Ludum Dare 47 October 2–5, 2020

ALL DONE

What a fun weekend! Thanks to everyone who came and hung out during the jam! :)

Unity Particle System Question

Unity's particle system comes with some default textures, such as a white circle with a gradient. Would these particles textures be legal for the jam or should I make my own?

BUSHIDO is almost done!

We decided to go for looping 2D jump and run levels where you have to complete a loop in a given time. The really nice thing about this is that even the enemies and all objects get looped and even their state. That means if you kill enemies in your first round you will be faster and by that gain more points because you get a multiplier that is based on your velocity.

But what if I don't know the answer!?!

Oh...

This jam was awesome! The number of systems I was able to cram into my game surprised myself. Don't worry, I wrote enough spaghetti for everyone to enjoy. Can't wait to try your games!

And if you want, you can play Tip of My Tongue in-browser!

Under The Moon

Mission Accomplished

This Ludum Dare I set the goal to do the COMPO (Solo, 48h) and actually finish it! And I did it!

One thing I am super proud is the art of the game.

Yes, you heard me. Just had my friend record a bunch of audio for one of the spectator girls that will watch you do gnarly moves on lily pads and possibly fall deeply in love with you.

Synth loops away!

Rounding into Sunday night (haa. haha. ha.) and we still don't have a name for our glom-up arcade game. We also have three art styles because I have a problem. Anyway, here's a mockup of our synthwave level: GlomgifSunday.gif

Happy jamming! Congrats to the finished Compo devs!

Looping Condor 3000 is ready for judging!

I've never gone this hard on a Ludum Dare before. I feel like I just ran with the bulls. But my compo submission is live as of a few hours ago. I firmly believe it to be my best effort in a game jam thus far, so be sure to give it a play.

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/looping-condor-3000

I can't wait to play all of your games. I will definitely be livestreaming my judging experience, hopefully starting tomorrow. Follow me on Twitch at twitch.tv/quinn_patrick to see when I go live.

More progress on our ghost racer thingy

Yeah we still have no name for this concept, but we're having a blast messing about with it!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHSeAfgmktY

please forgive the terrible compression :(

The idea is to avoid hitting your "ghosts" which follow you in a loop that you create. Each lap you complete, a new ghost is spawned. We've tweaked the speed of the car and it increments with each lap. The game is remarkably playable now and really tricky! Driving in a tube is really difficult, especially when trying to avoid where you've driven before!

This time we've got: A new menu New map tiles An end condition An end screen Nice UI and speed counter Difficulty increase Cool effects on the car for visibility improvements Loads of hidden stuff that nobody will ever see but makes us happy.

What we still need to do: A lot...

Guess I Skipped the Compo. But Hello, Jam.

I was planning to participate in Compo, but because I was still recovering from my illness. I guess I shouldn't push myself too hard this time. Maybe next Compo.

As for the theme "Stuck in a Loop", took over one day to decide what kind of game I would make since I added an additional personal restriction. It is that the game must be expandable in the future. So the game is not just one usage only for this jam only, but can be added more contents and more values in the future outside the jam especially the prize of the jam is the game product itself.

The interesting part of this theme that I already made several games with such theme in the past. They are Runny Square and Looping Zip. I guess I made them several years too early?

As the game for this theme and jam, instead of making the word "Stuck" into a problem. I turned it into an opportunity, the game mechanism. So I am currently making a game about a rabbit which must heal heart by shooting heart to the broken heart. Only that, the bunny keep moving following the path. Also, if player shoots the heart twice, the heart will break again. AAAAA by NeithR-20201005.gif

Hope I can finish it this time at least in the Jam.

Loop Back to the Future

Loop Back to the Future is my Compo submission for LD47!

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/loop-back-to-the-future

race.gif

race2.gif

Even though the core mechanics were pratically done by day 1, I still wasn't able to finish everything I could, like Intro Menu, Tutorial and Music.

I still think it was a very solid submission and a pretty fun concept. I also learned the basics of making Fire and Electricity VFX and I'm very very proud of results.

The tools I used for this game were:

  • Unity
  • Paint.net
  • Audacity
  • Vfxr

Everything but audio is done!

Added a slider for setting the loop time and made a lil system for scoring based on how long the loop is and how many times you die.

Now it's just giving my game the blessing of sound.GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG.gif

The Loop

It's got its bugs and no audio, menu, or build. but we had fun lol

TheLoop.gif

I'm done.

