Game Idea

So here’s my game idea,

Title: Forever Alone

Style: Platformer

You are the piano instructor for a princess in a fantasy setting. You have a secret crush on her but this is absolutely forbidden, one night after your scheduled lesson you are caught looking her directly in the eyes for longer then 2 seconds by the Royal Guard! You are immediately banished to the dungeon to face execution. The next morning it turns out the princess is kidnapped by an evil Necromancer who is looking to make her his undead bride. You are taken from the dungeon by the King’s personal guard and you have just been officially been drafted into the military on a mission to go rescue the princess. But of course the guard will send you in alone first to face the Necromancer, don’t worry though, they will give you the necessary tools to survive!

This will be made with FlashPunk and FlashDevelop, I plan for it to be a silly adventure game with laughs and puzzle gameplay.

Oh I see.. laughs and giggles..laugh it up funny boy. this idea will never work, it’s been played out so many times and even mario and wario couldn’t give this a legit shot at succeeding.

Monkeys, Robots, and Zombies

I have a core mechanic and a bit of story in mind: that involves Monkeys, Robots, Zombies, and the LD20 theme.  I was originally going to use GameMaker, but took the fact that it’s not installed on this machine as a sign I should use XNA instead.  So I’ve started putting together some basic engine functionality.  I’ll start implementing and testing the mechanic idea in the morning.

Everything is going better than expected.

This is my game. Needs actual graphics, actual dialog, and actual sounds. Programming is about done though! That’s all I’m doing for tonight.

It seems like a lot of people have already designed their game engines and everything that has to do with the game, and are going to try to sneak the theme in somehow so that their game qualifies for this competition.

I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure that’s taking this a little bit too seriously. I’ve been given a theme, I’m making a game based around it. From scratch. With shitty code hacked together at midnight.

Agreed. Forcefully stuffing the theme into existing engine is a mistake imho, but these projects won’t get much attention anyway. Letting the code flow naturally with the theme is a way to go, even if it looks like shit in the end.

AWESOME

like many others, i was also surprised to see the theme^^. i just woke up, and gotta say: this – is – friggin – awesome :D. a fun game theme!

let’s see what we can do!

I know exactly what you are thinking dude.. and all i have to say is — don’t even think about doing it. no one is going to vote for that. they ain’t looking for that.. do yourself a favor, and sleep in long enough tomorrow that you forget this even sounded like a good idea.

I Have Consumed Food and a Reconsideration

Quick food photo, nothing fancy. A few adorable left over Easter eggs, some Kielbasa and assorted things.

Poor adorable eggs. You're going to a better place.

And the result:

I guess technically, not the final result.

Totally set food wise, good into the early morning. Was busting my butt trying to get a trailer done (check it out it’s spiffy), and game up for XNA peer review for the past 24 hours. Starting to wish I would have gotten at least a little pre-compo sleep. Hopefully the over abundance of food keeps me going.

After playing a bit of Dad N’ Me and thinking about other similar Behemoth games, I just can’t bring myself to fire up Flashpunk. Looks like I’ll be going the normal Flash route for this compo. It’s such a shame too, because I’d love to come up with a simpler concept just to get some Flashpunk experience, but I’m drawing a blank for this theme.

If this is what you are eating, you have no chance. if you are doing a game about danger and “take this”, you don’t want easter eggs and smiley faces on your mind. You need to be outside finding some danger to inspire you. you have 48 hours.. take 5 or 6 to get in the right state of mind!

I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t use FlashPunk to make a Behemoth-style game, but by all means, use what you know. :)

3 hours later: Lava, Little kids and Invisible friends

Well, I’ve got the basic idea for my game down. It does involve the theme along with Lava, Little kids and Invisible friends. I have an edited tool list!

Flash Devlop and Flashpunk
Omgo Editor to make levels (Still getting to know it, but the tutorials are making it easy :) )
Photoshop CS4, might go to vector tomorrow after I clear my head.
Sfxr

Hopefully I’ll have time to put in the story, we shall see.

