Power Hoods

Olá!

There are the design of the hoods that will give special powers to the character in Sugar Addiction. The style changed to modern hood type. Any suggestions for more hoods?

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Thank you so much to everyone who has given my game votes this morning, I finally hit 20! And to all those who said I needed a screenshot on the game page I put one there, and might as well throw it here as well. :)

Made an online game so left rating late so peeps played together. Not hit 20 yet

Hey guys,

I made an online game, as the title showed. This is my 5th year straight running, but the only one where I've been in danger of not hitting the results. Any chance I can get pity ratings? I rated 100 games, there's just not many people still rating lol.

rude bear online.png

It's an online coop/versus game where the more people exist, the more complicated the game gets, and people can spy and betray each other.

<3

Demon Hunt has made it, thank you

Wanted to send out a massive thank you to everyone who took the time to play and rate Demon Hunt DemonHuntSG_01.png

The game has received 20+ votes in all the categories it's entering and I'm really excited and looking forward to results time. Check it out if you haven't yet played it.

The game is rough round the edges but I think it has potential and am currently doing some experiments with instancing to enable massive hordes which I think will be very fun.

Congratulations to all that have also made it and good luck to those who still need ratings hope you reach your target.

Good Luck to everyone!!

I played many games and most of them are incredible. Every Ludum has better games than the previous one. I can't wait for the next.

PD. feel free to test our game and rate us if you please https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/flirt-themall

Inversiosynthesis - Need a few more votes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cw8an6QAYw8

I need a few more votes for my game. It takes about 5 minutes to play. I'm a bit behind this event due to family vacation / illness, so thanks to everyone who has a moment to check it out.

I MADE IT!!!

I made it to 20 ratings on EVERY category!!! This happened like 3 days ago. Yeah, I don't think that I ever made a post thanking everyone... but, it was Christmas!!! I have an excuse! Anyway though; thanks for getting DvZ to 22 ratings!!! I made it, finally. It was a long, and bumpy road. Thank you to all who rated my game. It felt sooooo good to make it 20 ratings! I hope that you have a good day.

That last thing about having a good day, was just to anyone reading this. Soooo yeah.

I also have 2 YT channels! I mean... they're not as good as I want them to be in the future... but, I have them none the less.

One last call for votes

We knew the dangers of making a non-video game going in, but we're still hoping some of you have a deck of cards and an extra person or five handy, because we've made a card game and we need votes!

If you're still in danger and actively seeking votes too, let me know. Chances are I've hit you already (I've been mostly hitting people who've been looking for votes) but if not, I'll rate you.

To be frankly, I prefer HTML5 (web) games, I am lazy to download files. :P

Like ours - The Hunger Maims

HTML5 (web)

Wonder if Ludum Dare can have search functions provided like what version of games released? I would have rated more!

You are very welcome to post(in comment) HTML5(Web) games links here, I will try to play before closing time! (Also feel free to play our game ^^ )

Growing Polytheism - Update 1.1

Hi everyone !

I just released a 1.1 build for my little management game, with zoom support, buildings costs feedback, and some rendering optimizations \o/

If you have five minutes to spare please have a look ;)
The game managed to get 20+ ratings in all categories except Mood, and since it's mostly a moody game, it's a bit sad.

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/growing-polytheism

See you all in a few hours for the results o/

Thanks for feedback

Much thanks for your constructive feedback. This was our first LD and it was a realy good experience for us. Certainly we will take part on the next LD. We are still working on a final Android version.

Hey, this is not my game, but I really love it, and I fell that it deserves to be ranked !

Oil Tycoon: plan to the future

Hey everyone !

I was happy to participate to the last Ludumdare. It was hard to concentrate on gamedev (I wasn't able to work the sunday, so I worked saturday and monday and posted as Jam), but I'm very enthusiast as I tested Vue.js technology, and, for developing management game, it's a very cool discover !

I started to continue working on my game concept (Oil Tycoon) and create a new game based on it. Here is a WIP screenshot :

Capture d'écran de 2017-12-28 21-45-07.png

See you at next Ludumdare event !

Sudden Realization

I stare at the clock... Capture.png

Why is it only now I decided to rate games again? I can't go through all 50 though my list in 2 hours! :disappointed_relieved:

I shouldn't have taken the time off for the last 5 days of the year...

Other than that, I actually managed to complete that self-imposed 100 artwork challenge in a matter of two weeks! All before the 24th. However, I can't really draw for about a week after. My hand hurts. Don't worry, it is still recovering!

Ludum Dare 41 - April 20th-23rd weekend

Our 16th year kicks off on April 20th-23rd with Ludum Dare 41.

That weekend avoids EGX Rezzed, the Revision demoparty, PAX East, and "Tax Day" in the US. Hopefully I didn't miss anything big. My apologies to the guy with the camping trip and the person with a birthday that weekend.

