LD 40 December 1–4, 2017

Second Attempt

It's been a while since I've made a game. I'm excited to create something again.

I'm in using an uncommon jam engine: Roblox

I'll be developing a game in Roblox. I already have experience with it, so it will be kind of cool.

If you don't know what it is about, it is a gaming platform with user generated games, which currently has more users than Minecraft and some individual game developers grossing US$ 2+ million dollars/year (most Roblox games have tons of microtransactions and are pay to win using a virtual currency called Robux). You use its own IDE (Roblox Studio) and script in Lua.

Games made in Roblox run in all operating systems in the Desktop, all mobile platforms and also in Xbox. Also it is completely VR ready.

I'am in ... with Unity

My second attempt : my objective is simply to finish and publish a game, really ;-)

We are in

My lovely girlfriend @kyasarinn and I decided to participate in LD40. To be honest I'm pretty hyped :D I love the positive vibe of the event. Good luck everyone!

Software Stack - Linux :penguin: - Godot Engine 3.0 beta (YOLO) - Pyxel Edit / Aseprite / Gravit Designer - Visual Studio Code - Git (of course) - music... no idea.... - rfxgen or something like that - screen recording... I'll probably write shell script to take screen shot every minute or something :D

I'm in!

This is my first time doing a game jam of any sort, and after finally finishing my first couple games, I think I might be ready?

I'll be using a fantasy console called TIC-80, hopefully I can actually finish something!

Good luck everyone!

I'm in with Unity and my Voxel Utilities

I hope to have enough spare time ... will be tough. But I really want to finally attempt again :)

I've published some Voxel Utilities I've been developing in my sparetime on github

it can output things like this:: Dec-01-2017 00-48-40.gif

or this: Character.gif

let me know if you're interested in using it yourself

I am in! Wait, 7th time? Already?

The time really flies!

I recently got myself into boardgaming, so it will probably show in my game as well. I realized just how great and fun deckbuilding and worker placement systems are. I may try and do something involving one of these two, or both. I must keep myself from over complicating it, and backing out from my initial ideas early enough. Or, I also may do some social experimentish thingy. People seem to like that. Or a bullet hell. That could be fun.

I am quite excited for this LD, as I will finally once again have all the time during the weekend.

I will use my classic and proven tools. I only will finally stop using GIMP and move on to some... good... tools. I will give Kyra a try.

Anyway, have fun everyone who reads this, and don't forget, the goal is not to get as many top 100s (or top 10s) as possible, but to have fun, learn something new and make something YOU will be proud of.

I have a thing or two to do in my preparation day. I have to clean my room, clean the kitchen, cook for the whole weekend, get all my tools up and running, clean up the desktop (in both meanings), and get some schoolwork done (hopefully). I will make something good finally this time. Something... elegant.

You know, in games, there is a concept I don't exactly know how to call. The thing is, sometimes you have mechanics that have huge implications, and there is something "behind" them. I don't know exactly how to explain myself. If you look at Go for example, it has very few simple rules, but there has been whole industry for thousands of years studying and mastering this game. On the other hand, you have some atmospheric games like Eldritch Horror. There are many rules, a lot of text, many things to do in a turn. That is all fine, but... there is not much "behind" those mechanics. Once you grasp how the mechanics work and stuff, you "get" the game and there is not much more to explore.

And in my opinion, it is better when there is something "behind" the mechanics. This concept can be difficult to grasp in connection to videogames, but the basic idea is: if you can think of clever mechanics that are not autotelic, you will have less work to do, and with less coding and developing, you can create more gameplay.

Hope the last paragraphs made sense to somebody at least.

Anyway,

See you on the other side.

First Time Ludum Dare

First time entry, I worry I may not have the full skillset but this looks fun anyways.

Tools I will be using:

Engine - Unity2017

Art - Pyxel Edit - Photoshop

Audio - Bosca Ceoil - Audacity - SFXR

Good luck everyone, I look forward to seeing the results and play testing.