I really think you are making a mistake here with the lava concept. Lava is dangerous, but it just can’t emote danger like an momma orangutang who’s baby has been nabbed by you. If that big momma is after you, i’m sure you are jumping in the lava pit to die instantly as opposed to having your arm twisted off and getting beaten with it relentlessly.yeah.. ditch the lava. start fresh.

Nitro Racer game idea

My game will be called “Nitro Racer”. This will be a post-apocalyptic racer with a twist. Not only do you have to win each race to progress, but you will also need to keep close to your opponents during the race, or you’ll die. “Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer”.

Here’s a teaser story-card:

Story card for post-apocalyptic racer

As you can see from this image, I’m not an artist. I will try to aim for a comic graphics style. Now on to make some tiles for the tracks..

No no, take this!

Not my favorite theme (so many good choices, but yet again everyone picked a safe generic one :|) but I think I settled on an idea after throwing away about 3 more ambitious ones.

The main character arrives unarmed at a cemetery for some undecided reason, and encounters a hobo that hands him a shotgun while delivering the line.  He enters the cemetery and sure enough, the dead are rising.  You shoot zombies for a bit from a top down arena shooter perspective then all of a sudden the hobo comes back and says something like “no wait, I promised that one to my buddy” and takes the shotgun away and gives you some other weapon.

Long story short, you’ll fight zombies and every 20-30 seconds the hobo will come back and give you some other weapon to kill zombies with.  My plan is to make it interesting by coming up with wacky things to use as weapons.  I’d like to add another layer of gameplay by varying the types of zombies and making them weak to certain classes of weapons but not others.

I might change it from zombies to something else since they’re overdone but naturally its the first aesthetic that came to mind.   Now off to work!

Dude, i’ve seen like 15 games in the contest so far with this same concept.. You think you are gonna win on account of a hobo, some random zed and a bunch of really cool weapons ??

Oh i see.. you are acting like it’s not cuthroat..yet as soon as someone takes a break, you are still tapping away at code. You don’t fool me. you want this. but… it’s not going to be easy christopher.

Game idea and stuffs

Figured it was about time for me to post info on my game idea.  I’m taking a sideways route around the theme, but I think it still fits quite nicely.

Title : As yet undecided, I’m sure I’ll come up with something witty later though.  Current working title is ‘Small Hands’

Concept : You are a thief, and you need the gold.  However you don’t want to get pinched by the fuzz.  So you start buying orphans from the local orphanage, and training them to be your little thieving monkeys.  You send out the orphans in groups to steal as much as possible as they can and come back to you safe ( without being arrested ).

An orphan sent out by himself is likely to be caught by the police, thus diminishing your income.  The idea is to plan accordingly so that you send out enough orphans that they can collect appropriate amounts of money, and then make it back safely.

So, the theme? Dangerous for the orphans to go alone.  And they take your stuff.  Clever little orphans.

Will I get it finished? Hopefully!

Prototyping and Generating Ideas

I decided to go with the adventure/rpg route and I’m currently looking at tiled map generation. The player would start in a town and perhaps buy/sell items and then explore the world (see screenshot) where treasure and enemies await.

I’m thinking that if a battle occurs, it can be resolved RPG style by cutting to a battle scene and choosing to use options or items.

It’s also 5am and I’ve been awake for 22 hours. I might go watch the sun rise and put on some coffee :)

Psyching the competition out

This is my first ludum dare competition, so I’m not really sure what to expect. But I’ve watched enough reality TV show competitions to know that you need to be ruthless. Make them think your thinking one thing, and then be thinking exactly the opposite so you are always one step ahead.

Tell them they need a rebecca black soundtrack  or their clouds really need some work. They can’t stop singing friday and obsessing about clouds and you are off in the clear making a kick ass game. It’s a competition, and you gotta be in it to win it.

That’s why i’m in the bunker. Someone tells me to start fixing clouds and shit.. and I’m flipping them the bird and just writing better AI code while sipping a beer. Can’t rattle me.. this place is reinforced like a mother trucker.