Game Developers Conference 2018?

I'm not sure!

I currently don't have a flight/hotel/anything booked for the Game Developers Conference. *cough* I'm actually looking for work in the new year, ideally something LD/GDC friendly, but I don't yet know if that will be the case. January is my month to pull together a portfolio/resume, and wrap up a bunch of LD and non-LD stuff I had to push until later for LD40's sake (finish closing my games biz, etc).

So hey, FYI: It's not the end of Ludum Dare when you see me talking about job hunting on Twitter, okay?

You're welcome to reach out (/contact), but I wont be ready with anything formal until month's end.

Back to the original point: at the moment I'm not going to GDC, but that could change.

Wrap up

I hope you had a great time taking part in Ludum Dare.

Before I go, I need to give a big shoutout to @local-minimum, @sgstair, @zwrawr, and @noojuno for their help on the site these past few months. Much appreciated! If you want to help us make the website better, you can start here.

That's it for me. We'll see you in the new year!

Ranked 302nd and proud

Not going to lie for my first game jam ever, I'm happy with that result.

GG everybody!

We kinda did super well! (but not really?)

So somehow I brainwashed myself into thinking the rating period was ending on 31st. So today I wake up, and I think to myself, I'm gonna slowly go and start gathering ratings a few days in advance... Only to find out I have like 2 hours left and 10 ratings to go. So I made myself some breakfast, a nice warm tea, turned up the heater, got myself all cozy. And proceeded to panic.

As a result of the ensuing playing/rating spree I did manage to bump our game to the top of the queue, but ratings came too slow and I only managed to gather 16/17 ratings for us. We did get results nonetheless though. And I have very mixed feelings about these.

LD40results.png

On the one hand some of these are really great - I mean holy crap, we got 666 in theme, that's pretty damn metal. On the other hand, I can't shake the feeling this is all undeserved. We didn't get enough ratings. There are folks out there who got into the top 100 with 50-80 ratings, meaning their results are more objective. As far as anyone is concerned, we could have just hired 17 hitmen to assassinate LD-goers and rate us from their accounts.

But still, kudos to those hitmen. They might be merciless killing machines, but they did have the heart to give us those ratings despite there being only a very small monetary bonus for doing so. So thanks to all.

Too Many Cooks! Results

Results.png Results for "Too Many Cooks!" LDJAM #40

Results.png Results for "Delivery To The Underpass" LDJAM #39

As you can see I've made improvements in everything but mood (entered for humour instead (and got higher so I count that as an improvement)) and audio. Didn't have as many audio effects for this jam and the music was a bit rushed so I totally agree. These are great results though, I'm stoked!

Screenshot3.png Check out Too Many Cooks! here.

LD40 is over!

:open_mouth: More than 20 ratings? For my first LD game, I considered it to be quite incomplete because of lack of time, so I definitely didn't expect it to receive so much attention. Thanks to everyone who rated my game so it could get a score! Now the jam is over, I can start to work seriously to make it more polished.

Congrats to all the participants! It was so much fun to make a game and then discover what others had made. Happy New Year and see you at the next Ludum Dare

70th overall... wow.

I have to say, I didn't expect to score this high up. I'm not complaining though :D ratings.PNG

As expected, Humor and Audio are my worst categories by far, but I hardly did anything for them anyway, so that's totally understandable ^^ Again, big thanks to everyone who voted, congrats to all participants and see you next time!

Quick question

Something that's been floating around in my mind -- are ratings overall out of all rated entries, or in our specific section (Compo/Jam)? I don't think I really thought about it during LD38, but now I'm curious.

What in the darn heck?

II placed relatively "alright," but am still very upset with my results. Why? Because my results are lower than my last two games' results, which were practically trash. I'm not saying this one is a gem or something, but it's just better. Think about the fact that somehow my first game that had NO MUSIC has a higher rating in audio than this game that had music. That just doesn't make sense. I also spent a considerable amount more time designing graphics for this Ludum Dare than I did for the first 2, and got lower score in graphics, which is appalling.

I suppose when you barely reach the minimum needed votes you get more bias from either easy-rating people or hard-rating people.

lol i'm as surprised as anyone

lol.png

i legit hated the theme and thought my idea was no good... I can't believe it, I'm super excited about these results!! thanks all, this ludum dare was so much fun <3

Awesome result + Post jam version

I have just one thing to say about the result:

WOW! Thank you so much for the support guys. You're the best!

But don't go anywhere, while you were waiting for the result, I took some time to make a more complete and polished version of the game. I hope you will like it.

Overall 640 | Part 2

Some mins ago i write this post: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/greedy-robot-fight/greedy-robot-fight-overall-640th

And now i am thinking about the issues i had with this project, some people don't understood the theme applied in the game, more turns you have more turns the bot has too, and probably i should make more stuff with that idea, different attacks more playable chars etc, another problem i think was the difficulty, in some of the maps you have a 100% win chance, and ya you can always play it in a way that you can lose but that get down some of the fun you can get

The audio its my better voted category, its strange but cool, i will learn more about music to the next ld!

