Aquasplash, #LD34 entry

Hi, this is my 3rd Ludum Dare and the 1st I’m doing the compo.

As I have little artistic skills, I tried something I could build with only geometric forms and simple UI.

This is a digital version of a physical game I used to play during childhood, Aquaplay. It’s a case full of water and it has 2 buttons that push the water thus pushing the ball inside.

This is a basketball type game, so the player that makes 22 points first, wins.

Bittersweet Defeat

...although I wish it had been a little LESS barren!!

A tiny, untextured hero jumps LEFT or RIGHT around a rugged, barren landscape.

With less than two hours to go, I’ve realized that there’s no clean solution to some of my problems short of starting over with something like Box2D.  With no gameflow or state management implemented and no host configured (which would by themselves take an hour or two even if the gameplay was finished), it looks like this is the end of my run.

It’s been a truly great couple of days getting to this point.  While I’m a little bummed there’s nothing to upload, I’m genuinely proud of what I managed to get done, and the huge amount that I learned along the way.

Tech was:

  • Rails (application setup) – would replace with Node next time to simplify asset loading
  • Phaser by Photon Storm (main game engine) – would replace p2 physics with Box2D next time to solve above-mentioned issues
  • DAME editor by Dambots (map)
  • TexturePacker & PhysicsEditor by CodeAndWeb (texture atlases and collisions)
  • jQuery (minimal – just for loading and parsing the above)

To everyone who made it : Congrats!  I’m looking forward to playing your projects!
To everyone who is still sprinting : Go! Go! Go!

Best,
N

Enter the jam :)

Snowball??

This weekend I didn’t have much time for jammin’, but I did throw together a proof-of-concept of sorts for the idea I had. It fits both themes!

I’ve made a snowball that rolls around, which you steer with the left/right arrows, and picks up snow and gets bigger… Now how do I make this into a game??

…I might have to submit it to the Jam, but still, I’d like to add more to it… somehow.

My game torque is now live. No in-browser build yet though. I’m trying to figure out how to use dropbox to host a unity game.

Things are starting to work

Hey guys,

Ludumdare

It’s the first time we are working with unity.

Mostly I have finished the music part.

Also I have written a song with lyrics for the credits but at the moment I’am not totally happy with it. And don’t like to publish it.
Maybe I’ll work tomorrow again on it.

Finished

Scr2

That was hard.

Failed…but not

I think everything that could go wrong from a time management perspective did go wrong for me.  As such, there’s no chance of finishing anything, really.  But I don’t consider it a failure.  I did get an idea for a game mechanic that I think will work really, really well on both mobile and desktop.  I have a very rough tech demo of it (nothing worth playing) and plan on spending the next week working on it.

Bleh, such a stressful weekend.

Good luck with that then 😀 Hope to see it once it is finished.

Coming along

Spent way too much time today messing around with shaders and tweaking particles and graphics. I’m glad I opted to not do my own modelling and texturing this time.

At least the game is playable and let’s you grow christmas trees and start fires. Tomorrow it’s all about evil snowmen chasing the player + menus and instructions.

Fourth time’s the charm?

It will have to be a jam game, but I might actually finish this one…haven’t gotten bored yet. Helps that it’s a thinly-veiled excuse to play with a new algorithm: the new flocking stuff published a year ago July by Daniel Pearce et al. Got the movement and the flocking working (and programmer-art trees), so that leaves me the rest of tonight and tomorrow for actual gameplay… Here’s what I have so far: http://www.arestlessmind.org/starling-burst/1-movement/

Finished!!!

Just finished my first Ludum Dare Compo!!!

It was an amaaaaaaaaaaaaazing experience! Count me in for next one :)

Go try it!

ChickenSpin_Screen01

The “Bee” game is here.

I usually spend most of my time on coding, but, frankly, this time I managed to spend most of it on graphics. Yeah I know I have a long way to go, but I’m still pretty proud with what I’ve got. What an awesome LD, good luck on everybody, your games are awesome!!!

ld34-ingame

A quick preview of what I managed to accomplish. You can find a deeper preview here.

Didn’t finish, But I’m Happy

Title_Screen

I didn’t finish making my game, I never got to incorporate the “Growing theme” very well, all I did was you play as a beanstalk creature. However I am happy because I didn’t a lot of time, I had to babysit on Saturday. 10/10 Will do again!

Bubble Nibble Done!

