LD21 August 19–22, 2011

Blank.

No idea what to make this game on. Theme is escape, which is so broad it could be anything. Escape from who, who are you, where are you, etc.

Escape from a lab on an alien planet? Just an idea… you would be a monkey/human and have to solve puzzles to find your way out and then make it back to earth?

I’m in!

I love this theme, and I’ve got some free time this weekend so it looks like I’m in! I’ll be using Game Maker, as per usual. Good luck everybody!

My 2nd LD!

This is my 2nd LD and I really had a great time during the 1st.

My game will be developed using Unity3D, Photoshop, sfxr, Audacity.

This time I will try to make the game simple and playable. My friend will arrive at the studio and join LD together with me this afternoon(sure we will work separately). The seat on the right side is left for him:

Is this my first ludum dare game? It’s really a period of time worth remembering~

IDEAS!

Been working for just over an hour. Writing this blog post in order to vent a little.

Basically, my idea is unifying three of my concepts. I’m putting it down here since, as much as I trust all of you, don’t want anyone stealing it.

INTERNETS IS PROOF.

Anyway, my idea compiles three of my brainstorming ideas. A: Use the escape button. B: Escape from a Spaceship. And C: Escape Velocity. I was actually thinking about creating some sort of spaceship launching game, similar to hedgehog launch or the like, but I decided against it. Going for something original.

So, basically, you’re going to be stuck in a spaceship, which has been damaged, potentially in a space battle or something. Your enemies have left you for dead, and you’re the only one alive in the crew (or you and your friends are, if I implement multiplayer eventually). So, the goal is to repair your ship’s engines so you can fire them up and achieve ESCAPE VELOCITY, (see what I did thar), so you don’t burn up/get crushed to death in the gas giants atmosphere.

Gameplay will consist of problem solving and resource collection in order to repair the engines (and additional subsystems that can slow your descent/increase your maximum tolerance). Once the engines are repaired, the game will end. Eventually an extension might be made where you attempt to reach escape velocity as fast as possible with the most systems repaired as you can, or maybe your initial attackers come back so the last part becomes a mini-game where you attempt to pilot your damaged ship and keep it from being killed. Maybe you have to risk falling a little longer to get defensive systems on line or something.

Anyway should get back to work, updates later.

Well then.

It’s something. Nothing moves at the moment, guess I’ll start working on that now.

Halfway done moving, gonna start jam brainstorming

I’ve been moving all day, and will probably be continuing for the next few hours. Hopefully it will give me time to formulate a project idea. I really like the theme this time, and I’m looking forward to the 100+ Escape the Room games that come from this :)

So far… so good, and now some sleep

My first LD, and here’s what I’ve got done so far…

  • Brainstorming theme into core game mechanics (just four simple ones really).  Done.
  • Mechanics into ruleset.  Done.
  • Story of game to support ruleset and mechanics.  Done.
  • New Unity project created.  Done.
  • Base classes created (just stubs).  Done.
  • Core game objects and “game field of play” created.  Done.
  • Fleshed out the first stub into a working class to interpret player input into gameplay actions (playerInputManager).  Done.
I’m really having fun with this, even though it’s only been 1.5 hours :) Next is 30 minutes of “what could possibly go wrong” brainstorming to try to come up with a list of possible problems I may run into from all of the above, then (I’m at -6 GMT), it’ll be 7 hours of sleep :) Tulrath Dev Snapshot 1

Zeroing in on theme

Escape is an interesting one.  I’m still trying to figure out exactly how to represent it in a game.  I’ve got several ideas:

  1. Escape from a place – You are someplace you don’t want to be, but getting out is hard
  2. Escape from a prison – variation on 1, but this time something is actively trying to stop you from leave
  3. Escape from a situation – You are someplace you don’t want to be, but this time the place is more of a social construct.  Social status or job perhaps, self image (too fat/weak)
  4. Escape from an emotion – Some emotion is holding you back, depression, pain, paranoia

These are the ones most resonating with me right now.

Not exactly the one I was going for…

…(I wanted dreams to win) But, still, I’m brainstorming now. I’ll keep on with the idea flow, then I’ll go to sleep and I’ll let my brain do his thing and let the magic happen.

I’m a bit frustrated and pissed and stuff because shit happens in life, but that’s actually good, it will show in the game I’m gonna make lol. I’ll channel it into something good…!

Wooooosh

Welp, espionage came in last. Anyway, getting started on an idea I just came up with now. Should be good enough, hoping to get some mileage out of art style. Boy is this post going to be embarrassing if I end up running out of time and skimping on art.

