Day 2ish Update

Just got up. Managed to generate me some random blips and dings that I shall label as sound effects. The core gameplay is nearly complete. One feature is still not functional… i.e. the sensor that will tell you if you are close to treasure. It’s a player feedback thing so if it doesn’t get in there will be some annoyed players.

Check it out here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12926434/WebPlayer/WebPlayer.html

My plans:

– eat something

– try and fix this sensor

– add some simple enemies

– figure out if I’m going to have ramping difficulty

– draw stuff

– make a kickass loop track

I think I’ll have scrambled eggs.

Day 2: Prologue

Good mornin’ Ludum Dare. I see many of you made a lot more progress over the course of the night; looks like I’d better get crackin’.

I was planning on scrambling some eggs, but there aren’t enough eggs in the house, so I’m just sipping a cup of OJ until I decide on something else to eat. The OJ is almost empty, too. I repeat, the OJ is almost empty.

A list of things I would like to get done today:

  • Thruster particles (meaning, entity destruction and creation calls from other entities too)
  • Sound effects
  • Screen switching at the edges
  • A scrolling background for the world (perhaps stars?)
  • Some enemies
  • Some pickups

I’ll probably end up doing them in a completely random order, too.

Collisions, destruction & stupid interactions

Finished the basic engine, still have lots of gfx to do & to do the “storyline” :)

I love your pixels, but the door feels out of place somehow

Your pixel-art is sweet but as madk says, you should polish that door. I’m looking forward to play this game!

just add a tiny frame and tiny frame shadow will fix it.

Thanks for all the comments : I will fix these parts asap :)

I think I cooked too much food.

So it’s 3 am and I have a large serve of pasta, baked beans and cheese.

Followed by a tasty microwave chocolate muffin blob.

So far I’ve been going alright in LD, had to go to a 21st party which knocked off 5 hours. However my game is currently playable (though not too user friendly) and you can have a look HERE! Feedback would be great!

The idea? You fly the SpaceBrick, and discover all the things the universe has for you to smash, and all the ways to smash them. Very stupid, but hopefully fun.

I think that takes “disgusting” to a whole new level ;D

My cooking is not pretty, and I messed up the baked beans.

that is A muffin !!! cool

To craft a story

The background technical code is now 100% done. Now I’m working solely on content creation.

This looks really cool. I really like that you can recognise the rooms even with such minimal character art. Is this going to be crime solving game?

Yes and no. It’s more like a crime “discovery” game. The crime gets solved whether you do so intentionally or not, but whether or not you’ve got any idea what’s going on is dependent on whether you looked at the clues. The more clues you find, the more of the plot is revealed to you.

Starting to take shape

I’m sailing around the map, woo!

This looks like one I’ll be eager to try out. Rock on!

It’s pretty much a game now!

It’s pretty much a real game now! It’s turned into an action packed digging cave thing.

You now have enemies that chase you down when you steal a gem. The more gems you steal, the more enemies that spawn. You can bank the points from gems and kill all the enemies by taking the gems to your start point and you get more points the more gems you hand in at once. Which means that there is a nice little risk reward mechanic in there.

I’d like to throw them roguelike elements into the mix if I have the time. Maybe you can find stairs that you can take to get to new levels to find more gems? Maybe allow the player to buy things if they find some stairs?

Operation: Piggyback

Codename: Der Soldat

I got all the art i need.
Now: some BFBC2.
Later: Coding

Will be done in JavaScript for Canvas with my lib http://gamejs.org

breakfast time

Obligitory food and desk post
Yes, that is tea, gum, and toast with Peanut butter

Now, for a shower, and back to work on teh game

The game idea

I’ve drawn the sprites and written some extremely messy code, so I’m going to take a break now. But before I do, I thought I’d blog about what I hope my game will turn into.

It’s a 2D puzzle game inspired by Zelda: Twilight Princess’ ice block puzzle, but with a time limit to keep things interesting :)

I will be using C# to create it and it’s been going well until I got hit with a problem with the drawing of my sprites. Hopefully this will be fixed before tomorrow so I  can work on the physics.

First glances

YEEAAAAHHH

It took me a lot of time to get an idea, but now that I have one everything is going well!

Progressing With Stuff

Been working solidly since the last post.  Now have the movement stuff working around the game map.  Implemented 3 game difficulties and no just have 2 player co-op then all the in game logic

Pictures to follow

Progress Check In

I’ve been working more on the map and decided to have a little progress up date. This is me on an EVA outside of the station near the docked space craft (you can walk in it). There is a bunch more stuff added and I’m slowly ticking things off my list. The recreation area at the top is somewhat small but I guess astronauts will have access to the tourist areas facilities which will have a casino ect.

Here is an updated map:

Those things to the left are the hygiene stuff I was talking about. The place is still small but I’ve got a central hub to add which all the other facilities will sprout from. My list is still full of some quite large and interesting pieces to add.

‘Tis a new day

And I’m going whole hog on the LD48.

Breakfast: Tea & Toast.

Gameplay: Ambitious.

Technology: Very Ambitious.

Yum.

That breakfast seems so…civilized. I had a cupcake and a Coke. May yours fuel your ambition!

Magnificent progress (NOT)

I can both move and draw rectangles. Maybe I can concentrate a bit more on gameplay for once by using only crude rects for visuals (which I can hopefully upgrade towards end of the project)…

Progress – 1

Well, after a slow start I now have a tile engine with light controls!

And of course – I made lunch a while ago:

Farfalle with aubergine, yoghurt, tahini and basil – yum!

Hope to have more things soon – sprites, gameplay and sound! stay tuned.

Good luck to everyone!

Daniel

Cube farm

It took longer than I thought, but after a couple of hours I’ve finally sorted out all the cube mesh uv, vertex, and triangle mappings. I can can now map a 2D texture to an array of cubes.  The images you see are just placeholders until I can generate the real ones.  I had to have something to test with.  Now onto getting the clue text up and checking for victory but first… lunch!

Portrait Exploration is done

My LD entry is done. It’s a very small art game (2 minutes to get to the end) and it’s about a zoomed exploration of a black and white portrait that gains color once you pass your cursor on it. I’m kinda skeptical if it’s enjoyable or not, so please give me criticism about what you like or not, I might fix it on the spare hours.

With no futher undo, here’s the game: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-19/?action=preview&uid=2490

You’ll notice there is no sound, that’s because I didn’t to ruin the game with the awful music that I make, so either play the game silently or put a calm music on background.
