LD 44 April 26–29, 2019

Virtual billboard finally released... kinda

Note:You're going to see a lot posts of this game, because I can't contact people that were interested in this. I'm very sorry.

Hey check this out: https://youtu.be/tk23dofa9wA

Finally that virtual billboard is released. At least for now.

If you don't like using it, then I get it. It's really unfinished, but you can download this "demo" that was released due to ldjam. Write a comment if you are gonna use it! There are a lot of more features to come.

Plans for LD 44

This year will be a bit different than other years I've done Ludum Dare. I plan to showcase my final game at a BBQ on Sunday to a bunch of friends before we watch the 3rd episode of Game of Thrones. With that in mind, I've already selected couch co-op as one of the main features I'll be aiming for. Bonus points if it's GoT themed!

Here's to a great Ludum Dare for everyone!

LD44 is Here!

Capture.PNG

As you can tell I only have a keen interest on a few of the final theme, but knowing Ludum Dare there is a greater chance one of the red ones will get picked. As such I'm spending tonight brainstorming ideas that could suit one or all of them, so when the theme is announced I'll have an idea I can grasp.

I also have my rules, made with a slight adjustment from the last Ludum Dare I did after some feedback.

  • Gameplay First - Your game might look/sound great and have a really nice menu but it won’t be a well-built game if not a finished game if you leave it at the last minute. Have your game prototype ready by the end of the first day.
  • Small Scope - My general amount of scope for a games jam is one main/unique game mechanic and two optional ones. It’s not worth putting so many mechanics and features in your game if you don’t have the time for it.
  • Know your Tools - I plan to use my own C++ engine, as well as Photoshop and Piskell for visuals and BFXR/LMMS for audio. All of which I’ve used previously and know very well. While supporting many platforms including web will help, it’s not worth using an engine or software because everyone else uses it and makes great stuff with it.
  • Stick Mostly with What You Know - Trying to learn a new mechanic, genre or art style as a project is fun, but don’t over do it, especially when you only have 48 hours. Time spent struggling or figuring out how to implement something new could be used to deliver more of what you already know how to implement.
  • Make Your Content Easy and Noticeable - Don’t feel you have to put the extra effort in how your game looks and sounds when you’re at that stage, but if you do don’t focus it on something the players aren’t gonna notice. Sometimes big simple designs work better.
  • 621 - Six hours of sleep, Two meals and One shower per day. Don’t pull all-nighters, don’t skip or replace meals with energy drinks and savoury stuff and calm yourself down for a bit while being hygienic.
  • Take a Walk - A breath of fresh air will help you think of solutions to that one bug that you cannot figure out how to fix or that mechanic that doesn’t feel right.
  • Find a Friend - If you’re gonna go the jam route, see if you can get friends on board. If you work together it’ll be more collaborative and less pressure on you. Be sure to find a decent way to thank them after it’s all over. Even if you're going solo for the compo, having a friend to bounce off ideas and improvements is always beneficial and eases off stress.

Best of luck everyone! I look forward to seeing the output.

Looking forward to my 12th LD jam!

Hyped for another gamejam! Hoping to spend most of the weekend with some relaxed jamming from home. Might make some music-related game.

First LD

I'm excited to participate in my first LD! I'll be using Pico8.

First time

I'm super excited to try LD for the first time !!!

Homebrew entry?

I really want to make a game for Nintendo DS but players will need an emulator or flash card to play it

I'm afraid that most of people won't be wasting their time to set this up and i won't reach even 20 votes

Take a risk and do what i want or play it save?

First Ludum Dare!

Excited for this as it will be my first Ludum Dare! I'll be using Unity and going solo as I'm still learning things. Hopefully, time will permit me to finish and I can make something to be proud of. Good luck, everyone!

Streaming with multiple monitors?

Hey LD community i'm new and I was hoping to stream the LD processes, but i use two monitors as well as multiple desktops when i'm programming. Anyone have any suggestions on which which window to stream or if there is software that follows the active monitor/window? even if you don't have suggestions i'd love to hear how you've done it in the past if you have

I'm in...if work allows me to!

Once again trying to make a game, but full of work to do!

I might use tools related with what I'm currently working with, so I might go with Phaser.

Updates on tools coming up soon!

Not that anyone minds, tho :shrug_tone1:

Good Luck and Have Fun, Everyone!