BTW i am very surprised about getting ~23 ratings in the first 3-4 days, one guy said me that i have to vote other games to push mine and that works well, but its important make a good game too, i saw ton of winners with 20 votes and less, nice!

Cardhoard: Looking back, looking forward.

Wow! So... Cardhoard did way better than I anticipated.

results.PNG

I'm honestly stunned, and very happy enjoyed you all enjoyed the game so much. For those that played and commented during the rating period, thank you so much for all the feedback.

While I have you here, I actually have a little announcement to make: I've already begun on work on a new-and-improved edition of the game, which will release as a standalone game for computers, and hopefully phones! It will have the same pick-up-and-play gameplay as the original, but with some tune-ups and new features, like better (and rebindable!) control, tighter movement, a more graceful difficulty curve, and a little warehouse to explore when you aren't busy stomping boxes. If you are interested in following development, feel free to follow me on Twitter!

coffee2.gif

From #17 to #405

Heck. What happened? I mean, that's what I get for doing 15 hours for a baseline. I'm not mad or anything. I'm not expecting to be at the top 25 either. So that's fine!

Capture.png

Next time, I hope I have the time to make a full 48 hours next Ludum Dare! I swear it!

Other than that, header.png

:star: will continue in progress.

Yes, I see the potential of this and I will be working on a full version of it! Thank you all for the wonderful feedback and I hope to update you guys soon in a form of videos!

I'll be announcing it here soon, or my Twitter soon enough! So stay tuned! (I might actually do a kickstart on this soon as well. I want to have the passion of continuing this through the end!)

So here's the pitch:

Dad left a treasure hunt for me to explore. Even with all of that effort, will it be worth it, or will be too much?

Take it as it is but in terms of my series world, it can be taken to a whole new context! Well, I am trying. Here's how it looks right now tho. All made from scratch.

That's it for me. See you next Ludum Dare or on the first update video of project Revolve!

Feel satisfied with my first LD result

Life's A Glitch Results - 81st in Audio

Capture.PNG

Fairly good scores I think. It'll be interesting to see how many games got rankings for each category, I think this jam broke the record for the number of games entered.

I'm definitely surprised to get in the Top 100 for Audio this year, it's generally my worse ranking category from all my past submissions.

Title GIF

Either way, thanks to everyone who played and rated Life's a Glitch! Have a happy new year!

Quadrilateral Damage came 2nd place in the fun category! :D

quad02-bnabr5db.png

LD40 has been a great experience for me. It's the second LD I've participated in, but my first compo entry as well, and to be placed in the top 100 in two categories (41st overall and 2nd in fun) is really exciting!

Thank you so much to everyone who played, rated and left feedback on my game! Also, another big thanks to everyone who streamed my game! It was the first time I've ever been able to watch someone who I've never met play a game of mine, and it was a very exciting and entertaining experience!

Congrats to everyone who finished a game for the jam or the compo. It's not an easy feat to accomplish, so seeing so many people working on their own projects in such a short time frame makes me feel good inside :3

One more thing, for anyone who played my game and may be interested in an improved version, check out this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DsWuNqmdFI

"Super Quadrilateral Damage" as I call it is coming along really well, and since the LD version, I've added an additional character to play as, more enemies and bosses, an improved menu system and more features. Other features have yet to be implemented too, so stay tuned.

See you all at Ludum Dare 41 :D

Runaway Magic - Top 1000 WOOOO

ludumdare40results.png

To be honest, I'm not really that upset with my placement, given the feedback, and I'm actually kinda surprised! This was my first LD, and first time building a game in a time crunch - since college - so honestly? I'm feeling really good, despite placing 912 overall. Besides, I broke the 300s in humor, so that counts for something! :D

Thank you to everyone who rated and left me feedback. It honestly really made my day and feel like I'm actually halfway decent at this game development thing. This is certainly not my last LD, and I am looking forward to LD41 with excitement.

If anyone would like to follow me on Twitter, my handle is @ scowlingamercat

ON TO THE NEXT ONE!

Not bad for the first LD!

Hey, results are online and I would like to thank you all for your ratings. It was my first Ludum Dare and it was awesome!

Since I never participated in LD I didn't know what to expect. Before the event I wanted to be in the first half. After I submitted my game I was quite satisfied with what I've done during the weekend (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/im-not-here). Feedback was positive and I was even thinking of the first 100 (at least in one category). And my game actually made it! 67th in the Fun category, cool! Playing games should be fun, right? So it’s one of the most important categories, right? :D And 148th overall out of 1040 in Compo is not bad at all either.

screenshot.png

It's a shame I didn't play the most games in the first 100 (I've rated 78 games).. but I will catch it :)

Thanks and see you in LD41!

