Ludum Dare 47 October 2–5, 2020

We started today!

Worked a and had a lot of fun. We will soon show some art of our game to you guys <3

Maze Generation is in!!

It only took 2.5 hours, and I've already got a working maze generation algorithm! I looked at some tutorials, and it seemed like the best method for me would be iterative Hunt and Kill (recursive is probably better but I don't really remember how those work!). I mainly looked at tutorials to get the general "this is how it works" and then wrote the actual logic almost all myself. Basically, it takes a cell, checks its neighbors, and moves to an open neighbor. If there are none, it goes back to find the most recent cell with open neighbors until there are none left. Then I just pick a random square in the last row and remove a wall to make it the exit! I'm really proud of how it's turned out, especially with how fast it was to make! I expected it'd take all day! Maybe... procedural generation isn't that bad?

This took way longer then I thought it would. derpbot-lessderp.gif 4h7s8u.jpg

Meet Tina and Lina--Theme Park Bloggers

Meet Tina and Lina. Two rival theme park bloggers covering a much anticipated new amusement park ride, when it goes haywire, and they become stuck as it loops around and around!

First day done!

Got some basic gameplay going! I tried to come up with something unique but ran out of creative juice :/

Almost There!

Screen Shot 2020-10-03 at 19.22.05.png

I've done 10 hours of work this is where I've gone so far for my first game jam🤪

i'm going to go to bed and wake up in the morning to finish it up!

WE'RE GOING ON!

imageem2020-10-03/em19-13-28.png

We're working so hard!! I think I'm going to die haha, but we can't give up!!

I'm so happy of the results till now, but still, hope we will manage to get in it all of the elements!!

Too slow :S

Wish we've had all the time to complete a game this LD, but due to work limitations this year we only had one day :(

Most of it was spent on the dungeon generator, and we spent additional two hours for texturing and designing the levels. That's what we have. Currently no gameplay, but at least the environment looks kind of good XD

Capture.PNG

Quite literally, stuck in a loop

ezgif.com-video-to-gif.gif

Need to add Blender3D to my stack, was not expecting to make a 3D game this time around, but I couldn't think of a good way to incorporate the theme without it.

Swimming among the stars

I'm back at it after some sleep, now with jumps, but nothing to jump on except empty space. swim.gif

I am making good progress

I am making very good progress. The set dressing is done and the level works for now. The character can interact with some of the objects now and I have some camera animations happening to hight light a certain object. I am currently, just for testing, using Adventure Creator's Tin Pot character. He will be replaced tommorow. I still got a lot of work to do. Progressem21.jpg Scene view in Unity Progress/em22.jpg And this is what it looks like in game.

Ludum Dare 47 Progress #2

In the words of that one guy: aw yeah. It's all coming together.

templeshot3.jpg

Besides quite a nice desktop background, I've also made some progress on the actual game mechanics. I'm not sure exactly how much I'll have time to implement, so I won't go into too much detail here, but like last time, I'm focusing more on style rather than substance.

Our progress so far

Bouteille has done wonderful things with the code, most of the needed thing works. Me, I have to say that I'm quite "stuck" and I can't find a way to create an engaging scenario. Well, we have some time left so I don't worry (at least, for the moment).

What does this means? It means that our brains need food!

repas2.JPG

Ok, I won't copy paste Bouteille's code here, but I can show you a mockup of the dialog UI:

mockup1.jpg

It's time for me to prepare some coffee.

Hope you're all enjoying the event, and you don't struggle too much with your game!

Progress cca 12 hours in

My game called "Unscripted" is getting its shape. I hope I will manage to code everything tomorrow!

It is a traditional point and click adventure game with (hopefully) interesting story.

Slaloms??!!

ezgif.com-gif-maker (5).gif

Currently, you cannot hold down the button to glide across multiple lanes, I like that you cant do that as it makes the game more of a challenge to have to spam the button to move quickly, whats your thoughts?

Sloooow progress

So @sindri and I are jamming together this time. But it's been rough going! I am in the middle of a move and haven't been available for all that long. Also, Sindri is west coast USA and I'm east coast, so that makes it a bit more difficult, too!

Either way, I got a little bit of progress.

First day report

ld47_1.png

Plot: Save the uninfetcted from the never ending loop of undead.

I'm a new Godot user so there has been a lot to learn. But it has been fun and it works very well for me. I hope I have more energy left for tomorrow.

My first day progress

All basic game mechanics and graphics are done. Honestly, I thought it would take a lot more time :p

Falling into the end of the first day

Falling into certain death. Need to grab those juicy powers to fling yourself up with the power of something! Touching the baddies will reduce your collected power, dare go further down to gain more goddies!

You must go out of the loop to be able to break free from it. Try the alpha-alpha here: http://andreasohlin.se/gamedev/LD47/

A bit more progress today

First time using MagicaVoxel for Ludum Dare. Exciting!