Final Round Voting

finalround.PNG

Some okay themes in the final round. I did vote for One Room and Two Button in the first one, was interested in exploring some puzzle elements, since I've recently played ZeroEscape VLR and Zero Time Dilemma

Well, there goes my favourite Theme

Really hoped for "Normal Jobs but in Space" - but sadly that one is out already. Well, we have to just take what we get, right ;-)

Anyhow, my tools are all set up, got my new Laptop up and running, Godot setup as well as the Mono Dev Environment, Git as well as all tools for Art and Music Creation set up on my iPad. So I'm ready to go!

Edit: Oh yeah, preparation will actually consist of a MTG Midnight Pre-Release of the new set. So this should be interesting!

We are almost there :D

A little bit more than 24 hours before the start of the gamejam !

ld44rOUNDReducedC1.gif

I will be streaming the game development of the jam on Twitch !

See you quite soon gamedev friends !

Almost Forgot!

Classic LD Tradition! A wallpaper! LD 44 Wallpaper.png If you have good memory then you would know this is my same wallpaper from last time except I changed the text around a bit (LD43 to LD44)... Two reasons: - Too late now to make a new one - It's already a really nice wallpaper :p Enjoy!

I want to be able to say "i am in", but...

i can't. Sadly. I competed in LD41 (and had a great time even though my own game wasn't that great - that's not what LD is about for me primarily), then missed the last two because of two birthdays. It seems like this will actually be the third one. I am crying right now  At least i will keep an eye on all the other games and will at least try to start a project just for myself and itch :D

Been working on something this week...

GJTemplate.png

Fed up with spending hours during game jam implementing things you know you've already done in every project before? Getting close to the deadline and worrying about whether you should spend time polishing your mechanics, or implementing menu screens and audio options? Want a better alternative? I did, so I've put together a simple unity project to work as a base template for pretty much any game jam game you can think of (that isn't networked multiplayer - but seriously don't even think about it when you've only got 72 hours!).

Option menus, scoreboards, healthbars, timers, scene transitions, folder structure, placeholder artwork. All the standard things that can add so much to your game jam experience but also take so much time to build when you could be coming up with something innovative and new, all here, all ready to go. Everything is as modular as possible so adding and removing elements is as simple as deleting it from the hierarchy.

I've not completely finished this project yet (still need to work on the save/load system - might be done tomorrow night before the theme announcement) and I won't be providing support for this project over the weekend (I've got my own game to worry about) but if this can help get you started, or save you some precious time feel free to use it (and drop me a note to say that you did - I'll prioritise your game for review and I'd love to see what you could do with this).

Good Luck and Have Fun!

I'm in!

Hello, everybody! I'm back for my second Ludum Dare, and this time I'll officially have a teamate too! I slowed down in GameDev-land, so I still only have my last Ludum Dare game under my belt, but that's not stopping me from participating again this year. I can't wait for it to begin!

Tools: * Godot * Affinity Photo * Affinity Designer * LMMS

Not this time but good luck everyone!

This should be my 6th consecutive but I have tons of work and I think its time to skip a ldjam :/ so good luck to everyone participating, hope that the theme is interesting!!

INN

definitely

I'm in again :)

Hello,

I'm in, and this will by my 2nd LD.

Tools and stuff:

  • Löve
  • Sublime Text 3
  • Krita
  • Audacity

I'll probably live stream most of the dev on twitch.

I'm in! Might try and get a team together too.

Can't wait to figure out the theme! It'll be my first Ludum Dare. I'll be using UPBGE!

It has a bad rep for no reason, really, because while Logic Bricks are limited Python can take it so much farther. I'll be using Logic Bricks to help speed up the dev process though.

Other things: Blender (with UPBGE), Inkscape, Audacity/Ardour/LMMS, Krita probably, GIMP. And who knows what else I have hidden on my computer in the depths of Program Files that will come in handy!

Im in!

Haven't done LD since LD 40, I didn't even end up submitting because I could not make it in time, but hopefully this time will be different! Good luck guys, really looking forward to seeing what everyone makes.

Any Game of Thrones fans jammers?

Just interesting what are your plans for Sunday's evening (or Monday's morning, like here in Russia). Do you plan to watch 3rd episode during jam? Or will you concentrate on jam instead (and have big risks to get spoilers in news feeds :))?

My choice is to finish jam first and enjoy(I hope) the show next.

I'm in for my second LD Compo, sortof...