Results are in! 101st on Humor, not too bad! 250th total

Getting high in humor was my goal. Not as high as i was hoping, but it might have been more brutal than funny. Thanks for all the votes! For my first ever Jam, i am happy with the results :D

Capture.PNG

A little disappointed...

Results are in! And unsurprisingly there is still plenty to improve.

Screenshotem2017-12-29/em00-48-27.png

I was really hoping that for once I would be able to break into the overall top 100. And I was just a hair off of it. Oh well, I guess what I did wasn't good enough. These are still the best results I ever got for a game, so I'm still quite happy with it. I just hoped for the cream on top of the cake, but no dice.

What really surprises me about some of the results I see are that people get in the top 25 on their first ludum dare! Holy shit! What kind of voodoo is this? I have been partecipating in almost every ludum dare since the 26th. So this is my 15th ludum dare. And I still don't have even a distant glimpse of the top of the scoreboard! Fuck, I guess I plain suck.

Oh well. Life's a game, after all. You have to suck to get better.

If you didn't get a chance and still want to try my game out, feel free to do so! It would make me so happy you don't have an idea. Seriously. You can check it out here: HEADSTUCK

You can also follow me on Twitter if you are interested updates on future projects. I mostly work on story based games, so see if that tickles your fancy. I'm always happy to know more people.

I want to thank the organizers and everyone that commented on my game, the feedback has been amazing! Thank you so much everyone!

Results are in for Sugarplum Summit!

Wow what a ride it has been. My team and I want to thank everyone who rated our game. While the results are lower than we thought they would be, it's still pretty good for our first time doing Ludum Dare!

My First LD results, not happy at all =/

I didn't know what to expect since the beginning, but top 200 of 10000 is kinda depressing, lol.

Anyways, I still need a lot of practice, this was my second try at making a game (first doing it alone), and I learned a lot, but I still have even more to learn to make decent games.

Oh, and thanks to everyone who played my game and rated it. That was by far the most exiting part of it, for me.

Thanks to everyone that rated us! 7th in humor was TOTALLY not what we expected. I'm so pumped. Especially because I forgot to add the humor section for two days or so after we put it up!!!

Permanence got 1st overall!

Capture.PNG

Thank you to everyone who played and rated Permanence!

This was my 8th Ludum Dare, and when I started back in 33, I never imagined that I would make it this far. My only goal was to eventually get in the top 100. When my previous game, HackOS, got 4th, I honestly thought that was the best I'd ever do. Now this really is probably the best I'll ever do, but I look forward to making more games in the future and seeing all the brilliant games made by the community. I want to thank everyone for making this event fun, and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again in Ludum Dare 41.

Progress! & Mini-Post Mortem

I only had about 12 hours to put into LD40. I made my focus something I could do quickly and tried to focus on finding that 'fun factor.' I seem to have found it (at least compared to my prior games).

  • overall -> slowly going up, LD39 took a dip because I didn't get very good graphics going
  • Fun -> up, up, up!!!!
  • Innovation -> -shrug- not sure what makes thing innovative
  • Theme -> I guess I have got better at giving the feeling of the theme..
  • graphics -> oddly my 3D modeling skills must be better then my 2D drawing skills... that or 3D just gets better votes in this category. The dip on LD39 was me not having time to do actually graphics and submitted with place holder graphics
  • audio -> I think the 'your overheating' sound hurt me bad on LD40 (feedback said it was anoying).

Looking forward to to next LD!

Drawing did not pass in vain

In general, I am very happy. Every year, everything is better and better.

Rattendorf Ratings

Many thanks to everybody who played and rated Rattendorf over the last few weeks, and left us such kind words and valuable feedback. Our team's programmer (@NoAim91) has been hard at work adding new features to the game, so keep an eye on the itch.io page or our twitters (@randomhuman and @No_Aim91) for updates in the new year. Also check out our composer, oniwaka, on soundcloud if you want to keep track of what he's working on.

Congratulations of course to the winners and placers and everybody who took part, and many thanks to @pov, it has been a great experience as always and I'm already looking forward to Ludum Dare 41!

The turnout... pretty basic?

This is the first time I've done a Compo in LD, mainly due to the simplistic requirements and output of BASIC itself. I just had to copy-paste the string display and clear screen commands as I wrote the story. All in all, I spent only around 8 hours completing this. So how does Excessive stack up?

ld40results.jpg

Judging from the scores, rankings, and the comments left at the game page, it seems not everyone embraced my concept of a kinetic novel programmed in an archaic language and meant for retro systems. But that's OK. It's a fun proof of concept that I can hopefully implement in a future game that will have this style of presentation.

Well then, belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone!