Roguelike with tanks?

Haha, that Cart is Tokyo Drifting...

We weren't really sure what to make based on this theme. So we've just taken the "loop" theme as literally as we possibly can and are making a rather silly on-rails shooter that's in a loop.

I can almost hear the eurobeat playing when I watch this gif back from my Twitch stream earlier today (https://www.twitch.tv/rubynovadev). I think our MVP is also pretty much there too! Tomorrow will mostly be polishing work I reckon!

Day 1 Progress

https://youtu.be/ObslwcmrmOM

With only 3 hours remaining in the First 24, I have a pretty solid look and feel going and have implemented the main mechanic of switching color spaces!

Now on to some prototype level design, as that is where the stuck in a loop portion will come into play. Thinking you'll have to carry certain colored lights to the right locations other wise the exit portals will take you right back to the start of the level. We'll see what comes of it!

Today's progress of our team!

Yes, it finally works! Really glad to see this...

The space sim loop is coming along! :)

ld.png

Today's progress

The progress of the first day. Still a lot to do, for one a bit of optimization and some bug fixes. Still need to implement the main idea of the game which is adding colour to the world bit by bit when finding specific objects in the world.

But for a proof of concept and first prototype it is looking very promising!

Good luck everyone on the remaining days :v:

I basically uploaded this earlier but I am almost satisfied with the visual polish now. Particles need a bit of work still but I'm really happy otherwise.

Some Limited Progress

We now have some bouncing balls and a rope that can wrap round stuff

Pause/resume

IMGem20201003/em210620.jpg

Just a few minutes to eat some sushi and I continue my project. Don't forget to eat, drink and sleep 😁😁😁

C64 - Looper

Progressing pretty nicely. Levels can now be built easily, the wagon is moving along, collection diamonds. The player can override crossings and there can be enemy trolleys (not shown in GIF)

Yay, tomorrow more polish, sound effects (I suck at SID, so it'll be ugly) and hopefully a nice game emerges :)

LOOP

We created a basic engine for our entry. Still needs some work on the node-engine, by the way... Now it's time for the story, 001.png

Here is what we have so far for the Jam

Mockup.jpg Stuck in a loop of a moody defect robot, that keeps resetting time when you fail. We are still working on graphics and function implementation.

Day 1 so far

So, I’ve mostly just been trying my best to create a 3d game, having never created a 3d game before with Godot. It’s going about as expected; tons of fighting with trying to 3d model and program all at the same time, but I’m weirdly okay with it so far. I don’t think I’ll be winning anything but it’s proving fun if nothing else!31C56F00-D818-4862-B4C8-AED03D678671.jpeg

Opening a door...

kiwi-progress1.gif

Pretty happy so far.

First day progress

gif.gif It's still very rough and we have to get the story to fit correctly to the theme, but progress is being made!

New pic and update of progress day1

escaep thje loop.png

Day 1

So I managed to make some half decent progress - got a prototype level in, an enemy with some movement and some basic scripts - still running into lots of random collision issues which are causing headaches though and slowing me down a bit.

Modifed the game mechanics a bit - I think now I will focus on the loop concept in two ways

  • 1 the scene loops if the timer runs out (bit basic but I guess it counts)
  • 2 the enemy default movement is moving around in a loop - be interesting to see what I can do and how I can tweak it once I get a few enemies in the game and with a fully working script and hopefully some basic follow player AI

wip enemy.png

I'm changing the title to escape the loops too - the enemies are the 'loops' in this case

I'm live streaming as I develop on Twitch btw if you want to watch it's progress https://www.twitch.tv/noirvortex

Another GIF!

I decided it would be fun to share another GIF of my game. Here's one of the newer levels: LD47 Progress GIF 2 So far my level design has followed two general patterns: one is levels, like this one, that aren't too hard once you understand the mechanics, but give you a satisfying result. The other category of levels do require a little bit of thinking, and I think most of them are pretty good too.

Update Compo day 1 #3

And... that's it for the first day for me !

I made and finished 2 minigames of the collection (of which you can get a preview on the game's page) and started the 3rd and final one. Tomorrow is going to be more asset creation.

Good night to everyone, take care of yourselves ^^

Screenshot1.png

Woah!

This training sure is intense. Don't worry, though- those spikes aren't really sharp at all... although they would certainly knock you out of the loop!

I was able to get 'level generation' working! I will be able to create tons of 'level slices' that will be stitched together, sort of like 'Spelunky.' Is this a Rougelite? Haha... Probably not.

coolEh.gif

Let There Be Light!