First Ludum Dare!

Very excited to be participating in my first game jam ever!! All the best to all fellow gamedev folks.

Such Join

Much fun

Another Stab At This

Looks like I'm jumping in for the 40th LD! Good luck to everyone joining in too!

Good luck all!

Good luck with your games! Breathe in caffeine, breathe out video game.

In all seriousness, stay focused, and have a good time!

incoming

i haven't been able to finish a game jam in over a year now. so let's make the game

  • [aseprite] -- yeah
  • [sunvox] -- easily the best non-DAW music production tool out there.
  • [unity] probably but honestly i hate unity. so maybe something homegrown with [love], [moonscript] and [tiled]
  • provided unity is used, [cinemachine] has a fairly cool camera system that can make impressive results even in 2d
  • i've been exploring some [rust] gamedev stuff, but i think the iteration cycle is still a bit unwieldy for something like a jam. not anywhere near as bad as C++, but still an issue. libraries include [ggez], [gfx], [cpal], [amethyst] and [specs]

some arbitrary thoughts

it's custom to announce yourself as being "in" and say all the tools you want to use, but i worry of the expectations it may impose on a new participant. so, here's imo better idea: here are my goals for this jam

  • scope correctly and finish the game -- this is a given, but it's one of the hardest things to accomplish and one of the major reasons why game jams are a good exercise.
  • avoid bikeshedding and overfocus on technology -- i have made a habit of spending weeks in technical preparation for a jam only to worry about technical minutiae to the point of forgetting to do any game design. the effect of this is reproducing tropey designs that are neither interesting nor fun explorations of the theme or in game design at all, but the game itself is technically interesting given the time constraints. it's easier to fall into this trap if you're a programmer by trade, i think.
  • stretch often -- i don't need another shoulder injury just because i wanted to make a video game

Good luck!

and have fun, don't forget to sleep early

Getting ready. Producer / Programmer looking for visual artist !

This is my second Ludum Dare, and I am happy to be here.

I am a University Professor of Video Game Production and Design, looking now to become a game developer.

If you are an artist and want to join forces with me, please let me know!

Let's make this happen.

Happy game deving!

We have no idea what we're getting into.

Our first time doing a game Jam. Although we've made games with a time crunch in the past this will be a new adventure.

The Team:

Graphics: OLO Jonathan

Game Developer: Deveshin(Me!)

We're excited to be challenged in new ways and ready to have fun!

Once More Unto The Breach

Bit off more than I could chew last time. Hopefully won't do that again.

Will be using my standard tools: - Xturos, a small 2D engine I've been working on over the years. Written in C. - Paint.net for image manipulation. - Spine for more complicated animations if needed. - bfxr and Audacity for sounds. - autotracker.py for music.

And as a little extra bonus I made a small game while testing a new programming method. If you have a little bit of time to kill it's available here. There's a text file explaining the controls.

I'm in! My first Ludum Dare

Hi! This will be my first Ludum Dare and I'm not sure what to expect. I'm not even sure if I signed for it correctly. If I'm writing this does it mean I signed up, right?

Anyways, this is what I plan to use:

  • RPG Maker MV (I wont be doing an RPG, I'll just use it to program a platformer or top-down something in JavaScript).
  • Photoshop for art and maybe GIMP for pixel sprites.
  • A very old Bamboo Connect to draw something.
  • SFXR, I heard about this a couple days ago and it seems great.
  • Audacity, to edit and convert audio.
  • Maybe I'll record my screen with OBS Studio.

I read someone suggested that we should post our goals. But I really don't know what to expect, this is my second jam and maybe I'll be releasing my second game ever. I'm pretty new at this.

lepatryckduffy in !

Yesss third ludum dare for me ! For this event, the 40 th edition and for more creative constraints, i will use pico 8.

Enjoy and make games ;) !
