LD30

Hey everyone!

posting for a team of 4 here, 2 programmers, an artist and a musician. One veteran and three first-timers! We’ll be streaming at twitch.tv/bassguitarbill.

Some notes on our setup:

We’ll be writing in html5 Canvas with Javascript (or so I am told)

I’ll be writing the music on LSDJ for the gameboy and guitar and maybe some old casio keyboards, and recording and mixing in Reaper.

To be honest I don’t know what our artist is using, so I’ll have to update once she arrives and fills me in.

That’s about it for now! Good Luck Everybody!

Space HVAC

So, check it:

You’re the Space-HVAC guy, eager to fly through space and heat other planets up, by dragging them closer to the sun. Because it’s cold out there.

So you’re orbiting a sun, and you fire a harpoon, and it hits a planet, and the inhabitants of that planet cheer, and you bust out your winch and pull that planet closer.

There’s more, but we’re still hammering out details.

Oh goodness another Ludum Dare

Hi, I’m Bill. This will be my second Dare, my first compo, so I’m somewhat nervous now that I don’t have another programmer to watch my butt.

My jam entry for LD30 was Tether, made in collaboration with my buddies Chris, Miki, and Ryan. It was so much fun to make, and I think the game came out very, very well.

Engine: nothing fancy, just HTML5, CSS, and Javascript. Yay cross-platform compatibility!

Art (heh): Gimp, like, if I absolutely have to have art in my game.

Don’t expect much. I am a fair-to-middlin’ JS programmer, and if it ends up taking me too long, I might turn this into a jam. Which, okay whatever, it is what it is.

Good luck, all!

No snowmen

no snowmen

I’m honestly a little disappointed.

I have a concept

I don’t have any visuals, other than poor, poor whiteboard art, which I won’t show.

But hey, at least it wasn’t ⛄, right? Thank goodness.

Oh here’s my GitHub if you’re interested.

OOH a playable build

Not much of a playable build, but it exists nonetheless. Here it is.

There is a bug where if you scare an empty room, all mice die. This is obviously tragic, but I’m hungry so I will fix it later.

RIP

As a professional programmer who cares deeply about writing quality code, it was fun to just go nuts with this entry, programming like I didn’t give a damn.

Turns out, there’s a reason people write quality, object-oriented, extendable code. Because it will make your life less terrible down the line.

I have a working game, and the Entire Game [fits] on One Screen, but there’s a lot wrong with it. There’s no way to reset a puzzle if you screw it up, and if you go back and unsolve one of your earlier puzzles, then solving the current puzzle won’t work.

Also, the game is about shuffling mice between rooms. The mice are represented as a number, not as actual mice scurrying around, because event-based programming confuses me to no end.

My art is lacking but functional.

My music is pretty good, but it’s only a minute so I assume it will get annoying quickly.

BUT

I had a lot of fun, and I learned what not to do when making a game quickly. I’m going to take this newfound knowledge and use it to participate in the next game jam that comes along.

Good luck to everyone else!

It’s always a balance, but I’ve had the same problem with one of my earlier Ludum Dares, so I completely understand your pain.

Compoooooooooooo

Hi. I’m in. This will be my fourth Dare, second Compo. My Jam during #30 produced Tether, my Jam during #32 produced Zolf, and my Compo during #31 produced [scene missing].

That’s right. I forfeited last December. The middle of day 2, I realized my framework was not robust enough to allow me do to what I needed to do without tearing a bunch of it out and starting fresh.

So this compo shall be my revenge. No excuses, no sloppy code, no mercy.

Code will be Javascript / HTML5 / CSS. JS should all stay in the browser, unless I have some supercompelling reason to add a Node.js server.

Music will be done with probably Bosca Ceoil. SFX with SFXR .

Art (yeesh, I’m not a visual artist AT ALL) will be done in make8bitart, or Gimp if that proves too challenging.

And now, here I sit, equipped with a computer, a cup of tea, and Thai food that is almost certainly too spicy to eat. And I wait. I eagerly await this opportunity to better myself, and craft a product that says “Made by Bill AND NOBODY ELSE”.

Good luck to my fellow competitors, good luck to the jammers, thanks to the LD staff for making this event possible, and thanks especially to you, the reader.

Let's Jam

My favorite kind of Ludum Dare is one where all collaborators hang out in a house for a couple days, because working with people in person is extremely nice. No chance of that this time around, though!

I'm going to try the compo this time, I've had a few aborted attempts to make a game by myself before, but maybe this time will be different.

I've previously worked in JavaScript/TypeScript and HTML5, as it is my strongest language, but over the past few months I've watched a lot of YouTube videos of game development with engines, and I think Godot will be right up my alley. I'm a Godot novice at the moment, but I tend to learn best when I've got a goal and a time limit.

Godot / Aseprite / SFXR / Bosca Ceoil probably.

-What Guns- is ready for another jam!

Our last game, completed for LD45, was a great success, and even though we're remote this time, we're hoping to make something even better!

Programming will be done by myself, @pzafonte, and @chris-mondok. We're going to use, as always, TypeScript and HTML5 in the browser.

Our regular music guy didn't answer my text, so I'll be doing music and sound on this one. I'll be using SFXR and Bosca Ceoil.

@mikitharp will be doing the art, using either Procreate or Photoshop depending on what kind of art we decide to do.

Yeah!

Compo 48

This is very exciting! This will be my eighth LD, my fourth time trying the Compo (I say "trying" because of two years where I had to abort, because making games is hard!). Last time I did the compo, I spent most of my productive time figuring out how to properly use Godot, and while I'm happy with the result, that's mostly due to the art and the music, because the game itself is very simple and very janky. Therefore, this time I'll be using a workflow that I'm used to, which is to say HTML5 canvas, TypeScript, building my own engine, possibly using Tiled if it ends up being that kind of a game.

Halfway done

Toil and Trouble

If you're pressed for time and are only rating <20 games, feel free to ignore this post, but as we make our way to the end of the judging period, we'd like it if more people gave our game a try. We have a boatload of good feedback to work through for the 2.0 release, but the best way to make a game as good as possible is to hear many critiques and opinions about it, so we'd appreciate your feedback!
