It’s Dangerous to Play Alone!

Can I swing that?  Probably not.

Anyhow, I thought of a nice idea…  But as usual, I like to keep my secrets until I have something to show for it.  See ya tomorrow.  Maybe there will be a screenshot. 😉

Indeed dangerous…

That is one theme I really did not expect 😛 However I think I have an idea how to deal with it…

Ok. Let’s do this! 😀

Idea

I must admit I wasn’t too hot on this theme either (the runner up on the other hand…) but those are the rules 😀

Here’s my first idea:

At the start of the game, Old Man hands you a random item and tells you that it’s dangerous to go alone and that you should take it.

Every time you die you start as a new adventurer but old man gives you a different random item. The first item is now captured by the enemy but the progress of the first adventurer is not reverted.

When the Old Man runs out of items to give to new adventurers, it’s game over.

I can see a big problem with this being that in order to be interesting I’m going to need lots of items with different abilities and might not have enough time…

A non-linear game world would be interesting since you could decide on the best course of action based on the item you got. In addition if the world is procedurally generated you’d get a new world to explore every time Old Man runs out of items. I guess that would make the game a bit like a roguelike.

I’m going to go 2D but I don’t know if it should be top-down or a platformer or what… I guess I can decide this while doing the tile rendering code…

And so it begins

Time to invest some of my sanity into a little game. This theme’s a toughie. First hours will be spent franticly scribbling down ideas, followed by some sleep. Using Unity3D, perhaps for something 2D… Perhaps I’m thinking too much about the theme and not the gameplay. After all, this isn’t so much a theme as it is a narrative setup. With that in mind, here I go!

Just putting together a prototype to see if my first idea is any fun at all…

It’s very blocky at the moment… Sprites can come later. :) If it doesn’t work out… I have another idea! Or five.

So I’m thinking

Of making some sort of alien shooter game. You leave your home planet to go kill aliens, and he gives you a SMG. :)

Gotta aim small this time. Wish me luck

Aiming small is always my problem too!!! I’ve got far too many games from half-finishing LD challenges :)

There we go….

I’m glad current theme was chosen for the competition. Great idea already flows around and I only hope that this goal is not too big for 48 hours competition. Currently working on quickly made map editor – I’ll need it for sure!

my game idea – the mailman

You control a mailman needs to deliver letters in a city full of zombies, you start at a post office with some 2 letters to deliver, every time you find a kitten it will give you a weapon to attack the zombies, the objective is to deliver as many letters you can, and kill as many zombies you can.

will have a 3rd person view, and probably only one weapon 😀 a shotgun would be great !! lol
the streets will have cool identification names and the house will have numbers.

so remember the streets, find the kittens, kill zombies !!
I’m fine with this idea ! will go to sleep now :)
as soon I awake will start ! :)

cheers and happy letter delivering !

Darn, I have something similar to your idea except that there won’t be any zombies 😀

Grrr, I wish I would have thought of this xD

Hour One

I made a title screen o_o.

Sometimes I wonder if I spend too much time focusing on things like title screens and main menus, but I really never feel like a game is finished unless it has them. Also it’s the simplest case for the “GameMode” class that I re-create with every single project; it’s just a class that encapsulates a particular combination of visualization, simulation, and input. It’s good for switching between things like “Main Menu”, “Inventory Screen”, “Map Screen”, and “Overworld View”. Or whatever. You get the idea.

One of these days I should make a real library / framework for my flow control code and other stuff. Maybe after this LD I’ll try to extract some of the nicer bits and do just that.

Anyway, back to work!

This is clearly the best game so far.

Photoshop Is The Best Map Editor In The World

My map editor is “complete”! I just wrote something that will take a small 20×15 image, and using the color of each pixel, create what I need. Right now I can only create red and blue blocks, but oh well. It’s much faster than writing my own map editor, I can just create levels in photoshop. (I’m using an idea from a previous project, but this time implemented directly in flash rather than PHP). If anyone is curious: http://pastebin.com/EQVU0Aga Very simple, but it will do for now. :)

I thought that was Paint’s job! Refer Mini-LD whatever it was.

Dog and Kid

I’m thinking of making this kid’s life depend on this fat dog.

Objective? Never let go of this dog’s leash!

Otherwise? Ooooh… you will see!

Sounds cool!

And he’s out the gate!

Well, nothing much for now.  Just look at this guy and go, hmm, now what could he be?  Besides a penis-headed robot.

Workspace prepared. Mind empty.

Ready for Ludum Dare 20

Wasn’t particularly prepared for this theme, but c’est la vie. Fortunately, the competition starts at midday for me (Sydney, Australia), so I’ve had time to get up and about. Woke up this morning with the thought that I wanted to write something 2D in HTML/Javascript, using the canvas element. Let’s see how that works out.

Not shown in photo: refrigerator full of fruits and vegetables. It’s the healthy attack! (hmm … maybe it could be dangerous to go alone without fruits and vegetables?!)

Want to know..

It seems like most game ideas come up with so far are to do with Zombies…. I had that and started making it, then I had a better idea but I better not turn back now. Or maybe I could (change my idea that is)

If you are making a game with zombies, leave a comment below…

it’s a good year for zombies

This gonna be crazy. Must. Not. Sleep.

All right, I finally decided : my game will take place on random worlds, with random enemies, random plants, and you will be dropped in the place with some random weapon with a single purpose : pick as many “gold coins” (whatever it will be at the end) as possible before leaving with your spaceship.

Of course it’s still vague, but the concept will evolve during the weekend…

Sooooo many things to code…

Ladies And Gentlebong

Hangedman: We have a nice evening. Thanks for coming out. I’m sure it’s going to be lots of fun and most of you are going to be very disoriented towards the end. We can only hope.

<Laughter offscreen>

Hangedman:I’m here to ramble a bit about my game to get my thoughts in line, while I still have two thoughts to rub together.

<Laughter offscreen>

Hangedman: My idea was originally for Non-Euclidean Geometry, but works excellently for this theme.

Hangedman: It involves a kid, the dark, and a hell of a lot of opening and closing a door. You’ll see. At least, I hope you will.

<Laughter offscreen>

Hangedman: Best of luck to everyone, and I’m going to leave you with a bit of music. Yes, it’s Grammatik, with the sublime, “Stairway To Hip-Hop Heaven“. Hope you like it.

<Laughter, applause, fade to music>

LD20 – Hour One

Well, it’s a start 😛

I’m malcolmt’s exact opposite

Mind prepared, workspace–none!

Oh well, I do more with less. Though I could use those fruits and vegetables.

Game on, fellow warriors!

Further thoughts

At this point, I’m rather inclined to make a sidescrolling brawler sort of game. Engine should be fairly simple, so I don’t get bogged down in physics stuff, and I can focus on getting the core gameplay elements into a satisfying state. The ‘take this’ part of the equation can be acquirable weapons of various practicality.

Look, a photo!

So uhh this is what I’ve got so far. It handles the keyboard though I can’t seem to get a “non-blocking” handler yet.

This is just the editor. There isn’t any game yet.
