LD47 Compo question: Can I use software to generate music?
Can I use software to generate music, sfx, graphics, etc, or must everything literally be manually created?
Can I use software to generate music, sfx, graphics, etc, or must everything literally be manually created?
A game jam is not the best time to think about fancy systems and clean solutions. But you can prepare in advance!
There are certain things almost every game needs. For example a UI system. Most likely than not you will have one in your game. But how to organize it? How to navigate through different panels quickly and cleanly? A while ago I wrote a blog about this, check it out over here: https://www.anton.website/ui-manager

This particular UI Manager solution requires you to wire up some game objects in the inspector window. But what if you forget to assign a field? Coloring unassigned field will make it much easier: https://www.anton.website/colored-inspector-fields

Well, that is great and all, but now you have a console full of debug messages. And if you like me, then that "Clear" always button seems too far away. No worries though, you can clear the console with a shortcut from your keyboard! Check this out: https://www.anton.website/unity-console-clear-shortcut/
Another useful pattern to keep in mind is the object pooling: https://www.anton.website/ui-manager. Keep in mind though, this particular implementation will load all referenced objects to memory as soon as the ResourceManager is referenced. So it is not suitable for huge objects (use addressables for that). But it should work great for an average jam game.
Do you need a generic pop-up window? Maybe you want to implement a tutorial, or show a quick tip? Check out the pop-up window tutorial: https://www.anton.website/pop-up-window. With some modifications, it can even function as a dialog system!

Speaking of dialogs, if you want to localize your game here is a simple localization system I wrote: https://github.com/antonsem/Localization. If you are curious about how I got there, here are the blogs I'm discussing it: https://www.anton.website/a-simple-localization-system/ https://www.anton.website/upgrading-the-localization-system/
Since it is a game jam, you will have plenty of magic numbers and constants. And most likely you will use them multiple times in the code. Hunting for such constants in case you need to change one can be a nightmare! So save yourself some time (and sanity points) by nicely organizing them: https://www.anton.website/quick-tip-for-constants
There are a couple more blogs, but I'm running out of space here! I hope you will find some of these tips useful! Let me know if you have any questions or feedback!

Hello everyone. Just a few words to say that I'm In as usual - and since the 28th Ludumdare session. However, and for the first time, my son will participate with me as a modeler. I am proud about it. He masters Blender amazingly. We will do something as a Jam entry in less than 72 hours. This week-end will be funny - I hope. Below you can see the third guy who manages all the team. So I wish you the best. Have fun ++

Time to tackle my second LudumDare Game Jam (COMPO) this weekend, and I am EXCITED!

TODAY I got confirmation from Apple that they publish my last LD entry "My Little Sunshine" here: https://apple.co/3n5tFYl And it was pretty easy to get published in the Google PlayStore here: https://bit.ly/3ijLPlI My Little Sunshine the mobile game is basically my LD46 game with a nicer looking UI, but I always wanted to have something the app stores and now its there for everyone to download!
And because the last LD Jam was so amazing, I decided to live stream the event with some other people here, just for people to stop by, say "Hi" and see the progress everyone makes. Can't wait for the weekend!

Hi there. First participation here, solo mode.
I will make a game to promote my new game engine : http://squarity.fr . Don't hesitate to try it. You can create and share mini-games online, as long as you know how to code a little in python.
The documentation is French only, but I will try to improve that quickly.

Fetchez la vache !
Unity, Krita, LMMS, & Audacity
Let's go already!
What is hype?
Baby don't hurt me...

Not gonna lie, these very specific themes, that aren't actually themes, but game ideas are still here and I still hate them. Please people. Stop voting for them!
Plop plop everyone 👋
I'm in (using PhaserJS and TypeScript).
Maybe I'll produce something this time. 🙃
First Ludum Dare, second jam ever. Wasn't able to successfully complete the first one, but I've learned a lot since then.
Rocking LD solo with the following tools:
If you are participating in Ludum Dare and you are a charitable and formidable person who has voted on the themes you can use this poll to tell the world (and help your fellow LDers in the process): https://strawpoll.com/fkkokk8fg
Also share this poll with whoever you can :)
Good luck to everyone! May the theme not be trash!
We'll be using Crafty.js as the game framework. It's an older Javascript framework and hasn't been maintained for over a year now. But it's a great prototyping tool because it is really consistent API.

This will be my first time participating (solo dev) and I'm super nervous but excited to try it out and participate!
Going to be doing something for the Web using Typescript and some other Javascript libs.
Let's do this!
This is my first time participating... I'm super nervous but at the same time super excited... I have basic knowledge of Unity so that's what I will be using... Let's do this!!
This one snuck up one me, I almost forgot about it. I missed the previous Ludum Dare, so this will be my first one. Its been about 7 months since. Have fun with the jam.
My Tools:
Game Engine: Unity
Art: Jpixel and/or Krita
Music: BoscaCeoil
SFX: sfxr
I am very excited to participate this weekend! I haven't competed in an LD jam for several years (under a different name), but I'm happy to be back! I've been working on a small game engine suitable for little 2D games and I can't wait to put it to the test! I see a lot of people posting the tools they'll be using for the competition, so I will list mine below:
Did I miss anything? Am I breaking any rules with these? Guess we'll find out :) I also wanted to include a picture of my setup as I've seen a few of those as well.

Good luck everybody!
