Ludum Dare 37 December 9–12, 2016

Day 1 update

Not a whole lot of progress today, though I have been familiarising myself with Phaser and also playing around with TexturePacker, and have a pretty solid idea of where I want to take this tomorrow, and should have the bulk of the game completed.

Late to the party

I decided to join now a day late, and i only have a day to work, but the theme fits well into a short project. I will use UE4 and make a game about recycling.

Brothers Rock Game Progress

Need violin mocap data

Here’s the progress so far.

I have a request….has anyone got someone playing a violin as mocap data anywhere? My daughter wants to be in the game now and I only had animations for keyboards, drums, guitar and singing.

Meaningful choices

Continuing our Inception-like game: meaningful choices. How’s everyone else progressing?

I’m done!

No excuses, but… I always have commitments that I can’t get out of on Ludum Dare weekends. Ah well. I managed to get something done though, not like last time where I failed miserably at the first hurdle. Couldn’t think of anything for the theme. Getting ready to post the exe and code up to the side and submit to ldjam.com. The game is called “Ludum Cascade” and you have to save the world from weird aliens trying to enter a portal on your moon base. There’s a choice of three weapons, but which one kills which enemy?

Steam Junk Racers Nine Thousand

I present to you the best game in the steamjunk racing genre. It’s not so much of a race as it is an attempt to not fall apart mid air. Keep your spring loaded propeller loaded with potential and your up-gasser filled up with burnable junk (read: stolen laundry) in order to stay in the air. Make sure to flip your Tog-Woggle(TM) and drop your Loot Anchor (C) so you can grab all of that sweet sweet loot (read: stolen laundry)

PROTIP: cardio bruh!

1st day’s results

LDJam screencap1

Been putting off the programming as long as I could, but 12 hours in and all the easy stuff is done. Guess it’s time to bite the bullet.

After the first day

Wanted to do a longer recap after the first day, but… i’m too tired…

Progress could have been better, but doesn’t seem bad so far. A first prototype is done. There’s even a cute little ball that follows me around, although it isn’t able to attack yet. And there’s a startscreen!

Currently my partner is working on the level, fleshing out the design of our arena.

Here’s a screen of our prototype. The build in graphics and textures of UE4 look too damn good o.o
It’s all still placeholder graphics, was practically just a test of how it could look and what can be done.

level

Maybe I’ll get the recap done tomorrow morning, got some sketches to show and maybe I’ll get a small video done :)

Schedule for tomorrow:
– Combat
– Finishing our own models (yeah, got something done there too)
– Looking into texture making

“One room, one fighter… and every demon from the desert!” – Caellon while brainstorming over our idea

A quick break, and a look back

Taking a short break, here’s our brainstorming notes on our game. Surprisingly, we didn’t come up with many original ideas on our list: it was mostly just titles to other games we happen to know took place in one room.

Sneak Peek

This is the Test Room of our game. You will be tested by your boss, so he can find out what you know and how you will react to different challenges. You are doing this only because you want to get out of the room.

More screenshots soon.

Nearly Sleeping time here in Kansas. We got a lot done today. Here’s a look at the final boss from our game. This is place holder art though.

LD Jam #37: One Room, An RPG Text Adventure

Hi All-

This is my first time participating in Ludum Dare (and one of the first games I’ve made ever, for that matter), so here goes:

I created a game using RPG Maker VX Ace as a library. The game is very short (takes about five minutes to complete), and features some simple puzzles and  incredibly witty dialogue*.

My goal was to create a short and engaging, narrative within the confines of a single room. I spent some time trying to decide how to create a game that used the “One Room” theme, and I decided to simply keep the entire game in a single room. That said, there are various items you can interact with, and ultimately your goal is to escape the room. My primary goals were to complete the challenge within the allotted time, and create a game that, while short, is entertaining. Enjoy, and let me know what you think.