Rattle the competition... make them doubt themselves!

LD20 – Progress

(Programmer art FTW :D)

Making progress, the player now doesn’t fall through the ground, and effects such as rain are working properly!

you are gonna need alot more than rain to win this comp. Rain ain’t gonna win it, thats for sure. Noah himself ain’t gonna be able to save you with his big ole boat if you wanna work on effects all day. What’s next.. snow ??? hail ?? maybe you can have double rainbows and that youtube guy can do a cameo.

Condom Sniper Blitz

TOOLS: Unity, some random utility scripts I use

DEPLOYMENT: Web

GENRE: Bromantic Match3 First Person Sniper

IDEA: What’s more dangerous than unprotected sex? Yowza! As WingBro, the guardian angel of bros everywhere, you have to analyze how big your buddy’s unit is and then launch an appropriately sized condom through the open window and into his hand.

Concoct bizarre chain reactions where guys in adjacent hotel rooms with similarly sized peckers are climaxing to earn mega points.

I’ll pair it with Ode to Joy for Peggle-like ecstasy.

This has to be the best idea anyone has had for this theme.

Off to a bad start

Appearently I’ve forgotten all I know about programming in Flash, I’m getting stressed by Chronolapse and all you other guys stuffs looks amazing already! I hate you all for being so awesome!

My idea so far is basically about a guy living in a hourglass that is entrusted with a sack of sand. With this bag of sand he will be able to fill holes and build hills. That’s all I got for now, trying to get some platformingish game with worms/lemmings-type enviroment to work.

Progress (?)

So here’s what I have so far. Not much to look at yet. I’m planning that it’ll a) look like an actual foresty landscape, and you’ll be able to walk around it. Then the ghosts will come after you. Luckily, because it was dangerous to go alone, you came prepared…

ghosts ? this isnt’ going to work. you really need to rethink this. Ghosts means alpha.. you are going to be needing to be using up some serious processor speed and you ain’t gonna be able to do no serious optimizing in 48 hours.

Folding for tonight

So far I have a story and some music. Too bad some of the music loops badly thanks to one misplaced note. But oh well, that will do.

As for gameplay? Still none. Might work on it tomorrow but I’m getting a new computer so I might be playing magicka all day :X

Catchup post

Lot’s of work ahead, so i’m keeping it short and bundled ;)

That’s my awesome tri-screen workplace setup:

That was my breakfast:

And that’s my progress:

Game is called Hoarding Inc. I’ll explain more details when they are done.

Play it here: http://www.sos.gd/ld20

Getting started

I’m getting a bit of a late start, but I figure I can get a couple of hours work in, and still get up reasonably early tomorrow.

I’m at a bit of a loss for what to do with this theme.  But I’ve wanted to make a Zelda-esque adventure game for a while, so I’ll start working on the engine for that.  The idea will evolve over time.  My first instinct is to build my own engine, but ld48 experience tells me I need to simplify as much as I possibly can.  So I’m going to go with Flixel.  I haven’t worked with Flixel much in the past though, so I’ll have to start by reacquainting myself with it, and getting something simple up and running.

cmon.. flixel ?? you have to be kidding me. I heard that the machine language thing is going down big time this year. if you ain’t all 1’s and 0’s, it’s all over for you. you got a 6…done.. hardcore.

First screenshot

Woooooooo! My boilerplate haskell code came in handy, although I had to fight with the input code for a bit, and I still only have a black window that prints input events to the console.

Getting started on LD 20

I’m in guys!

I didn’t have time to announce, but I’ve settled on the tools, settled on an idea, and got a skeleton coded up. For this LD I’m using pygame. The idea is a metroidvania type sidescroller, but probably not too heavy on exploration. Haven’t decided what theme I’m going to butcher with my programmer art. At the moment I’m more worried about getting some of the groundwork done and I’m planning on working out the ideas later.

Anyways I am so stoked for this LD, the theme is great! Good luck everyone!
