LD36 August 26–29, 2016

Coming to a close

I’ve been at school all day, so I have to use these last 3 hours to do map editing and refining. As well as Sound Effects.. Hope I can make this work!

It’s alive!

Yeah, we’ve made it! We’re tired and exhausted, and I personally don’t want to do any coding for at least three another days. We’re incredibly happy how it turned out though, and though we’re low on energy, we’re high on joy and satisfaction.

Obligatory screenshot and links follow:

The jam entry
The web version (I hope it’ll work, it tends to break sometimes :( )

Thanks for the experience, maybe we’ll see each other next time!

First time that I participated to LD !

That is the first time that I participated to Ludum Dare and although I do not like the theme I think my game is cool. : )

I liked to make it !

New update! =)

Version 0.8 is here, the positions is a little buggy right now until my code-master arrives from work in an hours time… I hacked away at it like a true artist would 😛

Anyways, you can race now.. the laps count up and such but no end goal in place just yet haha!

Download it here: WindowsExe

Done!

Hasn’t been posted yet, just waiting for my friend to finish on the music otherwise the game’s done. Maybe a few more rooms/polishing a bit with the remaining time, not sure.

Overall I’m fairly happy with the outcome but I think our idea was too ambitious, needless to say, it works. That’s all that matters I guess, and it has an ending!

Added HTML port!

First time I have submitted a game. I probably should have learnt some Box2D before I stated, then I would have realised this game isn’t all that suited for Box2D.

High light of the weekend was probably rummaging around my flat looking for things to make sound effects with, in the end I settled for boots and rocks.

Hope you enjoy the game (Hopefully I will make something better for December).

this.unlikelyToComplete = true;

The second set of errands cost much time… >.>

I probably will be unable to get much anything done…

I was iffy about doing a LD this time around, given the amount of IRL interruptions I’ve had. My gut instinct was not to do one. I am actually pretty mad, too, because this game was doing far better than my submission for LD35. And then I lost SEVERAL hours to either falling asleep (due to strenuous IRL tasks, and screwed-up sleep schedule) , or non-optional IRL tasks. Gonna bust my @$$ to get something done before the jam ends, but it’s certainly not going to be much. There will be NO time for me to fix the beam projection bug.

The ZIGGURARK!

Hey folks! We made it! Here’s our game for the jam: The ZIGGURARK!

ss1

As an Explorer controlling half-cut, genetically recombined animals you have to wander through the dungeon of Tezcacoatlus, the Assembler God.

He’s a badass guy who has The Tool, an ancient relic capable of cutting animals in half creating hybrids. You take control of one hybrid and your goal is to get to the end of the eight levels in order to save your own life.

Hybrids has the good and bad sides of the animals they are made of: the body of a gorilla is extremely powerful, but its legs are slow.

…but what if you have the body of a gorilla running with the legs of a rabbit? You go FAST.
ss3

Move around with the arrow keys and fight with WASD, a-là Binding of Isaac. There are wooden crates throughout the levels: if you find one and you break it, you can recombine half of your hybrid with a new animal.

Because, you know, if you’re struggling with a turtle-rabbit hybrid maybe you need a stronger half… :-)

We are a team of two and we coded the game in HaxeFlixel, with art made in Pyxel Edit. It was our first game together (and absolute first with Haxe) and, even if it’s not as nearly as polished as we wanted, we had tons of fun making it. We made it in about 36 hours of work.

Entry page

Play it in your browser (OSX/Windows builds in the entry page!)

We hope you like it!

I really look forward to playing your games…

Cheers!

Super Egyptian UFO Cat Pyramid Overlord 2000 BC – Timelapse Video!

Well, that’s another Ludum Dare weekend down. For those of you who did the compo – congratulations! And to our friends in the jam, godspeed in these last few hours. I’ve spent some time today playing a handful of games, and as always I’m amazed at the creativity and dedication of this community.

Myself, I had a great time, and made a game that I’m really proud of. This was my 6th Ludum Dare, and the 2nd time that I’ve finished in time for a compo entry. As usual, I’ve put together a timelapse of the weekend:

logic puzzles

In vacation, I hadn’t time or computer to participate to this LD.

But I had a train journey, and during this journey, I made some logic puzzles as I read in old magazines.

So here is my entry:

(sorry if my English isn’t good…)

One say to Roland: — Stop to make the fool, that’s not the good way for you to serve me.

Eustache burst out laughing and say to him: — Well, you imitate me perfectly!

From Roland, Eustache and Hugues, who is the king, who is the squire and who is the mountebank?

—Don’t you think he is misnomer for a simple sailor?

—Not if he wants to take your place, reply john.

From Achab, John and Abraham, who is the sailor, who is the captain and who is the harpooner?

—Hands up, give the bag, and no joke!

—Not so fast Johny! Finally I found you…

—Oh Everett, you have come at the right time, I have something for you…

From Billy, Everett and Johny, who is the bounty hunter, who is the outlaw and who is the postal worker?

