*cheesy movie hacker voice* I'm in

I'm in.

For the 10th time too, time has really flown by. Will most probably end up making a Unity VR game once again, this time I'll hopefully have time to port it to 2D too. Also, for the first time in my LD experience, I woke up (at 4 AM!) for the start of the Ludum Dare, which is giving me 8-16 more hours than I've had in previous Ludum Dares. This'll be interesting indeed. Have fun dareing!

EDIT: Ah yeah, I'll be liveposting on my Mastodon, so if you're on Mastodon or GNU Social, give a follow ;) I might do bigger updates (one per day or such) on here too.

Compo.Contains(Me)

I'm participating, once again. Will be using GIMP for 2D art, Google Blocks for 3D art, Audacity and possibly Bfxr for sound effects, and I most probably won't have time for music (LMMS if I do). If I end up making a VR thing, I'll go with Unity, but otherwise Godot (if you don't know about Godot, check it out, it's really cool and FLOSS). Because I'm a free software nerd. Finally, I'll be liveposting my progress over at Mastodon, as always

Have fun dareing, fellow dareists! :fist:

I'll make a thing (like Donkey Kong)

I'll be making something, maybe VR, maybe something with weird technical limitations.

Will be using Godot 3.0, Unreal or something else.

Tools I'll be using

I'm currently planning on making a VR game with Unreal Engine, and I'll be using my own VR boilerplate included in my LiVRary project. The Git repo has stuff I won't be using too, but the Content/VRUUM directory contains the boilerplate, if you're interested.

One day is still one day

This Ludum Dare has been quite the emotional rollercoaster for me. The first day I woke up a bit late, so I begun with a little bit of (unnecessary) stress. I didn't come up with ideas very easily, until finally I settled on making a space adventuring game. The idea was to make a space exploration game, where you balance your fuel/oxygen/etc. resources, and more of anything means more weight, which is arguably a "worse" when in space. Well, as you might guess from the past tense, this idea was doomed from the start, and after 7 hours I abandoned it. At that point, Ludum Dare had been running for about 16 hours, so I just decided to stop for the day.

This morning (about 5-6 hours ago) I started the game I think I'll be submitting. It's about making a factory, where efficacy is the main goal: the more resources you use, the worse it is ;) Feeling pretty good about this idea, though having about 16 hours total to make a game is pretty spooky. I'm taking part in this event

I'm in!

Who knows what I'll do, but I hope I'll end up making something small and cool with Rust. Would be nice to not use a game engine once in a while.

My toolbox

Unlike I stated in my "I'm in" post, I won't actually be writing a game from scratch this time either. I'll be using: - Godot Engine (3.0 is finally out and documented!) as the engine - MagicaVoxel + GIMP for graphics - Microphone + Audacity for audio, whatever that'll be - Sonic Pi if I get inspired to make music? - The Fediverse for social mediaing :) (For more information: joinmastodon.org)

Controversial theme strikes again!

As much as I want to say that the theme is the worst once again, it is kind of a nice challenge. Though there is one thought sticking out in my mind: if you make a good game that fits the theme, wouldn't it mean that the genres are indeed compatible, making your game not fit the theme?

Finally starting to make something

Woke up 6 hours after start, idea took 3 hours to form, and just generally wrote down plans and set up the project for the rest of the time so far. Almost 12 hours in, and I've got a character with FPS controls in an empty room.

Time to get working so I can catch up? Nah, I'll make some lunch.

MVP done!

Well, I'm not sure if it's correct to call it a minimum viable product, but the base for the mechanics is done. Just imagine that the left hand has a deck in it, the right hand is throwing cards with cool art, and the enemies are demons or something.

Time to go for a walk.

Getting on the train as it's leaving

This Ludum Dare really came out of left field for me. Normally I have a week to prepare myself mentally and reserve time for Ludum Dare, but this time I somehow had missed the date completely. I don't have any other commitments for the weekend however, so I guess I'm in!

I personally think this is a pretty good theme, for the record.

LD 43

Not going exactly as planned

This time I was going to do something different; I stayed up until 7 AM yesterday, so I had three hours from the start to think up an idea, and bootstrap the game I'd make during the weekend! Sadly, I didn't really come up with anything, and ended up just sleeping in a whole lot. Woke up, thought of some ideas too big to handle, and started just making something. Now I have a first person template with ~picking items up~ implemented, but that's about it. The more problematic part is that we're halfway, and I have no high level concept for my game.