TH2S2:GP results – Pretty good

Screen Shot 2017-12-28 at 8.58.12 PM.png

Well, I was really hoping for top 10 in humor. In the end, this got a lower humor score than my last entry, Globe Guzzler! I suspect that people didn't play the game long enough for it to get truly zany and hilarious. Also, purposefully creating a broken and unpolished game is not the best way to get unilaterally high scores. :-)

Thanks everyone for playing!

Nice, cracked the top 100!

This was my first game jam and I feel like I almost died but I guess that's part of the fun. Definitely won't be my last. :)

Untitled-1.jpg

Thanks to everyone who played!

Very pleased that Permanence got 1st overall, that would've been my pick. <3

Follow me on https://twitter.com/mytoboggan if you like, my first commercial release is coming out January 19th (a much warmer puzzle game than this one) and you can get updates about it there.

Lastly, I'll push an update for One Matter sometime in the new year with more polish and improved controls, so keep an eye out for that too! xo C

First Jam Performance

uhm guys.....am i the last?

1514512512095.jpg

i, actually, can't play much, work is killing me slowly....i got angry to myself these past days,

sorry that my "rabbit" is very bad shape

(~~inner self: but hey, look that audio, and you can create game in just 2 days~~)

i need to be better next time, also this game is created within 8 hours so i wasn't surprised with this rank, at least average not below 1

next time i'll make more than this, it's no good to angry to yourself for being the last, what i need is study more and experience, also experimenting more......i need drawing and 3d modeling course

Thanks everybody!

My compo and jam entry both performed really well and I would like to thank everybody that played and rated my games! And congratulations to @pedro-medeiros on https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/to-the-depths for taking the #1 spot in graphics for the compo!

Have a nice evening everybody :D

Critter Clutter - It's over!

The contest has ended - Ludum Dare 40 was a fun one and it was our best attempt so far. We're all quite happy with our scores.

We kept our game idea simple and self explanatory, which has been our challenge in the past. Our goal was to perform better than last time and we have achieved that. We'll see everyone for LD41 in a few months!

scores.png

Beyond THAT - We also have a little contest of our own so if the following winners would please comment on this post with the best way to contact them, we'll get the prizes doled out:

final.png

@voxel, @manbeardgames, @johnsarna - you three took the scoreboard's top 3 positions! When we uploaded this game I expected the high score to be in the neighborhood of 15,000 or so, and my personal best is around 33,000. You guys put me to shame at my own game.

Nice work!

Top 10 = Post-Comp Web Build

Thanks everyone for the votes and most of all the feedback!

10th place is my highest overall finish ever.

It's been a wild ride:

LD40-3-WebBuild-small.gif

But unlike those guys, we made it.

To celebrate I've uploaded a Web build with some post-compo changes, linked from the Dangle Copter page.

Hope everyone had fun this LD, and that we'll see each other again next time. It's always amazing to see what people come up with.

PSA: Rated Games

Not every game is rated. So if you're like me, and you really want to see how "eh" your game is, look no further. Here's how many games ACTUALLY got ratings in each category.

Compo: - Overall: 677 - fun: 677 - Innovation: 677 - theme: 660 - graphics: 677 - audio: 507 - humor: 567 - mood: 628

@jason-kennedy got these numbers by "scrapping the API." He posted them here. Unfortunately, I have no idea what that means, or how to do that. But I do know how to scroll through the results while getting hype to some 21 Savage.

Jam: - Overall: 1158 - fun: 1158 - Innovation: 1158 - theme: 1157 - graphics: 1065 - audio: 714 - humor: 970 - mood: 1080

(I got 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 thousand games to scroll through...)

SECOND PLACE FOR THE COMPO!

BURROWEDTIME.png rating.PNG

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

Burrowed Time came SECOND in the Compo Event! Wowza! There's a good chance I'll expand on this game at some point, even with something like local multiplayer - we'll see!

I'm currently developing my life's project: NYKRA , which is a game about being alone in the first born galaxy. You can follow it's development HERE ON TWITTER

Thanks again for the love <3 This was a lot of fun, and it was good to get back into it - since I've been doing Ludum Dare since... heck, 2012? Something like that!

Crimson Reco- eh, Resonance! Announcement trailer + new version

First, we want to thank everyone for the awesome feedback, and boosts of motivation when we saw that we actually got 14th in Overall, as well as 4 other categories in top 100! feelsgoodman.png That's amazing, and we got so excited that we slapped a trailer together, as well as a sneak peak of what's to come for the new version! https://youtu.be/b1ehK4OXAmo We also went ahead and created an itch.io page for the newer updates, so be sure to check it out to stay updated! https://meneerguus.itch.io/crimson-resonance

LD40 Results and Review

Thanks a ton to everyone who checked out my game in the last month, it really means a lot to me. Ever since I entered the sphere of AdultLand™ almost two years ago, I've been in a creative rut---not just gamedev, but nearly anything I've tried to personally pursue. Heck, even Junk at its core is a reflection on the last two years of my life. LD40 was pretty much the first personal project I've completed in the last two years, so I'm really happy that others were able to get something out of it. Hopefully I can continue to ride on this wave of energy and make cooler things soon.