When you play your game more than you code it…

…you know it’s probably a fun idea. 😛

My idea: A game where you are constantly running away from someone shooting at you, and you need to dodge the bullets and junk on the ground. There wil hopefully be some rhythm based stuff in it, too.

The graphics were done in like 5 minutes in MS Paint, but anyway, a screenshot:

I don’t actually know how to attach the image to the post, so I’m hoping this works…

Good Morning!!!

It’s 5:40 ATM over here. and I have just seen the theme. “Escaple”, That could be funny :D. So livestream started at http://stream.corne.info/ and my screen capture software for timelapse started too. Now I just need to start typing on the left on the screen , where my FlashDevelop is. May the best win 😀

Escape from Joplin WIP 1

I’m happy to see the theme “escape” because I have just the idea for it. Here’s some reference imagery (via BuzzFeed, copyright AP):

I’m intending on making a game about the Joplin, Missouri, tornado disaster. As I said before, I’ve been working on some tech (procedural character animation) so I wanted my LD game to feature a dog. Therefore, the premise of this game will be that you are a dog trying to find your owner who is buried beneath the rubble. The goal is to find your owner so you can help him/her escape. I just started looking for images, and amazingly I was able to find the above photo of the relief and joy of some dog owners finding their dog. This game is sort of the inverse of that.

Part of the challenge of finding the owner is that you have to navigate very rough and dangerous terrain. And there’s sort of another “hook” to the game that I want to keep secret for now. I do want to state that, as much as I will try, I will not be able to develop an experience that does the subject matter the respect it deserves. But I don’t think that should stop anything from trying, because that is a way to remember this event and those it continues to affect.

I saw some of the devastation brought on by this spring with my own eyes while visiting Georgia, and it was a completely different experience than looking at these images. I hope to deliver a small fraction of the sense of being in that place. Because a sense of being is one of the things that videogames are all about.

Brainstorming

Not sure what to make yet. Just messing around in Unity. I recently got edge, and I really like the style of that game, so thats the starting point so far. Maybe the red is a wall of doom that the player must escape from?

Dueling Dungeons

I’ve come up with a title and an idea for what I’m going to do. Its going to be kind of like multiplayer tetris meets a platformer like Jumpman where you and another unfortunate soul are stuck in identical dungeons and each player is attempting to kill the other by collecting powerups which do stuff to the opponents dungeon. The winner escapes with their life.

What to do, what to do…

Well I woke up around 10.30AM, and here in Australia the competition starts at 12. So I browsed my various websites that I frequent, waiting for the theme to be released. I put off doing the boring stuff that one has to do on a Saturday because those are the best times to think! Midday comes along, and I excitedly look at the theme! Escape… One of the few themes that I absolutely didn’t want. at least 60% of the themes that were on there were excellent for me, and I could come up with ideas instantly.

I head off to have a shower, and then go for a walk and get groceries, which will give me a chance to work out what I want to do. None of the ideas I come up with really click though. I thought of building bridges across a chasm to allow villagers to escape (from whatever), escaping from reality, or escaping from fantasy (wizard in the real world). I was quickly running out of ideas, so I started bastardising the word escape.

First off it was e-scape. Some sort of online landscaping, maybe terrain manipulation? An idea, but one I couldn’t flesh out. ES Cape came to mind, well that means I can do stuff with capes, and capes are cool! I thought of a villain whose name is something like Edward Sedwick Cape who has to get past police with a combination of cape attacks and a special cape defense (which would make him invisible?). In anycase, I liked the play on words, and have decided to stick with it.

Lets see how it goes!

Got Me A Story!

My game is currently untitled, and it fits the theme in a relatively backwards way:

The idea is that in this game, you cannot escape. You just have to survive for as long as you can.

You will be a fighter pilot (center screen). You can spin with the mouse pointer, and fire with the space bar. Waves of enemies will come and you just have to survive.

Here’s an image of the first intro screen draft:

Just for some fun.

So a few hours into this Ludum Dare I notice it’s on, well timed to a free weekend of mine. I have nothing better to do so I may as well give it a shot.

My weapon of choice will be Lua and Love2D. A very nice little cross-platform dev library that wraps all sorts of useful libraries. But I have to readapt to using Lua during the process. I’ll post as I get anything done/ideas.

Currently, the first thing I’m thinking is something monochromatic. Can work well under the theme “Escape” it also greatly reduces any effort needed to be put into art. I only have loose ideas for gameplay and/or narrative. But first I’ll mess around with love2d and get up to speed with lua again. Make the start of a codebase.
