LD 38April 21–24, 2017

Finally some progress!

I finished up the basic of my game! Don't mind the art... I am not an artist xd At this point I am just goind with a finished game and not with a good game. It is my first ludum dare so i got a little bit caught up in stupid little things!

Meta Mondays

in an attempt to have to implement as few instruction codes as possible for my tile logic, I've been trying to come up with compound solutions for things like condition blocks with what I already have, Its been somewhat challenging. 5f3d10f80f[1].png fa91973696[1].png

I'm Out!

It's been a great Jam, but I've had to call it a day sadly! a case of ambition far outweighing my knowledge. It was a constant struggle to keep the game functioning until I just couldn't work out how to continue.

The original concept was an ant nest simulator, build the nest, protect and keep the queen alive... That became an ant arena game (scaling back the amount of work needed) but soon found that even that was going to be too much work for one weekend to keep ahead of the bugs. Either way, it's been a great experience and I got some good code written, from A* Pathfinding to Multithreading job queues.... First time I've had to drop out of a LD so far.... next time I'm gunna be ready! Role on LD39! and good luck to all those still in the compo! :D

Pretty much done at this point.

There are so many improvements I could make that I won't because I HATE the code I've written and I don't want to work with it any longer than I have to. Over the next four months I'm going to try and learn basic game structure when using a framework rather than an engine so that my next LD won't have such a gross codebase.

Day two

wip1.png I finished moving sprites to unity and setting up the map. Now I need to add actual puzzles and story. Also the game still lacks animations and sounds.

Stream

Probably Done... Gonna Wait to Upload Anywhere

I think my game "Planet Q" is finished. I haven't been posting any updates on here so I guess this is the first and last one until submission. Here's what my game looks like: Screen Shot 2017-04-23 at 10.44.37 AM.png and here's one of the puzzles (yes, this is a puzzle game) Screen Shot 2017-04-23 at 10.45.34 AM.png You'll get to see the rest once I upload it, which I am waiting to do because I don't think it's to my benefit to have the game uploaded just on my Itch.io page and have people playing it without rating it. But stay tuned for the finished thing!

It's finally playable

Since the last blog post we've added all the textures into the game! Also meteorite spawning is fixed now so it is fully random. eyJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczovL3RodW1iLmd5YXpvLmNvbS90aHVtYi8xMjAwL19mMTg3NDUwNzI0OTZhZTEzZjM1ZWEwNjRmMmMyMmQ4Ni1naWYuZ2lmIn0.K2Z3pYSWgS_4HHIzMk8RgFn2ksM

Right now, we want to add sound effects and music and give the earth a health bar, so we can add some difficulty to the game. And we're also going to add a menu screen, ofcourse.

Thanks for reading!

I need a hero !

Been working on the art of the game for some times now. What I got is my hero, ready to be animated.

2017-04-23_165341.jpg

The issue is... I don't have times to do everything for the compo. Will try, but I may end up doing the jam instead.

NB : The eyebrow have its own bone.

The World Became Smaller & Smaller But I Needed Wood & Food

Finally it has been done! The world is getting smaller and smaller and the void is closing you in. That does not affect your daily workday to obtain both wood and food.

Collect 38 wood (clever reference, i know) and get back to your home to win. However, you are getting hungry pretty fast, so dont forget to make farms! Also, the thing about the void closing you in, thats for real. Obtain that wood as fast as possible!

Complete the compounds based on the tips given at the bottom of the screen.

Neutralize them by making sure all electrons are bonded to another, and in a proper configuration.

You can drag atoms and scroll while dragging to rotate them.

Based on IGCSE Chemistry syllabus (ionic and covalent bonding), but you can figure out the game without taking chemistry classes.

Blocklings: Evolution

Disclaimer: What you are about to see is programmer art.

I started with brainstorming different ideas as such, all centered around economy of strokes (merely a time factor, hahah) and some sort of "blocky" head:

Screenshot from 2017-04-23 08-09-37.png

Eventually I settled on this (in game modulated to a soft neon-purple color):

Graphics Overhaul in Progress

With 10 hours remaining on the clock I'm knee-deep in redoing the placeholder graphics. It sucks if your character turns out to be twice as large as the placeholder and that influences the game code, but I think I have the most important issues resolved and can now focus on making everything pretty.

Hexcity

A brainfuck puzzle game

a08dcdc2faa32812fa714b0136925ab0.png

The goal of HexCity is to amass the highest amount of score. Simple enough.

Score

Each building you place will increase your score by this amount :

House : -1

Farm : -1

Mine : 1

Wind turbine : 1

Factory : 2

Market : 3

Bank : 5

Rocket Silo : 8

Placing Requirements

Here where the challenge lives : To place a building you need to meet every requirement that the building has.

House : For a worker to live, he simply needs an adjacent farm in order to eat.

Farm : A farm can be placed anywhere, except next to another farm.

Mine and Wind turbine : Both need only an adjacent worker house.

