Slice of Scythe

Slice of Scythe is supposed to be a funny, dark, and well-written game, which is putting a lot of pressure on me as I write this. If you don’t think this post is clever/eloquent/engaging, then why should you play the game, right? It freaks me out. Please play our game. It’s all we have.

Speaking of which, Slice of Scythe is an interactive story combined with a series of minigames where you, the 19-year-old cousin of Death, terrorize suburbia to purchase a hat. Its creation was a Herculean feat of strength and endurance by our team leader and sole programmer @cnnmon, who also served as a support artist (some backgrounds/assets) and UI designer. The rest of the art (including the all the character design and expositional storyboarding) was drawn by our lead artist and hat enthusiast, @odii. I (@miyolophone) wrote all the dialogue and music, and provided emotional support when possible.

We uploaded our post-jam version several weeks ago, which includes all the character art we didn’t have time to implement and some other minor aesthetic modifications/bugfixes. If you’ve got some time before judging ends, we’d be very pleased if you could check it out!

One coin, two faces and a crowd of evil rich dudes

Face for Death is a 2D runner platformer videogame developed for the April 2019 Lumdum Jam, in where you play a two-faced coin with personality disorders who has to escape from a city full of evil and greedy rich dudes.

What's new in 1.3?

Well, this week we were bussy again. This time we can say we are closer to a playable prototype, even though we have to improve a few more things. We have already finished the modular level generation prototype, its now auto-generating and scaling dificulty and speed by scoring distance ('Look at him, its flying!'). Also we have implemented some new mechanics, obstacles and pickeables, you can join our jam site and see more details about 1.3 updates. As said, its a prototype version and it would being scaled and polished gradually, so dont hesitate to alert us of any possible bug!

Congratulations all for your jam games

We hope you enjoyed the party and could discover new and interesting gamedev stuffs like we did. LD is full of amazing non-profit works, with such simple goals as having a good time with mates, learning from others and sharing experiences. That is more than enough, and it is also great.

Your life is not currency.

Thanks for playing!

Postjam version: I'm in! Target release date May 24th

It's been a month now, the results of the ldjam are about to released. I'm quite happy with the progress of the game, from a basic prototype with a broken camera system to a complete game!

TitleDark_A.jpg

The ludum dare was an excellent way to create a quick prototype, figuring the look and feel and the core mechanics of the game.

instaPromo 21c.jpg

What type of game is it?

It's an adventure-simulation hybrid game, think "Don't starve" meets "Animal Crossing", with a touch of Sim City.

Trading, farming and exploring is required to make your village grows. You will encounter many people in your adventures, some will be friends, others enemies. Choose wisely who you accept in your little town and make it grows!

Pulled an All Nighter to finish this track for the game!

NEW Darkwave / Metal song for my game, "Darkling":

PLAY SONG

The song still needs some polish, layering, and other sections added, but I think it fits the vibe of my game fairly well and am pretty happy with it. Guitar played by me, and I used Ableton and Propellerhead Reason for drum and synth sounds.

The jam was fun, this time we managed to plan the entire game the first night rather then our usual "get a rough idea and just refine it as we go". We've been thinking about ways to expand this idea so that we could make a full game and release it, let us know of any cool ideas!

You can play it below:

Ludum Dare 45, October 4th-7th @ 6 PM EST/22:00 UTC (3 hours earlier)

TL;DR: The headline says it all. New month, at the new time. See you again in early October!

As our April event comes to a close, we finally begin the 2 events per year schedule change announced summer of last year. We ran 3 events per year for a decade. Frankly I should have stopped sooner (at most I'd get a 2 month break between events and planning), but I like nice round numbers like 10.

Last summer we also did a test: running a Ludum Dare event 3 hours earlier. This meant folks in the UK and Europe could get a theme announcement at a much more reasonable hour: midnight or 1 AM. And you might say this test went too well, that our servers couldn't actually handle the load (... though 2018 was the year of Spectre and Meltdown, and the early mitigation patches were pretty rough on server performance).

Anyway, my point is a lot of people liked it. Even people on my side of the pond liked it (North America). So it seems fitting that if the schedule is changing anyway, we might as well make the 3 hour change permanent.

From here on event scheduling looks something like this:

  • April Events: 9 PM EST (01:00 UTC). Mid-late month. Avoid Easter, US Tax day, GDC and PAX East.
  • October Events: 6 PM EST (22:00 UTC). Early month.

April events in the classic timeslot, and October events in the new one.

April tends to be a very busy month for me (work+taxes), especially if I make it out to one of the mentioned shows (GDC, PAX East). August's have been getting harder and harder to find dates that work, that we've even had to bump Ludum Dare events to July (and this August I'm best-man at a wedding sooo). But October's, at least from where I'm sitting right now seem ripe with possibility.

Also hey! Do you remember the October Challenge? This was a special yearly event where we encouraged folks to publish a game and earn $1. It was neat.

While I'm not quite ready for us to kick off an October Challenge this year (not to mention I might want to tweak the format), this is something I'd like to start planning for again. Hence my leaning towards early October dates. Make something, and take the rest of the month doing something with it.

My thinking is that October's could be more than just a Jam month for us. I like the idea of evolving October a big month-long celebration of the things we do here. A Dare Month or something catchier. What other things can we Dare you to do?

These expanded October plans are still in the concept phase, but as we inch closer our 20th anniversary (and 48th event), it's time to start thinking about what Ludum Dare evolves in to next. We have a good thing with the Jam, lots of little things to fix, lots of data to collect in one place, but I think it's also important to start thinking about and charting where we go next.

Stay Informed!

Wrap Up

That's it for me. We'll see you in October!

Basil Price: Mint Investigator Post-Compo

@JamesOliverMusic and I have been hard at work at a post compo version of Basil Price: Mint Investigator. The game is a tongue in cheek Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney inspired visual novel/detective/puzzle hybrid where you gather clues, figure out who is counterfeiting bills and us the clues you've gathered to get them convicted. So, actually, sort of a reverse Ace Attorney now that I think about it...

The graphics have received a pretty major overhaul. Here's the compo version of the initial conversation: dialog.gif and post compo postcompo1.gif

The first case was cut short due to time, but we got to finish it. So if you played it once and enjoyed it, it is worth another playthrough. The dialogs have changed (humor is hopefully still the same) and after your first conviction there is another all new section to play through.

Meet the characters

Basil Price

basil.png Our hero and protagonist. He lives for his work which is currency. So you could say HIS LIFE IS CURRENCY, which is the only relation to the theme you will find in the whole game.

Penny Farthing ##

penny.png Basil's boss. It isn't that she breaks the 4th wall. Its just that the 4th wall doesn't exist and talking to you is the most natural thing in the world. She is the only character who does it now, I promise.

Encyclopedia Gray

gray.png Basil's "friend" who is always happy to be sent on one of Basil's wild goose chases.

Foodtruck Phil

foodtruckphil.png I've got nothing to say about him.

D Mooney Bagg

bagg.png Is an inspiring actor who can play a large range of characters but is always typecast as a dock working criminal for some reason. Probably the bandanna.

I also put a lot more time into the backgrounds. Now they look... better. Not Good necessarily, but better than they did. Compo precompo2.gif