Good luck to everyone and your future endeavors! And as always,

ld40_small.png

Final score

I finished my first LD! I don't think I got a great score, but I don't really mind. Congratulations to those who won!

My Final Results

My game's results were: Results.PNG

I would have liked to get higher than my game from LD39: LastYearResults.PNG

To be honest, I think My LD39 Game was better than this times so I should probably try harder next time. Can't wait for LD41!

Ludum Dare 40 Results!

I've had a great time with Ludum Dare 40 it challenged me beyond of what I expected of myself and gave me a real challenge. Generally speaking I wanted to get 2.5 atleast on all categories, which I would call pretty above average for someone like me who only has a few months in Game Development. When the results came in today I was pleasently surprised that I was nearly on my target.

Unbenannt.PNG

For my first Ludum Dare I am extremely happy with my results and any doubts I had before-hand have faded away by now. However I, of course have to face the music and give myself some critisisms as well.

- FUN - The category that I performed worst in was Fun. This mainly has to do with my next point but generally speaking the game lacked an interesting Gameplay mechanic to keep people interested. Next time I'll make sure to also think how well I am able to execute my idea not only for the Theme but also for the "game" part of it.

- User Interface - This is the one that most of the commenters touched on. It was difficult to tell which bar was which and a lot of the UI in general wasn't labelled. I also didn't have time to implement a basic tutorial... well that's a lie, making a tutorial didn't even cross my mind. Next time I HAVE to consider the actual person on the other side playing the game.

- Me being an idiot - I actually lost my game file due to my own stupidity. How is that possible you ask? Well, I must have tried to move some of my files to another folder (probably a GITHub repo) and accidentally deleted / replaced my new files with an early prototype. So now I've lost everything sadly :(. If you want proof by the way you can check my GIT repo on my game page. Thank Gabe though I uploaded before that happened.

Anyway, Ludum Dare has been an amazing experience and I'm 100% competing again in April, however with more knowledge and hopefully less stupidity. Thanks for reading if you did and have a good daz <3

And here is a Timelapse Video:

The score is here!

Hello, my dear fellow LDers!

The final scores are here and it means it is time to evaluate the end result.

So far I had 2 games that made it to the ranking:

Below are the scores for my latest game and their difference compared to my other ranked game:

  • Overall: 2.909 (-0.091)
  • Fun: 2.606 (-0.161)
  • Innovation: 3 (-0.267)
  • Theme: 3.03 (-0.603)
  • Graphics: 2.924 (+0.091)
  • Humor: 1.75 (-0.596)
  • Mood: 2.55 (+0.031)

As you can see, I have been rated lower almost across the board. Definitely something to ponder on "What wend wrong", and I suspect that the reason this happened is best described by a comment by @justinooncx:

Interesting game! Or, well, tech demo.

The simplistic Runaway convoy, was actually ready to go on Saturday, so I had all Sunday to add "unnecessary" bits like the animated stars in the background, teleportation effects, sounds and even a Star Wars - style intro before the game. And this gave the game a fair bit more polish. It felt more solid. More complete. Even though terribly short and non re-playable.

Maze Crawler, while being a fair bit better game IMO ((At least developing it definitely felt more satisfying for me)) was nowhere near complete. More than half of the items in the game were placeholder assets slapped together just to have something playable. The game has a lot of potential, but that is what it is - potential. And there is no rating for "potential" in the scoring system. :)

Now a bit more detailed thoughts on each of the ratings individually (Will skip "overall"):

Fun During the preparation to LD I wanted to make a more Fun game than my previous one. It really looks like I failed at that. The main reason here I believe was a poor movement system. TBH the movement script was one of the placeholders, and was tuned to work with maze generated of tiles 3 units wide, and them the final maze was generated of tiles 5 units wide, so the movement ended up being almost half slower than I intended it to be. Which made traversing the maze a bit too slow. Less fun. And honestly - I haven't figured good movement speeds in the post-LD version yet.

Innovation This is actually surprising to me, as I definitely felt more innovating developing this game compared to previous one... But I guess this reflects that traversing a maze is a fairly well-known concept for a game, while the puzzle in Runaway Convoy was not familiar to many players... and this is what this score is reflecting.

Theme Again - I am a bit surprised by score drop here. But I guess this is due to Theme implementation in my last game was pretty obvious, while here... well... The game was set up in a way that you could collect all the keys without ever noticing that the maze is changing as you go. I have a few ideas how to fix it in the post-LD version, but only play test will tell if they are going to kill the fun of the game or not.

Graphics are up. And I guess this is mostly thanks to the game being 3D and floors/walls using some normal mapping. Which (surprisingly) didn't take me that long to make.