Hi there,

Last Ludum Dare was a great experience. I learned a lot. This time I realy, realy, realy keep it simple.... :-) Chances are that I've have some extra work this weekend to finish work stuff for my job.

Deadlines... and stuff.

If that's the case, I'll enter in the Jam instead.

Good luck everybody and most importantly have a goodtime!

LD Community Theme Poll

This was created by the ludum dare community for the ludum dare community, but i wasnt sure if this was posted or not.

So here it is.

https://strawpoll.com/3bdzwp5b

Official Poll??

There is a poll on https://strawpoll.com/3bdzwp5, but is it the official, since it has the results, this is my first jam.

Hey Godot Engine Users! Need a Project Starter?

Over the years of using Godot I've had this growing project starter I tend to use for game jams that allow it. It comes with some of the things I always want to include in every project including scenes for title, credits and how to play, plus transition effects (fade out/in) between scenes and a sound track manager. Well, for this Ludum Dare I decided to package it all up and make it available for anyone who wants to use it. Just check it out at the projects GitHub page. It comes with a few other goodies which you might find useful.

As always, any feedback, good or bad, is appreciated!

I hope you find it useful if you're using the Godot Engine 3.1 this jam!

Easy Continuous Integration with GitHub and Unity! ⚙

Join the Toda Community on Discord

In many game jams, it can be difficult to find time to build and test your project. Continous Intergration can go through that process for you so when you are ready for release, you can just download your builds directly from Unity without having to wait around.

Continous intergration combined with some sort of version control and can make collaborative development and testing a whole lot simplier. With Unity's Cloud Build product, you can create a basic pipeline for your application in no time.

While you can get CI to work with other game engines, Unity Cloud Build, and this blog is focused on Unity. If you have questions on getting CI to work on another engine, shoot me a message on discord.

Note: Unity Cloud Build requires Unity Teams Advances which requires either Unity Pro or a $9 subscription.

If you have 0 experince with GIT or version control, I suggest taking a look at GitHub for Unity.

Required Products

Setting up GitHub and Creating a Deployment Key

  1. Commit and push your project to GitHub

Screenshot from 2019-04-25 18-45-18.png

PRIVATE REPO ONLY Move onto Configuring Cloud Build if you are using a public repository

  1. Go Settings tab then Deploy keys on the sidebar.

  2. Generate an SSH key, this is how Unity will access your GitHub repository.

3w. WINDOWS Run the Puttygen program and click generate. puttygen.png

3l. LINUX Run ssh-keygen Screenshot from 2019-04-25 18-56-13.png

  1. Click add deploy key on GitHub then open your public key in a text editor and paste its contents into GitHub, give it a title then click Add key.

Configuring Unity Cloud Build

  1. Login to Unity Developer Cloud

  2. Find your project, if you don't have a Unity Developer Cloud project, create one!

  3. In your project, go to Cloud Build -> Config Screenshot from 2019-04-25 19-05-05.png

  4. Click Setup Cloud Build

  5. Go to the manual tab

  6. Put in your GitHub's SSH address and select GIT for SCM type. Screenshot from 2019-04-25 19-07-52.png

  7. Click Next: Access -> and select the first platform you would like to build.

  8. PRIVATE REPO ONLY Put in the private key you generated and click next.

  9. Make some configuration decisions, such as which branch to build.

  10. Now click next and BAM, you got yourself some continous intergration.

Feel free to setup additional build for every platform, in our LD43 project, we have six builds, debug version for Windows (64 bit) and Linux running off our develop branch and a release version for Windows (32 and 64 bit), Linux, and Mac.

If you have any questions please leave a comment or join our discord.

SUPER Limited Time

I lost count of how many game jams I have done (30+ for sure!). Most of them have been Global Game Jams and Ludum Dare. I feel like one thing is constant as I add more game jams to my belt. I tend to have smaller windows of time available to participate due to life getting in the way.

I will be jamming most of Saturday and any other tiny windows of opportunities that pop up! Wish me luck! Excited to see what the theme is.

My First Game Jam!

Hello, fellow game devs! This will be my first game jam, and I'm really looking forward to it. I don't have a ton of experience yet, but I'm excited to see what I can come up with. :)

14th Ludum Dare! Goal: Learn to use Godot

Coming from a Construct -> Unity background, I want to learn the ins and outs of Godot for a full project. The best way to do this is I N T E N S E P R E S S U R E.

