : GIMP
Sound : sfxr

My library is hosted at github. Good luck to all =)

I’m in

Finally, after years of planning to participate, this weekend will be my first Ludum Dare.
I’ll be using cocos2d-html and Coffeescript.

This sounds like a perfect time to try out that Twitter, so maybe I’ll tweet about my (mis)adventures at @ch_schwartz.

Can’t wait to get started.

I’ll be in!

Hey, guys!

I’ve been making PC Indie games since 2011 and this will be my first time entering a competition, to see if  I can make a game before the time runs out.

I’ll be joining this LD Jam for the first time now. Probably going to stream my development HERE!

The tools I am going to be using:

  • Coding: Multimedia Fusion 2
  • Painting: Paint.NET and Paint.SAI
  • Sound: Most sound databases around the internet.
  • Music: FL Studio 11

See you there

I’m In, first Ludum Dare!

Ok lots of thinking and i’m in, alone but in.

Will be using Unity 3d with blender as graphic and Language as javascript.

Nervous but i hope i do ok for my first time.

Edit: And i will use sfxr for sound and paint for textures.

Let’s get this started, All the best to everyone

I Dare You to Jam!

Hey hey,

We’re in!  This is going to be the first ever game jam for our team of three.  Between us we have an artist, a music composer and a programmer.

We’re planning to use Unity 3D as our primary development platform with all of the game code written in C#.  For music, our composer will be using Logic and our artist will be using Illustrator.

We can’t wait to see what everyone creates!  Good luck and have fun jammin’!

I’m in

3rd #LD48 and so far I’ve gotten better each one. Let’s see if we can keep that trajectory :3

This time will be first one using Unity, probably with the NGUI plugin, and also maybe 2D Toolkit.

Have an idea of what I want make basically irrespective of the theme, and so will just shoehorn the theme in there somehow!