The detective says: — So, miss Allister, you have seen miss Riversdale in the kitchen yesterday. Was it before or after the murder?

From miss Allister, miss Haskings and miss Riversdale, who is the paid companion, who is the stove and who was the hostess?

—I knew Sarah just after I left Abilene but before I became gold digger.

—I knew Emmy on tour at Chicago.

—Me, I never leave my city.

From Jane, Sarah and Emmy, one is danseuse cancan, one is gold digger and one is outlaw; and one is from Abilene, one is from Boston and one is from Chicago.

Do you know who do what and where is from?

—There are sometimes strange coincidences. We are in a tiny island but we are from the same country and we have almost the same name.

—Yes, and I have the shorter name as is the name of my city; but the name of my job isn’t…

—Me, the name of my city start with the same letters as the name of my job!

—How boring is that! Reply Léonard, annoyed at having nothing to say.

From Léonard, Léon and Léopold, one is lampiste*, one is stenographer, and one is poiçonneur*; one live in Lyon, one live in Marseille and one live in Strasbourg.

Do you know who do what and where he live?

*I keep french words because I didn’t found a translation. A lampiste was someone who was in charge of the gaz lights (in a train station for example); A poiçonneur was someone who punched the bus tickets.

Ludum Dare game browser updated for LD36

I’ve updated the Ludum Dare game browser for all the LD36 games submitted so far. It will automatically update as games come in. Because this LD doesn’t have any ratings, I’ve changed the sort order to be completely random! This page lists all the games submitted along with the image provided by the developer. You can scroll through the entire list on a signle page. Enjoy

It’s time to play a game.

First of all, anyone find it strange how many people saw the theme and made a game about robots and aliens? History channel poisoned our minds man…This theme was a bad choice. You can basically make what ever game you want and just add an aesthetic coat to it and boom you followed the theme(some haven’t even done that) A good theme to me is one that encourage new and interesting game mechanics to develop unlike this one.

Anyway I finished my fourth ludum dare game in a row! This one I am slightly disappointed with, I still have not learned the lesson of feature creep and scoping your game. I over stepped my boundaries and had to scale down my game, cut down on some features. The thing that stings the most is I never figured out the end goal of my game so it’s a bit like a sandbox really. I also learned that I need to improve my knowledge of photoshop and practice more with my tablet. It takes me way too long to produce art. I don’t know the proper procedure with digital art to achieve the results I want but that will hopefully change as I start learning more.

PLAY MY GAME NOW!

And btw if any of you guys want me to play your game I will play it and leave a comment. I left a comment on every game I rated in previous jams so you can count on me. I can not play though VR/Mac/Linux/Iphone games though only windows or web/webgl.

Temple Plunder

Finally finished my game for the 72 hour jam – Temple Plunder

Last time I took part I did a first person game, so this time I wanted to try and make a character and have a 3rd person / top down game. It ended up taking me nearly the whole day just to get the character done as I had to remind myself how to rig and animate, I guess it was a good way to remember but I feel my game was a bit too ambitious, even though I did get it finished.

The aim of the game is to get as much loot as possible within the time limit of 5 minutes. As you pick up loot your bag gets heavier, so you have to keep making trips back to the cart. So you want to plan the best way to get the loot, and which loot to get first (get the heavy loot on the way back). There are traps of course, its a game with a temple what do you expect?

Its a pretty simple game, and nothing original. I think it was way too big a project for me alone, as I only just managed to finish in for the 72 jam and missed out on some final polish. I am happy with how it turned out though, as I did the character first and was really behind on the mechanics, and was starting to think I wouldnt even have a game, just a poorly animated character.

Things I could add if I took this further:

  • Enemies (living statues)
  • Combat – being able to throw the bag to stun enemies / other tools
  • More traps / levers for timed doors
  • Power ups / upgrade (bigger bag, faster movement)
  • some kind of mining element
  • more character animations (there was 2 I was lazy)
  • add actual textures instead of flat colours (even though they did work quite well)
  • add more loot
  • Maybe add a story element
  • different temples / tombs / dungeons

Things to do / things I have learned for the next ludum dare:

  • Learn how to make my own music
  • make a much small / polished game
  • try to stay away from characters (or get better at doing them)
  • maybe find some people to group up with
  • plan better
  • get the mechanics working first to make sure the game is fun
  • learn how to do vfx / make the game look more pretty with fancy stuff
  • Actually make a title / logo instead of using just text
  • Think of a game name that isn’t generic

I would really appreciate some feedback on my game – I can take harsh criticism, so go nuts.

the webplayer version has some small lighting issues

The ultimate prize

George and the Mighty Ancient’s Technology (VR game !)

Well it’s not the mighty game I was expecting, but I least I finished this 48h VR game. It’s an exploration game with a small scenario including alternate endings. There is also a classic PC version for those who don’t have a Google Cardboard. Post mortem coming soon (why did I spent time to make 10  different type of rock instead of polishing the existing asseeeets) and maybe a more polished version if I have time.