Humor Didn't really care that much about this rating. So not surprised it went down.

Mood went up a little. And I really hope that I can improve it a lot more by adding better lighting, environmental props and sounds.

So... What can we learn from all this? One thing that is still haunting me is wasting a lot of time on one thing, that I don't end up completing anyway. This time it was character model animation. Maybe a good thing for me would be to set up a limit for time I spend on one thing in a row. Like if I don't finish something in an hour, I put it aside and start working on something else. This will let me get more simple things done which would make game more complete overall.

Not sure how deal with the experimental creep though.

All of Saturday and a good portion of Sunday I spent working on effectively one thing - the maze generation script that required quite some optimization. ((And the version that was published still had room for improvement. I have already reduced the time it takes to build a maze by at least half! And I think this can be improved even further by more aggressive application of multi-threading)). Yes, this is definitely goes under the "Don't work with stuff you don't have experience with" advice, but.. that is just my thing I guess. It is really hard for me not to push the limits... even if that reads as "bang my head on the limits fruitlessly".

I am still planning to publish the post-LD version sometime soon. But I don't know when would it be.

I hope you enjoyed playing my game, and this LD in general. I definitely did!

Will see you next time.

And please let me know what you think in the comments below.

Cheers!!!

3rd place in mood! Thank you sooo much!

Our little fellow Pajuu got the 3rd place in mood! We are really happy about that

The main goal of the entry was to create a specific atmosphere and to bring certain emotions to the player. So it's amazing to see that we accomplished that in this jam.

My best ranking so far! 13th in Overall

…and 5th in Fun, and 4th in Theme! I'm very happy :) LD38 had been my best entry so far, with 90th in Overall and I was extremly happy I got into the Top 100… Now LD40, my game got even better results! I have no words, thanks a lot! :D

My entry is grooOW!, a mix between a platformer and a puzzle game. It's made with JavaScript and you can play it in your browser:

Short lessons

Results aren't really pleasing (so they're small), but I think I should be glad I didn't get too good scores with so much incompleteness. You can't even imagine all I had (and have!) in mind looking at my game right now. Some simple things that would improve the result didn't made it to the game.

resultadosP.png

Highlights

In this entry, I've made my: - 1st AI of this kind ever - 2nd platformer ever - 1st entry with real music

The music almost alone (only sounds of coins besides) gave me 3 stars in audio.

Lessons

  • I've got (as in last LD) solid platformer mechanics. But, being the 2nd time EVER I make that (didn't really try before LD 39... maybe tried once, not too hard), it took too much time. I need warmup.
  • ~5h making the music and it's kind of complete but incomplete. To much time spent polishing. I need better tools and a better workflow. And warmup.
  • Someone had borrowed my P2/P10 plug. I wasted too much time trying to record my (musical) keyboard playing the MIDI. And ended up recording my note playing it. And wasted time trying to get the recording right. Warmup warmup warmup

I have got almost no other games to a playable state besides my 4 LD entries. So, to sum up: Warmup. Beginning right now.

Next year I hope I'll get there!

Lots of great games!

Thank you guys for voting, there are so many games yet to be discovered, some are just funny and some deeply inspire me. I'm really glad to be part of this community!

Though I'm happy with my results, it`s not about places, we push our boundaries, learn to start and complete, definitely planning to be next time as well! DoctorHudLoop.gif

oh. I'm disappointed sadfrog.jpg

At first I want to thank all peaople who give this game some time U'r gr8. Well it's the worst score I'm reached in Ludum Dare ever. But I don't want to stop! Solid kick in the ass is sometimes better then prizes and medals. Mayby next time will be better. Wish me good luck.

Thank you for playing and rating Where The Grains Are

Thank you to everyone who played and rated the game Where The Grains Are. Your feedback has been wonderful!

I really love LDJAM community for giving the chance to #poetic #altgames that are beautiful but not especially fun to play

But I guess it's not a good thing to make a game where conformity with the theme becomes obvious only at the end of the game (event if the game takes just a few minutes to complete..)

Thank you!

This is the first time I've ever been ranked for my game in LD, here are my results:

Innovation: 399th (3 average from 22 ratings)

Huge thanks to everyone that played it, and I hope to do better when April rolls around.

Thank you, we had a blast!

First of all, we want to thank everyone who played and rated our game!

We had an amazing weekend in which we learned a lot and did some good team bonding. This was our first Ludumdare, even though we weren't able to apply all of our ideas, We are satisfied with the finale Build.

Factory Panic Ratings/Thoughts

So the results announcement has come and gone, and I needed an evening to really sit and think about my results in this LD Compo. So how did Factory Panic do?