Factory : A factory needs an adjacent worker house, wind turbine and mine.

Market : A market needs an adjacent worker house, wind turbine and factory.

Bank : A bank needs an adjacent worker house, wind turbine, mine and market.

Rocket : A rocket silo needs and adjacent worker house, wind turbine, factory and bank.

Special tiles

You may have noticed that there is different tile colors. These are :

Light green : Grass (Normal tile)

Blue : Water (You can't build on this tile)

Dark green : Forest (Double score tile, this means if you build a market you get 6 points instead of 3, but if you build a farm you get -2 score since it's originally -1)

Beige : Sand (No score is calculated on this tile, this means building something with low score on this tile is ideal).

Interested in trying the puzzle when I submit it?

Make sure to follow me on LD

I have a working prototype!

I have something playable now in terms of one level. It would have been done sooner, if it weren't for a really easy to miss bug that plagued me for two hours yesterday. Glad I fixed it, because it was game-breaking. I currently have a win condition set up. All it's missing is a title screen and a Game Over screen. I would show some gameplay footage if I had the means to do screen capture. Didn't install the software for that ahead of time. I'll have it next time, though. For now, have a screenshot:

Cell game screenshot.png

The gray blob is the player, a white blood cell. The red and blue things are germs inside the body. Your goal is to use randomly-spawned colored pills to power up and kill germs of the same color by eating them. You take damage if you're the wrong color or if you're gray. Pills have a time limit on how long they stay active. Today, I'm going to get a title and Game Over screen working, as well as add some additional visual effects, sound, and maybe a biological hazard that you can't kill, but need to avoid if it shows up. Feeling good about this so far!

Wow.

I'm pretty much done with Polar Protector, still with about 10 hours to go. It's not the most impressive thing, but it's modest and I'm happy with it for my first Ludum Dare. Hooray!

Day 2: Llama's world will be ready soon!

Hi guys, how is the second day going?

We are working on the game mechanics, here you can find a little preview: game.gif

Blocklings: Flautist of Worlds

Spent probably too much time to record too little low-quality music, but here's the Blocklings theme. All I did was just fooling around with an ocarina-like instrument while severely sleep deprived, and then select about 15 or so of the takes for the soundtrack. My microphone (or recording set-up, not sure which...?) was introducing an undesirable buzz, so I had to do noise removal.

Not my first Ludum Dare, but before I always have someone talented for graphics in my team and I focused on programming. This time I had to create all the graphics by myself. But I think it's not that bad...

Game mechanics complete

The wind areas now have their final (?) visualization and the input handling is vastly improved as well. You can no longer launch the ship in any direction as often as you want. Instead there is a five second recharge time which is displayed on the ring around the ship when you hover the mouse over it.

ld32_progress3.png

I think that's all the time I have to spend on mechanics. Here's a video showing the new systems in action:

Right, now about that level design...

Hints

All plants now have a description which are shown in the plant-o-pedia. Unknown plants have a shorter description which will hint on how to create the plant. :rose:

Plan-o-pedia Screenshot.png

The 3 1/2 Seas

I've been hard at work on my game - The 3 1/2 Seas.

3halfseas.png

It's an exploration digital boardgame, pretty much. The idea is that you spend 'Telescopes' to draw new tiles each Turn. A Turn is a single Month in game terms, and you may only explore once per month.

shot1.png

In addition, you have the option to move your little boat, which the amount it moves depends on the windspeed, and perhaps some upgrades to your boat (sails, crew size, [Scope Control Warning]). If you move next to an island, you'll be able to make port to trade, upgrade your ship, or hire crew... and also buy more Telescope Tokens to do more explorin'

shot2.png

The game is over when every square has been explored by a single explorer. Each square uniquely explored earns Favor, the 'complete' explorer gets a bonus, and then there'll be bonuses for other TBA bonus goals (such as most crew / gold).

I've got plans for a bit of a 'colony management' element, but again, I am so dangerously going to blow scope.

You can catch me working on it the majority of the time on twitch!

Of course not! :)

With barely a day left, gonna give it all and see what comes out. Also, it's my first time soloing in a jam... Challenge accepted. Let's see what I can come up with, I'm expectant about the other games you guys bring to life in this jam, I really love the theme!

Good luck everyone! ;)

9 hours to go and finally the big payoff!

I've finally achieved my goal for this logic system I was working on.

LOGIC.gif

All the interactivity in the above gif (the toggle doors, the colour changing, the popup) is powered by this amount of logic code which i write in the editor and is saved directly into the level!

8866401e35[1].png

Although not the nicest thing to work with in terms of readability, it drastically reduces the amount of work i have to do per "world" as i can write all its custom behavioural stuff into the level and not clutter the project with scripts.

some weird stuff

i discover strange bug in game https://youtu.be/6Sn6nYIFSUE

Framerate issues on build

Watch Out For That Tree! is coming along well, at least in the Unity editor. I'm getting a steady 40-50fps there, but only about 20fps from the full build. Gameplay feels pretty poor at that framerate. Since this is the first game I've actually gotten to the build/publish step, I'm not sure what to do here. We'll figure something out!

