Ludum Dare 47 October 2–5, 2020

It's ya boi pie comin' in to LD47!

Alright let's get poppin' let's make a game, aight?

The tools are: - Rust - Bevy - Emacs - Krita - Blender - Coffee machine - My home bar - Fridge - Lieferando - Durstexpress

Let's make a decent game for the first time in pie's history of Ludum Dare, das a goal!

Community Servers

I created a game for a LD Jam 2 years ago (NodeJS backend with socket.io HTML5/Canvas). You could play in the browser against other people. I just realized I am still paying for the Amazon instance and the page actually still loads and the chat still works as well as the zoom in and out feature but I cannot control the ship. Also I have not done the Lets Encrypt process so my SSL cert is expired.

Anyways, continuing the theme of making it have multiplayer support, I will be creating my submission this year with LibGDX, Box2D and Kryonet. I will probably only make ports for Desktops, but maybe I will try to make an HTML version and host a server again.

The big difference is that I want people to be able to host the server themselves and play alone or join other people's servers (kind of like the Minecraft model).

Some of the themes I think will work quite well for this. Let's see if I can defeat the sleep monsters and get something playable completed.

Edit: I just spent a few hours remembering how to get Let's Encrypt working: https://worldy.io/

System Programmer joining Ludum Dare, The Adventures

Good evening everyone!

This will be my first time joining the Ludum Dare game Jam. I'm very excited to go head-first into this new adventure. Although I have some experience creating games, I actually never finished one and I like the process of designing the engine more. This weekend will be the first time I design a game from scratch.

I won't use an engine, just javascript (yes, javascript.. I don't like that language at all, but it is flexible enough for me to feel comfortable). It was recommended to create some sort of browsergame, and I like to have control over every pixel. I'll also use a combination of PHP and a MySQL database to make some sort of interaction between players possible. It won't store any personal or sensitive information, just an alias at most. The plan behind is not defined yet, I just like interactivity to play a role in the upcomming game.

Maybe you think I'm crazy not using any kind of engine, but as a low-level system-programmer I'm somehow used to it, and I like to have control over every aspect of the game.

The thing I am most nervous about is the fact that the theme will be revealed saturday at 00:00AM here in the Netherlands. I'm not the most productive late at night (which is funny because programmers are known of their productiveness in the middle of the night). I'll just look at the theme, will spend an hour brainstorming some ideas and then I'll take a good night rest to start at 07:30AM in the morning.

You can follow my progress here on the Ludum Dare website, or on my website: http://wouter52.com/?page=ld47

Oh Boy here we go again

I have acumulated some experience in art in these months so I'm gonna try again to finnish a game by myself :'v

LETS FREAKING DO THIS!!!!

Going solo again!

For my first LD, I participated as a solo dev. This time, I have a lot more friends who went to college with me. Unfortunately, between full-time jobs and existing commitments and grad school, none of them were free this weekend. It's a shame, because it's always fun to work with friends, but on the other hand it's also thrilling to show what I can do with my own skills. Lately, I've been working on a big existing project that I was brought into after a lot of it was already done. It's been a while since the last time I made something that was just mine, and I can't wait to see what I'm able to achieve under my own power and nothing else. Here's hoping it all goes well for me!

The game of my LD Jam: Luke Inn

Hey guys, I am here to show you one of the games I started thanks to the Ludum Dare and I am keeping improving him! This was from Ludum Dare 45: Start with nothing!

LD47!!

We are going to give this a try! Have fun everyone!

We're using: - Löve2D - VS Code - Paint.net - Ableton Live 10 Lite - OpenOffice - Bfxr

Here's to all creators!

This will be my first jam and game. Best of luck, folks! I'll try to cook something fun using Rust. There is nothing better than gamedev to master programming. I can't wait for cool games and challenges. Thank you to the organizers and the community for this occasion. I drink to you Comrades!

I'm Probably In, Again

It happened again. I'm just straight-chillin' when suddenly one of my dev friends asks if I'm gonna be participating in the next LD and oh shoot it's less than two days away.

Barring any horrible disasters or being too busy with/sidetracked by other things, I plan to participate in the LD47 compo. I don't have any interesting backup plans if we get a bad theme, though, so it's possible I will be bailing out because the theme was a major nope - it happens, and I'll put the time to good use working on one of the other ten bajillion projects I've got in the works.

Toolset of choice

  • Still on XUbuntu 16.04 (Windows support remains optional :sunglasses:)
  • Unity 2018.2.???????? (the new versioning system still remains bullhonk, y'all)
  • VSCodium for writing code (version 1.33.1 from apt-get)
  • Blender (2.78, custom-rolled)
  • GIMP 2.8 (2.8.16, as provided by apt-get)
  • Audacity (2.12, as provided by apt-get)
  • Caustic 3 (running in a 32-bit wineprefix with WINE-5.8-staging)
  • itch.io & its butler toolchain for distribution

My take on GMTK 2020

Warm up!

The idea I came up with for GMTK 2020 (although I wasn't motivated enough to participate back then) is now coming to life...

I'm in!

A family emergency kept me from finishing my last project, hoping everything goes smoothly this time as I aim for something short and sweet.

Tools:

Unity Photoshop Blender

Awesome tool list released

A couple of days ago i started asking you guys for tools that you are going to use and looked at the blog posts made to get as much free (or at least "try as long as you want") tools as possible.