Maybe I'll make some kinda adventure game, after all, I've kinda implemented the framework for it. Here's a link to a post with some footage, because you can't upload videos to this website, and gifs of fps games are really big.

I'm in

I was tempted to title this Neon Is In, as in "baba is you," but that felt too self-aggrandizing so I put it here, outside the header.

It's my ~15th Ludum Dare, give or take a few ones I didn't finish in time. Going to go pretty blind into this one, I'll come up with an idea first and the tech second. The two major technologies on my list are Unity and Raylib, but I have a feeling I won't be up to writing everything myself, so I'll probably end up using Unity.

Ludum Dare 48

I'm in!

I've been a little lazy about finishing Ludum Dares lately, it's time to make up for it. This is the one and only LD48 after all ;)

Bumpy start

...As it often is. Got on the computer 12 hours into the jam, and then took the afternoon to really think up a good idea for the theme. Didn't end up with anything original, as all the interesting ones I did think up were very content-heavy (story-first, lots of assets), and I'd prefer something systems-heavy, as that's much easier to make good in 48 hours.

So: mining game. Hello to the 2000 other people who are making mining games! Let's make the best shoveling games we can. For my part, I started by opening my DAW and vibing with some sounds, trying to find a mood for the game. Didn't find anything particularly musical, but this one wind synthesizer inspired me to make a sort of abandoned ghost town in the wild west milieu. After that, I finally opened up Unity, only to have some problems building lighting, and then crash. I haven't done much Unity work on Linux before, so for all I know, this is what I can expect from the next 30 hours. Next up: sketching out a schedule to find out if this is viable to write from scratch, since I know that won't crash on me constantly.

Ludum Dare 50

I'm in~

Very busy with university and work though, and on top of that, I'd like to have a go using the renderer I've been writing for a while now. The Extra category is a welcome addition in my books!

Ludum Dare 53

I'm in!

Been a while since my last LD, and I've done only a few in the last few years. It's the 25th Ludum Dare since my first one though, so if for nothing else, I'm in for my own anniversary!

One thing I've been doing instead of joining Ludum Dares has been hacking on renderers. Last summer I wrote a game using a Vulkan renderer I made during the previous year, and that took a month. Now I'm intending on doing that again this weekend, with an OpenGL renderer I wrote during the last ~2 weeks! Surely the game's development time will scale similarly...

Tech and tools I'll be using: - No engine, just the renderer as base code: https://github.com/neonmoe/ld53-base-code - Rust (+ emscripten for the embedded web build! We live in exciting times.) - SDL 2 - OpenGL ES 3.0 (the WebGL 2 compatible subset) - Blender - Krita and/or Material Maker (depending on the art style I'll go for) - MilkyTracker

The audio part, as always, is a big question mark for me. I often neglect it in game jams, and don't really practice making music in general. But maybe this time! MilkyTracker has seemed very fun to play with, even if my composition skills won't live up to my own standards.

Other than that, I'm feeling pretty confident, no looming deadlines at university or work, and I think I've got the tech part down pretty good. Have a fun Ludum Dare 53 everyone!

Ludum Dare 57

Back at it again

Haven't found the time to participate recently, but this time I have incorporated Ludum Dare into the schedule by making it a part of a thing I do have to do: I'm writing my master's thesis about making a game engine (prototype), and whatever I make in this Dare will serve as a demonstration of using it. Incredible synergy, I know. Now, onto the tools:

  • The game engine I cooked up during the last few months. (Calling it a game engine is pretty generous. It doesn't have many features at all.)
  • Aseprite or Krita for art, depending on the style I end up going with.
  • Bitwig Studio for audio, and hardware-wise, maybe my Strega synthesizer. Lovely drone machine.

I'll definitely be making a 2D game this time, because the engine only has a simple 2D renderer. And there's a distinct possibility the game won't feature physics, as the engine doesn't have such a system. Very classic from-scratch compo vibes this time.

Time out

I was hoping to fit this one in the compo, but 48 hours wasn't enough this time. At least I managed to finish the simulation side of the game today, but with 2 hours to go, I'm going to leave the UI/controls for tomorrow. Hopefully some animations as well, and like an actual progression and end for the game. But hey, I did manage to get some sprites done, and the soundtrack! First time in a good while that I've actually managed to fit music into the schedule. Short clip of the current, thrilling gameplay (featuring some of the drone I cooked up):
