Ludum Dare 37 December 9–12, 2016

Throwing in the towel

It’s 23 minutes until deadline and this is me throwing in the towel for LD37.

Concept: Maze puzzle game where you make your own maze following a story. The game starts out with a small empty room that is expanded and built by tearing down walls, and pushing blocks into different spots.

Goal: Making a game. Also I’ve mainly used LD37 to exercise for my semester exams coming up this week with the subjects multi-threading and finite-state machines.

Tool: JetBrains Rider (buggy as hell) with .NET Core console application

State of the game: Unplayable/Too short (The base of the game is implemented, I just didn’t get around to using it.)

I started out just typing code before having a concept. Never again! (Just maybe sometimes) I have deleted and rewritten so much code, and the last hours was full of small and fundamentally bad bugs because of this.

The weekend was absolutely “NOT WASTED”. The game has half a billion unique threads that goes all over the place. All of them with a lesson.

The game has a shaky mode for earthquakes that I used way too many hours implementing, just fiddling with how the tiles were placed. It could easily have been done just by using 15 minutes thinking instead of coding. It was in the graphics I lost.

TLDR:
Most important lesson learned: Make time for pen, paper and planing.
Success: Yes!
8/10 would LD again.

The moment participate is the moment you win and congrats for trying (almost) to the last minute!

…and that’s my 2nd LD done!

Whew… these things are exhausing (plus it’s 3am)

Very happy to have finished my 2nd LD ever. I’d love it if anybody wanted to check out my game:

Room 101

Room 101

Constructive criticism is always welcome :)

I’m a little disappointed with how this one turned out in the end. I wasn’t really about to get a good grip with the theme. Oh well. Still, great fun and there’s always next time :]

Finding game question

I don’t see my game in Compo Entries list, but I’ve submitted it and can find using site “search”. Is it ok?

Yes.

Blob Catcher submitted

Yes, I finally submitted my compo entry, Blob Catcher

You are in  a (single) room full of blobs, and they have an overwhelming desire to escape. Use your grappling hook cannon to catch as many blobs as possible, and don’t let them escape through the top of the room!

Aim with your mouse and click to shoot.

Blob Catcher

You’ll have to tie two blobs together to stop them. The first time you shoot, you’ll stick one end of the grappling hook to a blob. Your second shot will grapple another blob. Once two blobs are tied, they’ll be attracted towards each other until they get smashed out!

The farther away the two blobs are, the more points you’ll score!

And, each time you manage to smash additional blobs when the two are attracted towards each other, it’ll double the points you just scored!

Play the Game

From a technical standpoint, this time I was away from home and didn’t have access to my gamedev computer. So, I borrowed a laptop and I attempted to make a game using only online-based tools (without installation required). So, I actually created this game with Scratch 2.0, a tool designed to teach kids how to program. I wanted to see if you could make Jam games with it too – I hope you’ll enjoy the result.

PC crashes won’t stop me – This Room Ain’t Big Enough For The Two Of Us

aintRoomEnoughSS1

Holy shit I made it! My laptop died at 9:15, but a quick drive home and I got it built and uploaded in the final minutes.

The game is “This Room Ain’t Big Enough For The Two Of Us”, and it’s a local multiplayer game where you’re cowboys building rooms in a quest to not be in the same room. Whoever ends up with the bigger room wins!

This was definitely my most complete LD entry to date (even managed audio this time!). Yeah, the physics and some of the collision detection might be all sorts of buggy, but I think I’ll be fine for the moment.

My Game – Bat Cave

Another successful Ludum Dare… my 3rd. I hope you check out my game named “Bat Cave” and will consider rating once voting starts… I will do the same for you.

Next up: A Post Mortem blog entry and a Timelapse video!

Great at times, frustrating at times, but I had a blast!

Done.

My submission.

cauldron doesn't actually look like that in the exported game for some reason.

I wanted to try figuring out how to do some social media buttons and stuff but got too distracted making the actual game.

I think it turned out ok. Didn’t have time to really test it.

Never Do Yesterday What Should Be Done Tomorrow

48 hours in and about three hours of work complete, that bit that stopped us from actually beginning (LIF!) is well past all of us: food, money, shelter, WOMEN, what are these things to the hardy young developer? Ignoring these tropes of existence, we as the now christened “Too. Busy… Pushing Vertices!” are on our auspices 13t… Err… 14th build! Progress is being made on the environmental / UI design by Mistah Mike Crabbs (who has a brother named Dr. Crabbs… And no, the joke never gets old) and modeling by Mr. Dylan Rintoul (who apparently was smart enough to avoid medieval re-enactment all the way through college.)