2020-10-01 02em43/em38-Awesome Game Jam _ This is a curated list that contains helpful links and resour.png

Boy, oh boy, was i surprised with the results! There were some tools that just blew me away and i can't wait to use them! I created an open source project to allow for everyone to contribute tools if they think there is something missing or if they created tools themselves and want them to be featured. As long as the tools are somewhat free and helpful, i will put them on that list.

Thanks to everyone responding to my questions and thanks for all your blog posts that helped me help myself and hopefully you!

Final Round - here we go

final.png

Decay

Decay has been in the final Round a few times now and I still really like it. It can inspire both mechanics as well as setting/story/content and describes an aesthetic style, that at times really resonates with me.

Layers

Layers is a tad too broad, even for me. I can still see a bunch of really great games that revolve around some interpretation of 'layers', but it doesn't really inspire me personally, so this is a neutral vote from me.

Control the world, not the player

While such a mechanic can be fun it's much too specific for a jam theme imo.

Nomad

I actually really like this theme and think there are great things that could be done with it, however... I fear if this ends up becoming the theme in the end we'll end up with a slew of culturally insensitive games and that makes me rather warry, so only neutral on this from me.

Connections

Not super inspiring and pretty broad. I ended up giving it a + because it can refer to social connections, physical connections, abstract connections etc.

Stuck in a loop

Great hook for a game, even if it's not terribly original. Do I want to playtest through 60 variants of that game? Meh...

Feeding the monster

Kind of neutral on this one. It's a theme, it doesn't dictate mechanics or setting (even if it suggests something fantasyesque it can quite readily be takin into different directions), so that's all great, but I'm just not really feeling it.

Delay the inevitable

This just sounds like playtesting would be SOOO stressful... no thanks.

Contain it

Feels overdone and uninspired. I'm sure there would come a few really good games out of this, but nope... not interested.

Day and night

Really broad again, but it allows for a lot of different times of games that tie into it either mechanically or aesthetically. Was torn between neutral and plus here.

* Shipwrecked*

So plussing this is a bit of a copout, because to be quite honest it is way to specific for what I usually consider a good theme. Buuuut I really like that setting so I upvoted it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Clockwork

Nice theme. Allows for Setting, mechanical, audio, etc interpretations. Thumbs up.

You can't save them all

Not bad as a story theme, but it would probably be interpreted by most as a mechanic and as such it's too specific.

Death is not the end

Between minus and neutral. Potentially boring as a mechanic, slightly less so as a story theme I guess. But that's also way overdone so.. Meh.

Summoning

Can be a mechanic or a story/setting thing I guess? Not terribly inspiring thought.

the world changes when you are not looking

This can be a fun mechanic in games. This usually shouldn't be the core mechanic imo and going into a game knowing that it will feature this gimmick kinda takes away from the appeal it would have for me. So nope.

Overall, and in spite of the few upvotes I gave out, I feel that this is a pretty solid selection when compared to previous jams and I'm hyped to see what the theme will end up being =]

Welcome to Ludum Dare 47 - PS: We start early!

Are we still social distancing? Sounds like a good excuse to Ludum Dare!

Keynote, hosted by Snowdrama (@snowdrama)

Keynoting our 47th event is Snowdrama (twitter). He's a veteran whose participated in numerous events, and he even decided to make a keynote with branching paths! What! I'm still exploring them as I write this. Check it out:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJNnETTeFVM

I owe a huge thanks to Snowdrama for pulling this together! Due to some complications, I wasn't able to give him much more than a weekend's notice to write, shoot, and edit this. Timeline aside, I think he did great. Thanks again!

That's it for now. It's time for the final vote!

Some Great Themes This Time!

Screenshot 2020-09-30 183105.png Loving some of the themes this time. A couple that are just alright but could still produce some interesting results. And of course, a couple that I kinda hate. Well, let's see what we end up with! Have a great jam everybody!

Some thoughts about the base-code

basecode.png

I've been contemplating this particular tidbit in the COMPO-Rules, and browsing old discussions about the subject.

( Here's a thread from 2 years ago, and a more recent discussion from yesterday.)

I find that a lot of the time it's quite ambiguous how extensive base-code you're allowed to use.

The reason I'm bringing this up, is that a week ago I produced a little physics/platformer-test as a warm-up project, and yesterday I developed it a bit further.

PhysicsTest1c.gif

I'm planning to possibly use some parts of it as base-code in the COMPO.

(Specifically a text-prompter and some physics-behaviours)

I thought I'd share it outright just in case.

It's a .MFA-document (Clickteam Fusion), but I also included a playable .EXE and a browser-build on itch.io if someone without the development-software wants to give it a spin.

There's also a crude screenshot of the code included.

pic.png

The Password is : uddermaul47  :key:

Would I be eligible to participate in the COMPO with some of the code as a starting point, given I highlight the parts I started out with in my submission?

(After going through the earlier discussions about this subject, I'm pretty sure I'm good to go. But thought I'd still ask just to be sure!)

And obviously I wouldn't be using any sound/graphical assets, level-design etc. that are included in this "DEMO".

Aaaand here's a mandatory list of some of the tools I usually utilize:

OS: Ubuntu-Studio 18.04

Programming: Clickteam Fusion 2.5 (Using WINE !)

Graphics: GIMP, guvcview, ffmpeg, ImageMagick, Kdenlive, Toonloop

Audio: Audacity, sfxr, amsynth, Qsynth, Qtractor, CALF - Studio Gear, SooperLooper, Loopify

Cheers!