I'm done with making my game. More than technologically, it was mentally draining to make this, but hey, it's done! You can try it out here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/used-to-it

Screenshot 2020-10-05 075033.png

Ride 'em.... umm... cowfrog?

End of day 2 and we have a basic level system and exit condition... Hopefully a few more elements to interact with tomorrow, then... I guess... level design, sound, menus, HUD... then, sleep??

2020-10-05 0350.gif

Eat, s#!&, and power on through

I'm back from a break. Our game seems to have a working title. Welcome to...

Pillars of Anguish

You were running to catch a train, and you don't remember what happened next. You have no idea where you've just found yourself, but you probably need to get out. Don't worry, I got you. We'll make it out of this maze together. That is, if you're willing to sacrifice a bit of your patience and sanity...

Level design is progressing at full steam. Still need to tweak and polish some bits, add some sound, text, and stuff like that, but generally, the spot we're in is not terrible.

Abstract Local Multiplayer Competitive Strategy Game! Playable in Browser!

Cover.png

Woodstone_02 is a local multiplayer competitive strategy game where you strive to control the board and deliver devastating blows to your opponent!

As this is a local multiplayer game, players will have to pass the mouse back and forth based on whose turn it is. Also, the tutorial is on the itch page, not in the game itself.

How do I submit

How do I submit, I need quick answers!!!

I'm done!

My Jam entry, A Good Way to Die, is finished and uploaded. Unfortunately I haven't left myself enough time today to do a lot of playing and rating of other games, but I'll be picking them up tomorrow.

You can play (and rate) my entry here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/a-good-way-to-die

Pain and Suffering. The jam experience so far.

spent around 30 mins frustratingly wondering why the button for a dialogue scene would not work. It me a while, but I completely forgot about the Event System. So far so (not so much) good.Screenshot (8).png

Game done, polish and play test.

The game is done, but I have a bug in my weather system that I need to sort out. The game have a real deep story but it is worth it. Progress_6.jpg

Finally finished our game!

After working on it non-stop this weekend we got to the point where we feel that we have created the game we set out to make. This being our second entry in the Ludum Dare we are interested in any and all feedback that you might have on our game. We would also love to see and play what kind of games you have made for this theme! Here is the link to our game https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/dont-shoot-yourself

pic1.png

Function complete!!

The game is mechanically done!! Including the boss battle I procrastinated on so much! The combat is done, the conversation is done, the maze is done, the items are done - it's a full playable game! Which means I can go to bed before 3am tonight! Of course, I'm far from actually done!

Polishing

  • Story - right now, the game doesn't have any context! What's keeping you respawning? And what's going on at all, anyway? First on the list of polishes is adding in that info. Just a brief summary of "Hey, you're Theseus, there's this whole big deal with King Minos of Crete and the Minotaur and all that" and then "Because you're an Athenian prince, Athena herself has blessed you and you won't die here"
  • Models/animations - Robot Kyle is doing his best, but he's not the best choice for Princess Ariadne. Once I have a proper model with an idle animation in for him - and ideally one for Theseus too, even if it's a 1st-person game. I'd also like a generic guard to stick next to the Labyrinth entrance to give a bit more exposition - basically just "We're giving you a candle, when it goes out the Minotaur will get you lol"
  • Audio - music and SFX will really add to the atmosphere. At the very least, BGM, and the Minotaur has to roar threateningly
  • Materials - I'm not sure if I should rank this above audio or not. Do I want an ugly game that has sound, or a mediocre-looking one that's silent? In a perfect world I'd have them both, but I want to make sure I at least have one. Anyway, decent textures on the walls and floor, plus adding in ceilings and lighting, will make just such a big difference
  • Menus - right now the main menu and the win screen are both just blank white screens with some plain black text on them, which is bad! I'd like them to look nice! And it would also be nice if I could add some extra stuff, like showing the player how many times they died on the win screen and putting credits on the main screen
  • Custom shaders and VFX - I genuinely love working with shader graph, and it's been a while since I've been able to make a shader. Plus, I've been dying to try out the VFX graph since I found out it was a thing. I highly highly doubt I'll have enough time for this, but at the very least I have to add at least one particle effect. I can't remember the last time I made a game without one!

At What Cost? Is done!

We had a lot fun for our first LD jam!. Play as a robot (or robots?) just trying to get home to sleep.

Keep on trucking everyone!

I've finally made my first complete game !