Screenshot.png

Meh. It isn't a lot of progress for the first day, but it's getting there. The idea was a sort of survival horror game where you have to fix an alien-infested ship and escape orbit (the loop), but none of the core mechanics are actually working yet. Oh well.

yoyo

vid.gif

Cursed Hula Loop

Well, after thinking and sketching it outthe whole day and not coming up with anything worth doing I've decided just to go on with heroine, as usual. Now heroine is ready but I am still not sure if I'll come out with anything I can put her in.

mhidle.gif

Progress so far

Our game is starting to take shape, main mechanics are completely working.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_QlAFJ9T04

I am in

Started 15 hours late, but finally have the basic concept working. The water evaporating from a lake, forming clouds and raining down on earth. Just need to add the last step to close the loop - the player to transfer the water back into the lake before it dries out. If I have time, I may even redraw the ugly-ass graphics. But that's the plan for tomorrow.

ezgif.com-gif-maker (1).gif

Now it's getting a bit creepy

It now follows you, progress is going allot smoother than anticipated. Hope its a short game everyone will enjoy! Peek.gif

what was i thinking?

i tought up a idea that was so simplystic, basic and generic that i feel like its gonna fail, well to late to go back now! so i gotta push forward with the generic idea

New project

Damn, it's almost end of the 1st day and I only created new project recently. Lets hope that next day will be bit more productive. Also I have to admit that some of your games are already looking good. Keep up the good work guys.

Doing good

Making some good progress so far. If you wanna come hang out, I'm streaming the whole jam on Twitch!

The Sun Wants a Hug!

After a brief (less than an hour!) discussion about where we would be heading with this theme, I am happy to say that progress on this Dare's game is going quite smoothly! It's definitely going better than expected (not that anyone expected 'Stuck in a Loop') and we are excited to see the end result!

a3KeOLd - Imgur.gif

Moving slowly with LD47

Had very little time and probably tomorrow even less. But created base for game. Now I need to polish road a lot to make it smooth ride. How are you going to escape from this loop with car ? carLoop.gif

After tribulation, my game is back on track

My save file got corrupted as I was beginning working on the second (of three) phase of my game. I was able to salvage the raw files and put the project back together. Now I've almost finished the second phase and will begin working on the third phase tomorrow as well as adding a main menu, some music and sfx and a score counter. If I can, I'll add a conclusion (read my earlier post if you wanna know more about the general idea)

They're... Evolving!!

It's the circle of life, but YOU decide who will reproduce.

running-creature-wtf.gif

Day 1 is done...

So this day didn't go that bad. I technically still don't have any gameplay but there were alot managers and systems that needed to be in place first. I created animations and a little exit animation. I am still using Tin Pot for now but he will be replaced. See ya'll tommorow. Progress_34.gif

Hamster theme continues!

I've previously been a part of a game jam team where we made a game where the idea was to obliterate evil sci-fi hamsters.

Now the tables have turned! (Or could this be a prequel?) Anyway: the Hamster has broken out of the Wheel, but finds itself in another grind.

As the Hamster, you'll be obliterating... enemies. It will be messy, as the world is a dire place.

screenshot-01.PNG This is the badass Hamster.

It seems that this game jam will mainly be a learning and tutorial following experience, since I'm working on this game alone. I hope to get something playable, but my schedule is nifty due to renovating in our new apartment.

"Loop Ware" day 1 progress

I struggled a bit to think of something that would fit the theme at first. But I've recently been wanting to make a Wario Ware-like game, so I decided to make one with minigames themed around loops, circles, wheels, turning, spinning etc.

wip3.PNG

So far I have the main systems in place such as the core loop, health and 3 minigames. Two of the minigames are kinda similar, but different enough. Just like in Wario Ware the minigames have 3 different difficulties/variations. So even though I only have 3 different minigames, I technically have 9. The game currently speeds up by 10% after every minigame, but I'm planning on making it speed up about every five or so. I have ideas for 3 more minigames, and possibly a boss fight where you "break the loop"

The artstyle I settled on was 2D with sprites that are rendered from 3D models, as I find it much easier than both pixel art and trying to get good looking 3D environments in Unity. I'm pretty happy with how it looks.

wip1.PNG wip2.PNG

You can watch me play through what I have so far here:

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/759769654

And if you wanna keep up with my progress tomorrow, why not follow me on Twitch as I am streaming the entirety of this games development.

wip4.PNG That's a good trick

Progress after one day

You are a train driver who has to pick up people from train stations while defending yourself from a Zombie Apocalypse test.gif

Science! (kinda)

I got pretty high result in "theme" category last two times. Don't have as good idea now of how to approach the theme ins not-beaten-to-death way. So, I have decided to make a puzzle about particles.

Screen1.png

Some of levels will indeed be about making particles loop around each others, but probably, it will not be THE main theme of the levels.

Watch us go live on Twitch!

All done the first environment pass :) It turned out to be much brighter than the concept art, but I think that's fine.

Now to model the instruments, and characters! I hope tonight to have them all done, and have started on rigging.

Extend your loop

I'm making some progress ! The tracks can be extended to help the train to reach new resources train_tracks.gif