Good luck to everyone! And remember to have fun and stay healthy during the contest :)

Moving the office

So this will be fun... I will be moving the office and setting everything up about four hours before the jam. I work better under pressure. I hope.

Have fun!

Planning to participate

A huge amount of classes I need to attend this week :D But I really want to participate. even if I make a crappy game. I recommend you do as well. Wish everybody luck!

I am in

This will be my first attempt at Ludum Dare from a Linux box. Should be interesting.

I will be writing the game in C using SDL2 and will use Emscripten to compile a web version.

Going to try and release a Windows and macOS version as a stretch goal but the web and Linux version will be the primary executables.

For multimedia, I will be using GIMP for graphics, Audacity for audio.

It's time to make a game

Ludum Dare 44 is my first go-round with a game jam, so it's sure to be an enlightening experience. I have experience with Unity, C#, Java, and JS, using GIMP for custom graphics, Blender for 3D work, Audacity for audio, and the wonderful Scapple by Literature & Latte for digital notes. My goal is to work with the theme and create a web-based .io game, as that genre seems tailor made for game jams. Glhf!

I'll be Streaming

Hello all i'm going to shamelessly self promote for a moment, please forgive me.

just wanted to say i'll be streaming my first real attempt at the ludum dare full from start to finish this year. if you're interested in checking it out i'll be streaming at : https://www.twitch.tv/dryocamparubicunda

What I really want to make for this jam!

Mags McFly Comp2.gif

With my last game project, Magas McFly, I found my interest in procedural level generation! I think I'll be trying to implement some new ways of making levels more fun in my jam game which I didn't get to use in my latest project.

Like: - Different room sizes. - Treasures in some rooms. - Locked rooms (Metroidvania style) - And whatever I get to plan for the jam to make in 48 hours...

In case you want to play the game: CLICK HERE

Hi

This is is my first ludum dare i hope it goes well

Here we go!

Hi, I go by Jindango on the internet.

I'm super excited to finally be participating in a game jam, hopefully this will be a structured enough of a context that I'll be able to force myself to finally make something.

I'll likely be making a game with python 2.7 and pygame for LD 44.

python 2.7 because I know it really well and it's such a great language for prototyping pygame because it's easy

I'm intentionally avoiding game making tools like Unity and UE4 at least for this first jam because I have never spent much time with them. Also I may be a bit of a hardliner ...

In the incredibly unlikely event that I have time to spare at the end of this and I like what I've made, I may attempt to port it to C++ with SDL2 and OpenGL. I used to know C++ (earlier than C++11) and OpenGL decently well and would really like to get back in to it.

I've casually streamed on twitch programming for fun in the past, mostly for friends to watch. I may do a little more over the course of the jam.

https://www.twitch.tv/jindango

This ought to be fun, can't wait to see the theme!

glhf everyone

Unity 2019 or 2018?

For those of you that plan on using Unity for this jam, are you going to use Unity 2019 or 2018?

I personally prefer going with 2018 because I know how to work with it really well, whereas there might be unexpected errors if I were to use Unity 2019.

I'm In!

My 11th Dare 😵 To all the first-timers: you can do it!

My tools: GameMaker Studio 2, Ableton Live Lite 10, Aseprite, Bfxr, Red Bull, Trail Mix, Pizza, and a Healthy Dose of Enthusiasm.

So excited!

This will be my first dare and I don't know if I'm more excited or nervous to make something alone. I'll make sure to record all the progress, from brainstorm to polishing. BTW, what is the best software to record both the screen and webcam of my PC?

My tools of choice are: Game Maker Studio 2 Aseprite A mix of some GDC free sounds and BFXR Magix Music Maker

i guess am "IN"

I wanted to use the exact same title for the post, that i used in my first jam. As they say, time flies, today I've just realized that this is my ~19th Ludumdare jam, since my first entry in the LD#25 at the old website!!!

I didn't have the chance to complete the game in every-time, specially I always work solo, but I was able to learn more about scooping, planning, gaining new skills, problem solving, and of course completing an entire game project in goddam couple of days from idea to playable!!!

As always, not sure what engine, what tools to be used, the theme always inspires all what follows! But only one thing I'm sure about, that i'll try to keep my same level of polishing in the jam delivery!

Till the show begins, I leave you with my last completed entry (this is the jam version, which made solo in 2 days)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LosD1lKhKRg

I am in !