My first LD compo entry. Navigate your bubble to the finish line and avoid the larger bubbles and other objects. There’s multiple strategies to win!

Mutiple versions available: Web (firefox tested to work… chrome doesn’t), WebGL (freezes occasionally,… doesn’t have sound/music), Windows (tested), Linux (not tested), Mac (not tested).

Finished my game, Celebration of Jand. There is alot that I did not get to do/know how to do, but I certainly learned alot. Please rate it so I know how to make it better!

Almost there, but maybe next time. LD#34 Growth and 2 Buttons

First time in the comp and was entering the compo with growth. Limiting buttons to space bar and point click with mouse, using just Unity 3D. I started work on the game this morning and sadly couldn’t get it working fully, the “growth” mechanic doesn’t work as planned. So here are some screens instead, but a failed game.

Its 12 little gardens in which you should have been able to grow coloured cubes, on either of the 3 axis using “space” to change which axis. Each colour of cube grows differently. The green blocks were the next stage with revolutions instead which I got working. The black boxes absorb and remove your other coloured growth blocks. Also had goals, to push balls around into goals while avoiding losing your growth blocks. Some parts were revolving to make it more difficult and each garden introduced a new idea on how to manipulate the growth blocks.

THRUST – Race and beat other players!

THRUST is a space racing game, in which you will have to avoid the walls and try to pickup as many cargo crates as you can. To do that, you can only go up and down (two buttons theme).

Players scores will be saved online and the best 15 will be displayed in-game! You will also be able to find the whole score table by clicking here!

I made my game from scratch in C++ using SFML lib. I used Gimp for graphics resources, Audacity and online generators for the music and SFXR for the sounds.

We’re all in pain right now, don’t worry, it’s the normal state of affairs :-)

yay, another failed ld.

IMG_0301

I haven’t finished anything for a LD since mini-44, which was like 10 years ago maybe? I dunno. Anyways, another one to add to the stack of unfinished games. I think I am closing in on something that might work, but I really need to spend more time on these is the issue. I tracked my time on this game, and it was only 7 hours. I think normally for finished ones I spend about 16-18 or so? Ah well.

Had fun though, spent some time learning game theory stuff that I didn’t know before, and made a kinda neat card back that I might be able to use for a game eventually.

Bonzai growing: end of second day!

It’s time for a little progress log for this second day of jamming! For my second game made with Unity I’m taking ages to make anything work but I’m still happy about where it’s heading compared to my previous participations to the ld!

  • planters are now randomized and their designs a bit more polished
  • player can grow branches with left click and stop their growth with right click
  • trunks start to look like bonzai trunks
  • sound is implemented

To finish tomorrow absolutely:

  • grow other branch starts on click
  • grow leaves on branches so they don’t look dead
  • make the reset function / generate new tree work properly
  • if possible, allow to cut some branches to restart their growth and subdivide them

And if time for it: add some polish, tweak the growing algorithm a bit more, etc…

– Explosions.

PLAY THE GAME

I’m done!!!

And I present to you… WAR GROWTH!!

It’s a game where you have to push buttons to prevent people from pushing two very dangerous buttons! Weird eh?!

The build might be broken as I’m having issues with Windows at the moment. Please let me know if it is.
Otherwise, Let me know what you think of the game!

I’m tired now, good night everyone and good luck to all of those who still want to upload their game for the compo!!

WAR GROWTH

All Done!

That’s 2 LDs in the books!

This LD was a lot more comfortable for me, since I had an idea for the theme and was sketching ideas for the levels within 10 minutes of the theme being released. Also, since this was my second LD, I kinda had a better idea of when to start working on which parts of the game and when to start pushing out demos to my friends. All in all, I think it came out very nicely!

EURIDIAN STUDIOS
Core Game was done using Construct 2 Personal Edition
Graphics all done using Paint.NET
Audio (my voice) using Audacity
Base of player and enemy ships were initially designed using https://www.arrall.com/partart1/ and then touched up and re-colored using Paint.NET

Main Game “Normal” destroy asteroids and ships to entice Boss ship and then Destroy Boss to complete game.
Completing game unlocks Survival Mode every 25,000 points and stronger Boss is unleashed how long can you survive.

First Ludum Dare FINISHED!!!!

For my first Ludum Dare, I think I did pretty well, and I think I managed my time well.

Hope you enjoy and I’ll probably see you next competition:

http://radian-inc.itch.io/help-ima-cactus

It’s all over!