Eventhought my game is really really bad , i'm happy that I have finally made a complete game . I would love your feedback as i feel that especially for a beginner like me , feedback can be EXTREMELY crutial so that I can become a better game dev in the future . Thanks for reading this !

Loved it!

I've got to go back to school today, but I loved the experience!

This is what I made:

https://youtu.be/_US6IRv9ylg

Project-L.O.O.P is a game of strategy, skill, and practice. You were on the new L.O.O.P crew, a crew that would man the first time-travelling spaceship. Except - it went wrong.

You wake up on the ship. The rest of the crew dead, and the Time Warp Drive damaged. The Time Warp Drive will try and take you back in time every 60 seconds, unless you manually reset it. You have to repair the ship (by completing objectives), whilst making sure you never let the Time Warp Drive reach 0.

Whew, Crystal Racer is done!

Had soo much fun this time. We decided to try a new way of working on a jam game so we went with VS Code Live Share, where we code into the same files on the same computer at the same time. One can see in real time what the other one is writing and changes are immediate.

Had very little trouble with it, as we had agreed on how to edit the game beforehand (always try to edit in a way that doesn't explode the whole project).

Also we managed to think of a small enough scope for the game, so we had time to polish on the second day. I hope you enjoy our jam game!

QUESTION TO VETERANS

Hi! Im 14 and this was my first Ludum Dare. I just wanted to ask, how exactly is karma calculated? When i rate a game, is all i need to do play, select number of stars for the category, leave a comment, and like any comments that i think are good?

P.S, my game is called Project Loop, which you can find here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/project-l-o-o-p

Thanks in advance!

Dev Log #5 - Just Fix IT

Calling it for this jam.

Too many things got in the way of this jam. The biggest being unable to find the motivation to power through coding all weekend.

Good luck to those still in it.

Submitted my compo game BLOBIUS!

%pnem05-10-20/em14-09-08.gif

It's a game about being stuck to an ever-morphing loop that you can flip in and out of!

Hope you guys enjoy it! :)

Running out of time.

Hi there!

Some friends and I are trying to make a kind of visual novel and point&click game using Unity. We have very good art, but the code is a complete a nightmare.

We don't have to much about the game to share yet. For now, some of the art:

Our main character: protagonista_sonrisa.png

A background: Bar.png

We don't have a lot of time left, we will try our best to complete it in time. GL everyone!

Gravity Blade is coming along!

@sindri and I have been crunching along with our Jam entry, called Gravity Blade.

Gravity-Blade-logotype-ld.jpg

We've both pretty big shmup fans, so we decided to do a shmup for this jam. We have a lot of influences for the idea, and we decided to take a (hopefully!) creative approach to the theme.

Stuck in a Loop refers to the ship's capability to capture enemies and force them into a tight gravity loop within the ship itself. Capturing enough enemies will power up your main weapon, but you can also charge up and unleash a powerful debris attack with the remains of the enemy if you want!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxf0ITSqd4A

It's not quite ready for release, as it still misses a few features, but we're both really enjoying participating in this Ludum Dare!

I have now learned something new through ludumdare -> Game testers

Game testers are very important. I had tested the game with my mouse setting. But I'm used to having my pointer sensitivity set very high. When I gave it to my wife to test it, she was a bit overwhelmed with the camera. If I had more time I would have included a slider for the rotation speed.

Another question to veterans...

Hi! Im 14 and this was my first Ludum Dare. I asked a question earlier, which was kindly answered by @conv (thanks ;)), just wanted to ask something else - how exactly are classic balance and smart balance calculated?

P.S, my game is called Project Loop, which you can find here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/project-l-o-o-p

Thanks in advance!

Interested on Code Review of your Unity / C# project?

Last Ludum Dare, I did some Let's Play of some games and uploaded it on youtube. This time I thought about doing Let's Review Code instead. In my job as a software developer, I have to do code reviews almost daily. But my code gets also reviewed when I have created a feature or fixed a bug. I consider code reviews as one of the most important lessons to become a better coder.

Maybe you don't work as a software developer professionally and therefore you don't have that opportunity to get your code reviewed that often. Don't worry code reviews are not about perfection. I do the code review under the aspect of a game jam. Maybe we can find some tricks that can make you code faster during a game jam. ;)

If you are interested, let me know below under the comments.

Running my game on Game Boy!

I made a game for Game Boy! You can also play it on an browser emulator on game page.

I've done bunch of games for retro consoles in the past. I highly recommend giving it a try. Having your own little game running on a console from your childhood is a magical feeling!