This is my second times to join dare. This time continue solo and will use a new game engine. Here is some tools what I want to use: * Construct2 ( Game Engine ) * Aseprite / Pyxel Edit ( art ) * Bfxr (sound) * beepBox/ FamiTracker ( music...if I have time to learn... )

Hope I could finish a game!

Oh man—

Here we go, finally giving the Dare a shot for the first time. I can only wonder how far I'll get or if I'll even meet the deadline with the little experience I have and a good chunk of my time being eaten up by work, but I'm giving it my all regardless.

I'll be using: - Godot 3.1 - Bfxr, FL Studio and Audacity - Paint.NET

Wish me luck!

"in", quote unquote

i have nothing better to do this weekend, so i guess i'll do this.

i'm doing the compo because that's all i have time for.

i have my computer, one monitor, a keyboard, mouse. not sure where my wacom pad is but if i find it, i will probably use that to pixelart. will use some combination of bfxr and audacity to create some sound effects. developing in unity and visual studio on windows.

might as well stream it on my channel, too, so feel free to come by and watch me attempt to make a game this weekend.

just doing this for funsies.

happy jamming - let's all make some games! :video_game:

Yooo

I'll be giving my homemade engine another go since it's matured quite a bit since last time.

  • Ramen
  • Aseprite, Paint.net
  • Custom tools
  • Reason, foley, Audacity, various outboard gear

I'm in, I guess

I just started learning about programming 2 months ago, and I thought I might as well try this. I asked my music producer/artist friend if he'd like to help out, and he said sure! I'll be using Unity as an engine, and he'll be using Photoshop and FL Studio.

Engine almost finished

I've started work on the engine I'll use for Ludum dare 44. There are some things I'll need to fix(like the ambient occlusion) but its almost done! The entire engine will be written in java. here's a sneek peek of the engine: 0033.png sorry its a little crappy at the moment.

I'm in as always

Really excited for my 4th LD. This time hopefully I will complete on time (compo of course) My tools: - Game Make Studio - Fruity Loops Studio - Aseprite - sfxr / bfxr

Good luck everyone and have fun!

Participating in compo mode after a long while doing jam mode

Whew, it's going to be interesting trying this out in compo mode again.

I updated my template project (Haxe + HaxeFlixel) yesterday, it's on Github, if anyone else wants to use it.

https://github.com/hunttis/haxe-ld-template

I can't promise that the instructions for setting up the dev env on an empty machine are updated, but if you run into trouble, let me know.

It contains a simple menustate and a gamestate loading a TMX tilemap and simple platformer physics with keyboard control.

You're going to do great!

I'm in! First LD

Going straight for the Compo, because why not? Hopefully all my studying paid off.

  • Unity (https://github.com/Sonolil)
  • Photoshop
  • FL Studio 20 & (sfxr / bfxr)

I do have a homemade engine but it's not fully ready yet to make a game. In the meanwhile I'll be using an engine I'm already familiar with, with a lot of base code.

I'm in!

Kept you waiting, hunh?

Qst0 says "Oh. That's right. I'm in."

This will be my third time in Ludum Dare, having joined for some rounds back in 2014 and 2015 as flyinpancake. This will be my 5th time in a Game Dev Jam, and I hope it will be a turning point.

I'm looking forward to using my new skills as a programmer, designer and human to make this something special.

I'll say it one more time, super hype. I have made strides of improvement from just a few weeks ago developing Hexcross with MetaHobby. What will I learn this time?

I'll share it with everyone here on this fresh Ludum Dare Blog and hopefully even stream some too!

filledhand.png

Going to make a try

I don't know whether it'll be jam or compo material yet, but I'm going to try to put something in this weekend! I am very, very undecided on what to start with, so maybe I'm already doomed. Do I lean on C+SDL2 like before and hope for the best? Do I want to try out Godot or Inform 7? Do I want to do something crazy like find a Common Lisp engine to use?

I really like some of the theme finalists and am very skeptical of others. I'm hoping "Limited memory" wins, personally.

We'll see!

I'm in

I'm going to try to make a game with my in development LibXOR library (www.github.com/microwerx/LibXOR), Pyxel Edit, Ableton Live, some analog synthesizers, and a little bit of time.

Obligatory "I'm in" post

Being a silly person, I'm going to attempt this LD using Godot, with which I have zero experience yet. What could possibly go wrong?

All right, let's try again to get something finished.