I finished. It’s a tower defense game where a possum grows after it reaches the end, which is unhealthy food. The possum is more deadly the bigger it is. The source code is terrible, mostly because I never usually make tower defense games and it was a whole new “structure” for the code. This was my first Ludum Dare and I had fun doing it and I will most likely do the next one.

A failed compo, but a productive Jam?

soulless

There’s too much missing from this for me to submit this to the compo. I haven’t even started sound effects, and I would really like to add in more types of monsters… chests and some deco.

Not to mention any sort of story. However, I’m really happy with the basic gameplay this time around.

Cheers to all of you who finished in time for the compo! This will be my first time joining you Jammers out there!

Make that extra day count!

MONSTER KING

You probably want to slep now, but you can also play my game:

MONSTER KING

Alternating failure and success?

First LD – Success

Second LD – Failure

Third LD – Success

This LD  – Failure

So the premise of my game was to successfully manager, or grow, a business. It was a simple design with only 4 tabs. The problem arose when I realized about 5 hours ago that all I had worked on was the UI. While the individual buttons and sliders has functionality, they affect nothing but move the numbers around. The goal was to implement an economy but now that I look at it, I would’ve probably needed all day today to do that.

Untitled-2

Because I started with no engine, all of the ui elements had to written in Java along with the rendering code for them. So next time I will try to get away from the gui style gameplay and try to either a scroller or top down game that requires a lot less base engine and backend functionality.

Exactly what happened to me. Had a “great” idea about an hour after the theme was announced worked on it all night. Woke up the next morning and realised one element was unfeasible; scaled back my scope. Continued working until around 3 PM Saturday. Realised my game had no actual challenge to it. Decided to say fuck it, did a little more polish and then called it done around 9PM. Overall the second worst thing I’ve made for a Ludum Dare .

Finished my first Ludum Dare

Finally got that Unity Build working the way I wanted it to work. Ludum Dare was a lot of fun and I’m quite proud that I accomplished finishing the game.

Sure it’s not the best game ever, but who expects that after 2 days? I’ll play the other entries starting tomorrow. Really want to know, what others made in the same amount of time, but right now I’m just to exhausted. So good night everyone and congratulations on finishing your project!

My friends are retarded, help me !!

Hey guys we need your help! After hours of working we are now at the point of naming stuff and we kinda got into a fight. Since we aren`t making any progress we want you guys to help us.

Should we call the flying part of our hive Skyspawn or Skyspawned ?

As you see we are not good with names since we ended up with this name but we still want to solve it, so please write what you think in the comments (you can also add different names you think would be proper to name the flying part of the hive)

Be mindful of their companion preferences and match them up accordingly. Keep the population growing and watch the field fill up with flowers of passed loved ones.

Wasteful Revenge is finished!

Hey, you! Do you like wasting food? No? Well, that’s okay, because in Wasteful Revenge, you only waste virtual food.

In this game, you play as a humiliated farmer seeking revenge the farmer’s way: by growing food and shooting it at people. This was my first “real” Ludum Dare event and it was very fun! I’m looking forward to reading your feedback.

FETA FELES Is Done!

fetafeles_thumbnail_cropped

So yeah! The game is finnish-ed!

I’m kind of proud of this one; It’s the my first game to have a tone that isn’t detached and cartoony.

Strangely enough, absolutely no content was cut out. I knew what the game was going to be almost from the beginning.

The main inspirations were Undertale(surprise, surprise) and Tomodachi Life (Or, at least, it’s what gave me the idea of Feles).

That’s about all I have to say about it.

Last minute changes…

I have over an hour left, lets add transition from menu to game. In 3D (the game is basically 2d), with Quaternions. Oh well, should have expected this outcome (git reset). Anyway, I’m done, going to prepare builds and get some sleep.

Here is my entry

I finished my game, Play here but when i uploaded the sounds are gone! but this time i don’t gave up,the game is not 100% that i wanted but is playable (with some bugs and without sound).I’ll continue developing the game after this Ludum Dare and improve it until 100% so follow my page in GameJolt Here, my blog Here ,Good luck for everyone!

Postmortem Repair Runner

Well finished my LD34 entry. This run wasn’t to bad, I decided to give making a game in 3d a crack.

Think I need to put some time into improving my Maya LT skills but over all not a bad little game.

Might also be worth having a play with FPS character controls before next Ludum Dare too.

I created a time lapse here:

With just 4 minutes to go: I’m IN!