*May not actually be very witty

I’ve uploaded the game to Google Drive, and there are two ways to get it:

  1. Easiest way: Download my game (Includes Source) using this google drive link:
    1. https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B2srgu-eQ9VzWUJvNEhHeXVUTjg
    2. Double click the EXE, and choose where to unpack
    3. There should be an application called Game.exe inside the unpacked folder. Open it up, and you should be good.
  2. Smaller Package: If you already have RPGMaker VX Ace, or want to Download it separately, you can get my game by itself (3 MB) here:
    1. https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B2srgu-eQ9VzWnQ3Xzl2dkIzSDA
    2. If you don’t already have the required libraries (RPGMaker VX ACE RTP), you can download them here:
    3. http://www.rpgmakerweb.com/download/additional/run-time-packages

The game is 188 Mb, but my unique content is only about 3Mb. The other 185 Mb is for the RPG Maker VX ACE Libraries.

25 Hour Progress Report // Pixel Dot studios

we’ve been hard at it. Our idea was the one room was based off of a Japanese puzzle box, so we’re hoping for everything moving and a few puzzles to be involved. At the end of each level, your character (Aisu) will run out of the exit door, and then run back around to the start door with his silhouette being visible. While Aisu runs around, we’re (hopefully) having the entire room quickly transition with blocks moving around the screen, as a puzzle box would be unlocked, with the final pieces turning into the next level. No levels have been implemented yet, we’re still getting core mechanics down :S Hopefully tomorrow we’ll have a lot more done

Screen Recording (12-10-2016 9-07-50 PM)

Here’s what I’ve got so far.

I feel like I’ve wasted a bunch of time trying to rework one of my previously existing programs, when I could’ve just used it from the start and changed what I needed. Well here’s the results so far. The art will most likely change but getting animations to work in pygame has been baffling to me for months now, so I’ll see what I can do.

Things going incredible fine

Untitled

All the base of the game is done, now i will begin the audio and polish.

I Think i am going to use the remaining time to create some kind of narrator Bastion style….

And for who is thinking why there is more than one room in the picture my anserws is at the and it will be only one..

I’m considering forfeiting…

This has been an unusual LD for me. I want to try to figure out what I’m going to do and share with y’all why I’ve barely made anything. I apologize if it comes out as a rant.

I’m usually really keen to take part of the compo and give it my best. At the same time, I don’t really care with the results. I’m really in for the complete experience: *slaughtering themes, voting, making a game and playing/commenting on all your awesome games. (*yeah, I’ve always skipped the suggestion phase…)

I also enjoy the aspect of putting down my current project/whatever for sometime and try doing something new and/or different. It’s always great to see how much I’m able to accomplish in a single weekend.

And there’s a part of me that doesn’t want to break my streak… I’ve been able to successfully enter a new game every compo, even when I trashed my previous idea late during the first day and would be away for most of the second.

This time, however, I haven’t been able to fully focus from the beginning.

It started with the theme. I was pretty disappointed with it and couldn’t come up with any usable idea before going to sleep (the theme was announced at midnight, here). The following morning, I woke up even before the alarm rang, only so less time was “wasted” sleeping…

The idea I was able to come up with was quite… weak. The theme felt unnecessary and the game could work just fine without it. (The game was also a bad ripoff of another game’s mechanic.) But I don’t want to ignore it. I feel that ignoring the theme is ignoring a big part of the event. Also, if I were to ignore the theme and make anything, why not simply work on my current project? That would be more productive, but it would also mean skipping the event… This thought kept looming around, and was a big factor on my procrastinating through most of the day.

I still think I have more than enough time to wrap up my current entry. It wouldn’t be as polished as it could had been, but it would be something. But then, I get caught up on these thoughts…

  • I don’t want to force myself to finish the game for the sake of finishing it
  • But I don’t want to skip an event
  • At the same time, I want to prove to myself that I am able to overcome all that and finish something
  • and so on…

Well… I don’t know. I’m off to sleep. I’ll leave the decision (to continue or to give up) to my future, rested self. (who’ll probably be in a better mood…)

Finally at “Hello World” :(

Well, the risk with starting from scratch is spending a ton of time getting to where you can do anything at all.

And I totally just did that. :(

But now I have a hello world here. It is literally a Hello World written in Typescript. But it there’s also a unit test system, as well as local and remote deployment.

Lesson of the past 3 or so hours? Don’t try and use the exact same build setup for your test runner as your deployment. They’re not the same! Don’t bother! The fruits of my struggle are here.