This has to be my third or fourth time joining (after around two years of no LD). As for my Tools I am not sure what to use, except for the non Programming related like Aseprite, Gimp, sfxr/bfxr,... For the Programming part of the Project I think it will be Godot or some JavaScript Framework.

Have fun!

I'm ready (and can't wait)!

I've even made a logo and a banner to represent me and my work:Icon Thumbnail.pngSmall Banner.png

I'm in too

hmmm I'm in too for my 2nd game jam, the last one was really good fun and my game wasn't awful. Lets see if I can come up with another random game this weekend. I'll be using the Unity game engine to create mine but that depends on if I can think of a fun game that fits the theme

Free Game Jam Template for Unity

GJTemplate.png

A simple unity project set up for quick and easy game-jamming. github link

What is this, and why does it exist?

Fed up with spending hours during game jam implementing things you know you’ve already done in every project before?

Getting close to the deadline and worrying about whether you should spend time polishing your mechanics, or implementing menu screens and audio options?

Want a better alternative?

I did, so I’ve put together a simple unity project to work as a base template for pretty much any game jam game you can think of (that isn’t networked multiplayer - but seriously don’t even think about it when you’ve got less than 72 hours!).

What's in it

  • 4 Pre-made unity scenes
    • Main Menu
    • Example Gameplay Scene (set up as a 2.5d platformer with placeholder models)
    • Gameover
    • Testing Scene (for when you need to check model import scale, particle effects, or other stand-alone things you plan to make a prefab of)
  • Options Menu
    • Three audio sliders (music, effects, ambient) hooked up to an Audio Mixer
    • Graphics settings
  • Highscore system
  • Healthbars
  • Clock/Timer (counts up or down - currently rigged to 'gameover' when time runs out but this can be easily adpated)
  • Interfaces for basic game objects
    • Interactables - shows a prompt when in range, and then responds to a user input (signs, doors, chests etc)
    • Collectables - triggers a function then removes itself from the scene (currently increments score) (coins, stars etc)
    • Hazards - triggers health loss to player but remains in scene (traps, enemies etc)
    • Simple prototyping assets for all of the above
  • In game pause menu
  • Minimap
  • Camera Shake

What can I do with it?

Make a game!

But seriously, don't just download this, do nothing to change or improve the project, and then pass it off as yours. See this asa a foundation you can use to build off, or just as a handy reference for those basic features that the vast majority of games have in some form or another. Don't upload this to the asset store and try to make money off it.

If you have any suggestions, bug reports, or just want to say 'hey thanks for this, it helped me make my game' drop me a message and I'll make sure I read it and try to address your points. And if you did make a game with this, it would be so awesome to play it - that's what this project exists for after all. Let me know you made a game with this and I'll prioritise it for review.

Disclaimer

Everything is provided 'as is' and I won't be updating this during Ludum Dare/Global Game Jam (because I do those myself). Using this template requires you to understand the fundamentals of building games in unity engine, and basic c# programming knowledge. This project was designed and built in unity 2017 (long-term support) and I have not tested it with older or newer versions of the engine. Update at your own risk!

Good Luck, Have Fun

Networked games

I'm in! I've been messing around with multiplayer stuff in Gamemaker recently, and I'm thinking of implementing it in LD44! Is there anything network-related I should keep in mind/any tips before I go for it? (safety etc.)

I'm in !

So LD43 was my first, and I enjoyed it so much I came back!

  • Engine: Unity

Looking forward to this LD, I will be using Monogame. Pixel art done with Pyxel Edit, sounds with BFXR, and music with bosca ceoil.

Looking Forward to it!

Today will be my third Ludum Dare! Let's have some FUN!!!

I'm in.

Gonna be using: GameMaker Studio 1.something Audacity Maybe like FL Studio or Studio One if I'm gonna mix the music or make anything digital.

This will be my second Ludum Dare and hopefully the first one where I finish my game.

Guess i am in

Just set my alarm at 2:55 am for the start and announcement of the theme.

I divided the themes in 5 ideas for games so i at least already have some sort of direction of what to make. Wile i think all of them definitely have promise i of course rather not have some if the (in my opinion) too specific ones.

This week i used Godot mono for the weekly game jam for the first time and i really like the engine so iw ill use it again for Ludum Dare but probably will try gd script so i can also export it as webgl.

Tools: * Godot 3.1 * Aseprite * Gimp * Inkscape * Lmms * Visual studio code (or eap of Rider depending if i do GDscript or c#)

Only 15 hours and 40 mins to wait.

