I only said yes if it was exceptionally good.
As always, there are a lot of theme suggestions, and relatively few that I like. That being said, the site and community generally do a pretty good job of paring down the ideas to a more palatable few.
Here are a few common things I downvote theme ideas for. If your theme is on this list as a "bad" example, sorry! That being said, this is all subjective, and different people enjoy different types of themes. I usually "yes" about 10% of the themes that come my way.
These theme ideas don't have a lot of room for interpretation, and generally force participants into one genre or narrative route. In my opinion, Small World fits in this category, and while there were a few different and innovative games for LD38, a significant portion were "little guy hopping on a little planet" rehashes. - apocalypse now - Candy will make you evolve - YOU are the princess waiting to be rescued in the castle - godlike llamas
Counter to my first point, some theme ideas are a bit too open-ended. A good theme idea acts as a sort of jumping-off point, and gives you a few game ideas in the first few minutes. - Most Valueable - Who are you?
Everybody has their own favorite genre, visual style, or development environment. Putting limitations on how the game looks or plays not only discourages people who already have an established style, but also makes for a fairly repetitive playing/rating period. These can be great restrictions to place on yourself for the jam, but please don't force someone else to follow some specific visual or gameplay restriction. - 3D - Four Colors Only - First Person without WASD
Often, these also violate #3. They impose some restriction that often could be part of a really good game. However, it isn't something that I'd like to play 50 of during the weeks after the jam. Again, these could be good self-imposed restrictions on top of the LD theme. If I learned anything from Seven Pillars, it's that people generally don't like it when they can't figure out how the controls work. - Hard to control - 1 Button movement - Movement is unintuitive
These tend to be the first things I think of to "disqualify" themes during Theme Slaughter, but occasionally things run counter to them. I actually rather liked Combine Two Incompatible Genres despite violating #3 a bit, and it resulted in some really good games.
What sort of metrics to you generally use, and how do you disagree with me?
So, this will be my first ever game dev event and im wishing everyone a good luck! I'll be using unity for this event as i think participating in these kind of event will make learn more as an aspiring game dev. I hope i can finish one on my first ever attempt!
I did it all and at times i wasnt sure if the sugestions are generated and its all just some sick joke - because somehow the same themes apeared again and again. Sure, a lot of people might have the same thougts but it was really extreme, how the same stuff came over and over again, often even using the exact same way to name it. I wasnt even sure if stuff that i already slaughtered came back (even thou i know that shlould be impossible) is it just me or did you ffel simular?
HYYYYYYYYPE!!! 9 days lefts (if we divide by 3 it can be a zelda reference :D) Let's do this! LD43 will be our first LD but not our first gamejam (the second in fact the first one was the GameJam+ in Bordeaux for those who know). We are two dev in python and Unity (and also Gamemaker but rusty). What? a game need drawing sound and other thing? Ha... It will be good! We can do it! Hope this edition will be good for all
May destiny favor you and have fun!!!
PS: The themes all look great :D
I'm super excited for the jam, this is my first one and im working on it with 2 others! Must say though can people make themes other than just single word themes or nothing is as it seems please. My fingers are getting tired and I've killed a lot of themes bois.
This is what I feel like doing this.

All the progress screenshots will be on my Twitter: https://twitter.com/Khud0Steam
Good luck everyone! Prepare loads of food and coffee :D

Bit more generous than last time. Shame we can't look back at our list. I recall seeing "Game mechanics described by a famous song title" which could (imo) help you brainstorm some new things, and not limit you at all :thumbsup_tone2:
Just got through the entire list ... A LOT of repetition ;)
Is a top 5 or 10 or something show up before the final theme is announced?
I'm planning to organize a Ludum Dare event in my University. The thing is every person to come will have different skills and skill levels. I was thinking it would be nice, say if a skilled artist to draw some sprites for multiple games, a good programmer to debug multiple games or someone with no experience to generate sfx with bfxr for multiple games. But I can't find the rules regulating involvement with multiple games or submiting multiple entries. I also wonder if it's okay for one to work on their compo game while contrubiting to a jam game. how flexable are the rules
Anyone wanna make a Text Based Game for LD43? :D Contact me on Discord @ Bioblaze Payne#6459
Engine: Unreal Engine 4
I can do the Programming. If we can figure out something interesting I can also make Web Services and such.