Unity_RsLd1qrIEh.png this feels like the most productive game jam I've ever done

Far Away from what I expected at the start.

I started with an idea completely different and it changed, i was kinda lost, and just with 24 hors remaining i made at least something collI think. It's my firs game, its simple, but cool :)Tela-Inicial.png!

A bit late to get things uploaded, so time to sleep and do that in the morning. Quite happy with how this has turned out.

Oh yeah. Prettied up the coder art on the boost, bounce, and float pads. Sounds. TONS OF LEVELS GOT MADE. Keys. Throwing of keys. Doors. Doors we can make bridges out of. Doors we can ride to the moon.

And the fish greet each other when bumping into one another now. It gets wildly annoying and we all love it so far. I think. https://twitter.com/TyrusPeace/status/1312863987579736070?s=20

Lovely Update

Just created a GIF for the game :v:

BTW: currently trying to build the game also as Web - but somehow the build is not working

Coming in late...

I was busy on other stuff for the weekend but still want to participate the jam, so I start now. I'll try to make today something very small very quickly as I don't even have a team this time. We'll see if I get anything completed, but at least the theme gave me an idea for a game :)

Our game is finished!

Just finished tying up all the loose ends, realtily enjoyed the jam this time, the theme was really good and left space for interpretation, have a go at it! :sunglasses: :call_me: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/lifeloop

I published my first Ludum Dare Game!

I didn't have much time at last weekend.

So I expected I couldn't finish again.

But when I read the theme "Stuck in a loop", one simply game came across my mind.

And I did it. :)

Starting enthusiastically into the last day of the JAM!

Judging by the blog posts it looks like our game idea was not the most original one (hamster in a wheel). Nevertheless @cedric86 and me made good progress during the last two days and the game is starting to look like something:

2020-10-05 10em57/em42-Window.png

Today's agenda: - Create a menu and intro - Complete the started level (probably we will only manage to get 2 levels done after all) - Sound - Putting it all together - Publish!!!!

  • find a broom and clean the floor (nobody likes a dirty floor!)
  • call the guards on dangerous persons (there is ONE phone in the corner)
  • find all four(?) possible endings and have fun playing!

  • walk with arrows

So what are you waiting for? Go out and share the best Newts to become one of the greats!

Hi! This is my first Ludum Dare and 3rd game jam. What a rush!!! I'm really happy with the result all considering since I've never done art for a project before. This is a short demo for a social media simulator game. The sim aspect of it is limited in the current version (48h innit), and it's more of a text-based experience for now. I had to rush the SFX which I'm not fully happy with, but it was a lot of fun writing the 165 posts to populate the fake timeline!

Already have a lot of ideas on how this could be pushed further into a proper influencer-sim: managing different audiences, actual functionality for the Like and Dislike buttons, user profile, analytics dashboard... If I continue working on this, I'd say it'd work better as a mobile game like Reigns. We'll see!

Thanks for reading, hope you enjoy my absurd attempt at humour! Let me know what you think, all feedback appreciated.

Well, it was a great weekend, and I've really enjoyed working on Rail War. While I did make the submission in time for the Compo, there were unfortunately a few game braking bugs. Now I'm thinking if I should either just fix the bugs for the compo, or change submission to the Jam and make some of the graphics prettier ..

Half a day done!

I managed to do it! Despite me barely having any time at all, I managed to squeeze a game into the jam with only around half a day of programming and development. I'm proud with what I did, and happy with the engine! It's a quick game, so who knows, I might flesh it out even more in the future GameMaker_ Studio 5em10/em2020 8em18/em25 PM.png https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/orbit-1

Kruznice

I made it! After almost two years break I'm back. This is a very small game because my time was super limited, but it's playable and it's fun (I guess) :)

13 Codes - Finished and ready to play

Finished and submitted my entry. Title.png A puzzle like maze where you find codes to adjust the map. Also an unintentional loop careless explorers can fall into (now a feature). Download the zip file here: https://jammygunns.itch.io/13-codes

Keep up the hard work everyone. Looking forward to trying out the games entered.

Coming up on the last stretch...

We're at 11 hours 18 minutes left before the Jam deadline and we've finally managed to start scrapping things together, but only time will tell if it's too little;too late. This LD has definitely been a rough one, as tends to be the case whenever we try to do something more ambitious.

I'm going to try and catch a few hours of sleep before chugging through for the final stretch to hopefully take things home...