Overall: 346th (3.368 average from 36 ratings)
Ranking +60 (from 286), Rating +0.079 (Compared with LD38 entry "Destruction Zone")

Fun: 460th (3 average from 36 ratings)
Ranking +320 (from 140), Rating -0.556

Innovation: 301st (3.258 average from 35 ratings)
Ranking -128 (from 429), Rating +0.622

Theme: 141st (3.864 average from 35 ratings)
Ranking -226 (from 367), Rating +0.753

Graphics: 372nd (3.221 average from 36 ratings)
Ranking -30 (from 402), Rating +0.403

Audio: 215th (3.274 average from 33 ratings)
Ranking +27 (from 188), Rating +0.111

Humor: 367th (2.574 average from 29 ratings)
Ranking -62 (from 429), Rating +0.736

Mood: 411th (2.935 average from 33 ratings)
Ranking +19 (from 392), Rating +0.162

All in all, not a bad showing. Averaging my placement and turning that into a percentile puts me roughly where I was during my last LD participation in LD38. It just feels really weird knowing that Factory Panic is a better game than Destruction Zone but somehow seems to have performed worse, despite mostly positive feedback.

Oh well, my skills are being sharpened, and that's the most important takeaway from this event. Congratulations to everyone who entered on making a game!

See you all in April!

POST GAME UPDATE

I wanted to post a v2 update to my game now that voting is complete... so if anyone wants to give it a try:

(web) https://jeffreychaplin.github.io/LudumDare40_SpaceMinerNiner/v2

(windows) https://www.dropbox.com/s/az041v984o6e6ce/LudumDare40SpaceMinerNinerv2.zip?dl=0

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/space-miner-niner

It's still not finished, but it is closer to my original idea... You are a space miner collecting different minerals from asteroids... shooting an asteroid breaks it apart (to get the mineral), but creates more smaller, indestructible asteroids that will cause damage to your ship when touched. The more minerals you try to get, the worse it is.

Control your ship with the arrow keys (left/right to turn, up for thrust); ctrl, shift or space to fire; z or x to toggle a 'bigger picker upper' on/off.

I will keep pushing updates as they become available. Thanks again for giving it a try!

Eyam, Survive the Plague v1.1

With LudumDare 40 having officially come to a close I thought the time was right to release a POSTJAM version with some changes. So if you haven't had a chance to try Eyam yet now is your chance to try the best version yet! This update includes much needed changes to clarify gameplay and improve the overal experience. Even though voting has ended feedback is always welcome.

PLAY EYAM NOW

screenshot2.png

Complete changelist:
  • Added descriptive tooltips for all buildings and upgrades
  • Added improved Icons for all buildings and upgrades
  • Added new visual models for all buildings so you can clearly see the upgrade level of each building.
  • Increased starting gold to 300.
  • Included several balancing changes to all gameplay algorithms.

This ain't bad for my first game

I placed 144th for fun which is the category I was aiming for, so I guess that ain't that bad. Next time I'd like to go sub 100 and do better in the overall ratings. I should probably stick to a more abstract artstyle and prep some tech like leaderboards etc. in advance...

2017-12-29 18em21/em46_sm.png

BTW. How do you rate mood? That's a bit of odd rating or is it just me?

See you all in April.

Thank you all :)

Well this is really good - i mean i reached the Top 50 in Theme and 126th in Innovation. Also the other values are better as then from my last game which means i become better :)

results_compare.jpg

Also i plan to make a full version from this idea (launch on mobile too). But with more levels and improved graphics.

I will update this here too.

Thank you all for your help and feedback.

Results for ANTagonist

I am writing this almost 24 hours after the release of Ludum Dare 40 results, and my rating, as always, is somewhat surprising to me. I'm going to try to break it down a bit.

ANTagonist Screen Shot.PNG

LD40.PNG

The raw numbers do not tell the full story, so I've created a chart that shows where I placed in each LD, along with my finishing percentage. What it shows is that I consistently place above the middle of the pack (40 - 50%), with some results as high as top 30%.

With the exception of Audio (always my weak spot), my results are equal or slightly better than LD39, and that's good! I know that the rating results are highly subjective, but my expectations were that I would place a little higher.

LD40 Breakdown.PNG

LD40 Plotted.png

Looking back at my last 3 LDs, I believe that I have greatly improved my game development skills, even though the scores do not really show that. My first 3 LDs are somewhat of an experiment in Game Jams. Starting with LD38, I started to really focus on bells, whistles, and polish, in addition to game play. More sounds, more graphics (even though my graphics talent is severely limited), more effects. The chart above does seems to show that, and I am glad.

In Summary

I am both very critical and very defensive about my games, and my expectations never match what the results show.  That's a "me" problem.

I've always thought that several of the LD games would make a good stand-alone game if I continued development, but the scores seem to discourage me from doing so. I have had an idea I have been working on several times over the years and ANTagonist may fit that theme. Regardless of the results, I may continue development. I am just not sure at this point.

In Closing

LD40 was a blast, even though the stress level was a bit high.

Thanks to all that played and rated ANTagonist.

On to Ludum Dare 41...