Lets see what The Mike has been up to:

Mike SS1

Being put on the spot, he is learning how to define boundaries for VR. He has already accomplished exploration of this very portal like environment, thus my hat is off to our lovely coder.

Dyllaaannnnnn is trying to step away from his The SIMs addiction long enough to create models that are unique for the game:

WIP Props

Stand up lad, him, as he even gave the screenshot a nice title as opposed to making me scour my desktop for a random string of numbers (though Mike is still loved.) Texturing should happen soon and I’ll have something to show.

I’m currently working on creating a thousand little death messages and as I had a special assignment from Murkal Crubbs himself plus a minor life event, am just now stepping back into the game. Regardless, all is going well and even being crammed into a room (virtual or otherwise) each of us is enjoying the company of the other – well worth the time!

More soon my friends!

I missed the Compo but I’ll reach the Jam!

Sadly I couldn’t make to the compo. I really wanted to, I guess I am out of practice. Anyway I don want to make it to the jam!

Here is a small progress 😀

And here is part of the first battle

For fun I also made it work on 3DS :D. This wont be a entry but it was fun to see it could run on the console.

Cheers!

Done and went well

I just submitted my game Softlock (http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-37/?action=preview&uid=55143) for the compo and I’m pretty proud of it. I think that this has been probably my best Ludum Dare yet and while the game has some issues it is much better than my past games. This was also the first time I’d ever done 3d in Unity before so I think it went well considering that, all in all a good time.

Defend One Room – Check it out

My game is for the compo. The theme this time around didn’t inspire too much creativity for me. But I feel really good about my game regardless.

It’s a pretty simple tower defense with a mechanic that is a little different than most. Each wave is a number of towers that is “ideal” for the wave (a par like in golf). If you build less towers than the par you get a health bonus on your building. If you build more towers than the par your building takes extra damage.

There is 1 bug that I couldn’t extinguish before submission. Sometimes after a wave is finished, the game thinks there is still 1 or 2 enemies in the level, when there is not. So the game gets stuck. I put in a cheat though to get passed it. So if you get stuck, just press the “x” key once or twice.

Check it out!

Manifest My Is

I didn’t have time to rig up a non-VR or even standard gamepad compatible version due to the motion controller mechanics being the focus of the game. You need your hands available to drag yourself and crawl around. Hopefully a few of you can play!

The goal of this project was to try dragging yourself and crawling naturally using VR motion controllers. This works pretty well in zero-g games like Lone Echo, but I wanted to see how it would feel with gravity and surface friction. I think it works pretty well! You can push yourself up from the ground, drag yourself around, and crawl naturally. There are a few things I wish I had figured out, most notably in game rotation of the character based on the grip and position of your hands. I noodled with some solutions for a while but was left with a spinning mess and had to cut it. You currently have to physically turn yourself in real life, which isn’t so bad in this case as there isn’t too much to turn around for. The cable and port that is attached to your hand was meant to drag behind you, but it had such little visibility that I had to stick it somewhere easier to see. Needless to say, I got to audio a little late, but I’m actually happy with what I managed in that department.

All’s Well That Ends Well! (Except for this scientist guy)

Well that’s the end of another compo! I’m pretty happy with what I got done, my first one-point perspective drawing and more good animations than I’ve done before!

I hope everything’s gone well for you all too, and that you get some well deserved rest now after all that! (Unlike me!)

Thanks for another eventful Ludum Dare, good luck with the judging! :)

Got it done

Well, I got something in.  And the player spends the entire game in a room, interacting only with its walls. And it has tanks.

My first shot with Unity for an LD, and it went pretty well. The entry is up here: Domain

My wife had major surgery on Thursday, so a lot of the week was worrying about that (she’s doing well). So, my 48 hours was more like 13 total time to work on it as she recovered and we got her home from the hospital. So, not as deep or polished as some of my other entries, but better looking than some and better music than any, I think.

Some production screenshots, if anyone’s interested. Game screenshots at the link above.

Still trying (somewhat)

I am still in the Jam but have done very little these past 2 days due to lack of motivation. My game takes place in one room and is going to involve shipping monsters, below is a control panel I have been working on. Hopefully I can get something functional done in time.

Leaving here my Shooter / Tower Defense hybrid!

Hey guys, that was really a very good run on this Ludum Dare Game Jam!

Really happy that my entry here finished on time, altought not with all the features i wanted for start (wanted to implement a boss minion too, but didn’t got time enough to implement that!)

Anyway, here is my game, Tower Defense with 2D Shooter that all happens in a nuclear room with killing robots! Hope you enjoy! =D