Bots

Half-time (sort of) WIP

With about 44% time left on the Jam clock, I finally have some actual progress. The screen below is a direct not yet textured export from Sketchup in my engine. I'll be able to apply simple materials in Sketchup, modify the materials to use my fancypants PBR materials and it'll be awesome.

Did I mention that Sketchup is AMAZING to create buildings with? I never even touched the tool before this LD and I'm already creating stuff that would have taken me ages to make in any other tool, let alone in code.

The system and working ways looks quite different to the old website?

Our progress so far.

First update after 2 days. We have made some progress on our game. The engine basics are working now and we will only add features when needed from now on. Here is a sneak peek at what to expect: giphy.gif

I'm in!

My game is already done, but I never made an I'm in post so here it is lol

Abaddon

Abaddon is a paced FPS in a small arena - a place where you must fight to survive. I created a new shader in order to display an oppressive atmosphere. Four opponents with four behaviors. I did a leaderboard which allows to rivalize with other players around the world. I would like to know who will be the Abaddon Master ++

Reaching end of day 2

Energy are getting low, crazy idea use a unknow framework. But we have somthing:

Second day progress!

Our game is shaping up nicely. The world size (the circular area) is your health, and it shrinks if you idle or take damage from enemies. You can grow it by collecting health and killing enemies! :)

Wow I'm so impressed with the progress @angas-smith and I have made coming to the end of two 14hr game jamming sessions hehe~ There were quite a few bugs at the start that we had with gravity on a cylinder shaped world, but it's pretty much under control now! The art is amazing holy moly, thanks to my teammate! I've made a couple background audio tracks, which are pretty neat and being able to talk with anything is also pretty neat! Good luck to everyone doing the compo and the jam!!! :D

Planet TD update

Compo game completed: Heli Rescue!

I've finished up the game, 9 hours ahead of schedule - Rescue stranded Toy Soldiers with your RC Helicopter!

Mallows World Adventure: DONE

I'm done! And with time to spare.

MWA.png I might add more to it if I get some ideas, but for all intents and purposes it's done: https://geeitsomelaldy.itch.io/mallows-world-adventure

Along the way I've learned that if you don't guard against it, then putting things into a full inventory can cause a stack overflow, that my programmer art is getting better and is somewhat passable, and that a topographical map of Sri Lanka looks kind of like an Avocado.

Done with my game [The Lonely Captain]

36 hours after me reading the theme, my game is done.

It's a small game in which you steer a vessel based on sonar data. The game is mostly about enjoying the story and the mood though. screenshot.PNG

This game was my first ever Compo entry, before this I only did the Jam, with a team of friends. The biggest challenge to me was sound design, because I designed my game around having minimal art.

I in the end decided to go for a sound design that may not be the nicest to listen to, but that does the theme of the game really well; I use a single low bass drone note, with, on top of that, notes based on the sonar of the ship. To keep it listenable, I decided to keep all the sonar notes within a scale.

In the end I'm quite happy with the result, and actually finish with some time left.

Today's progress!

Added animations to the player and updated model

Implemented hook and rope, you can now pull blocks towards you

Unfortunately I won't be able to finish in time for the compo, hats off to those who were able to :tophat:

We got somewhere!

We woke up around 7AM today by Rasmus coughing himself to the point of death. "Holy shit" I thought to myself, If he dies I can take cred for the game. But without him I would not be able to continue so I magically made him stop coughing for now.

I heard something funny rolling on the floor, so i picked it up. It was a bottle, and inside the bottle i found a GIF. So here you go; a early version of the game Infecteria!

The game is at a stage were we could go for a nap whenever we want to and wake up a few hours before publishing.

Infecteria_halfsize.gif

very late I'm in and early nearly done

I'm in again, have been working on this entry since yesterday in the morning and am nearly done with my share of the work.

The game is extremly simple and not as fun as I would like it to be but at least I got something done even though I didn't feel creative or productive at all.

here a screenshot of what I've made so far: gameemwith/embees2.png

The idea was that a beehive is a small world of it's own, but sadly I didn't really manage to get this feeling translated into gameplay or graphics.

I lied

I said I was gonna go running and work on art.

Instead I didnt run and worked on music. YOU CANT KEEP ME AWAY FROM MUSIC! I LOVE IT TOO MUCH.

TARJECTORIES - sneak preview

My game has been complete since 6:00AM Sunday morning, but the game page isn't allowing publishing yet, so if you want a sneak preview of my Compo entry, TARJECTORIES, you'll have to head over to my website.

TARJECTORIES title screen

TARJECTORIES is practice for an artillery duel on a small planet. The planet spins, there's gravity, ballistics, you have to be lucky and use trial/error to hit. Destroy all targets to clear a level and advance. Don't accidentally hit yourself, or it's game over!

I'll be writing up a "postmortem" of my weekend later.