First LD ever

After seeing countless of videos by Brackey's and the like it's time to join! I actually decided to google it and just found out the next one is this weekend, Must be faith right? Best of luck to everyone.

(Unity, Photoshop, FL Studio and above all, Google)

Technical difficulties

Hey everyone!

Just wanted to ask if anyone had this problem on the site. So I'm trying to add a third and a forth member to our game, but just can't do it ... I can select the person, it appears in the list, I go to preview, I can see it, I click Save, it's still there, but when I reload the page, the person disappears.

If anyone has a fix for this issue, can you please let us know? :)

EDIT: Looks like it just needed some time. Never mind ... Good luck everyone! :)

I'm ready!

I'm in for my 4th Ludum Dare! Will be working with an artist this time. Last time we worked together we got 83rd overall. Aiming for a top 50 this time!

To be able to spend as much time as possible on the game I have prepared food for the whole weekend :p Looking forward to 72 hours of coding! Good luck everyone!

Good luck!

Doing Ludum Dare for the second time now, LD 43 was super fun and I'm sure this one will be too! Good luck everyone! :)

Question about the Compo rules

I'm a bit unsure about this rule:

Everything required to make the source work should be available publicly. If 3rd party libraries and tools are required, free or paid, that’s fine. If you’re using an internal library, to participate in the Compo, you will be required to share it.

I was planning on using my own Unity tool. (this one) For other people that would be fine since it would be a 3rd party thingy, but I guess for me it would be an internal library. It's publicly available, but in the case of an internal library, I'm unsure if that means that it needs to be open source/free or if it's okay that it's paid.

Any thoughts on this?

Group event in the discord

I've noticed the lack of people expressing their disappointment in the final theme by screaming. I am organizing an event where in the discord server. When the theme is announced, all of us join the "General Voice" channel and start expressing our disappointment/excitment as loudly as possible! I just put excitment in there for one dude who might like the theme. But we all know even if you voted for a that theme you will passionately hate it. In case you are not in the discord yet, this is the link https://discord.gg/9DrcQmg Looking forward to hearing all of you scream in there!

Im in

my very first LD ever

In for LD with a risky engine

So I just realized yesterday that LD was this-weekend, and the themes seemed agreeable. The 'Limited Memory' theme in particular.

See, I've been hacking away at a game engine/framework for MS-DOS PCs as a hobby-project. I just got the majority of it done last week and was intending to do a self-imposed 48-hour jam session to test it out. But since Ludum Dare happens to be happening on the same weekend I was planning on doing this, I'm going to give it a shot with my bespoke DOS engine - this is risky, since it isn't entirely "battle tested" yet! But it's as good a test as any.

Why I'm making a DOS Game in 2019

TL;DR - because I felt like it.

The longer explanation comes down to my recent enjoyment of fantasy consoles. I grew up on DOS, my first PC games were Bio Menace, Commander Keen and Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure. I always wanted to make those myself! Early last year, while I was tinkering with PICO-8 a bit, I was thinking that targeting old IBM PCs was very much similar to using a modern Fantasy Console engine, but with the allure of being very "real", if that makes any sense.

I started up development of initial prototypes early in 2018, but spent months rewriting, relearning and revisiting the code until I arrived where I am today: With an engine that supports 320x240, 256 color (5bpp) graphics, palette swapping and cycling, smooth animation, a sound engine and a music engine for synthesized FM music playback.

The code, when it goes up at the end of the jam, should be decently commented: The nuts-and-bolts of the existing framework code is, at least, but I can't speak for the game code I'll write during the jam: Spaghetti is the way of the 48-hour jam.

For distribution I'll be packing in DOSBox for Windows, and will have standalone packages for people who just want to drag-and-drop a folder into their existing DOSBox installation. If I have time post-jam, I'll get it working with the web port of DOSBox and let people try it in their browsers.

Additionally, the source and tools used will be completely available in the source repo. The tools are all either OSS or freeware, and in some cases are made to-purpose for the engine: I'll include source for those too.

List of tools I'll be using

  • DOSBox
  • OpenWatcom C
  • NASM (Netwide Assembler
  • Aseprite (For all artwork, exported to PCX)
  • Reality Adlib Tracker (For music)
  • Audacity, bfxr (For sound effects)
  • Tiled (If needed, for level layouts)
  • VS Code

And with that, I'm going to rest and ready myself for the weekend ahead. Good luck everybody, and have fun!