Growing Gertrude

Growing Gertrude progress so far:

The aim is to grow Gertrude, a simple amoeba, by eating smaller creatures and avoiding larger ones.. until Gertrude is big enough to eat the octopus and get the treasure it’s protecting!

Almost all the coding is done; I just need to add the end game states and menus (and tweak everything to make it more fun). Tomorrow, I’ll finish the coding and add SFX/music made with Audacity/LMMS.

My first/simple game is done xD

I had a really fun time of finally finishing a game with 5 levels and am proud of what I have done with animation and drawing as best as I can for the time I had.

LD34: Day 2

Got quite a bit done, today. I made skeletons (basics, just graphic and stats) for all of the enemies, and set up just about all of the skills of the characters and the enemies. As well as that, I also got all of the weapons and armors that the characters can use set up, and even made a couple of animations for two of the skills that needed them.

I just need my map, and to set up the actual battles, now. It’s an arena game, so it will be very simple to set up. Balancing is not a primary issue right now, but if I do have excess time when I’m officially done, I’ll do it.

RPGs are quite viable to make in a 72 hour time period–especially if they’re simple. That’s one thing I’ve learned this Ludum Dare. To keep my scope as simple as I can, especially this early in game development.

EDIT: This was supposed to be posted yesterday.

How it ended up avoiding being posted, I have no clue.

I’m soooooo tired. Anyway, it’s pretty simple, but at least I got something done. My first LD, so I’m happy enough with that.

Use A (attack) and D (defend) for controls. It gets faster and faster as you level.

Sphaera!

I am finally done, my first LD and my first finished game really.

I present to you, Sphaera:

sphaera2 sphaera3

A game of spheres, about spheres, with spheres, moving spheres, we have them all! Spheres!

You can play it:

Web

or download it:

Windows/Linux/OsX

or look at the source(oh don’t you do it if you like your eye-sight):

This was really an experience. Had a lot of fun, learned a lot about spherical coordinates, good code design, energy drink sugar levels and vector maths. I rewrote all of the game code(except like a few interfaces) during the second day. I did this because all the “temporary” solutions and “on the go” design in the original started to be too much.

What to do better next time:

  • Study the library/language/dev-environment prior to actually starting. I spent a lot of time reading through libGDX during the first day.
  • Plan ahead, write good code, don’t be lazy. Maybe prototype a bit in the beginning to figure out if the game would be fun/playable/easily implementable in 48h.
  • Buy a more comfortable chair….
  • Think about possible bugs/hard to solve situations prior to writing any code. For example I had a problem with defining a direction of a sphere on another sphere. Using a normalized 3D vector in cartesian coordinates perpendicular to the radius vector of the spheres center works, but is overly complicated since then moving the smaller sphere on the surface of the bigger sphere involves finding a cross product and rotating the radius vector as well as the direction vector. Using an azimuth angle and spherical coordinates is not viable since, well poles and stuff. Where does your compass point at the pole?
  • More pen and paper planning.

What did go right:

  • I learned alot.
  • It was fun.
  • I am fairly satisfied with how the game ended up. It was supposed to work way different. However I like it this way and I think I managed to make it playable(in the very last hours :D).

Wheeeeeewwwww!

Second time playing, first time finishing.  Throwing my hat in the compo to boot!  Tried to use both the themes in this one and kept everything as minimal as possible so that I could get it done.  Didn’t get to add everything I wanted to but it came out as an interesting little game.  Hope it’s not too confusing, I added some instructions at the start so I hope that helps but if I had more time I’d add a bit of a tutorial progression and probably some more goals other than high score :)

Controls:

J and K – hold to scroll, tap to edit the rule

Space or click – start, restart, make things grow!

Another Ludum Dare

Icon

I really surprised myself when I noticed that this is my 5th Ludum Dare entry, and also by how much better I’ve got a programming games. I finally managed to accomplish my goal of making a proper AI in a game, in this case one which decides (just as the player does) what tiles to attack and build on, while making sure that  there aren’t any deficits in resource production. Yes, they cheat a little by being given resources if they run out. But its still a working AI and that’s what matters. I still haven’t found a way of doing good UI or music but iv put some sound fx in so that’s something. Anyway, I look forward to playing your games and here is mine if you want to play it.

this game also features…

A Totally cool background!

A Fancy Ancient mode, setting the game to look like a really old movie!

The coolest protagonist you would ever want on a wire coat hanger!
